Well, firstly, we are not the UK. Secondly, C of O is a 99yrs lease. All land belongs to government by our laws. Thirdly, what we pay here is Land use charge(LUC), which is paid annually. It's usually collected by the state or local authorities (just like council tax in the UK). The only problem I see here is that the Minister want to do Initial Gra Gra to show that he's working.

They can still take it from you. Nobody fully owns land in nigeria. If government wants to use it, they will collect it and compensate you. The compensation is when you have the legit documents.

Wow, lol this has nothing to do with country its a term in land acquisition, just like in Law and in accountancy. for Example, I know the Lands that are Leased hold in Sapele local government area of Delta state cos ,I went to the registry to search when a friend wanted a land for petrol station.AT and P in Sapele LGA of Delta state leased the land they occupied then for 99 years from the Ogodo community back i n the days.
If anyone knows Sapele very well almost all the Lands in Abeke road Opp Remand Home and all the Primary schools along it are all on leased Land to the Sapele community. If a government allows you to build houses on its land, it is leased to you.

In Land acquisition there is what we call free hold and lease hold, Free hold is o ne you dont lease from govt and there is nothing like Rent however Lease hold is leased form the govt so you pay rent on it.There are Biz people round the world their biz is to buy the lease of properties and collect rent. This is where the word Flat comes out from you buy your flat in high rise bot the space the flat occupies is rented if this makes any sense?
