Alleged Assault: Seun Kuti Appears In Court For Trial

Less than 24 hours after Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, was released from Police custody, he has appeared at the Magistrates Court, Yaba, on Wednesday, for the continuation of his trial over alleged assault on a Police officer.

Seun was in company of his wife as well as his lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN.

Eyes Of Lagos reports that the musician left Police facility in Panti on Tuesday night after fulfilling his bail terms.

His trial earlier slated for Tuesday was adjourned to Wednesday following the absence of Justice Adeola Olatubosun of the Chief Magistrates Court in Yaba, Lagos State.

According to Seun’s lawyers, the trial was adjourned as a result of the judge attending a training course.

Japa: 128,770 Nigerian students move to UK in seven years

In search of better education and quality of life, a total of 128,770 Nigerian students enrolled in universities in the United Kingdom between 2015 to the end of 2022, analysis of the data obtained from the Higher Education Statistics Agency of the UK has revealed.

The number of Nigerian students has continued to grow over the years, as Nigerians try to escape the horrors of bad governance, and the disruption of academic activities by tertiary-institutions-based unions such as the Academic Staff Union of Universities, and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, among others.

In the 2015/2016 academic year, statistics indicate that 16,100 Nigerians were enrolled in UK universities.

During the 2016/2017 session, there was a sharp decline as only 12,655 Nigerians were enrolled, with experts blaming the recession back home in Nigeria for the drop.




In 2017/2018, the number of enrolled Nigerians reduced to 10,685 while it rose marginally to 10,810 during the 2018/2019 academic session.

A total of 13,020 students were enrolled during the 2019/2020 academic session while 21,305 were enrolled during the 2020/2021 session representing a 64 per cent increase.

The latest data available by HESA revealed that 44,195 students were enrolled for the 2021/2022 session, the highest so far since Nigeria’s independence in 1960.

A breakdown of the HESA statistics shows that in the top 10 international students list, Nigeria ranked third behind China and India.

Eyes Of Lagos reports that foreign tertiary institutions and their respective countries have continued to benefit from the migration of Nigerian students to oversea institutions.

For instance, in 2021, Nigerian students and their dependants in the United Kingdom contributed an estimated £1.9bn to the economy of the UK, according to a report by SBM Intelligence.

An education activist and Programme Director, Reform Education Nigeria, Ayodamola Oluwatoyin, who had spoken to our correspondent earlier, listed poor government policies as one of the reasons Nigerians seek better opportunities abroad.

UK to ban Nigerian students, others from bringing family over

The United Kingdom is set to announce new restrictions that will most likely stop Nigerian students, other nationalities studying in the UK from bringing their families over.

According to an exclusive report by The Sun UK, this crack down will be annocued this week. Makesense Pm reports,


The crackdown will see all masters students and many other post grads banned from bringing family over.

However, the ban will not apply to PHD students, whose courses usually last between 3 and 5 years and are very highly skilled, the UK media House reported.


This follows the reports that net migration into the UK has skyrocketed to 1 million with Tory MPs asking the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, “to get a  grip on the rocketing numbers.”

To get a hold of the climbing numbers, UK ministers are said to be expected to announce the immigration clampdown on Tuesday or Wednesday.

The Sun reports that “Rishi Sunak is expected to come out fighting on immigration – pointing out they are figures he inherited as they date back to the year ending December 2022 – two months after he became PM.

“There has been an explosion in the number of people coming to Britain piggybacking on their relative’s student visa.

“Students brought 135,788 family members to Britain last year – nine times more than in 2019.

“Last year, 59,053 Nigerian students brought over 60,923 relatives.”

Davido announces new Netflix series

Award-winning Nigerian singer, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has announced a new series on global streaming giant, Netflix.

The docuseries, which is titled “David,” focuses on his life.

The singer made the announcement in a recent interview with Esquire Middle East.

He said the series will premiere on Netflix this December.

CBN to sanction banks backing unlicensed foreign firms

The Central Bank of Nigeria has said it will sanction banks assisting the operations of unlicensed foreign firms.

It stated on Monday in its ‘Guidelines for the regulation of representative offices of foreign banks in Nigeria’, signed by the Director, Financial Policy and Regulation Department, Muhammad Musa.

‘Any CBN regulated entity found to be assisting, supporting, harboring or facilitating the presence and/or operations of an unlicensed international financial institution in Nigeria shall be liable to severe sanctions including suspension or revocation of their banking licence,” it stated.

According to the guidelines, tepresentative offices of foreign banks served an important purpose of showcasing the brand and services of its parent company.

It could also stimulate foreign direct investment to the host country by connecting capital to various investment opportunities.

“It is in view of these that the Central Bank of Nigeria issues this guideline, to specify the requirements for the licensing and operations of approved representative offices of foreign banks in Nigeria,” it stated. Makesense pm gathered that,

Trader jailed for stealing patient’s phone in Abuja hospital

A trader, Uba Mohammed, has been sentenced to one-year imprisonment by a Karu Upper Area Court in Abuja for stealing a patient’s cell phone at the Asokoro Hospital.

Delivering his judgement, Ishaq Hassan did not give the convict the option of a fine but rather warned him to desist from committing crime.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the 62-year-old trader pleaded guilty to criminal trespass and theft and belonging to a gang of thieves.

The prosecution counsel, Olanrewaju Osho, told the court that the complainant, a security officer at the Asokoro District Hospital reported the matter at the Asokoro Police Station on March 15.

He said Mohammed was caught with a Tecno cell phone belonging to a patient who was on admission at the Asokoro hospital. Makesense pm reports,

During the police investigation, he said the convict confessed to the crime.

The counsel added that further investigations revealed that the convict is suspected to belong to a gang of thieves that specialise in stealing patients’ phones and withdrawing money from their accounts.

Gridlock: Lagos approves e-call up system for Lekki Port

The Lagos State Government has approved the deployment of an e-Call up system for the Deep Seaport, in Lekki-Epe Free Trade Zone of the state.

The measure, it was gathered is aimed at averting attendant severe gridlock often caused by articulated trucks accessing the port corridor.

The state Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, stated these at a Stakeholder’s Meeting at the weekend, which had in attendance top government functionaries from the Ministry of Transportation, representatives of Lekki Worldwide Investment Limited, Lagos Free Zone, Lekki Deep Sea Port and Messrs. Explaining the state government’s plan, based on the urgent need to implement a sustainable, effective and technology driven solution of truck movement in the Lekki-Epe corridor, Oladeinde, added that the application of e-call up system would help synchronize movement of trucks assessing the Lekki Deep Seaport and other industries within the corridor, starting from Eleko junction to Lekki Free Trade Zone.

He also shared the state and Federal Government plans on road network expansion and inter-modal transport systems at an initial meeting held with the Five Chairmen of Local Government Areas, LGAs, Local Council Development Areas, LCDAs, in Epe division, Lekki Worldwide Investment Limited, LWIL, representatives of Dangote Industries Limited, Nigeria Union Of Petroleum And Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, and the Nigeria Police Force, NPF.

According to Oladeinde, “an interim arrangement is also being put in place to decongest the roads through evacuation of all illegal tankers from the red zone by a joint Task Force of the State, LGAs/LACDAs, Security Agencies and Stakeholders.”

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, in his contribution, while analysing the challenges in Apapa and Tincan, stressed the need to prevent a similar occurrence in the Lekki-Epe axis, “hence, the urgent need to deploy a Truck Queuing Management System.”

Giwa, explained that the e-Call up system, “is an effective way to manage the movement of trucks from holding bays to the pre-gate, before entering the port premises.

“Six holding bays have been identified between Alaro City and other nearby towns in Epe and its environs which are currently under consideration for certification.”

Lagos kidnapper demanding N20m ransom shot dead, captives freed

A suspected kidnapper on Thursday lost his life during a gun duel with policemen in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

During the shootout, the policemen also rescued two abducted victims abandoned by the kidnappers at their hideouts in the area.

Eyes Of Lagos gathered that the deceased kidnapper and his gang members, during an operation on March 26, abducted some persons in the community.

Following the operation, the suspects reportedly contacted the victims’ families and demanded N20m ransom to release the abductees.

While negotiating with the suspects, it was learnt that the victims’ families informed the Lagos State Police Command and policemen were detailed to investigate the case and rescue the victims.

However, on the agreed day for the ransom payment, the kidnappers, upon seeing that policemen accompanied the families of the abducted victims to the agreed location, opened fire.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, while reacting to the incident, said the policemen fired back at the hoodlums, adding that during the exchange of gunfire, the policemen shot one of the suspects dead and rescued two victims.

Hundeyin said, “Yes, I can confirm the case. Two victims were rescued and one of the suspects was killed during a gun duel with the police.

“What happened was that the kidnappers abducted the victims since March 26 and demanded N20m ransom for their release and the victims’ families negotiated to N3m.

“So, the victims’ families informed the police and we commenced investigation immediately.

“On the agreed day on April 4, the kidnappers laid an ambush as they saw the police and the police countered the ambush and killed one of them, while the rest ran away. We rescued the two victims thereafter.”

The founder and General Overseer of Christ Mercyland Deliverance Ministry in Warri, Delta State, Prophet Jeremiah Fufeyin, has revealed why fire engulfed his church auditorium on Tuesday.

Fufeyin said the fire, which sent panic across the length and breadth of the expansive campground and destroyed properties, was nothing but the fiery anger of God. Makesense Tv reports,

Nigeria inflation rises to 21.91%

Nigeria inflation rate has risen to 21.91%, compared to January 2023 inflation rate which was 21.82%.

The percentage has increased by 0.09% points.

This was revealed in a recent Consumer Price Index report released on Wednesday by the National Bureau of Statistics. Makesense Media reports,

The rise in the inflation rate followed the naira crisis across the country and uncertainties relating to the just concluded presidential election.

The NBS said the rise in food inflation was caused by increase in prices of oil and fat, fish, meats, vegetable, yam and other tubers, bread and cereals, and other foods.

Lagos police arrest car snatcher, recover vehicles

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a car snatcher in the Ojodu-Berger area of the state and recovered two vehicles in his possession.

The 36-year-old suspect, Dayo Jimoh, was said to have hijacked two vehicles at gunpoint last Saturday along with two others who are currently at large.

The police made this known in a statement, on Tuesday, signed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin.

Hundeyin added that efforts are being made to arrest the fleeing suspects.

The statement read, “Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad have arrested one Dayo Jimoh ‘m’ aged 36 along Ojodu-Berger Road, Lagos after he and two others (still at large) hijacked two vehicles at gunpoint. Makesense media reports,

“Dayo was arrested at about 0230 hrs on Saturday, March 11, 2023, shortly after his gang snatched a 2003 Toyota Corolla with registration number BDG-946-GZ. The suspects arrived in a 2005 Toyota Camry with registration number KRD-958-HS which they earlier snatched at gunpoint at Oworo, while disguising as passengers.

“While investigation is ongoing, the owners of the vehicles, which were recovered, are hereby urged to come forward with proof of ownership to claim their vehicles.

“Meanwhile, Commander RRS, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi have charged his men to intensify efforts to arrest the two fleeing suspects.”

Two Beninese nationals arrested for abducting minor in Ogun

Two Beninese citizens have been apprehended at Idiroko border, Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The two, Kazeem Moye (25 years) and Kokuyi Moye (20 years), were arrested by operatives of the So-Safe Corps on Monday, at about 02:45am while trying to elope with an underage female abductee through the border.

The So-Safe Corps Commander, Soji Ganzallo, said that the Special Patrol team of the agency on routine patrol at the Idiroko border area had suspected the movement of the suspects.

“They were stopped and interrogated, but they both failed to provide convincing answers,” Ganzallo said. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

According to the Corps Commander, the female abductee, 16-year-old Okechukwu Felicia, a resident of Ajuwon Akute in Ifo Local Government Area, was also questioned, but she could not establish the true position of things.

Ganzallo stated that the corps discovered during preliminary investigation that the suspects had earlier been declared wanted for a similar offence at the Akute Ajuwon divisional police headquarters.

“The suspects were apprehended at Iyana-Ago trying to cross to the Republic of Benin.

“The suspects, the victim and a Bajaj motorcycle were handed over to the police at Ajuwon divisional headquarters for further investigation and likely prosecution,” it was stated.

Man in Germany cured of HIV according to new study

The man was studied for more than nine years following the 2013 transplant, and there is now "strong evidence" that he has been cured of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), according to research published on Monday in the journal Nature Medicine.

After getting HIV-resistant stem cells through a bone marrow transplant meant to treat leukaemia, an HIV-positive man in Germany was proclaimed to be HIV-free.

The University Hospital Düsseldorf team eliminated the patient's malignant cells and replaced them with donor cells lacking CCR5. CCR5 is the receptor that HIV particles use to infect cells to achieve HIV remission which is typically thought to be permanent. Makesense media reports

The patient stopped receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART), which keeps HIV levels under control in 2018 and has remained HIV-free ever since, according to the study.

The study, led by Düsseldorf University virologist Björn-Erik Jensen, said in a statement to Nature Medicine, "It shows it's not impossible — it's just very difficult to eradicate HIV from the body."

Although about five people have received this treatment and gotten cured, it might be a while before this is widely available.
