Headline of Daily Times newspapers on Thursday, October 9, 1969 captured the release of Nigeria's Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, after his imprisonment following the civil war, IGBERETV reports.

During the Nigeria/Biafra war, the then head of state, Yakubu Gowon put Soyinka in solitary confinement for two years after Soyinka secretly and unofficially met with the military governor of Eastern Region, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu in Enugu in August 1967, to try to avert the civil war.

However, in 2004, Gowon seized the occasion of the banquet organised by the Ogun State government at the auditorium of the Government House, Valley View, Abeokuta, to mark the end of activities for Soyinka’s 70th birthday celebrations to explain and defend his regime.

Gowon told the guests: “When I was Head of State, he (Soyinka) did not want anything in uniform and reports reaching me were that he was doing everything to effect a change of the system.”

“I was told by some people that I should make sure that he (Soyinka) did not circulate much.

On a humorous note, Gowon continued: “At that time, he was very, very young; he had no grey hairs, perhaps what happened to him (his imprisonment) might have caused this his numerous grey hair. Both of us were very young and idealistic at that time and I happened to be the man in charge of Nigeria at that time.”

Founder of the Living faith Church, Bishop Oyedepo has said that he has never campaigned for any political party or any political candidate, IGBERETV reports.

Captain of Nigeria's Super Eagles, Ahmed Musa has now earned the most Nigerian international caps after playing against Guinea-Bissau in Nigeria’s second leg of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match on Monday, March 27, IGBERETV reports.

The Nigerian national team defeated the Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau by 1-0 at the Estadio 24 de Setembro.

Ahmed Musa made his Eagles debut in 2010 and was a member of the 2013 Nations Cup-winning team. Following Monday's match he has now amassed 108 caps, breaking the previous record for Nigeria.

Following this achievement, he has matched the 108 national caps held by England’s Tim Cahill, Germany’s Jurgen Klinsmann, and France’s midfielder Zinedine Zidane while surpassing Patrick Vieira’s 107 international caps for France, and Frank Lampard’s 106 caps for the Three Lions of England.

Musa has scored 16 goals for the national team, since his debut . The Nigerian forward is also Nigeria’s highest scorer in the World Cup with four goals.

A 19-year-old rape victim on Monday, March 27, appeared before a sexual offences and domestic violence court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, to testify against, Pope Paul, a youth pastor in the Deeper Life Bible Church she accused of raping her, IGBERETV reports.

She told the court that the cleric began raping her when she was 15 and while living with him. She said she knew the cleric when she started living with his wife identified as sister Lydia.

She said Paul started the alleged sexual abuse by touching her breasts when nobody was around. The rape victim said;

“Immediately after Sister Lydia got married, I came to Lagos for a holiday in 2016.

“After the holiday was over, I was to go back home (Ibadan) but she told me I should start living with her and that she had spoken with my mother.

“I was enrolled in a private school as I resumed in SS1. I only go back to my parents during the holiday.

“On February 17, 2018, I noticed this lustful look on Pope Paul and he came to me; he started with a rough play and then bumped on me.

“He started touching me because there was nobody around.

“He moved on to touch my breasts and used his hand to cover my mouth while he inserted his fingers into my private part. As he fingered my private part, blood was flowing out.”

Speaking further, she alleged that the cleric played a “Christian message” and increased the volume so that no one could hear her voice during the alleged rape incident. He also allegedly warned her that she would die if she told anyone.

She recalled how Paul allegedly came to her room one night, dragged her to the kitchen and had sexual intercourse with her. The abuses she said she was subjected to came to light after her mother who had been observing her, forced her to take a pregnancy test which came back positive.

She said;

“My mum called pastor and he said that he was sorry and had asked God for forgiveness and knew that God had forgiven him.

“My mum told him to inform his wife about the pregnancy but he refused and later denied that he impregnated me which prompted my mother to report the case to the police and he was arrested.”

After hearing from her, Justice Ramon Oshodi adjourned the case to May 23 for continuation of trial.

Nigeria's President-elect, Bola Tinubu has cancelled the annual colloquium to mark his birthday, IGBERETV reports.

Tinubu opted for special prayers and a thanksgiving service instead. The president-elect who will be turning 71 on Wednesday, March 29, stated that he's seeking God’s guidance for him and the country as he prepares to take the reins of leadership.

A media aide to the President-elect, Tunde Rahman said prayers would be held in Lagos and other parts of the country. The special prayers would be offered at the central mosque in each of the five divisions in the state including, the central mosque, Alausa, Ikeja.

The statement read;

“Also to receive prayers among others are President Muhammadu Buhari and first lady Aisha Buhari, president-elect, Tinubu, and his wife, senator Oluremi Tinubu, Vice-President-elect, senator Kashim Shettima, and Hajia Nana Shettima, governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, other state governors as well as members of national and state houses of assembly.

Governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour says Nigerians can't heal from the violence and bigotry until victims of electoral violence in the country get justice, IGBERETV reports.

Gbadebo lost to Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Lagos state gubernatorial election that had widespread reports of electoral violence, voter suppression and ethnic bigotry.

On Tuesday, Nigeria's president-elect, Bola Tinubu, condemned the electoral violence and said his government would start the healing process by embracing the opponents.

But Rhodes-Vivour speaking during a press conference in Lagos on Wednesday, March 22, said the electoral violence must be treated before the healing process could start.

He called on residents of Lagos to be vocal against a “new type of democracy” that is being imposed on them.

“Yesterday, Bola Tinubu called for healing but healing cannot happen without justice. There was an attempt to make this seems like the violence was a Yoruba versus Igbo. But it was widespread across the state. Everybody was affected and disenfranchised,” the LP candidate said.

“And we also saw a lot of violence and intimidation but it was nothing compared to the militia attack unleashed on Lagos on Saturday.

“What we are complaining about is not numbers, it is the new type of democracy these people are trying to impose. The topic of conversation is that well-meaning Lagosians should stand up and show that they are disdained.”

Rhodes-Vivour also announced the launch of a website where victims of electoral violence can upload their evidence and get their medical bills handled by his team.

“Today, we launched a platform called GRVCares2023.com. Please, anyone that is a victim of electoral violence can log onto this website and upload the evidence of this violence, hospital bill, and police report if you have it,” he said.

“We will offset your bills. Because empathy and love are not just lip service but actions. And for people that came out, we are going to show that we stand by you.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has cast his vote at polling unit 003, Sarkin Yara A in Daura, Katsina State, with a call to electorate to vote for their preferred candidates even if politicians tried to offer them money.

The president, who briefly spoke to newsmen both in English and Hausa languages after casting his vote on Saturday, said his administration had been preaching against vote-buying and monetisation of politics, calling on politicians to desist from such acts.

“If they (politicians) still give you money, collect, but vote for your preferred candidates,” Buhari maintained. He again thanked the electorate for trusting the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the Feb. 25 Presidential and National Assembly elections where the party’s candidate, Sen. Bola Tinubu, emerged winner.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the president, who cast his vote at about 9.55a.m, refused to ‘openly’ display his ballot paper as he did during the Feb. 25 Presidential election.
