Interesting. West Africans, Nigerians, taking over from the Camorra, in their own country? Well, thats not new. We remember that the Italians also did the same thing in America many years ago when their mafia organizations ran everything from smuggling to prostitution to drugs to bootlegging.
This story is sad. Very sad.

Politics / Re: Tell Us About Your Nigerian Role Model by Epiphany(m): 2:16pm On Nov 30, 2009
Jarus:

Back to NL Politics sections, after being busy with sallah activities in the village over the last few days. A lot of interesting things had actually gone on while I was away, especially the thread on critical reasoning, which I just saw now, and can't help reading the incisive analyses by a chance team of Nairaland's most informed political analysts, as opposed to news-copying-and-pasting posters.

On the topic at hand, I have said elsewhere on Nairaland in similar topics, that my Nigerian role models are three:

1, FOLA ADEOLA: Founding CEO of GTB and founder of FATE foundation. I chose this man as my role model when I was in my first year in the university. I read about him and chose to tread his path. His corporate governance credentials endeared him to me. He is core professional with high regard for ethics. He is the man behind the brand GTB boasts of today. With a humble background and an HND from a Polytechnic, Fola broke barriers to become one of Nigeria's most respected CEOs of the time. After leaving the corporate scene(at operational, day-to-day management level), he set up FATE foundation.

2. WALE TINUBU: The CEO of Oando Group. It was sometime around late 2001, the newspapers were awash with a giant stride in Nigeria's home-grown entrepreneurship history. A company called Ocean and Oil, owned by a trio of young Nigerian businessmen which had been operating silently since 1994, dared to acquire Unipetrol, a government-owned oil marketing company put up for sale. The guys did not stop at that, they took over the Nigerian downstream arm of Agip. Enter Oando Plc and welcome the brain this daring foray, Wale Tinubu. And the guy was just 34. Wanting to be brief here, I will not debunk beforehand, the claim that he is fronting for some people. The claim is nothing but arrant gibberish. Yes, Wale was a silverspoon, but you need to know him and follow him closely like me to know that he is arguably Nigeria's brightest entrepreneur of his generation. His is a man of vision, a man that is demystifying the conception that multi-nationals cannot have a third-world origin. He hardly makes noise like our Harvard-trained lau-lau entrepreneur that employs people on papers. Let me just stop here because if I go on, I will do a thousand-liner on my man.

3. LAMIDO SANUSI: Former CEO of FBN and now Governor of CBN. Did I ask somebody say Jarus has stirred the hornet's nest again? Yes, it's me and Sanusi again. I have had Sanusi as one of my role models before he became this popular, before most of you knew him, before he became CBN governor. Refer to this thread that was done in March this year, far before Sanusi's name came up as candidate for CBN governorship: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-248924.0.html .
Why did he I choose Sanusi? 1, He is one the folks that demystified my long held perception that Hausa/Fulani folks are dumbheads. First northerner to become GMD of FBN in its over 100 years of existence. Lesson: Irrespective of the backwardness of your people, intellectually, you can stand out and compete with people from the other end. 2, And chiefly, I admire his having time and being knowledgeable enough outside his primary field, to contribute to national socio-political discourse despite his being a top banker that is ordinarily having meant to overtly neutral, politically. He is wide read and has a good grasp of history, philosophy and politics apart from his primary field of economics and banking.

Am I following their footsteps?
Trying to. Professionally, still meandering between going Fola Adeola way(work your way to top CEO of a company you are not necessarily the owner and become a personality brand, an institution) or Wale Tinubu way(with little resources probably from family or savings, start something local, dare, take a bold step, and go global). To the extent of ignoring one's corporate personalities, at times, and openly contributing to national discourse(in newspapers), I'm already on Sanusi path, which is only coincidental anyway, as I had been doing that even before I knew him. I only found encouragement in him. But I doubt if I can be wide-read in philosophy, politics and history as him, much as I would love to. Maybe, when I temporarily hang this morning-to-midnight corporate job and go back to school.

Hey Jarus, i love your write up. . . and how you are trying to emulate the successes of your role models into your own life. It has given me some food for thought too about how i can do the same in my life, when thinking about my own role models.

You have given me a fresh breath of determination.

And if they buy them new, you will be the first to run to nairaland to say that government is wasting tax payer's money to buy aircrafts.

Why will i do that? Have they not wasted enough of our money on silly and meaningless projects? Have they not mismanaged enough funds already? Have they not 'chopped' enough of our money?

I have always hated the 'buying second hand goods' mentality, regardless of how new they may look. Under normal circumstances, we in Nigeria should be well above that mentality. During the earlier years of our fathers, everthing they bought was new. It is these days that we have been reduced to buying second hand/tokunbo goods.
Politics / Re: Fg To Buy Five Fairly Used Helicopters For The Military by Epiphany(m): 12:05pm On Nov 27, 2009
texazzpete:

It's not 'tokunbo'. While it's not brand new, buying used millitary hardware is not so out of place.
Do you have any idea how much it could cost to purchase a brand new unit? It's far more cost effective to buy well maintained used craft with good service history.

Don't be an silly. The aircraft are being purchased from the French Government and it's almost a given that contracts for parts and equipment are already in place.
Without any access to the service record of the helicopters, calling them 'flying coffins' is pretty much FUD.

While buying used aircraft is not so out of place, I would rather they buy NEW aircraft. A country such as ours should be investing in proper and up-to-date equipment and not buying what other countries have used and want to get rid off - no matter how well maintained they are. Used millitary equipment should be left to countries like Togo and Malawi and to warlords in countries in Sudan and Congo.
If we are continually vying for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security council, we should have an up to date arsenal consisting of the latest technology in Warfare. I hate the thought of another country using something and 'dumping' it for us to use.
Foreign Affairs / Re: There Isn't Much Nigeria Businesses Can Do In South Africa by Epiphany(m): 11:02am On Nov 27, 2009
I am of the opinion that there are still opportunities for Nigerian companies in SA. . . i.e. if we as Nigerians get serious with our businesses and decide to really go international by adapting to international operating standards

The arguement you are putting forth may have been said of Indian companies 10 - 20 years ago but today, they are buying up companies around the world including the UK - which arguably, may have more regulated systems than SA.

China, another international upstart has her companies, such as Huawei and ZTE taking the world by storm and seriously giving companies like Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia, Siemens and co a run for market share. Many mobile operators are switching from the old timers like Nokia, Ericsson and co to Huawei and Zte.

Who knows, tomorrow, Adenuga may decide to buy a company like Cell C to extend his mobile reach into the SA market. Or Otedola may decide to buy into an oil marketing company in SA too!

Career / Re: Pls I'm Confused I Need Advise On My Career by Epiphany(m): 5:42pm On Nov 25, 2009
If you hate physics or feel you are weak in that subject, do not stay in the physics department or attempt Elect Engnr. If you do that, you will be singing, dancing and eating physics until you graduate.

My own simple advice is that you should cross over to a math driven course, just like your brother suggested. If you are very very sure your knowledge is sound in that course, you can come out on top and with very good grades. The thing about the market in Nigeria is that once you are able to come out with a 2.1 or 1st in ANY COURSE, the sky is your limit. I know people (not one or two) that came out with 2.1's and above in courses like Zoology, Classics etc and are working in Accenture, KPMG, Mobil and some other Multinationals. Whereas if you read Elect or physics and come out with anything less than a 2.1, none of those companies will even consider you!

I read Elect/Elect Engnr and to be honest, I hated every minute of the course. The 5 years i spent in school were the worst years of my life. Many times, i wish i had read something else, where my interest was. If i had known, i would have gone in for Geology or even Economics. But trust the advice i got then - read elect/elect and you can get any job anywhere. No one considered what I liked or what i wanted for myself. No one considered my strenghts and likes.

Education / Re: FG Provides Free Internet To All higher institutions In Nigeria by Epiphany(m): 2:40pm On Nov 18, 2009
Its not just the free internet the universities need. Will they have enough computers and desktops and computer labs to go round? And, and and that is not all o, will there be electricity to 'coo' these rooms and labs because if there is no electricity in these labs, the computers will go kaput. And and and, that is not all, will there be effective power, electricity provided to keep these computers alive. Further more, will be power be stable enough to keep these computers in working order because unecessary power surges will kill these computers.

Like other posters have stated, how will they provide enough security in these computer labs? There will be more yahoo yahoo boys (educated ones now) on the prowl as well as plenty of porn and wrong use of these systems.

Good idea sha, by the federal govt but they should provide A COMPREHENSIVE PACKAGE OF ALL THE ABOVE and not just the 'free internet'.
Politics / Re: I Am Proud Of Nigeria No Matter What They Say. by Epiphany(m): 12:12pm On Nov 18, 2009
@walakolobo: refusing a british passport to hold on to a Nigerian one does not automatically mean you are patriotic or that you even love Nigeria. Holding a British pali just gives you options that the Nigerian one does not.

Regardless of whether Nigeria is performing or not, the world is becoming a very small place and people frequently move around and about. There are Canadians that hold American citizenship, Australians that hold british citizenship, British people with American citizenship etc. Does that mean that when these people opt for other countries' citizenship, they are not proud of their home countries? NO

My guy, i beg you to collect the British pali and hide it under your bed (if you dont want to use it right now), while you continue using the naija one. One day, you will have cause to bring out the british passport, dust it up and use it.

When all our people are queuing to run into their country, why wont they feel like that? I worked in a company where there were lots of SA's. Would you believe that many of them were working in Nigeria on visiting visa's? Meanwhile, the few times i had to travel to SA, the company had to go through hula hoops to get my visiting visas.

In this article, it is said that Yar'Adua himself made it known that btw 1999 and 2007, the administration of his predecessor spent $10 billion on the power sector without building any new power plants.
However, for the fun of it, if you google "$16 billion + Nigeria + Yar'Adua + Obasanjo", you will come up with so many news clippings and stories of that exact amount from different news sources. So who do we believe? Or are we to say that ALL these stories are fabricated? ALL?

I understand that this thread is digressing so instead of taking it further away from its topic, lets just agree that OBJ Mismanaged SOME BILLIONS OF DOLLARS. It does not matter what the amount was. If ever he (or his administration) is found guilty, mismanaging 1billion or 10billion will still fetch those involved some stiff penalties.

Family / Re: Must The Husband Be 100% Responsible For The Family Bills? by Epiphany(m): 4:25pm On Nov 10, 2009
These days, it is becoming increasingly difficult (in most parts of the world) for a man to foot all the bills of a home alone. That is why women are increasingly being encouraged to work or do something that brings in some form of income - No matter how little. This in all ways augments the earning power of the home.

Una wan kill the man? He will pay all utility bills, fees for kids, vacations, maintain the cars etc. Yes, it is possible for the man to do all these. IF HE IS MEGA RICH. However, if he is a salary earner like millions there is no way he can foot all the bills

So a Nigerian that has lived in Nigeria for 20, 30 or more years and happens to move abroad, live there for 5 years and argue about the situation in Nigeria knows nothing about Nigeria?

Personally, i think that these kind of people ARE IN THE BEST POSITION TO argue about situations in our country because they have been able to experience what life and living really is. Regardless of what job and position they occupy, for those living legally (even as students) they enjoy certain amenities that many Nigerians in their life time have not yet enjoyed.
Politics / Re: Lagos Traffic: Regimented Resumption/closing Hours by Epiphany(m): 4:03pm On Nov 10, 2009
The government should create more 'business districts' to diffuse the traffic from the current rush to the certain areas of Lagos(Ikoyi, VI, Lagos Island, Apapa).  Incentives should be given to firms that agree to cite their head offices/major operations in these new districts.
By this i mean that more business districts (similar to VI and Lagos Island (CMS, Obalende) should be created at the Lekki end, Magodo areas etc. This will make the traffic movements to VI and Ikoyi less than it is today. Added to these, if the posters idea is also implemented, things would be much easier for workers and commuters.
The best solution so far will be the implementation of a reliable, modern and fast rail system that moves around Lagos at regular intervals. Something similar to the london underground but definately 'above ground' in our case. In naija, getting stuck underground because of faults will surely not be good!
Politics / Re: Nigeria Pilgrims Riot In Saudi Arabia by Epiphany(m): 3:41pm On Nov 07, 2009
The frustrations of the pilgrims should not be taken out on the Saudi people. Their anger should be vented upon the federal government, here in Nigeria. They should have come back to Naija to stage this protest in front of Aso Rock or the National Assembly complex.
It is the Nigerian image as a whole that is being insulted in Saudi and not the individual pilgrims. If Nigeria was a powerful country amongst other highly influential and powerful countries, will the Saudi's try this?

Romance / Re: How Can I Make My Wife Happy Again? by Epiphany(m): 5:22pm On Nov 05, 2009
Good man, good man.
Before you start spending money on holidays and expensive gifts, just let her know you are thinking about her. When you are in the office or away from her, send her romantic text messages. Call her a few times during the day, just to ask her how she is doing. . .or just to tell her that you love her and are thinking about her.
On your way home, buy one of those 'i love you cards' from a shop somewhere. Dont buy those cheap N50 cards. Buy something that she can keep or frame (some cards actually have those exotic looks).
Take her out to dinner. . . or lunch.
Take her to a movie or one of those shows they usually show in theatres
If you can cook (or even if you cant) tell her you want both of you to make dinner or lunch. It will help both of you communicate while you are busy doing the chore
Once in a while, when you are passing by her, pinch her bum, or give it a good mischievious squeeze as you pass by. Run your hands across her boobs. . .

There are millions of things you can do to make her laugh and forget her troubles. Best of all, tell her to share her problems or fears or challenges with you. SIT AND LISTEN WITHOUT INTERRUPTING. Sometimes, women just want someone to listen to them talk.

PapaBrowne:

To be sincere, I would have preferred Sanusi as an EFCC Chairman. That job is more suitable for the guy. He isn't smart enough to be CBN Governor.

This is a good idea. Never thought of Sanusi in EFCC but thinking about it now, it could have worked. He would have been a relentless EFCC chairman

Secondly, like many have stated already, 250K is so small that their monitoring will be so occupied by transactions being carried out every half hour that they will have to increase that amount to something larger.

Lets not lose focus however. While some think that Sanusi has not done anything and others think that he has, the news that emanated from the banks concerning the kind of things the managers did was/is not palatable. They flaunted all financial and banking ethics. Secondly, how would we have known that our home grown millionaires owe these banks billions of Naira. . . and not just that - the fact that these so called loans are non performing was equally annoying. Hence, we all know that our millionaires are living on/off borrowed money.

If those are the only things that Sanusi brought to the fore, he has done some good work at least.

Compared to the other leaders we have, Yar'Adua et al, Sanusi is doing okay. Radical or not!
