Politics › Kachikwu Unseated As OPEC President After 2 Days by erunz(op): 6:38am On Dec 06, 2015
The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has named Mohammed Al Sada to succeed Nigeria’s Ibe Kachikwu as the organisation’s conference president. Kachikwu, minister of state for petroleum, became OPEC president only on Wednesday, replacing Diezani Alison-Madueke.

However, a fresh election was made on Friday at the 168th ordinary meeting of the organisation in Vienna, Austria, Kachikwu’s first meeting at the helm. In a statement by the organisation, registering the resumption of Indonesian as an OPEC member, the oil cartel declared the new holders of other offices.

“In approving Indonesia’s resumption of its full membership in the organization, the conference extended a warm welcome to its delegation, headed by HE Sudirman Said, minister of energy and mineral resources of Indonesia,” OPEC secretariat revealed.
Dr. Ibe KachikwuDr. Ibe Kachikwu
“The conference elected HE Dr Mohammed Bin Saleh Al Sada, minister of energy and industry of Qatar, as president of the conference for one year, with effect from 1st January 2016, and HE Ali I. Naimi, minister of petroleum and mineral resources of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as alternate president, for the same period. The conference failed to curb oversupply, as it banked on non-OPEC supply to drop in 2016, when the market is expected to experience a surge in demand.

“The latest numbers see OECD and non-OECD inventories standing well above the five-year average. Having reviewed the oil market outlook for 2015, and the projections for 2016, the Conference observed that global economic growth is currently at 3.1% in 2015 and is forecast to expand by 3.4% next year.

“In terms of supply and demand, it was noted that non-OPEC supply is expected to contract in 2016, while global demand is anticipated to expand again by 1.3 mb/d.”

The Conference decided that its next ordinary meeting will convene on Thursday, June 2, 2016 in Vienna, Austria.

Politics › Kogi Political Impasse May Lead To Death Of APC’ by erunz(op): 6:20am On Dec 06, 2015
THE dream of the All Progressesives Congress (APC) of taking Nigerians from the dungeon of slavery to the promised land may turn out to be a mirage, should the party fail to adequately resolve the present political impasse that is presently threatening the peace of Kogi State. This is the position of APC stakeholders from Kogi State domiciled in Taraba State.

The stakeholders, who made this known yesterday through Hon. Ben Adaji, while briefing newsmen in Jalingo, also accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of “conniving with APC leaders at the National Secretariat to thwart the political ambition of James Abiodun Falake.”

Rather than bring in Bello Yusuf as a replacement for late Prince Audu Abubakar as the party governorship candidate, the party, according to Adaji, ought to adhere to the voices of the people by “allowing James Faleke to take over the mantle of leadership.”

In his words: “We have been watching the political development in Kogi State since the death of Abubakar Audu” adding that “as a stakeholder and strong member of APC, I want to blame INEC for the ongoing political crises in Kogi state.”

Wondering why INEC has decided to make themselves available as a “destructive tool” in the hands of the leadership of the APC at the national level, Adaji observed that late Audu has a joint ticket with Faleke, hence the need for the party to allow Faleke to carry on.

He described the action taken by the party to favour Bello Yusuf as “unfair to the people of Kogi State and Nigerians at large.”

APC at the national level, as suggested by Adaji, “should put their house in order because the same impunity that took place in is what is presently happening in APC.”

Adaji, who was visibly dejected, opined, “if care is not taken, APC will as well go down the drain like PDP, but God forbid.”

For the danger of going down the drain to be averted, APC, as solicited by Adaji, “should allow the voice of the people to prevail,” stressing that, “we are calling APC to do what is right in order to keep the unity of the part afloat.”

Also not comfortable with the increase in poverty and scarcity of petroleum products, Adaji observed that the same poverty that pervaded PDP government is what Nigerians are witnessing today, adding that, “President Buhari should also know that people are still suffering because what we are witnessing now is worse than what we experienced under PDP

By Charles Kumolu

THE governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief Timipre Sylva was conspicuously absent at the governorship election debate convened for the candidates of all the participating political parties in forthcoming election in Bayelsa State.

Only Serikae Dickson and Moses Siasia of the PDP, and Peoples Democratic Movement, PDM, were at the debate. A source in the Sylva camp said the candidate was busy campaigning yesterday.

The two spoke on how they would pilot the state in the areas of agriculture, economy, security, diversification of the economy and employment generation.

According to Dickson: ‘’For more than three years, we have raised the bar on security, we have invested in critical infrastructure. The job is not finished yet. We are running a transparent regime on the revenue profile by curbing corruption. We don’t have the resources to satisfy the greed of some people. If we allow greed, Bayelsa will go back to where it was.”

On his part, Siasia said: ‘’the diversification of our economy is long overdue. This is the time to diversify. I believe that it is imperative that my government takes deliberate step on that. In achieving that, we will focus on oil palm production, rice farming and plantain processing. As a people, we will have to build investors’ confidence to be able to achieve diversification.”

The debate was ongoing as at press time.

Politics › Buhari Administration’s Anti-corruption War Political — Shehu Sani by erunz(op): 10:33am On Dec 02, 2015
The Senator representing Kaduna Central in the Nigerian Senate, Shehu Sani, on Tuesday challenged the Code of Conduct Bureau to look into asset declarations of other Governors who served at the same time as the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, saying politics should not be mixed with anti-graft war.
Mr. Sani spoke at the 8th Forum of the laureates of Nigerian National Order of Merit in Abuja where he criticized Nigeria’s anti-corruption campaign as being driven by political considerations.
According to him, after insurgency, no issue should dominate national discourse more than corruption. He said political considerations could hamper the anti-graft war.
Mr. Sani said corruption had consequences, referring to the ongoing investigation into arms deal supervised by the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.
“Corruption has consequences as seen in the arrest of those in charge of security in the last administration,” Mr. Sani said.
“Insurgency is for some industry, business enterprise and means of making money.
“Even Governors would say they allocate hundreds of millions to security but when you go there you won’t find anything.
“They say because of allocation to security they can build schools. So it is for all of us to see why we have not won the war against insurgency and why people are killed because of corruption,” he said.
“Politics mixed with corruption will take us nowhere,” Mr. Sani said.
“It is only in Nigeria that one says because somebody has contributed to the success of the ruling party, corruption charges should be withdrawn against him. But if he falls out of favour tomorrow, then, EFCC will bring up the remaining charges.”
He then queried why the Federal Government would arraign Mr. Saraki for alleged false declaration of assets without causing same action against others who served as governors when the Senate President did.
“If Saraki is tried for falsely declaring his assets since 2003, CCB should do same to all others who served in that era.
“Many issues that have to do with laws are stained by politics and they lose their credibility,” he said.
Speaking further, he challenged public officers to publicly declare their assets.
He said, “After President Muhammadu Buhari declared his assets, I followed him and did same. But only about three of us have done so out of all public officials in the country.
“Some people will say they are like Buhari in everything. When he says change, they also say change. But on the issue of asset declaration, they failed to be like President Buhari.”
He reiterated the support of the National Assembly for Mr. Buhari and assured that the Senate is ready to get and utilize inputs from the public.
“Let Director of Public Prosecution be independent of the Attorney General”
Also speaking, former President of the Court of Appeal, Ayo Salami, said anti-corruption war would be effective if the Director of Public Prosecution becomes independent of the Attorney General of the Federation which is held as political appointment.
According to the retired Justice, the DPP was insulated and not under AGF under the 1960 Constitution.
“But now the decision to prosecute or not is political because the DPP is under Attorney General,” he said, adding that “it began when Elias came from Oxford and he thought the DPP should not be earning more than him and should be taking order from him.
He said the DPP must be insulated and his removal should be approved by the Senate only.

Politics › Why Edo State’s Loan Request Was Rejected, By DMO by erunz(op): 9:50am On Dec 01, 2015
By Omoh Gabriel

The Director General, Debt Management Office, DMO, Dr. Abraham Nwankwo, yesterday, said that the controversial loan request of Edo State Government in the last administration was refused because the state government wanted to borrow from banks in anticipation of loans from the World Bank.

He said that Edo State Government wanted to take a bridging loan from commercial banks as it was waiting to get loans from the World Bank.

He said after due analysis of the application that was made to the Ministry of Finance which DMO was asked to assess, it was found that while the World Bank loan was being offered at concessionary interest rate, the state wanted to borrow from banks at commercial interest rate and would use the World Bank loan to off-set the loans obtained from banks.

He said the state was duly advised that it was not economical for it to use loans obtained at very low interest rate to off-set loans it was planning to take from banks at higher interest rate, as it would cost the state more than what it got from the World Bank facility to liquidate the loans from the banks.

He said the state got the World Bank facility it was waiting for that had already been approved, adding that there was no political undertone ón the issue.

Dr. Nwankwo said that Nigeria was currently near full unemployment of its resources and has a lot of room to play around with to grow the economy.

He said that while other developed economies were near full employment of their internal resources, Nigeria has a lot of human, natural and material resources that have idle and excess capacity, noting that if Nigerians were committed to developing the nation, the nation has the potential of overcoming its current challenges in three to four years.

He said that foreign investors who have waning sentiment on Nigeria markets were doing so because they did not understand the strength of the Nigerian economy.

He said there were a lot of idle resources that, when fully tapped, could jump start the economy.

He said because of the lack of understanding by these investors and officials of the World Bank, they had advised that Nigeria could borrow up to 56 per cent of its current Gross Domestic Product.

He said that Nigerians should develop positive attitude toward everything Nigerian and change the wrong negative perception of the country’s investment climate by foreign investors.

He said that the delisting of Nigeria from JPMorgan had no direct effect on Nigeria bond market as the market was already developed before the bonds were listed.

There is currently an outbreak of violence at the headquarters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja. About 1, 000 youths are at the secretariat of the party where APC leaders are holding a meeting over the Kogi state election.

They came in buses marked ‘Dekina’, a local government area in the‎ state. On sighting Yahaya Bello, who arrived at 2:48pm, they went out of control, attempting to attack him. It took the effort of security agents to smuggle Bello from their midst.

The youths are believed to be supporters of James Faleke, running mate to the late Abubakar Audu, and Bello, the preferred choice of the APC for Saturday’s supplementary election. More to follow…
