PoliticsRe: Ribadu/utomi Is This The Change We Have Been Waiting For by excanny: 11:03am On Nov 28, 2010
What pedigree do the duo have?

They look perfect on paper with Utomi as the main man, and Ribadu as deputy.

Utomi is very knowledgeable in economy and has that cutting edge in policy formulation.

Ribadu should provide the discipline needed to carry out the policies.

However, i'll like to see them serve in some kind of political office(legislators, governors, or some other office in the country) to
tested.

Classroom politics is completely different from politics in the real world.

P.S

Utomi should realize that he cant go anywhere without joining a well-structured party with some level of discipline. He might want to consider ACN or the Labour Party.

Aloy_Emeka:
You can shut me up 200 times but the truth remains that the Nigerian constitution stipulates that every citizen must have freedom of religion.
It also stipulates that there are limitations to that freedom of religious association, and all other rights granted under the constitution.

If when expressing your rights, you constitute a threat to the law and order of the society by preaching hate-inspired messages that could incite violence, you have automatically lost that freedom of association.

What was taken away from them was their right of association, they are still free to practice their religion as long as it is not used to disturb the peace of others.

Maybe he thinks he's now a Monarch and doesn't realize that the NASS can throw away that bill if it doesn't catch their fancy.

He really needs to go get a shower and relax. I really dont understand why he wants to hang himself over being a President in 2011.

^^^

There's little doubt that you are have no clue when it comes to politics. And it amazes me more why you have made up your mind not to learn anything, even when it is been made clearer for you.

In it is too difficult for you to grasp, let me break it down for you. The SE's calculation benefits both ways. The support for Jonathan counts if he wins. If he loses they have a VP in the person of Soludo.

You want a Suludo/Atiku, but then you fail to look at circumstances and political experience of the duo. You forget that Atiku has been in mainstream politics as far back as the early 90's, had contested party primaries against the likes of MKO in SDP, has been the governor of Adamawa state, had been a Vice-President, defeated the likes of IBB in a recent consensus candidate contest.

What experience and achievement does Soludo have that Atiku will now become his running mate?

You make me laugh in tongues, my friend. grin

Unlike you, Soludo is willing to learn under the likes of Ekwueme and Atiku. The wise person starts from somewhere and climbs to the top. That's why only a naive person would suggest that Atiku should vice a green hound like Soludo. That is political stu.pidity in the current circumstances.

Does producing the presidency means that the future of the SE is secured? Are the other zones who have produced presidents any better? Most of them are still languishing in penury.

Anyway, if this was not coming from somebody who is on IBB's payroll i would have taken him seriously.

What will secure the future of Ndigbo is not what Uwechue does, but the focus and hardwork of Igbos.

PoliticsRe: Atiku Vs Jonathan: The Battle Of Two Ex-customs Officers by excanny: 4:17pm On Nov 26, 2010
The best political move Atiku can make now before the primaries is to pick a running mate from the SE that will surely get him delegates from Anambra, and hopefully Nnamami might influence delegates from Enugu and Ebonyi states.

This will make the road more tougher for the Jonathan's camp. Atiku gets most of the delegates from the NW and NE, and makes some inroads in the NC and SE.

Shock:
If anything, Nigeria should adopt a Jury system in its Judiciary.

A sound Judicial system that can be trusted is the initial foundations of Democracy!
I believe Nigeria is not doing badly in the Judiciary. Over the years, we've witnessed a hard-working judiciary system especially in the area of tackling the widespread election rigging that marred the 2007 general elections.

As of now, all ears are wide open to hear the outcome of the judgement of the appeal courts handling the Osun and Sokoto state disputed elections.
PoliticsShould Nigeria Copy The Democracies Of Other Countries? by excanny(op): 10:39am On Nov 26, 2010
In the First Republic(1963-66) Nigeria patterned her democracy after the British parliamentary system which produces a President and a Prime Minister as the heads of government and cabinet respectively.

The Second Republic(1979-83) saw Nigeria modelling her democracy after the American presidential system which produces a President as the only head of government, and it is still in use today.

These two sample democracies still have many differences with what is practiced in Nigeria in the areas of run-off elections, referendums, and some many other contrasts.

Should Nigeria copy the democratic processes of other countries or develop our own type?
PoliticsRe: Atiku Should Challenge Jonathan To A Televised Debate ! ! ! by excanny: 8:47am On Nov 26, 2010
mikeansy:
What is wrong if we have one now? What are you guys scared off?

Obama was slugging it out with Hilary Clinton.

As a matter of fact the PDP intra party debate means more than the general one because whoever emerges the PDP is almost sure to get elected in 2011. So lets have a debate between these two devils right now so folks can actually make their mind up.
What is wrong is that it will not be in line with the purpose of organising election debates, which is to influence the voting decision of the members of the general public, not just for the sake of having one.

Bringing in an Obama vs Clinton election debate as an example for a similar Jonathan vs Atiku debate is comparing 2 different things.

The democratic processes in the U.S is very different from what is practiced in Nigeria. In the American democratic system, members of the public who are registered voters can take part in the primary elections held independently by various states
and vote, just like in the general elections, to select their party's flagbearers. In this kind of direct primaries, an intra-party debate is appropriate in guiding the registered member of the public in voting and nominating candidates in their parties.

In Nigeria, what we have are primary elections in which registered voters can not take part in choosing party's flagbearers. This is done strictly by a few delegates who are card-carrying members of the party in a national or state convention.

So, of what use is an intra-party debate here? Members of the general public are not allowed by Nigerian election laws to vote in the primary elections of political parties to select the flagbearers. Any influence that an intra-party debate can have on the audience may not be reflected in the parties' choice of candidates.

Personally, i would want to see such intra-party debates between aspirants, and even take part in selecting the right candidates in a primaries. But we need to modify our electoral laws first to enable such a direct participation by the general public.
CultureRe: Igbo Village In Virginia Nearing Completion. by excanny: 7:33am On Nov 26, 2010
ChinenyeN:
Whoa, let's not be hasty now, tossing words around like that.
I may have used the word 'aro' loosely, but what i meant was all those groups involved in the Aro Confederacy and some other remote allies.

It only took the defeat of the slave trading ring (headed principally by Aro forces who conducted several raids neighbouring communities to capture the inhabitants and sell them off as slaves) for the slave trade to end in Igboland, even when it was outlawed internationally some 60 years ago in 1833 or thereabout.

Personally, i have nothing against the Aros. I'm not just making up facts here. there's been similar calls from various quarters, and if the wider society demands such an apology from the king pins of that slave trading act, those concerned should do so.
PoliticsRe: Atiku Should Challenge Jonathan To A Televised Debate ! ! ! by excanny: 12:58am On Nov 26, 2010
Such a intra-party debate is irrelevant and a waste of time. The general public do not have a say in who the parties field as their flag bearer. So, even if an aspirant impresses the public in such kind of debate, it may not be reflected in the primary elections.

We only need to wait until the parties have selected their candidates before organizing an inter-party public debates, just like it's always been done in the past.

Anyway, IMHO these duo do not even qualify to be state governors let alone presidents.

I'll rather love to see a presidential debate between Pat Utomi and Donald Duke.
CultureRe: Igbo Village In Virginia Nearing Completion. by excanny: 12:18am On Nov 26, 2010
Only the Aros should apologize to all Igbos for the atrocities of the slave trade committed against their own brothers.

And the Ngwas should be thanked for opposing and finally leading the British to defeat the Aro Confederacy, thus ending slave trade in Igbland.

The Aros knew that British
penetration would destroy their
dominance. They also opposed
their religion, Christianity, which
some of the Aros were
converting to. Aro rulers saw the
new religion as a British method
of peacefully capturing Aro
territories. Aro raids and
invasions on many communities
were conducted in order to bully
those who favored the British.
But the Aro invasion of Obegu
around November 1901 signaled
for the direct invasion of
Arochukwu. 400 people died and
the government of Obegu was
destroyed. Obegu was a town
belonging to the rival Ngwa clan
which had been at war with the
Aros for many years and was
siding with the British
. After this
attack, the British would
retaliate.

OP, I think you need to change the title of your thread. It quite misleading.

I dont see anything wrong in this as long as it's a state project. Each state should be independent on it's economy, which also includes power generation. They can source it from wherever. Nobody gives a rat's as.s as long as there's uninterrupted supply of electricity for the power bills that's being paid.

Good move by Adamawa state.
