You dont know? Cant you guess. . . things like having to be responsible for your younger siblings (if you have any), being a good role model, parents always use you for 'trials' (the younger ones get away with a lot of things you as the older one never got away with) and so on and so on. I am not even mentioning things like having to be responsible for the parents welfare when they get older, having to listen to all their complaints (sometimes about the younger siblings etc etc

. . . or the cost of its maintenance. Benz cars have always been for the 'select few' who will go to all lenghts and cost to maintain their cars and keep them running. Owning a benz that is ill maintained is a big SIN.

Dont know how this will sound to you but i always tell people, 'if you have the money to buy yourself a benz, you should not be worrying about the cost of fuel'.

The question should be how many Nigerians are in saudi jail
I can assure you that no matter how many are in those jails, Yar' Adua is not there to help them in any way. I am sure he will not even bring that subject up.

Seriously, i am just amazed.
How can most Heads of State be 'striking deals' and making contacts somewhere and our own man be missing in action? Is that not foolish? Cant his party or the senate advice him?
That was one area OBJ did not slack in. The guy just loved to attend such meetings, if given the chance.
PoliticsRe: Yaradua In Saudi Arabi To Commission Private University. by Epiphany(m): 5:28pm On Sep 24, 2009
Even the troublesome Gaddafi was there and Yar'Adua was nowhere to be seen. This shows where Yar'Adua's priorities are. Instead of fraternising with the wider worldly community, he would rather go to Saudi to witness the opening of a university. How lame.

Naija is in trouble o! This president does not have any plans for us whatsoever!
Car TalkRe: Please Can A Kia Picanto Transit Between Lagos And Port Harcourt by Epiphany(m): 1:36pm On Sep 24, 2009
aduje:
Hi Poster,

I have used cars and travelled the Lagos / PH route for 6 years going. The strength of the car is not match for the deadly potholes on our roads (consider Ore (Ondo State) to Benin Bye Pass; also, Aba PH express). The cost of kia picanto is about the same for a 1998 toyota camry (tokunbo). Dealers on Nairaland can be of help. Check out people like friendl, carshopper, inspired, ayodeji etc.

Do not buy that matchbox called kia picanto for that kind of journey. We have it at home(my wife's won it during glo promo) we use for my kids school run within an estate in Lagos.

It is my sincere opinion.

Good luck!
I like this answer.

Honestly, i dont think that stressing a 1.1L engine for that distance is fair. As a driver, i dont think you will enjoy the drive either. I would think that instead of spending 1.5M naira or thereabout on a new car (that will suffer the wear and tear of that distance due to the roads and stress on the engine) why dont you spend 2M on a very good imported car from America (Honda, Toyota, etc) as advertised here in Nairaland. Many of those cars have done less that 20000m (some even less than 10k) and will serve you well for a few years or more.

Regardless of the newness of the picanto, driving on those roads in the east with trailers, lorries, luxury buses, 15 seaters and so on is no joke. They will 'blow' you off the road. Consider also the mentality of those drivers on the road. The smaller your car is, the more likely they are to 'chance' you each time they have the opportunity. Consider your safety too. We do not pray for accidents but imagine what will happen to a picanto if a bigger car (and not even a trailer) runs into it.

Picanto's are best for inner city roads where you can save on fuel costs, easily manouvre btw bigger cars and park in the smallest space. They are not built for long journeys especially on very rough roads.

Unfortunately, yes. Nigerians are more accomodating than most other people. Indians, Lebanese, philipinos etc all run successful businesses in Nigeria - while it is very very rare to find successful Nigerian businesses in those countries.

Foreign AffairsRe: Why Nigerians Don't Tap Into South African Market? by Epiphany(m): 6:15pm On Sep 21, 2009
I just want to say something . . . dont know if it is true or not. Just hear me out.

The average SAfrican (esp the male) is lazy, envious and bitter. There are similarities btw the SAfricans and the black americans. Maybe this is due to their prolonged subjugation under the white SAfricans. Their ego's, psyche and emotions have been beaten and battered to the extent that they can hardly help themselves talkless of others. They want everything on a platter of gold and do not want to work hard for anything. Even when they can work hard for these things, they have to be FORCED to do so and cannot function effectively without being told what to do and how to do it (very similar to the life of a servant/slave). Therefore, when they see other blacks (Nigerians or otherwise) working hard and making a way for themselves (honestly or otherwise), they get jealous and want to either ruin or inflict some damage.

It is a known fact that you do not have to tell a nigerian what to do and how to do it. . . all he has to do is to STUDY the system and begin to find his way. It is a known fact that he not only finds a way to do things, but continually ALTERS the methods he has found to evade the law or to beat the competition. This of course, goes against the ability of the SAfrican men who cannot nimbly alter their methods of doing things. This leads them to jealousy.

As we know too, all women love men who are innovative, confident, big spenders and of course big dreamers and smooth talkers and liars. Nigerian men are all that hence, the SAfrican women simply love our men. The SAfrican men also hate Nigerian men for this.

Putting all those things together, why would the SAfricans like or want Nigerians to come into their market to conduct businesses? Other than the fact that yes, we know that a lot of Nigerians will turn to illegal businesses to make ends meet, there are honest nigerian business men who can do well in the SA market.

i just feel that the SAfricans are afraid that once they start allowing Nigerians the free hand to enter their markets, it is only a matter of time before Nigerians begin to run the whole show. Before you know what is happening, Nigerians will start running for political office. Nigerians will become the richest in SAfrica (similar to what the Indians are doing in the UK).

Dont get my post wrong, i have met a lot of wonderful SAfrican guys who are educated and are hard workers. The truth however, is that they are very very few, compared to the majority who unfortunately, have no formal form of education.

CultureRe: Yoruba Is The Most Influential Nigerian Language. Discuss. by Epiphany(m): 5:46pm On Sep 21, 2009
AfroCynic:
This is a question my friend posed to me earlier to day and he backed it up with these points.

1. Yoruba is the language of Nigeria's most important city
Everything you have written is because of the 1st point you made. Lagos, being the former capital of Nigeria and still the commercial capital of the country is the reason for your hypothesis. Most people who stay[ed] in Lagos end[ed] up learning or understanding the language. In those days, lagos had many of the best schools (Kings College, Igbobi, CMS Grammar, Queens College) so when many of the so-called present big men/women and millitary men lived in Lag, they spoke the language. When lagos was the capital, civil servants and people from all over (north, south, east, west) were posted to Lagos to work and live - they invariably learned the language and so did their children (these children are now grown up). For importing and exporting purposes, most of the igbo and eastern traders who have 'shops' in lagos have also learned to speak the language to facilitate and further their businesses.

However, i have hear that speaking Hausa can get you into places where even English will not get you. There used to be this school of thought that if you are able to speak Hausa, it is possible to warm your way into the highest offices in the land and leave with a lot of goodies, e.g. juicy contracts, govt positions, friends in high places etc. Other than that, some have said that if you speak Hausa to a Hausa man and you are not a Hausa man yourself, he automatically takes you as a 'brother' and is pleased to help you in any way. Dont know if this is still true sha!

davidylan:
Compared to the chinese "misadventure" in Africa, white adventure in Africa has been an unmitigated disaster that we are likely never to recover from. So much for Newsweek.
So upsetting, too upsetting. Makes me think that Africa and Africans are too damn stupid. For too long, we have allowed these parasites come into our land to suck us dry, while using our money and resources to develop their own lands. Can you imagine that after the 'white' men have come in and done their own, it is the turn of the so called 'elite asians' (of which the chinese are the worst) to come in for their share now? By elite asians, i mean the Chinese (Huawei, ZTE, Railway contractors, Oil companies), Indians (mittal, Tata, IT companies, Telecoms), Koreans (Daewoo Heavy Industries, LG) and others.

Can anyone give me the name of one, JUST ONE AFRICAN company operating in any of these countries or anywhere in Asia? Or name one African country that is CONTRACTED by any Asian government to help with development or infrastructure building?

Stupid Africans (before anyone starts crucifying me for calling us stupid, i am an African too)
Foreign AffairsRe: Why Do Nigerians Look Up To America? by Epiphany(m): 4:58pm On Sep 21, 2009
Dude, ALMOST ALL countries look up to America. . . or did so at one time or the other. I dont think it is only Nigerians that look up to America. However, these days, you can see that countries like Germany, France, and others in the far east in Asia are trying to rise up and show that they can survive and prosper without any interference or friendship with the US. There is evidence of this from the G-8 or G-whatever, that was held in the UK - where it was as if there was a marriage ONLY btw Gordon Brown and Obama. Sarkozy and Merkel of Germany were supposedly 'aloof' and seemingly did not want to partake of whatever UK and US were up to. However, all that could have been 'shakara'. Of course, we know of the relationship btw China, Russia and the US, where they all regard each other with a lot of suspicion

Secondly, whoever holds the strings controls the puppet. America holds UN, World bank, the security council etc in the palms of their hands or have the largest voting rights or say in the affairs of those bodies. The implication of this is that the government of Nigeria (or many other governments in the world) has to dance to whatever tune these people (esp the US) play so that they can continually receive their loans, handouts, or be in their good books. Example is that Nigeria is presently vying for a seat in the UN security council. If they are on very very very good terms with the US, it is possible that the US will use their influence with other members like the UK, Germany, France etc to 'help' Nigeria get that position.

With respect to the ordinary man on the road looking up to the US. . . who else can he look up to? We all wear designs from american designers, watch american movies on tv, read american books and comics, recently - drive american (spec) cars (or cars imported from America) and to a large extent, want to live the american dream. We (or they) all believe that on reaching America, life will be good, so the aspiration of everyone is to do anything to get to america.
PoliticsRe: How Nigerians Are Abused In China. by Epiphany(m): 3:02pm On Sep 21, 2009
. . . and to imagine that Nigeria is hosting a large proportion of Chinese businesses ranging from oil and gas, to telecoms to manufacturing. A lot of the motorcycles the okada people ride are from china - Jincheng and co. They are slowly gaining ground in our dear country. It is not unusual to see the chinese people in even the remotest parts of Nigeria - i saw some Chinese people in a village in Delta state on my way to my village once. However, it is not as if all their businesses in Nigeria are all legit. They are the forerunners in the pirating trade because daily, we hear of one chinese ring or the other being broken. Their work ethics in Nigeria are appalling too. They use people like slaves without any proper compensation.

Like a lot of people have said, they do not respect anything like human rights. The way their government treats their own people is bad, so if you expect them to treat Nigerians any different, you expect wrong. China has some of the worst cases of human rights issues in the world - most of which goes un-reported.

I often wonder what Nigerians are doing in that country. As far as i am concerned, i have no pity for anyone who goes there without a good reason and gets caught. They have it coming to them. China is much different from the western world. If you get caught in the western world without proper papers, you may still be treated with some dignity. In China, you are worse than an animal.

My advice is that they should find a way, anyway to leave that country. China is not a place you want to stay in illegally. Looking to our government to help is a waste of time. They are all as confused as can be and do not have the compassion to help anyone anywhere

Aondoakaa is simply acting out a script from the FG. Sadly, the script is conflicting with other scripts prepared for Waziri and Sanusi by the same FG.
Who is fooling who?

Common, a lot of guys are far bigger than Nigeria as we chat. Talk about IBB, OBJ, Kalu, Sultan of Sokoto, PDP, Shekarau, Yerima, Ibori, Egwu, George, Anenih etc. These guys can single handedly make, change, break or upturn a law to favor themselves and to the detriment of the entire Nigerian nation.
Aondoakaa, Iwu and co are just front men.
I second this! It seems as if the puppet masters who put Yar'adua in power are the ones also controlling Aandoakaa and because of this, Yar'adua cant do anything. The IBB's, OBJ's and Ibori's and others are the REAL MEN IN CHARGE!
