The US bomber was on it was to England after landing at Keflavik Airport to refuel.

However, the weather conditions were poor in Iceland and the bomber was caught in a down-draught before crashing into the ice cap.

Fortunately, the plane landed on soft snow and kept sliding along its fuselage until coming to an abrupt stop at a snow bank.

One of the plane's wings was ripped off and the engines caught fire.

Some crew members were thrown into the snow through tears in the fuselage while those left on board managed to escape the plane before it caught ablaze.

The American servicemen had no idea where they were and could not send an SOS to the US Air Force base.

The crew decided to leave the glacier after two days of waiting for rescue and headed into a valley where they were helped by farmers in the area of Fljotshlio.

The US authorities later carried out two expeditions to the crash site by the end of that month.

The first made it to the plane wreck and managed to retrieve some items from it.

However, the second group had to turn back without reaching the site.

Over time, the glacier swallowed the plane, but it is now slowly coming back to view due to melting caused by global warming.

TravelU.S WWII Plane That Crashed In 1944 Emerges From Melting Glacier In Iceland(Pic) by Explorers(op):
A US WWII bomber has emerged from a melting glacier in Iceland 76 years after it crashed on it way to England.

The B-17 Flying Fortress bomber flew into the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in southern Iceland on September 16, 1944.

Miraculously all of its 10 crew members survived but the wreckage was abandoned and was covered and swallowed up by glacier.

Today, with global warming stripping the land of ice, the war plane has re-appeared, mangled and torn but still able to provide a fascinating glimpse into the past.

Locals examine the wreckage on the melted glacier in the south of Iceland.

You know what we are, Mr Explorers?

That's just what I think.
Is not even a must we have guns in our possession if the government can protect us.

One of the responsibilities of the government, protect lives and properties.

But now, there's no security anywhere.

Kidnappers, armed robbers, herdsmen will attack people on the road.

They will still come and attack them in their homes and nothing is happening.

We move on so easily as if killing, raping, kidnapping, robbery are norms and part of us.

Saw the thread of abakaliki lady that was hacked to death by fulani herdsmen. She's somebody's sister, daughter or wife/mother.

So sad, if you can't protect citizens, let them protect themselves.

TravelRe: CT Scanner Reconstructed Face Of Egyptian Boy Who Died Thousands Of Years Ago by Explorers(op):
WHAT IS A CT SCAN?

CT (Computerised Tomography) scan uses X-rays and a computer to create detailed images.

They are several single X-rays that create a 2-dimensional images of a 'slice' or section of the specimen/individual.

Although an X-ray creates a flat image, several can be combined to construct complex 3D images.

A CT scanner emits a series of narrow beams as it moves through an arc.

This is different from an X-ray machine, which sends just one radiation beam.

The CT scan produces a more detailed final picture than an X-ray image.

This data is transmitted to a computer, which builds up a 3-D cross-sectional picture of the part of the body and displays it on the screen.

CT scans are used to get an in-depth view of hard to reach places and are commonly used in human medicine.

They can be used to diagnose conditions to bones and internal organs as well as determining the size, location and shape of a tumour.

CT scans are also used to recreate images of extinct animals or to get in depth view of fragile archaeological remains.

At the Egyptian Museum Munich where the mummy resides, they were able to determine the boy's age at death after analyzing the bones and tooth inside the bandages, along with cause of death still wrapped in the coffin.

The team suspects he died pneumonia after spotting 'residues of condensed lung tissue' on the CT scan.

They were also able to create a digital image of the boy's skull using the CT scanner.

They were then fitted in the sockets of the 3D skull.

Mummy portraits were a common practice among some Egyptians during the Greco-Roman times, LiveScience reported.

The picture was placed over the embalmed face, a Roman tradition, while the rest of the body was wrapped in linen bandages that aligns with traditional ancient Egyptian burial ritual.

The study, published in PLOS ONE, notes that more than 1,000 mummies with portraits have been uncovered since they first discovered in 1887.

Pictured is the 3D image researchers created after scanning the boy's skull.

The portrait shows the young boy with curly hair that has been braided into two strands that run along the edge of his forehead and back behind the ears.

His eyes were brown and he had a long, thin nose and small mouth of full lips.

The painting also shows him wearing a necklace with a medallion.

TravelCT Scanner Reconstructed Face Of Egyptian Boy Who Died Thousands Of Years Ago by Explorers(op):
A 'mummy portrait' was found fixed on an ancient Egyptian casket that belonged to a young boy who died between 50 BC and 100 AD and researchers set out to see how accurate it is to his real face.

Using a CT scanner, the team uploaded a virtual construction of the child's skull, still inside the burial, to create a 3D digital reconstruction of his face.

The facial reconstruction image is fairly accurate to the original, but researchers note the painting makes the child look much older than his three or four-year-old self.

The boy was uncovered in the 1880s in a cemetery close to the pyramid of Hawara in Lower Egypt, near the Fayum region.

Pictured is the 'mummy portrait' that lays over the boy's embalmed face in the casket.

When King Tutankhamen’s tomb was found, it was reported that the following inscription was near the door:

"Death shall come on swift wings to him who disturbs the peace of the King.”

Curse inscription seen at the entrance of another tomb discovered:

‘All people who enter this tomb, make evil against this tomb and destroy it, may the crocodile be against them in water and snakes against them on land.

May the hippopotamus be against them on water and the scorpion against them on land.’

They mummifed their dead, preserved the bodies,
wrapped the bodies, performed rituals placed bodies in coffins, they sealed coffins and sealed the tombs from any sort of disturbance or tomb robbers/raiders.

Thousands of years later, some people broke the seals to these tombs, uncovered the coffins/sarcophagus, remove the mummies and place them in museums.

Anyway, i wish to visit Egypt someday and see these mummies with my eos 100d.

Some treasures of the Mummies

Mummies were buried with many different types of objects.

Amulets

Amulets were buried with the mummy usually in and around the mummy bandages.

These amulets would protect the mummy after death.

Eye of Horus

The eye of Horus (or 'wedjat eye') was a famous amulet which was used as a symbol of protection from evil.

Amulets were also used by Egyptians in their daily lives.

Shabtis

Shabtis were small statuettes usually in the form of a mummy and were placed inside the tomb of the deceased.

The Egyptians believed that these figures would come to life when called by the dead person and would serve him in his afterlife.

Jewellery and treasures

Mummies were often buried with many of their belongings that might be needed in the afterlife.

Egyptian Eye Make-up Pot

If the mummy belonged to a very rich person, such as the Pharaoh, he would be buried with objects made out of gold, for example jewellery.

A famous discovery was the tomb of Tutankhamun whose whole coffin was made out of gold.

Tutankhamun was discovered by Howard Carter in 1922.

Bead Necklace with Various Gemstones, gold rings, bracelets, armlet, gold coins, Amulets, Furniture, models of farmers, bakers, guards, maids/slaves, chariots, millers and pottery have all been found in burial sites.

All these were everyday items that the deceased would need to have a comfortable afterlife.

Guardians of the Internal Organs

Canopic Jars

The mummy’s internal organs were dried out and stored in canopic jars.

These jars were placed in a canopic chest in the burial chamber of the mummy.

There were four canopic jars and each had a different stopper or lid depicting:

Imsety : a person’s head guarded the liver

Qebhesneuf : a falcon watched over the intestines

Hapy : a baboon protected the lungs

Duamutef : a jackal looked after the stomach

These were the four sons of Horus.

Horus was the ancient Egyptian God of the sky and the protecter of the Pharaoh.

He was usually depicted as a falcon or a man with a falcon's head.

After the mummy was complete, priests performed a religious ceremony at the tomb.

It involved a ritual called “opening of the mouth,” where they touched parts of the mummy with a special tool to “open” parts of the body to enjoy the afterlife.

For example, according to Scientific American, Egyptians believed that when a priest touched the tool to a mummy’s mouth, the dead person would then be able to speak and eat in the afterlife.

Lastly, they placed the mummy in its coffin/sarcophagus and sealed the entrance to the burial chamber.

Sometimes, curses were placed at the entrances of kings tombs to protect them from tomb raiders or from being disturbed.

Wrap the Body

Finally, they coated the corpse in warm resin and wrapped it in the white fabric strips that have now become the staple of a classic Halloween costume.

Priests carefully wrapped each body part in multiple layers of linen strips, often placing a mask or drawing of the person’s face under the bandages.

Each mummy was wrapped in 100 yards of linen strips.

Restore the Body

The second half of the process involved restoring the shriveled body to make it appear more lifelike.

After the body was completely dry, the embalmers massaged the skin to make it supple.

They perfumed the body and stuffed padding under the skin to make it seem more fleshy and realistic.

Then, embalmers gave the mummies a bit of a makeover, applying blush and other paints, as well as false eyes.

Foreign AffairsRe: How The Ancient Egyptians Mummifed Their Dead For Afterlife In Steps (Graphic) by Explorers(op): 3:15pm On Sep 22, 2020
Dry the Body

The next step was essential, they thoroughly dried out the body.

To remove all the moisture, the embalmers used a chemical called natron, which is a naturally-derived salt with excellent drying properties, according to Scientific American.

They stuffed natron packets inside the body, covered it entirely in salt and left it to dry on an embalming table.

Then, 40 days later, embalmers would find a blackened and shriveled body ready for the next phase of mummification.
