F00028: first, God's last prophet is our example and he never beat any of his wives at any time!
second, the verse in the Quran that supposedly gives that permission contains the word "idribuhunna". though it's almost universally translated as "beat them (lightly)" it also means to depart, separate, leave them etc. which is more consistent with the prophet's actions and sayings about matrimony.
