The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig
Gen YD Ahmed, has said the discharge certificate being
paraded by Enugu State Governor-elect, Peter Mbah, was not
issued by the body. Brig Gen Ahmed, while appearing on Arise TV’s breakfast programme on Friday said the argument on whether Mbah has a valid NYSC certificate or not did not arise because he has told the People’s Democratic Party’s candidate in the 2023 governorship elections that what he presented as a certificate was fake. “He came to me and I called my director to confirm the certificate and we discovered that the certificate was fake and I told him…I wonder how elites who have gone to school will resort to black market certificates. “Everyone knows how we issue our certificate in NYSC we don’t give it in hotel rooms or houses,” the DG said. Meanwhile, the Enugu state governor-elect, Peter Mbah has filed a case against the NYSC, demanding N20 billion for injuries he claimed to have been inflicted on his person due to the controversies surrounding his certificate. Recall that controversy surrounding Mbah’s discharge certificate became known publicly in February 2023, when the NYSC, in response to an inquiry by a non-governmental organisation, released a letter stating that the certificate submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission was not issued by them. https://punchng.com/enugu-governor-elects-certificate-not-from-nysc-dg/ |
Multiple social media posts claim that the recent torrential rainfall in Brazil was supposedly a result of the mockery of Christ during the 2023 carnival. “Brazil has tested little power of God a day after mocking God,” says the title of a Facebook video which has now gone viral. In another post with over 1.2 million views, a Nigerian skit maker shared the viral video of the Brazilian carnival, with the caption: “Immediately Brazilians finished mocking God with their carnival, God destroyed their city with heavy rainfall.” In the widely viewed Facebook post, with 56k likes and over 6.1k comments, the comedian infused a narration stating that a day after the 2023 carnival, where Christ was suggestively mocked during a dramatic show of artistic display, heavy rainfall with devastating effect was recorded in Brazil. Another Facebook user posted images from the purported 2023 carnival with images of flooding not related to Brazil. The post said : “Flood kills dozens in Brazil day after mocking Jesus at satanic parade. Heavy rains and floods in São Paulo state, Brazil, killed at least 36 people on Sunday 25th February 2023, after the Rio Carnival. The city of São Sebastião was one of the hardest hit with dozens of people missing after at least 50 houses collapsed.” The post also made it to Twitter , Tiktok and YouTube. In the circulating video a performer in red, depicting the devil, can be seen beating and torturing another character, stripped to the waist – looking like Christ when he was heading to the cross. The scene has been widely interpreted as the triumph of the devil over Jesus, in an attempt seeming to mock Christ. Is the circulating video from the February 2023 carnival in Brazil, and how true is the claim that 24 hours after the dramatic performance, São Paulo was hit with devastating rainfall which led to deaths and destruction? VERIFICATION A combination of keyword search and reverse image search on the keyframes revealed that the viral skit suggesting the mockery of Christ was performed four years ago. Checks by TheCable revealed that the skit was performed in March 2019, by Gaviões da Fiel, a Samba school, during the 2019 carnival in Brazil. The video, as seen on YouTube, has gathered over three million views in the last four years. The controversial skit attracted a lawsuit filed by the World Christian League. The lawsuit accused the carnival skit of being blasphemous, hence, demanded compensation of 5 million reais for moral damages. However, in 2022, Gaviões da Fiel won the lawsuit. The court of justice declared that the performance did not intend to “make the image of Jesus unworthy” or “downgrade” it. Nonetheless, the judge acknowledged that: “From a subjective point of view, some people, due to their faith, may have felt uncomfortable seeing the greatest symbol of their religion be defeated by the figure that represents evil.” The declaration added that the artistic performance “may be questioned as to its good taste”, however, it “constitutes a corollary of the fundamental right of freedom of expression”. The 2023 carnival in Brazil kicked off on February 17 and lasted till February 22. This year’s edition was highly anticipated due to the fact that the annual event was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, also the 2022 edition was reported to have been a watered-down version. . BRAZIL RECORDS ITS HIGHEST RAINFALL EVER According to the National Center for Disaster Monitoring Prediction in Brazil, the accumulation of rainfall in February 2023, in the cities of the north coast of São Paulo was the highest recorded in the country’s history. The previous high was in 2022. Flood and landslides in Sao Paulo state, Brazil, February 2023. Tarcísio de Freitas, governor of São Paulo, described the disaster as “one of the worst incidents of flooding and landslides ” in the state. On February 19, while the carnival was ongoing, heavy rainfall stormed the coastal region of the most populous South American nation . As a result of the rainfall and the flooding disaster, residents had to be evacuated from their homes. The rain was reported to have continued till the end of February, truncating the ability of emergency workers to rescue and send relief materials to victims. Also, the 2023 carnival activities were cancelled in affected areas. VERDICT The claim that the viral skit – interpreted as the mockery of Christ – led to the 2023 flood is misleading. The skit was performed in 2019, four years ahead of the devastating rainstorm recorded last February in Brazil. https://www.thecable.ng/fact-check-was-the-devastating-rainstorm-in-brazil-due-to-mockery-of-jesus/amp

The magistrate’s court sitting in Yaba, Lagos has ordered the police to detain Seun Kuti , the singer, for additional 48 hours to enable their investigation into the alleged assault of one of its officers. The singer was taken to court on Tuesday afternoon and charged with assault on a police officer. The offense is contrary to Section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act. S.A Adebese, the police prosecutor, prayed the court to remand the defendant for 21 days pending legal advice from the directorate of public prosecutions (DPP). Femi Falana, the singer’s counsel, however, pleaded with the court to not remand his client. Adeola Olatunbosun, the chief magistrate, granted the police application to keep the singer in custody but only for additional 48 hours. The magistrate also ruled that the police should complete its investigation within the next 48 hours and release Kuti on bail. The singer was apprehended in the early hours of Monday and detained at the state criminal investigation Department (SCID) popularly known as Panti. Seun’s arrest came after he was filmed assaulting a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos. A short video clip went viral on Saturday showing Kuti, who wore a red shirt and white pair of trousers, pushing the policeman, who stood beside a Toyota Hilux police van. The singer then proceeded to slap the officer while shouting, “You dey crase, you dey mad?” The footage stirred a chorus of condemnation on social media with users expressing disappointment at Kuti’s actions. https://lifestyle.thecable.ng/seun-kuti-arraigned-for-slapping-police/ |
Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the president-elect, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who flew the flag of New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the February 25 presidential election, met for four hours in Paris, France, on Monday, TheCable can report. At the centre of the discussion, TheCable understands, was the potential involvement of Kwankwaso in the in- coming administration as Tinubu plans to form a “government of national unity” — which means giving certain positions to opposition parties. The meeting also discussed issues around the election of the legislative leaders ahead of the June 13 inauguration of the 10th national assembly. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has zoned the two top positions in both chambers but some of its members are kicking against the formula and threatening to go into an alliance with the opposition to torpedo the arrangement. While APC has 59 senators and 175 members of the houses of reps, NNPP has two and 19 respectively. A simple majority of 56 senators and 181 reps are needed to elect the top two leaders in the respective chambers. Tinubu’s representatives have also been meeting with key figures in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), TheCable confirmed. The Paris meeting between Tinubu and Kwankwaso started at 12.30pm and ended at 4.45pm, insiders told TheCable. Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the house of reps and presumptive chief of staff to the president-elect, attended the meeting while Abdulmumin Jibrin, an NNPP rep-elect and former leader of a Tinubu campaign organisation, accompanied Kwankwaso. Oluremi Tinubu, senator and wife of president-elect received Kwankwaso’s wife, Salamatu. TheCable learnt that Tinubu and Kwankwaso reminisced on their relationship dating back to the national assembly in 1992. Tinubu was a senator while Kwankwaso was deputy speaker in the house of reps. TheCable understands that Kwankwaso, in principle, agreed to join Tinubu’s government subject to consultations with the stakeholders on both sides. Tinubu is expected to brief Kashim Shettima, the vice- president elect, APC governors forum and other party leaders while Kwankwaso will do same with his party leadership. TheCable learnt that Tinubu expressed concern over the strained relations between Abdullahi Ganduje, outgoing governor of Kano state, and Kwankwaso, and promised to broker peace between them. Ganduje was deputy to Kwankwaso when he was governor of Kano from 2011 to 2015 but they have soon parted ways. Tinubu polled 8,797,726 votes to win the presidential election, beating PDP’s Atiku Abubakar by a margin of of two million. However, Kwankwaso polled 1.5 million which many analysts believe were votes that could have gone to Atiku if the former Kano governor had not defected from the PDP. https://www.thecable.ng/exclusive-kwankwaso-holds-four-hour-meeting-with-tinubu-in-paris-may-join-cabinet/amp |
