The original is oily (both on the body and after cooking) while the other specie isn't.

The marks on the original are more visible than the other specie

Its colour is closer to silver while the other has the colour of note

It tastes better while the other has about the same taste as hache fish.

The easiest way, however, to tell the difference is by pressing the fish to see how oily it is.

I was about 9 years old and it was ogbono soup. My aunt had bought the ingredients to make the soup in the evening upon her return. I took the risk as she wasn't around.
Lo and behold, it came out superb! She was happy and surprised at the same time.
