I'm feeling this. But not necessarily or only orphanages. Giving back to our world can be done in several ways. I believe investment in youths will prove even more meaningful. As a university student myself, I know what it will mean to coach new student freelancers. That's more than giving them money.

Yeah but how do you even prove the quality of work you're capable of doing if no one has given you a chance. I've been on Upwork since July and I haven't even got one job yet. Although I've received 2 invitations but I had to decline cos they were not my skill set. While I started getting jobs on truelancer almost immediately after I registered. I wish I know what I'm doing wrong on Upwork.

Please note, be it a consolation or something, that even the most successful of freelancers can at times be without jobs for one reason or another. This is most common when they niche down really well. In comparing Upwork to Truelancer, you need to understand that the latter has mostly Indian freelancers who are on par with Nigerians especially in written English. However, Upwork is poised to be a more "professional" platform. That's why things are tougher there.

I suggest you hunt for very little jobs, even if the pay is ridiculously low. For instance, had you done one or two $2 jobs since July, by now you should have a Job Success Score and some positive reviews which are common with small paying jobs. Use the search function to filter these peanut jobs. I'm hopeful you will find some stingy Indians who would want to take advantage of you.

There's one thing I've learnt about freelancing, and from top freelancers like Stagger. They will come for you whether you are from Nigeria or from Kuvukiland as long as you know your stuff really well. So using the US as your nationality merely gives you transient advantages.

Between September 25th and October 10th, I received 26 invitations to job of which I rejected about a dozen which I was either not interested in or didn't match my skills. Western clients will always come for you when you have a lot of 5 star reviews, 100% Job Success Score and rapid response rate. And yes, they even give bonuses too.

So keep a really appealing profile, do aneat job, and watch them come for you. Be successful!!!

I need someone who can research the musical activities of an Israeli Musical in the past 2 to 3 decades and present them in a Google spreadsheet. You state the year, what the music composer did and the venue. So I thought I might say this.
I started on upwork some few weeks ago, got my first job worth 25 dollars to review an audio book. I was excited like madt when I received my naira equivalent after transacting with an amazing lady on NL.
Two weeks later which is right now, I have in queue, jobs worth 500 dollars and I am anticipating more.
Dunno if it's luck (it's definitely not hard work cos I haven't tried hard enough) but I know that you are sure to make money on upwork especially if you are creative when applying for these jobs.
I know if I really settle down and get organised, I might be earning more than a thousand dollars monthly.
Bottom line is that there is much money to be made online.
Stop procrastinating or waiting for the perfect time and jump right at it.

I am still a very young freelancer on upwork with 3 completed projects (1st had a rating of 4.25, second had 5.0 third had 4.8 ). I am yet to get a job success score on my profile. With this antecedents, do you think I can make a JSS of at least 90? Can you also bear in your thoughts on how good/bad I am doing so far?
Also what can I do to ensure that I always that I get 5.0 rating ALWAYS. The 3 projects I have done I have really put in my all and clients always seem to be satisfied. But on seeing the rating, they seem to not want to give away that much important 5.0 feedback even after telling them that they should please give 5 as I am trying to build a credible profile.

Gurus please bear in your thoughts.

Most times it helps to ask for a 5 star review. I'd say you should give your all (as you are reportedly doing), up your game and ASK for it POLITELY.

I've seen your profile Kalu and it's quite cool. But you need to use capital letters efficiently. You obviously overused them, even in places where only initial caps would have sufficed.
Instead of this "Data Entry and web research specialist for your needs", you may simply type "Data Entry Specialist". Regarding the certifications; you may need to include stuffs (even if it means making them up) that have Global appeal. AN international certificate of participation commands more credibility than a certificate from Aba. You get the drill? This is only if you are comfortable with it.

@Exoticstan you've said it all. Let me add from experience. Since Upwork had long Upgraded their ways of ranking freelancers on JSS (Job Success Score) Rising Talent Badge and the almighty TOP RATED STATUS, newbies has been finding it difficult to get jobs. "I'll let one secret out". If you'd just open a new profile and within two weeks of bidding, you have not been awarded a RISING TALENT BADGE. My friend just know that your Upwork hustle will be as long as River Nile.

SO my advice for newbies:

1.Tailor your profile to focus on a service line, If you're into Academic writing let it be all about Academics (you can garnish related skills with it, but let it be at that).

2. Don't even bother, plying you trade on Upwork as a Entry Level freelancer (you'll be frustrated), so if you don't have the intermediate or expert skills just be patient to upgrade your skills further.

3. For RISING TALENT BADGE. I've discovered that after you've opened an Upwork profile, Upwork goes further to look at your service description, relevant qualifications and class. If your profile has got the bite, your proposal write-ups/composition would be observed for some period, should it be on point consistently, a rising talent should be smiling right on your profile within 1-2 weeks of account opening (this is just my observation, perhaps not objective).

With a good start biding on a Rising Talent Badge, you get to compete with veterans in your niche unlike placing a bid as just an ordinary Upworker. So aim for a Rising Talent Badge.

I tried viewingyour profile but the link won't open. Try answering some of these questions and see how far you go:
1. Are the skills on your profile related? Do you have skills from various categories?
2. Do you write your proposals with acceptable English?
3. Do you bid on jobs related to the skills you flaunt?
4. Do you read the proposals at all? (Some clients want you to start with a phrase or word to show you read the job description)
5. Is your profile complete? (The more stuffs you have there the better)
6. Is your information consistent? (Do you tell them you have 5 years experience in the proposal while your profile says 10 years?)
7. Do you attach samples while submitting proposals?
8. Are your proposed prices reasonable?
9. Do you use the same proposal to apply to all jobs?
10. Is your profile complete?


There are many technicalities to understand while submitting proposals especially as a newbie. However, what helps me get them to act, at least to interview me - which usually converts to a contract - is to make them test me if they doubt my aptitude. Of course, if you don't have enough job history, feed back, impressive Job Success Score and whatnot, they will doubt you.

Let's start from here.

You have to make the clients on Upwork see you as a professional. This means you shouldn't have unrelated jobs on your profile. So stick to the videos/web design, or switch completely to writing.

But if you asked me, I'd say you are probably going to be more successful where you are. Here are my reasons:
1. As a non-native English writer, you'd get less jobs compared to native English writers.
2. Expertise in the fields you've chosen; video and web design, have nothing to do with English language. Any freelancer can be awarded such projects.
3. Lastly, web design pays more, although writing jobs seem to be more abundant. Hope I helped.
