Conviction based on Dream

On a summer night in 1987, a Denver woman was out drinking with three men, and after saying goodnight and returning home, was severely beaten and raped in her apartment.

Her facial bones were broken and she lost sight in one eye.

The victim first told police it was too dark to identify her attacker, then said it was one of the three men.

'A day and a half later, she said it came to her in a dream that the assailant was her neighbor, Clarence Moses-El.'

Based on that, Moses-El, who said he was innocent, was convicted of rape and assault.

Decades later, a Denver judge overturned the convictions after serving 28 years of his 48-year prison sentence, Moses-El was released on bond.

Prosecutor said he could tell Ray his guilty just by looking at him.

Friday, April 3, 2016, 9:30am, Anthony Ray Hinton walked out of the Jefferson County Jail in Birmingham, Alabama as a free man after almost 30years.

“The sun does shine,” he said as he was embraced by family and friends.

One of the longest serving death row prisoners in history and among the longest serving condemned prisoners to be freed after presenting evidence of innocence, Mr. Hinton was the 152nd person exonerated from death row since 1983.

30 years ago, Mr. Hinton was arrested and charged with two capital murders based solely on the assertion that a revolver taken from his mother’s home was the gun used in both murders and in a third uncharged crime.

EJI attorneys engaged three of the nation’s top firearms examiners who testified in 2002 that the revolver could not be matched to crime evidence.

State prosecutors never questioned the new findings but nonetheless refused to re-examine the case or concede error.

After 12 more years of litigation, the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the lower courts, and a new trial was granted.

The judge finally dismissed the charges after prosecutors said that scientists at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences tested the evidence and confirmed that the crime bullets cannot be matched to the Hinton weapon.

Ronnie Long

A Black man was freed from a North Carolina prison on Thursday, 27th August, 2020 after serving 44 years for a crime he maintains he didn't commit.

Ronnie Long, wearing a dark three-piece suit, red tie and a hat, walked out of prison, wheeling his few belongings behind him.

He raised his hands to the crowd and threw his arms around a loved one before addressing reporters.

"It's been a long road," Long said. "But it's over with. It's over with now."

Wearing a mask that said "Free Ronnie Long," he credited his advocates and loved ones for persevering through the long legal battle.

Long, now 64, was accused of raping a White woman.

An all-White jury found him guilty of rape and burglary in 1976 and him sentenced to life in prison.

His conviction was vacated Thursday after the state of North Carolina filed a motion in federal court seeking to do so.

Richard Philips

A Michigan man who spent over 45 years in prison for a murder he did not commit received $1.5 million in compensation.

Richard Phillips, 73, was exonerated in 2018, which made him one of the longest-serving exoneree in the United States, after a co-defendant told the parole board in 2010 that Phillips had absolutely no role in the 1971 murder.

Under Michigan law, exonerees are entitled to $50,000 per year.

After his release, Phillips sold paintings he did while in prison to make ends meet.

Clinton Kanu spent 27 years in prison for a murder he did not commit in Nigeria.

His problems began when he tried to help solve a case involving theft and a dispute over family land.

When the man connected to the dispute died, someone accused Kanu of murdering him, even though he was more than 100km from the scene of the crime.

In 1992, he was arrested.

Kanu was sentenced to death by hanging or by firing squad.

In 2015, his case went to Nigeria's supreme court, which reviewed the scant details of the original trial.

It had been a skeletal case, only one witness, the brother of the complainant, claimed he saw Kanu at the scene of the crime, whereas two witnesses were called to testify that Kanu had not been there.

In April 2019, the supreme court ruled that there was no evidence against Kanu. He was discharged and acquitted.

"'Nearly 70 percent of the country's approximately 74,000 prison inmates are awaiting trial.'

Long had an alibi for the time of the assault.

His mother, who he lived with at the time, and the mother of his child said he was on a group phone call with them.

He was getting ready to attend a party in Charlotte at the time of the assault, they said.

The 4th Circuit opinion, led by Judge Stephanie D. Thacker, cited 'a troubling and striking pattern of deliberate police suppression of material evidence.'

Mr Ronnie Long walks out of the prison 44years later.

Long was put in a photo lineup as the only man wearing a leather jacket, which was allegedly what was worn on the night of the attack, according to court records.

At the time, detectives said they thought the suspected rapist might have been among defendants in court on other charges the same day.

Long (pictured in his mugshot photo) was a 20-year-old Black man living in Concord when he was accused of raping white woman Sarah Judson Bost, now 54, at knifepoint in her home in April 1976.

The DNA evidence in question was that hair samples and clothing fibers didn't match those of Long's.

According to news reports, the evidence was not shared with the defense at the time of the trial.

In 2015, it was revealed that 43 fingerprints taken from the scene 'excluded' the prisoner as the source of the prints.

A request for a new trial was still rejected by the Fourth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals the same year.

Long was in court for a trespassing case and Sarah Bost, the victim, said she recognized his voice

Despite decades of appeals to overturn the conviction, and though DNA evidence obtained throughout the years pointed to his innocence, he remained in jail.

Witness accounts and video show that the shootings took place in two stages:

The gunman first shot someone at a car lot, then jogged away, stumbled and fell in the street, and opened fire again as members of the crowd closed and attacked him.

Police apparently then let the young man walk past them with a rifle over his shoulder with his hands in the air after the shooting.

As for why the gunman was allowed to leave, Sheriff David Beth on Wednesday portrayed a chaotic, high-stress scene, with screaming, chanting, nonstop radio traffic and 'people running all over the place' - conditions that can cause 'tunnel vision' among law officers.

A 17-year-old has been arrested and charged over the shootings in Kenosha, Wisconsin that left two protesters dead and another injured in a possible vigilante attack during the third night of unrest in the city.

Kyle Rittenhouse was arrested on Wednesday afternoon in his hometown of Antioch, Illinois and charged with first degree intentional homicide.

Court records say the teenager 'fled the state of Wisconsin with the intent to avoid prosecution for that offense'.

Antioch is about 15 miles from Kenosha.

Two people were shot dead just before midnight on Tuesday, one in the head and one in the chest.

One of the slain men has since been identified as Anthony Huber.

A third man, a 36-year-old from West Allis, Wisconsin, was shot in the arm but his wounds were not believed to life-threatening.

The MD-160, also known as an Utka, (pictured shortly after it was built) is bigger than a 747 jet and was built as part of the Soviet WIG programme.

The top-secret Soviet military craft, which was bigger than a jumbo jet, was able to carry significant load over long distances at speed whilst keeping relatively low to the ground - around four metres (13 feet).

It was manned by a crew of 15 consisting of six officers and nine enlisted (cockpit pictured)

TravelRe: Rare Photos Of The 1980 Soviet Air/Seacraft Abandoned In The Capsian Sea by Explorers(op):
The vehicle was designed for sustained low flight over a level surface (usually over the sea without being detected by radar) by making use of 'ground effect' the aerodynamic interaction between the wings and the surface.

The cushion of air between the wings and the surface reduced drag allowing the WIG to carry significant payload over long distances at speed whilst keeping low to the ground.

This made a WIG equipped with missiles difficult for opposition forces to detect and thus posed a significant threat to any enemy warship

Six missile launchers were mounted in pairs on the dorsal surface of the Lun's fuselage with advanced tracking systems mounted within the plan's nose and tail.

The non-operational ground-effect vehicle, which was designed by Rostislav Evgenievich Alexeyev in 1975, used a cushion of air beneath its wings to speed above the sea's surface at 13ft making it difficult for enemy forces to detect.

It had been sitting unused at the naval base since it was retired in the late 1990s but it has now been beached amid plans to turn it into an ocean-side tourist attraction.
