Dude.. I sat in a car.. Drove around a city for the first time... Took pictures and posted..

First they said its not Owerri.. Then they said I took pictures of gutters, then they said I was biased.. Then it they posted pictures that they said was Owerri, I proved them wrong as those pictures were old and lifted off a propaganda website, then they started posting pictures of Port-Harcourt, they were caught, then it was that I was biased... LIKE SERIOUSLY?!!!!

This is the result of a non performing government.. Why are they taking the thing so perosnal?! If they are embarassed, then they should speak to rochas...

@Okija - stop replying anyone that is harrassing you. Just post your pictures, make your comments and retire. I have long learnt that you can never satisfy everyone. If you had posted all beautiful pictures, people will come out and say you are lying and that you should post the 'real' pictures. Now that you have posted the 'real' pictures, people are complaing about the quality and so on.

Dude, you are getting a taste of what it is like to rule Nigerians - when in fact, you are only dealing with those from Owerri. Imagine if you have all the tribes and languages and religions arguing with you.

This is the best thread ever, on this forum. Believe me, I 'fell' into it and went through all 42 pages on my phone. I will have to go through again with my laptop in the morning.

As someone born in the 70's, I am so familiar with almost all the topics.......and I am not ashamed to say that going down memory lane brought tears to my eyes.

Nigeria has really suffered especially when one can say that the days of old are far better than today!

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Can One Settle Down With Teaching In A Private School by Epiphany(m): 1:22pm On Dec 05, 2012
Wow, anytime I read threads like this, my heart goes out to people who have spent years in school only to come out and start looking for jobs. One of the most painful things that one can go through is to have your dreams shattered because you cannot do what you want to do. When we end up settling for the next best or the only available thing, dreams start to fade away, little by little.

Anyway, back to the subject. I attended a private school some 20 years ago. One thing I noticed about that school is that a lot of the teachers that got jobs there, never stayed beyond 5 - 10 years. What they did was that while they were teaching, they enrolled in the nearest 'good' university to pursue their MSc's and even PhD's. Once they got these degrees, they were off to lecture in the universities and some even got jobs in the private sector. Some others got together (maybe about 3 - 5) and started their own schools and creche's and educational institutions.

The thing you should do really is to take the teaching job for now. If it is or was never your dream to teach, hold on to whatever dream you have and give yourself the next, say 5 - 10 years to pursue whatever you initially wanted to do. Yes you can get married or settle down, but that means you must, or should share your dream with your spouse so that she can also align with it. Maybe she has her own dreams too, dreams which you both can manage together. This may mean that you delay having kids for now or even if you do, maybe have only one for now. Dude, you are 30. you can still make things happen for yourself so that by the time you get to 40, you are nearer your goal than you are now.

Dont give up or resign to teaching if it is not what you want to do. Some people have made suggestions. When you are teaching, you can engage in a few extra classes. If you are in a private school, that may mean that you are teaching kids from middle to upper backgrounds. Be a good teacher, enjoy what you do. Rub off positively on the kids and you will go far. I have heard of teachers becoming close to families of the students. You never really know where your next break will come from!

Just be positive and have a dream and pursue it.

Lovely thread, nice pictures. If things can improve a lot more in Lagos, then there is a reason for me to think of coming back home. Like a lot of people have said, there are slums everywhere, but we never see them. New York, London, LA, Jo'Burg etc will always show the wonderful parts of their city but never the slums so ROSSIKE is doing nothing wrong by showing these lovely parts

Thanks for the quick response, Inspired. I assume that those prices include all the cost involved in getting the car out of customs? if we place the order, can you arrange the engraving, registration etc?

Let me talk to them about it. Will get back to you in a few days. I just need to convince them cos view are 'old school' and don't believe in buying stuff without physically seeing the goods. Lol

Hi Inspired,

Looking at either a clean Honda Accord or Toyota Camry 2008 model. Should be 4 cylinders, alloy wheels BUT with MANUAL transmission. Is that possible? Manual because its for my parents and they dont want to start learning how to drive an automatic. How much will it cost to land? They are the ones paying o, so sofry sofry on the price.

If you let me know quick enough and the prices are favourable, can i get some pictures? They are looking to get this urgently,

. . . . one woman parted with 300k dollars? WTH!!!!!!!!

While i cannot condone what these Nigerian guys have done (yes, they should rot in the Malaysian prisons), there is an element of 'foolishness' on the part of the victims. Why should you part with so much money, without ever having SEEN this person? With that amount of money, they should have carried their two legs to fly across to physically meet with these people before parting with such money.
Romance / Re: Have U Ever Cheated On your Bf/gf? by Epiphany(m): 12:10pm On Dec 27, 2011
Orikinla:

But let us say the truth.
Over 90% of girlfriends and boyfriends cheat.
Only very few don't cheat.

It is not easy to be faithful to someone you are not yet married to, because you don't feel committed to mere dating someone until you have agreed to marry.

Being faithful was tough for me whilst in a long distance relationship when daily temptations kept coming.
I had to restrict myself from interacting with impressionable and vulnerable girls and women.

Sometimes it is really too much to bear.
I nearly fell for the pressure of even married ex-girlfriends in the absence of my woman.
When a young lady comes to spend time with you for hours and she is too hot to resist, only God can help you. Because, naturally you are wired to respond to your intimate urge.

So, those who can resist temptations and refuse to cheat are a rare breed.
We are even an endangered species these days that promiscuity is the zing thing.

And  you can cheat someone you truly love.

There is something I call mercy cheating.
Like having mercy on a sex starved widow or grass widow and sex starved girlfriend, you just oblige out of pity.

In many places in Igbo land, young village men and even married men take turns to sleep with the young widows with the permission of their wives and elders.
In fact, it is a duty to make the widows happy and healthy for procreation.

There are many sex starved women I would have obliged to help, but for the sake of mutual fidelity to my woman, I denied the poor women and they were disappointed.

Lol. wink grin

Are you joking? Tell me you are joking, pls.

Dont understand something here. Why is it that the young Nollywood actors/actresses are flaunting their 'wealth' everywhere and can afford all the luxuries in life - while the older ones are 'poor' and cannot afford top of the range healthcare? I mean, this guy should not be looking for money for treatment na?He is one of those actors that the younger ones look up to. OR IS SOMETHING WRONG SOMEWHERE. Are the younger actors doing things that we dont know about? How come they are so 'rich'?

Actually I will bet on it being the case. It is more likely the case that he will die, and the whole country will mourn him, probably a national holiday too. Even on Nairaland, we will create so many threads to PRAISE him and honor him. After-all, this is Nigeria.

+1: I totally agree

When IBB dies, he will die peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by ministers, former heads of state and maybe even the serving head of state (or at least, a serving VP). He will be given a state burial, that day will be declared a holiday and like Kobo says, the worms will come out of the woodwork on Nairaland to praise the man.

'Afterall, this TRULY, is Nigeria!

Look, OUR FG does not need anyones money. They have too much of their own and thats why they continually mis-use the funds.

Somehow, i dont like the way things in the country are going. With the way other countries have been rising up and fighting against their leaders and dictators, Nigerians may just be doing the same thing in a few years to come - if Jonathan and others continue like this.
It will get to a stage where mass disturbance will happen, just like that. For those who think that it will NEVER happen, YES, think about the countries in North Africa. Whoever thought that people will rise against Gaddafi, Mubarak and co? Whoever thought that in the UK, the riots of London and its environs will happen?
Removing the subsidy will just cause untold hardship. For God's sake, how will people survive, when the price of foodstuff goes up? How will they survive when they cannot move from a to b to conduct their businesses in the marketplace?
Travel / Re: Customs Checks At Murtala Muhammad Airport, Lagos by Epiphany(m): 1:11pm On Sep 08, 2011
unipol:

let me make it clear that this airport workers are too moneyish and can do more than our expectations, firstly, they use their inner eyes to know you status, as in whether you are a professor, doctor or lawyer. if you look ordinarily and they see that you don't have any body arlound, then you are finished whether you have complete document or not.
the first time travellers are the greatest victim of this criminality. sometimes they go some extra miles by even contacting other security on high ways to let them worry you. just to make sure you are frustrated.
solution, is that we should always learn to poss like an important personel whenever we are passing the airport by using the most couragious words to tell them no fearlesly and unshakebly. we should let our relation acompany us to airport. then we should use hiden camera to expose them.

I agree somewhat with this. COMPOSURE. POISE. ATTITUDE. Whether you are a first time traveller or not, carry yourself properly. Dress well (esp if its your first time. Dont wear like full agbada o. Lolllll). Put on a proper shirt, shoes and be neat. Not hooded tops or ripped jeans etc. Dont overload yourself (too much luggage) and even if you do, be prepared to pay for your excess luggage and not argue. Dont attempt to carry luggage that should be checked in as hand luggage (i have seen outrageous stuff being taken in as hand luggage)

As it is everywhere, with the police, government officials etc (both in nigeria and even abroad) when you look respectable and these people dont know who you are, they will more often than not, approach you cautiously and politely and not ask you OPENLY for bribes. If they feel you are a 'small boy or girl' they will ask you for bribes and threaten to delay you. For Gods sake, why should and how can you be delayed and end up missing your flight? Na die for them o, if they try that. SOMEONE WILL PAY FOR MY AIR FARE. WTH.

Even when you get to the European or American end, your composure is what makes the difference sometimes. I often hear of nigerians getting stopped or harrassed at foreign airports. I have travelled extensively around Africa, Europe and the US and when immigration or customs officials stop me anywhere (Nigeria or abroad), i look them in the eye and answer them in short, sharp sentences. Of course, try not to be rude or pompous or proud or haughty. I dont 'over' smile or try to joke or make small talk because for these oyibos, na profiling dem dey take undo people.

toyemz:

true talk
i remember once when i was in murtala Mohammad airport
i was approaching the table in trepidation
kos loads of people had said bad stuff about the Nigerian custom and immigration people
so i didn't know what to expect
when it was my turn to my surprise i heard them speaking in Hausa,so i just listened and waited for them to finish
basically in translation they were saying this one looks rich oh( meaning my suitcase) and they were expecting loads of money
i just looked at them and when they had finished i greeted them in Hausa
and asked how was their day
they immediately smiled and said oh this is one of ours
and because of the good banter i just gave them N20,000 to share
my bags weren't opened at all

Sorry to say this, but it is people like you that make it difficult for others. Why on earth should you part with such money, whether 20k or 2k? When you get to the US or Europe, regardless of how nice the banter is with the officials at the airport, will you give them 50 dollars or pounds?

If you have such money to part with, then i assume that you should be in the position to SAY NO to them and stand your ground. You should be 'big' enough to tell them politely, that you dont have any money to give to them. Simple and Short!

Crime / Re: Policemen Beat Driver, Set His Bus Ablaze by Epiphany(m): 5:53pm On Aug 19, 2011
I am not an anarchist but i think that it will be nice if this guy can get about 20 - 30 people to march into that police station and BEAT THE HELL OUT OF ALL THE POLICEMEN THEY FIND INSIDE THERE.

This should happen simultaneously in about 10 other stations around Lagos. Just beat the policemen well and leave. Surprise them so that they wont have access to their guns.

Maybe if people start 'taking the law' into their own hands, the police will learn a lesson.
Health / Re: Setting Up A Healthcare Facility In Nigeria by Epiphany(m): 10:49am On Aug 19, 2011
To start off the business, i think you should first of all get acquainted with a lot of the private clinics in an urban area such as Lagos, PH or Abuja (if you are going to be located in either of them). This will ensure you get good referrals from them and of course, prompt payment. If your services are good and up to speed, you can be sure that your news will travel far and wide by word of mouth and/or from the recommendations of the private clinics you have worked with.

I think that once you have a nice stream of revenue coming in and you weigh your options very well, you can then begin to think about engaging in any kind of community work - where the income you are collecting from the private 'high payers' may begin to subsidize what you get from the (not so rich) communities

Again, you have to think about things like fuel for Generators/electricity to run your machines, employment, continuous training and retention of competent staff, renting of adequate facilities, phone lines, IT equipment, maintenance of your equipment (and believe me, this is a very difficult one unless you are in partnership and/or sign some kind of agreement with your eqpt providers).

Other things to watch out for:

Like so many have said, a lot of people may want to use your services and 'pay you later', dont go there, otherwise you will end up with lots of debtors.

If you are not going to be on ground 24/7, esp in the initial phase of the business, who is going to run it for you?

Think about how much of your profits you will re-invest in the business to carry out things like periodic overhail of equipment/services etc because for some reason our operating environment 's needs more renovation (paint beging to peel off your walls, equipment parts need frequent changing, people just dont handle things that do not belong to them, etc etc.

If i think of anymore stuff, will write on here.

PS: I once worked for RADMED Centre, a centre on Ligali Ayorinde (VI) that provides such services. I dont know if they are still there, because then, they used to be in very high demand

You dont mean it  shocked shocked shocked. AND YOU DID IT? You should have told him to get it himself.  grin

Sometimes before some girls get married, i always ask them to find out if the men they want to marry are 'house trained'. Okay on the understanding that some men are not, i ask them to find out if these men will eat food prepared by domestic help in the house (because some men demand that their wives MUST cook their food). If the men cant cook and will not eat any food prepared by domestic help, then the women entering that marriage are going to be 'slaves'.
Family / Re: House Chores: Should Husbands Chip In? by Epiphany(m): 3:58pm On Aug 10, 2011
chaircover:

It depends on the husband. Some men are very hands on and even put their wives to shame in the housework department.

I think it depends on upbringing too; all the boys brought up in my family are excellent cooks. Our parents brought us all up the same and the boys can cook and the girls can change tyres.

I have however seen families where the boys are treated like gods. These are the ones who go on to marry and expect their wives to wait on them hand and foot.

At the end of the day we are only human and any man who decides to let his wife slave day and night without him lifting a finger is only cutting his wifes life short,  inviting health problems & pretime aging for his wife. Its his choice.

He can have an exhausted & snappy wife or a content and happy wife who has time to be a wife in other areas not just housework.

1000 kisses for you o. Let me know where to meet you.

Spot on answer. I was brought up in a home where the guys can cook, bake and carry out household chores. My sisters can change tires, fix minor auto problems, change electric bulbs etc. I think it is good to allow both boys and girls interchange these duties once in a while. It not only helps them later in life, it makes them appreciate these efforts from their spouses when they get married
