Patience and persistent is key in everything bro, not just freelancing.

Goodluck with your $1000 target o. But why don't you press yourself more?

Set the target for October ending. Then ask yourself, what do I need to do, read, or learn, who do I need to see to meet that target?

One of my favorite quotes which is also self authored is: fail fast, fail often, try again.

Goodluck bro, me self they target October ending for that 1k. I need a top rated badge in November cool
That's a better challenge tonyx44x. Let's do this.

Back then on Elance, identity verification was required. Else how would I have collected my monies in my domiciliary account here in Naija?
Thanks Stagger. May be I'd have gone really far if I was patient enough with elance when I joined in 2014.

That's good motivation here. Gradually, I'm approaching my first $1000. I believe it's possible to achieve before November ends. I'll keep the house informed.

Chyvy:
Yes. It certainly does, at least speaking from my own experience. You can market your status in your proposals. And like Stagger rightly noted, it's not by the number of projects, but by what I call "price per project". But the top rated status certainly helps to increase the price you charge per project. Ever since I earned that status, I charge between 4 and 10 dollar per 100 words, and my clients keep coming back for more. Unless you're more concerned about the volume of work, then it shouldn't matter.

BTW, congrats @Tony, I remember quite vividly my very first job. It was an $800 job. I was so elated I couldn't work for the next 2 months. cheesy
I definitely agree that the "Top Rated" badge will play a great role in submitting proposals. Again, if you don't mind, are you using your real Nigerian identity? I seem to progress slowly, so I just need to know.
BusinessRe: Elance.com, Upwork.com And Other Freelancing Site: How To Succeed Guide. by Exoticstan(m): 7:51pm On Sep 24, 2016
stagger:
From my own experience, NO. Again, you have to understand that MORE clients does not necessarily translate into MORE MONEY. For instance, there is a lady on Upwork who has worked for some of the big banks like JP Morgan who earns $200 an hour for doing financial modelling. She has worked less than 20 jobs on that site and the least she has made on a single project is $1,500. Technically speaking, she can make more money than someone who does 1,000 projects and earns $2 per 500 words.

Get my drift? So more projects does not necessarily mean more jobs.
Just as I thought. Thanks stagger. You definitely answered my question. But one last question: you use your real Nigerian identity right?
BusinessRe: Elance.com, Upwork.com And Other Freelancing Site: How To Succeed Guide. by Exoticstan(m): 1:22pm On Sep 24, 2016
stagger:
Bravo. Most of my own work is from repeat jobs: a 75% rate. Ensure you exceed your client's expectations and watch how repeat jobs will be flooding in. Congrats.
Bro, from your experience, does the "Top Rated" badge necessarily attract more clients? Especially as a Nigerian?

No. What will get you into trouble is consistently accessing your account with Naija IP address. Although they may ask you to verify your identity if you violate any of their policy; especially that of location if detected. I've withdrawn over $500 with nothing.... Even the SSN, I just put something there (though not advisable, instead get an EIN from IRS). Then you are good to go. However, it's good to use one's country.. It will save you a lot of headaches (Although I know using a non-native speaker flag can jeopardize your chances of getting high paying jobs in some niche. But it's a cross we have to bear sometimes.. Except you're smarter than the system). Good luck on your endeavors only Upwork.
Thanks man. I stuck with Nigeria and earned something already.

Hi Ladywriter, I signed up on Upwork with a USA address. Later on I got to learn about the tax form and stuff. Do you think I'll get into trouble if I request that their support team change it to Nigeria? What do you suggest I do?

I wish the emboldened were valid statements. If they were so, I would plunge my textbooks into a blackhole because English has already been brought to its knees by me.

Please endeavour to propagate the right information among candidates. Uniben post UMEquestions comprises, estimately, 50% English questions, 19% Mathematics, 15% each for the two other pertinent subjects and 1% history/current affairs. Therefore, blasting English doesn't guarantee success.

Shalom.
Mathematics is not for everyone. For the Life Sciences, Medicine, Dentistry et al, there is no affiliation whatsoever with mathematics. As for current affairs and history, it's way more than 1%; there were 5 of them (definitely more than 1%) out of 70 questions when I wrote in 2013. Beware where you stand Sir Geoffrey Chaucer or William Shakespeare, English language has embarrassed even maven brother. Dig into you books.
I speak as an insider.
Gracias!
EducationRe: 2016/2017 Uniben Admission Thread Guide. by Exoticstan(m): 8:11am On Jun 02, 2016
Dear Uniben aspirant, there are a lot of things you need to know concerning your admission this year if you want to make it at one try. Before I proceed, let me reveal some secrets of post UME to you:

1. Uniben post UME comprises of 70% English questions
2. If you blast English, you have passed the exam.
3. Only about 5 questions will feature from your other 3 JAMB subjects, and perhaps 2 to 5 current affair questions.

Interestingly, Uniben does NOT set new questions!!! The lecturers don't have that kind of time. They simply select English questions from some quality texts like Dandy English, Lexis and Structure and Round Up.

To save you the stress, I have compiled over 4000 questions and answers in English language (UNIBEN POST UME QUESTION RESERVOIR) which you can easily practice till the exam day. It includes ALL past questions and ALL the questions they will pick from.

The e-book will sell for #3000. That's right. Good things don't come cheap. However, due to the economic condition of the day, the first 10 people will get it for #1500. If you order now:

1. I will also include my special e-book UNIBEN ADMISSION SECRETS
2. I will assist you in your post UME application if you are unable to do it by yourself.
3. I will constantly update you on recent developments with regards to admission this session.
4. I will answer all your enquiries!

CareerRe: What Advice Would You Give Undergraduates About The Labour Market? by Exoticstan(op): 10:21am On May 07, 2016
ogawisdom:
It's difficult to get a job after graduation even if u make first class except u ve serious connections. Without connection an average graduate may spend 5 years in d labour market b4 securing a decent job. Things r even worst today BC d economy is depressed, we hear more of sacking than employing.

Think abt self employment n acquire relevant skills for survival cool while in school, stop building castles in the air. Expect d best but prepare for d worst tongue

U will feel like an incumbent president dt lost re election d day u will pass out of nysc n fg stops paying allowee welcoming u to labour market proper, God dey
Thanks! The ".. Incumbent president" stuff is hilarious, and worth quoting.

follymog:
Most undergraduate just want to go to school in the first place but it always dawned on most of them as the approach their finally days that they may have been dreaming about coming out and getting a first hand job. This is why the NYSC created the Skills Aquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED)

Even at that, I doubt if undergraduates still understand until they are told in camp that there are no jobs out there. In my own case I felt I had people who could help me with job so I didn't rely on what we were being told in camp. Although the SAED programme was yet to commence then but it was reiterated that corp members must create jobs rather than wait for one.

In reference to your question... Since we are not really thought in school on how to create a business or start something ourselves as a matter of fact our lecturers always tease us on being the future politicians and administrators because that was what we were taught.

1. It is imperative therefore that undergraduate are told the situation on ground, they themselves must see it. Thus, if there is anything you know how to do exceptional all you have to do is to look out and think of a way to generate an income with such skill or endowment.

2. Education is important but more so it's not always the sure way to success. It is expected that a graduate makes solid, rational and sound judgment as regard whatever the situation they may be facing. This is because when your grades fail you and you still can't get a job it always seem like why have I gone to school then? That is when you've got to make a solid decision on what to do with your life rather than while away time waiting for jobs.

3. Job skills are also what undergraduate need, most employer for instance want to know what you can do better than all other applicants. Undergraduate should get the required skills as students rather than wait till they are through. Most job this days require that you can use almost all Microsoft office applications. Interpersonal skills, empathy, decision, communication and judgmental abilities are often required on day to day job as no one is ready to hire a goofy.

4. Nysc still renders skills that graduate will still not subject themselves to even as undergraduates. An undergraduate may still be wondering why he or she should get trained for shoe making, tailoring, bead making and even karake. Fact is undergraduate want fast money and they often do not know that "our palms cannot fool us"... Whatever you already know, cannot be taken from you. Be handy!

5. Bottomline of all is most undergraduate are either nonchalant or ignorant about planing even myself at a point. With proper planning, undergraduate can focus their minds on what they want and what to settle for if they don't get what they want, this is because getting whatever can be frustrating.

I know of a lady who told me severally during my undergraduate days that she will not work for anyone but herself, It didn't seem I understood her then so I paid less attention to what she said until I saw what she has been able to do with her life recently. She owns a fashion brand making all sort of clothing for babies and grown ups. Now I remember she said so and she is doing good.

6. Looking up for intern jobs where little or nothing is paid are also good at least they serve as some sort of reference in your cv. In my case as a Corp member I embarked on a community development project (CDS), it was a good one and I happen to be one of the outstanding corp members in Oyo State. Guess what! We were promised employment but we didn't get any. However, I believe I had an edge with that because everyone who saw an extra certificate always ask what for and what did I do to get an extra NYSC certificate. It even answerd some questions employers ask already. CDS is another avenue fresh graduates can use to network themselves for their sake of Nysc.

Thank you Fola Moses! I will gladly quote the most salient part of your words in my book. Undergraduates are still largely unconscious about what't happenning out there.

If you can, share this thread. I need more opinions; up to one thousand. Our students must be saved.

Thanks once more for your concern.
