Atleast two persons have been killed as a cholera outbreak hit a facility where 'repentant' Boko Haram terrorists are being camped in Maiduguri, Borno State. Zuwaira Gambo, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development disclosed this on Saturday. Gambo said health personnel confirmed the death of two persons from the disease, Daily Trust reports. The commissioner debunked reports that several deaths were recorded, insisting that “only two persons died”. She described the figures being quoted on the matter were “unfounded,” adding, “I don’t know where this figure is coming from, but I can assure you that what we have was only two deaths.” She disclosed that officials from the state ministry of health had been deployed to the facility to fumigate the premises and quarantine those diagnosed with cholera for treatment. “Officials from the health ministry have moved in; everyone is on the ground to ensure that the situation is brought under control,” she said. Cholera is a bacterial disease causing severe diarrhoea and dehydration. It usually spreads in water and is fatal if not urgently treated. President Muhammadu Buhari in September 2015 established the Operation Safe Corridor to encourage 'repentant' Boko Haram terrorists to surrender and be rehabilitated. The programme commenced in 2016. Thousands of 'repentant' terrorists have graduated from the programme since 2015. https://saharareporters.com/2022/09/18/deaths-recorded-cholera-hits-camp-repentant-boko-haram-terrorists

By Joe Chukindi As schools set to resume on Tuesday, the Anambra State government says it has banned the wearing of short skirts by female students in schools. The state commissioner for education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, said the ban is for both public and private schools in the state. The commissioner, who met with education secretaries of public and mission schools at the weekend at the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), described such a mode of dressing as morally wrong. The Commissioner said, “A student should look smart, well-groomed, project positive vibes and not be indecently dressed for school.” She condemned the wearing of mini-length uniforms to schools, stating that it was morally wrong and unacceptable to the standards desired for children of the State. She said the acceptable length for uniforms in the State remained knee length and not above the knee as was fast becoming the fashion. The Commissioner charged the education secretaries to ensure schools would comply with the directives and salvage the future of the students of the State. She charged the participants to infuse the right morals and discipline in students so that they would grow to be of good behaviour and conduct. https://dailypost.ng/2022/09/18/anambra-abolishes-wearing-of-short-skirts-in-schools/

By Friday Olokor …Gov didn’t order killing, aide exonerates Uzodimma The Indigenous People of Biafra, Sunday, released gory videos and photographs of the attack on Orsu-Ihiteukwa community in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State by alleged members of the Ebubeagu security outfit. The organisation blamed the scenario on Governor Hope Uzodimma, accusing him of ordering the security team to carry out the incident which included attacks on buildings, killing of citizens, and burning of houses and shops. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the lawyer to the leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, made the allegation in a statement titled “Black Weekend In Orsu-Ihiteukwa, Orsu LGA of Imo State.” But Oguwike Nwachukwu, the Chief Press Secretary to Uzodinma, in an interview with The PUNCH exonerated him from the attacks. He said, “You know that people can allege anything against Governor Hope Uzodinma because it gives them joy doing so. If there was no salt in the food their wives served them, it was Governor Uzodimma that caused. “But to answer you directly, Governor Uzodinma has never, can never and will never give instruction to security operatives or anybody for that matter to kill innocent people. “Please, get in touch with security agencies because the concern you have raised borders on security. However, let me say that it is unfortunate that we often ignore the operational rule of engagement that exists within the security agencies, with their different hierarchies taking responsibility for their actions, but resort to mischievous finger-pointing at Governor Uzodimma. That is not fair.” Ejiofor, quoting “verifiable and credible eye witness accounts,” said the hitherto peaceful community “was this weekend, invaded by the combined team of Governor Hope Uzodinma’s Ebubeagu security outfit and the Nigerian Army.” He said, “It is heart-rending that at this period of economic downturn, the only available daily market in the community, where the downtrodden go for communal trade, in search of their daily bread was completely razed to the ground, and homes burnt by these evil monsters acting on behalf of the state government. “Indigenes of the community were thrown into this unexpected horror, and out of fear, they have fled from their very own ancestral homes. Right now, Orsu-Ihiteukwa is a ghost town. “We are asking the Governor of Imo State – could there be any justification, whatsoever, under any known law in Nigeria, as well as the international jurisprudence, that sanctioned this oppressive, barbaric, wicked, soulless and evil destruction of the lives and properties of his own people that he swore to protect? “Was it an engagement strategy, envisaged, permitted and consequently, sanctioned within the operational rules of engagement of the Nigerian security agents? The answer is capital no. “Furthermore, if the overzealous security agents are in hot chase of targeted criminal elements, can’t they profile and define their targets? Can this oppressive conduct occur in any other region or part of Nigeria? “Remember, Governor Uzodimma, that power is transient, it does not last forever! You must not also forget that you will definitely give account of your stewardship someday and one day, very certainly, before the International Criminal Court of Justice. https://punchng.com/tension-as-ebubeagu-men-sack-imo-community/

By Edward Nnachi The Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, through his Special Assistant on Media and Strategy, Chooks Okoh, said he was not aware of the disruption of the march by the supporters of the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the state on Saturday. He, however, added that the organisers did not pay the required fees to stage the march. The governor’s aide said, “The attention of the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State has been drawn to some online publications and rumours making the rounds that he ordered the disruption of a gathering in support of one of the presidential candidates in the 2023 elections. This is not true. “The Executive Governor of Ebonyi state is certainly not aware of any disruption of any gathering as he didn’t order any. “He is a democrat who believes firmly in the rule of law. He wishes every contending politician the very best and will insist on a level playing ground for all. If it is true that the police dispersed people, the answer will surely rest with the police. “For record purposes, the relevant government agencies had approved the use of Abakaliki Township Stadium for a rally by the Labour Party subject to the payment of some specified fees. Rather than pay the fees, it was gathered, the organisers chose to empty into the streets causing some untold hardships on the hapless citizens going about their daily pursuits. “The police, we are told, had to step in to restore law and order. The Governor appeals to all citizens to always abide by the dictates of the law and decent living so that law and order will always reign supreme. “He wishes all political parties and their candidates well and enjoins all to play the game by the rules.” Also, Ebonyi Police Command, on Saturday, said it acted base on the Rules of Engagement, reiterating that organisers of the rally did not pay the specific fees, as directed by the State Government. The Police Public Relations Officer, in the state, SP Chris Anyanwu, stated this in a statement, a copy of which was made in to The PUNCH. The statement read, “Several unfounded allegations of Police high-handedness have been renting the air with regards to the One-Million-Man-Rally organised by the Labour Party and other loyalists of the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign in Ebonyi State. “It is pertinent to put the records straight in spite of all false allegations and the Press release from the State Government. “Granted that the organisers of the rally had a brief meeting with the Police Command authority represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, it was expected that the group should abide by the outcome of the meeting and the requisite conditions given by the State Government which includes payment of a certain amount of money for the use of the Stadium as a take-off point as well as another refundable sum of money as a collateral in case of any damage to Government property/infrastructures. “It was, therefore, unfortunate when the Command got wind of the fact that the organisers of the rally failed to meet up with the obligations and threatened to go ahead and conduct the rally threatening that nobody, not even the State Government would stop them from going on, against the decision of the State’s Gubernatorial candidate for Labor Party, Dr Edward Nnwegu’s decision to stop the rally in order to avoid the looming catastrophe. “Armed with credible intelligence, the State Police Command sensing that if not checked, the rally will become turbulent and create a state of insecurity in the State, decided to nip it at the bud. “So in a bid to proactively curb the impending turbulence, police men were despatched to the newly proposed take-off venue, Pastorial Center for the purpose of maintaining law and order. “Unfortunately, while the Police men were properly deployed to ensure that there was no breakdown of the law, the radicals and mischief-makers among the rallyists became violent and started hauling missiles on the police operatives, uttering all manners of imprintable statements on the Police and the Government. Many of them even went physical to assault and attack the police men. “So in response, and guided by the Presidential pronouncements/order at the era of the unpopular END-SARS protests, the police personnel on duty rose to the occasion to dislodge the violent and criminally oriented attackers. “After taking control of the situation, the rally continued and ended up peacefully. This is even depicted in the video clips captured during the peaceful rally. “I, therefore, on behalf of CP Aliyu Garba psc(+), the Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State, state that the Police in Ebonyi State acted professionally and within the rules of engagement in order to ensure that peace and order prevails in Ebonyi State. https://punchng.com/why-police-disrupted-obi-supporters-rally-ebonyi-govt/

By Vincent Ujumadu Majority of them are Igbo who kill, harvest human organs for rituals, their objective being lucrative criminality —Soludo AFTER wrecking havoc in various communities in Anambra State for several months during which many people were kidnapped, killed and sometimes beheaded, many of the so-called unknown gunmen have, at last, become known. Many of them whose dreaded camps in the thick forests in the state have been raided and destroyed, have been running their mouths and narrating their escapades, signifying that they too are, after all, mere human beings. In a space of one year, no fewer than 30 persons, including security operatives, lost their lives through the activities of the unknown gunmen. Many police stations and operational security vehicles were also burnt by the gunmen during their operations. The situation was so bad that the November 2021 governorship election in Anambra State was threatened such that the electoral umpire, INEC, almost muted the idea of suspending the election. It was at the height of the unknown gunmen saga in the state that Dr. Chike Akunyili, the husband of the late Professor Dora Akunyili,, was killed. Akunyili was felled at Nkpor in Idemili by gunmen after attending a programme in Onitsha where he picked a posthumous award for his late wife. Other killings by the unknown gunmen were to follow, including those of the lawmaker representing Governor Chukwuma Soludo in the state House of Assembly, Dr. Okechukwu Okoye, a former member of the state House of Assembly, Hon Nelson Achukwu, a woman and her four children who were killed at UGA and an Onitsha based man, Sir Paulinus Mbanugo. When Governor Chukwuma Soludo assumed office, he could not settle down properly for work immediately because no day passed without stories of gunmen burning police stations and attacking local government headquarters, or killing people. Many communities had to inform their relations residing outside the state not to come home until the situation improves. Realizing that no meaningful achievement could be recorded under such a situation, Soludo swore to recover the state first before going into the execution of his promised programmes for the people. And so, the battle began. First, he revived the Anambra Vigilante Group and empowered them to be able to face the usually heavily armed gunmen. From all indications, results of the governor’s action are positively showing. Recently, eight persons suspected to be connected with the murder and beheading of the late Hon Okechukwu Okoye, the lawmaker representing Governor Soludo’s Aguata Constituency 11 and his aide, were arrested by security operatives. Few others have also been picked and they are assisting security operatives in locating the camps in the forests. In these forests, such items, including coffins, charms, dangerous drugs, women, cars of all makes and large sums of money were common features. Following the routing and smoking out of these gunmen from their camps in the forests, normalcy is gradually returning to the various communities. The routing started with the destruction of one of the most dreaded camps located in the thick forest along the bank of Oseakwa River bordering Ihiala and Ogwuaniocha in Ogbaru local government area where the supposed king of the gunmen, popularly known as Double Lion, held sway. On the day he and four of his members were killed, Double Lion didn’t see it coming as they were easily gunned down by their breakaway colleagues who have since repented and are now working for the state. It was gathered that they had to eliminate Double Lion and his gang because they jettisoned the original plan by extorting and harassing people during weddings, burials and other ceremonies. Double Lion, who hailed from Awoidemili in Orsu local government area of Imo State began his gun activities along the now abandoned Awka Etiti – Utuh- Ukpor- Orsumoghu- Lilu- Mbosi- Isekke axis, which used to be the connecting route between Anambra and other states of Imo, Abia, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states because of the traffic gridlock along the Onitsha-Owerri road. The armed gang also created a new operational camp in the Unubi bush, a town located in Nnewi South local government area of Anambra State. However, when the gunmen made that axis their haven and set up similar camps inside Orsumoghu and Lulu forests, motorists abandoned the route after many people had either been kidnapped or killed. Happenings on that road made Governor Chukwuma Soludo to impose curfew on the entire Anambra South senatorial zone and banned the use of motorcycles at certain times in the zone. The governor, who was seriously challenged by the gunmen, swore never to surrender the state to them, insisting that his administration must reclaim and make Anambra a livable state. In the words of the governor, majority of the unknown gunmen are Igbo. “Let us be very clear: These criminals causing mayhem in Anambra are Igbos (dominantly from other South East states) whose real objective is lucrative criminality and foisting their idolatrous religion on the region. Why is it that everywhere they gather and in every camp they operate, there is a deity/idol to which they routinely offer blood in sacrifice? Igbo are known for their enterprise but these criminals are bent on killing Ndigbo businesses. “The people of the South East, especially Anambra, are predominantly Christians. But with this gang, idolatry is back with vengeance. They forcefully try to convert people, especially the young ones to idolatry by initiating them into cults, swearing oaths to their deities, with the promise of invincibility. Consequently, these youths join them as members and informants. “Spilling of the blood of the innocent is considered an abomination by our culture and by our Christian religion. We understand that they kill and harvest human organs for rituals and human sacrifice in their so called camps. “With their new religion of idolatry and deadly weapons which they use to kill at random, they have tried to create a culture of fear and silence. More recently, the people have begun to question their propaganda, motive and means and they know that they have lost the sympathy of the people. That explains why they desperately tried to ignite a national inter-ethnic crisis by killing some innocent northerners who have lived peacefully in our state for decades to divert attention from their criminality and then seek to re-brand themselves as “defenders of the people.” They have failed, and would continue to fail.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/08/anambra-unknown-gunmen-now-known/

2023 Poll: Ohanaeze Warns Igbo Youths Against Attack On Tinubu, Other Non-Igbo Presidential Candidates, Says No Campaign Restriction In South-East. It said that the South-East constituency has sufficient political awareness to assess the presidential candidates as they visit the region to market their manifestoes and canvass for votes. The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has urged youths in the South East region to eschew ethnic chauvinism as the 2023 general elections draw nearer. It said that the South-East constituency has sufficient political awareness to assess the presidential candidates as they visit the region to market their manifestoes and canvass for votes. The Igbo apex body gave the advice in a statement issued on Friday through its spokesman, Dr Alex Ogbonnia, which was titled: "Ohanaeze charges Igbo youths to eschew ethnic chauvinism". Ohanaeze’s admonition came as a reaction to a statement issued by Igbo youths under the auspices of the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), Ogbonnia said. The group had in a statement published by some dailies, “warned groups and individuals promoting the presidential ambition of Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu to stay clear of the zone”. The group described as “unfortunate how certain persons from Igbo land would allow themselves to be used to promote the ambition of a man who is outdated in all ramifications in the scheme of things to be voted as a Nigerian president come 2023.” But reacting, Ohanaeze said though it acknowledges the inalienable rights of individuals and groups to express their views on national issues, it, however, advised that such rights should not infringe on the rights of other Nigerian citizens. The statement read in part, "Clarification is made that each of the presidential candidates has every right to campaign and canvass for votes in all parts of the country. In other words, since the presidential candidates of the South East or Igbo extraction enjoy untrammelled access and mass followership in other geopolitical zones of the country, it is political self-immolation and indeed highly unreflective for COSEYL to embark on a misstep that may diminish the Igbo patina for inter-ethnic friendliness. "Emphasis is further drawn that the statement by the COSEYL is at variance with the Igbo character of liberality, hospitality, frontier spirit and accommodation of diverse interests. The South-East constituency has sufficient political awareness or enlightenment to assess the presidential candidates as they visit the South East to market their manifestoes and canvass for votes. "As we celebrate the International Youth Day with the theme - generational solidarity; it is necessary that as leaders of tomorrow, instead of an archaic and implacable adherence to prosaic ethnic indulgences, it is much better to develop inter-ethnic solidarity with an encompassing national ideology into which the productive energies of the youths from diverse parts of the country will coalesce. This is the ideal. "For further clarifications, it is a subversion of the democratic process and indeed a potent source of national crises for candidates to perceive threats or hostility from groups within the country. While we share in the passion and grievances of the Igbo youth, maturity is still needed in our political activism to eschew ultra-ethnic chauvinism." Another faction of the group, in a separate statement, warned against what it described as campaign of calumny, inciting violence, and provocative threats from groups, youths and supporters of other presidential candidates against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential candidate, Tinubu. The group in a statement by its Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro on Friday maintained that there is no campaign restriction against any presidential candidate and other political office aspirants. "Ndigbo has an unrestricted culture of accommodation and warm receptions for neighbouring states and visitors from far and wide, as travellers, we welcome our visitors with open arms and politics will never change our ways of reasoning and reflections,” Isiguzoro stated. The group further stated, “Ndigbo appeals to the southeast youths and supporters of presidential candidates to eschew violence and shun attempts to take laws into their own hands by issuing empty threats or using health issues as an instrument of blackmail in the presidential campaigns against anyone. "We speaking in the background of threats of commotion and violence issued against Sen. Bola Tinubu, we are aware of the fact that Igbo youths have been shortchanged by the way Federal Government has empowered youths from other zones excluding the southeast youths, and it's an open secret that southeast has been at the receiving end of Federal Government's policies and programs since 2015, and we appeal for a truce and allow peace to reign. “2023 campaigns should be issues-based, not on blackmail and trivial matters. Ndigbo is open to receiving all Presidential candidates for 2023, we will receive all of them unrestricted, and interface with them and take decisions before the elections, we will weigh all options in the eyes of being sidelined for seven years by the Federal Government, presidential candidates should not be parochial with any zone or ignore any region during their campaigns.” https://saharareporters.com/articles/2023-poll-ohanaeze-warns-igbo-youths-against-attack-tinubu-other-non-igbo-presidential

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, had presented the governor to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), during a closed-door meeting at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja. He said, “We are here to see Mr. President to brief him and to get his approval of plans that we are having regarding our campaign outfit. “And once we have his approval, we intend to make major disclosure. We’re on the same page with the President and the individuals who will play various roles in the campaign. “The DG of the campaign is seated by my right here. Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State. “We have a spokesperson in the person of Festus Keyamo. The deputy spokesperson is Hannatu Musawa. This is what we came to discuss with the President.” Adamu explained that the choice of Lalong was based on his ability to do the work required to ensure victory for the Tinubu-Shettima ticket in the next year’s presidential election. Corroborating his position in a phone interview, Shittu said that the choice of Lalong and spokesman for the campaign council, Festus Keyamo, was not a move taken to appease the Christians, especially in the North. He said, “There is no point reading meanings or introduce religious undertone into the move. Lalong is a member of the party and a governor who is almost through with his tenure and he has agreed to accept the position. “Nevertheless, it is the duty of the candidate to appoint somebody he thinks is capable and can do the work.” According to the DG of the Asiwaju Tinubu-Shettima Coalition for Good Governance, Lalong is a sociable person, who is at peace with his people, regardless of religion or tribe. “Since he became governor of Plateau state, have you heard of any complaint by Muslims? That is because he has been very fair to everyone in the state. We should just thank God that our party is getting it right in all respects,” he said. When asked about the criteria for selecting candidates for such sensitive position, the ATSCGG director general explained that there is no formal approach to choosing the head or members of a presidential campaign council. Shittu further noted that the DG of any presidential campaign team will be required to provide logistics and other necessary details at three different locations in each state. “Choosing such candidate has to be the prerogative of the flagbearer and Northern governors. You also have to consider his competence. Keyamo, on the other hand, has certainly been through this before. “Any outgoing governor could have been chosen because the job of a campaign council head is formalise the party’s electioneering exercise in the sense of organising seat-by-seat arrangement in various states and other logistics. It will also be on a nationwide basis and providing the wherewithal to ensure that the campaign succeeds,” he stated. On why Oshiomhole, who was earlier touted for the position, was dropped, the former Minister of Communications disclosed that it is down to the decision of the flagbearer and his policy-making team. He said, “Everybody knows that for one to be the Director-General of a campaign council, there is an advantage in being a current governor. This is because of the encumbrance of finances, expenditures and security. If you pick someone who is not a governor, you have to start begging for money here and there. But a serving governor will readily provide the money needed. “The candidature of Lalong, certainly, pleases my heart with regard to the recent circumstances of our politicking as a nation.” https://punchng.com/lalong-not-chosen-to-pacify-christians-ex-minister/

Workers at the Paul University, Awka, Anambra State, have protested the non-payment of their two-year salaries. The protesters, who carried placards with various inscriptions such as, ‘Working without payment is unscriptural’, ‘starvation is the worst form of attack, pay your staff or shutdown’, ‘Primate have mercy on us’, said the debts ranged between 14 to 28 months. Their protest came just as the Primate, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba, inaugurated the Law faculty building of the institution on Saturday. Speaking on behalf of the protesters, the acting Head, Information and Communication Technology, Chidi Gabriel, said while the Adjunct staff were being owed 28 months, those on contracts and regular engagements were owed 24 and 14 months respectively. He lamented that it was unfortunate that an institution jointly owned by 55 dioceses would find it difficult to pay its workers. He, however, absolved the Archbishop of Niger Province, Rt Rev. Alexander Ibezim, who he said had cushioned their suffering through provisions of periodic bailout funds. He said, “We have been working these months without salary and they have been making promises without any fulfilment. Imagine what our families are passing through without salary? "There is a saying that a goat owned by the public dies faster. That is our experience in this school. Why not shut down the school if they cannot afford to pay?” In his reaction, the Primate assured them that he had waded into the matter, adding that their grievances were receiving attention. He said, “Your issues are receiving attention. I have stepped into the matter. The labourer deserves his wages. I stand with you and feel your pains. I and other Bishops, Senate and management will put heads together to ensure your matter receives attention. “I have directed that some money be released to attend to the issue. In due time you will hear from us.” The law building, named after the Archbishop of Niger Province was inaugurated by the Primate and Archbishop of Enugu Diocese, Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma and other bishops from various dioceses across the country. The Primate had also dedicated Renaissance Modern Polytechnic Mbaukwu and Millennium college of Nursing Sciences, Awka. https://punchng.com/anambra-varsity-workers-protest-two-year-non-payment-of-salaries/

By Ifeanyi Nwannah Ahmed Bakare, a public commentator in Zamfara State has lamented that both the federal and state governments have no reason not to address the insecurity that has been ravaging the state for over a decade. Speaking exclusively with DAILY POST in Gusau, Bakare said the fact that the bandits have continued roaring like wounded lions without silencing them indicates that the government is glorifying them. He claimed that some powerful individuals were behind the banditry activities for their selfish interests, insisting that the security agencies were not working towards unveiling the people behind the dastard acts. “From all indications, the bandits are not operating on their own but have strong backups that they consider to be sacred cows or untouchable. “They have selfish agenda and do not want peace to be restored in the state because of what they are realising from the nefarious activities. They enjoy the banditry more than peace” “And the government is very much aware of this fact but no action is being taken to address the issue, meaning that some individuals are more powerful than even the federal government” Bakare claimed that even the military and other security agencies do not want the banditry activities to be over in the state because of what they realize from the evil deal. He explained that the interest of these groups of people now supersede the interest of the common masses who are on the receiving end, pointing out that innocent citizens are being killed on daily basis and the government continues to make endless propaganda assuring citizens that banditry would soon come to an end in the state. He quoted former military president, retired Gen. Ibrahim Babangida as saying that no individual, no matter how powerful is more powerful than the government unless the government does not want to act. He recalled the comments by former Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha who said that if a crisis persists in a society for more than 24 hours, the government is interested in the crisis. “Thousands of innocent citizens have lost their lives to banditry, hundreds of women turned to widows, yet the government continued to pretend as if nothing is happening” Bakare noted that the Zamfara State government has an excuse in this regard states have no military, no state police or other security agencies but rely on the federal government. “When the state is not allowed to have its military, state police and security agencies, the insecurity situation will continue to bedevil so many states including Zamfara State” Recall that last year, Governor Matawalle swore with the holy Qur’an that he had no hand in the banditry activities in the state, challenging other prominent people of the state to come forward and do the same. DAILY POST can authoritatively report that since then, none of the influential persons in the state has come forward to swear with the holy Qur’an, making the residents believe that the elites are behind the persistent dastard acts in the state. https://dailypost.ng/2022/07/29/banditry-powerful-individuals-behind-insecurity-in-zamfara-bakare/

By John Owen Nwachukwu Hungary has said that Ukraine “cannot win” the war with Russia going by NATO’s current strategy. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban made his opinion known while speaking at a press conference in Vienna, Austria. Orban told journalists that Ukraine cannot defeat Russia and also warned of dire consequences for the European economy. “This war in this form cannot be won,” Orban said, speaking alongside Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer in Vienna, CNN reports. He said that NATO countries’ strategy of supporting Ukraine with weapons and training “has shown until now that it will not lead to success.” “Without changing the strategy, there is not going to be peace,” he said, warning that, without peace in Ukraine, all of the European Union will “be pushed into a war situation.” “It is not clear how we can avoid recession in the EU if the war carries on,” Orban added. https://www.google.com/amp/s/dailypost.ng/2022/07/28/war-youre-causing-more-trouble-ukraine-cant-win-against-russia-hungary-warns-nato/%3famp=1

The Edo State Police Command says it rescued three traditional worshippers kidnapped on Monday, July 25, 2022. It also said that one Favour Oyhou was arrested for allegedly killing her lover, identified as Paul Handsome. The Command's Deputy Public Relations Officer, ASP Jennifer Iwegbu, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday. Iwegbu said the murder suspect after stabbing her victim, fled to Auchi where she committed the crime. The statement partly read, “The Edo State Police Command in its renewed fight to stem the increasing rise in violent crimes in the state, especially kidnapping, on July 25, 2022, at about 1 pm, rescued three kidnapped traditional worshippers. “The Command, through its Divisional Headquarters at Ugo, received a complaint that armed men, suspected to be kidnappers accosted and whisked into the bush three traditional worshippers who had gone to a river along the Benin-Abraka Road for prayers. “Upon receipt of the information, the Divisional Police Officer, Ugo, immediately mobilised his team to the scene in hot pursuit of the hoodlums and possible rescue of the victims. The hoodlums sensing the policemen were on their trail, were forced to abandon their victims and fled into the bush. “The victims have since been reunited with their families, while intense bush combing is still ongoing to neutralise or arrest the hoodlums." On the murder suspect, the Deputy PPRO said, “Sequel to the incident of July 23, 2022, at about 7:30 pm in Auchi, Edo State, where one Paul Handsome (25 years) was reported to have been stabbed to death by his girlfriend, one Favour Oyhou, who went into hiding, the Commissioner of Police, CP Abutu Yaro, immediately ordered the Area Commander and Divisional Police Officer in charge of Auchi to smoke out the fleeing girl unhurt. “Following the credible intelligence gathering by men of the Command, the suspect was arrested in Benin on July 25, 2022, at about 10:45 pm. “Discreet investigation has commenced and the suspect is making useful information and will be charged to court soon." https://saharareporters.com/2022/07/26/nigerian-police-rescue-traditional-worshippers-kidnapped-while-praying-edo-river

By Dirisu Yakubu Kodilichukwu Okelekwe is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the South-East. Deeply connected with a history of a number of charity works, it wasn’t surprising to many of his admirers the ease with which he beat other contestants to emerge the party’s senatorial candidate for Anambra Central in the forthcoming 2023 polls. In this interview, Okelekwe gives reasons APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, would be elected President to succeed Muhammadu Buhari, his chances at the parliamentary elections, amongst sundry issues. What is your assessment of the APC presidential convention won by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu? Let me start by congratulating Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his doggedness, tenacity, never-say-die attitude. It is a victory richly deserved, so I send my warmest felicitations to him on the victory. Having said that, he should look at his chances in the main election. It is obvious that APC is the party to beat. You know why? We have a very good candidate in Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. You can love or hate him but one thing you can’t take away from him is that he is a leader and he’s gifted with the characteristics, the major traits required for good leadership. God has endowed him with those characteristics and what are those characteristics?: Determination, self-confidence, good judgment and foresight. I have no doubt in my mind that he will emerge victorious. Again, if you look at the political permutations, they are also in his favor apart from the fact that he is a very good, sellable and marketable candidate. Many Nigerians are still rooting for a President from the South-East but it appears you are okay with Tinubu… To be honest with you, I would have loved a person from South-East to emerge as APC presidential candidate. I was not a delegate. I can’t really say what happened. I am as surprised as you are but I wouldn’t want us to really dwell on that now. I want us to focus on the fact that we have a candidate. As south-easterners, how do we key in, because I can tell you that Asiwaju Tinubu is a President in waiting? Let’s focus on the solution on the future. How can the Igbo key in, how can the Igbo be part of the Tinubu presidency, what does it portend, what will be the place of the Igbo in his presidency? These are the things we should he talking about now. You have just described Tinubu as a President-in-waiting. Do you think he has a nationwide acceptance to win the 2023 poll? We must give huge credit to our northern governors whom I will like to call the heroes of the cult convention. By insisting on power shift to the South, they demonstrated their unflinching commitment to the unity and oneness of this country. That is a pointer to the acceptance of Tinubu to both northern and southern Nigerians. But there were protests by some northern groups who described the governors as traitors… No, no, no! That’s democracy in action. Democracy means minority will have their say and majority will have their way. You cannot have 100 per cent consensus in any society on any issue under the sun. Majority of northerners as represented by the governors are genuinely committed to power shift, but for them, Tinubu wouldn’t have emerged. That is a pointer to the acceptance of Tinubu to northern and southern Nigerians. Remember that the governors control the delegates. The fact that they spoke with one voice is a testament to their genuine commitment to the unity and oneness of this country. I commend them for that exemplary show of leadership and love for Nigeria. The South-East has not particularly warmed up to the APC. Do you expect the zone to benefit from a party they do not support? First, let me talk about the perception of APC as “Hausa party”. Well, now that there’s a southern person as the presidential candidate, is it right to still call it a Hausa party? I don’t think so. So, if I may, without conceding, assuming it used to be, right now with the emergence of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the presidential candidate, the APC has come of age. So, that perception of it as Hausa party is no longer there. It has now gravitated to a Nigerian party, a national party. On the issue of the Igbo benefiting from a party that they didn’t support, or may not want to support, you know, again, like I said, I would have loved to see a Nigerian President of Igbo extraction, no doubt about it. I am not making pretence about that, I’m a proud Igbo man. There’s no way you can be a proud Nigeria without first of all being proud of your heritage, of where you’re coming from. The question is, as Igbo, what do we do, how do we key in? The political situation of today, the emergence of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the standard flag bearer of APC calls for strategic thinking among the Igbo. Like I said, I had spoken about the inevitability of Tinubu’s presidency come 2023, as Igbo, we need to be strategic in our thinking. How can we be part of it? What do we really, as Igbo, want in Nigeria? Since getting a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction is no longer feasible in 2023, what can we do? How can we position ourselves to be part of birthing the Nigeria of our dreams, a Nigeria where justice, equity and fairness reign, a Nigeria where there is not glass ceiling on account of ethnicity, religion or tribe? We are talking about restructuring, going back to true federalism, having true federalism, not in name as we have at the moment but in practice so that each region or state can develop at their own pace. And who is best suited to genuinely restructure Nigeria into a true federation? There is no other person other than Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. If an Igbo man were to be President today, he won’t be able to restructure Nigeria. You know why? Because of suspicion, the fact that we fought Civil War and there is the agitation by the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB. So, every move of the Igbo President, no matter how well intentioned, will he viewed with utmost suspicion by other tribes in Nigeria. But a Yoruba man will be able to generate the needed and necessary cooperation of other tribes to restructure Nigeria and, if he does, there will be no suspicion of plotting to balkanize and breakaway from the country. So, I expect the Igbo, our elites to sit down with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and have an understanding that we will follow, so that, by the grace of God, when he becomes President in 2023, Nigeria will be restructured into a true federation, where one’s ability can determine how far he or she can go in life. Restructuring does not favor one section of the country against the other but a win-win for all sections. Restructuring means that each section will be looking inward and tapping into that God’s given potential to the fullest. But because we all depend on the federation, nobody is looking inward. It’s like you have a child. The best way to bring up your children, no matter how wealthy you are, is to train them to be independent so that even when you are not there, they can stand on their own anywhere. Your former governor, Peter Obi, is running for Presidency and here you are asking Ndigbo to sit down with Bola Tinubu to discuss their political future. You earlier said you would have preferred an Igbo man to be the presidential candidate. Isn’t this contradictory? There’s no contradiction whatsoever in my position. Peter Obi is a very good man, a great man, endowed with all the qualities that make for great leadership in public office. To become the President of this country, you need support from at least four regions, four geopolitical zones. You need to win 25 per cent of votes in two-thirds of the 36 states. So, it’s something we’ll have to look carefully look at and weigh our chances so that we don’t make the mistake we made in the past of putting all our eggs in one basket which is still hunting us till date. I believe that Peter Obi has given momentum to Labour Party, but momentum is one thing, voting on election day is quite another. I believe the Labour Party has a great future under Mr. Peter Obi, but what I cannot say is whether that great future is 2023 or 2027. You need time to prepare for the Presidency and Tinubu has been on this for a long time. He didn’t happen overnight. What is your motivation to represent your people of Anambra Central in the Senate come 2023? Mine will be a people-centric representation. It will he people-centred with emphasis on optimum results. I will do things differently. Those that were there before have done their best, I am here to talk about myself as I do not believe in campaigns of calumny. I believe in issue-based politics. Those who have been there have done their best, but you know where better is possible, you don’t look at good, where best is possible you don’t look at better. I know that basically the job of a lawmaker are three: Law making, representation and oversight. But there are other things. Attracting physical infrastructure is good but there is much more than that. Take for instance I am from Anambra central where our primary occupation is trading. As a Senator representing them, what can I do? What laws can I initiate to ensure that every obstacle to their trade is removed. These are intangible things you may not see but which are very important. It’s not like if you have attracted a road people can see the road but you can also initiate laws that can remove every obstacle to their business. Look at the current insecurity ravaging the whole of South-East particularly Anambra state. I must commend Governor Charles Soludo who is addressing the situation very well. I’m sure that if he sustains the momentum the way he’s going now, in the next three to six months, Anambra will be calm, there will be peace. So as a senator, it will be incumbent on me to work with the governor regardless of party differences to ensure that there is security because if there is no security, my people cannot trade because trading is their primary occupation. What are your chances in this election against people like Uche Ekwunife from PDP, Victor Umeh from LP and Dozie Nwankwo from APGA? My chances are very bright. I believe in the primacy of God in the affairs of men. I believe that if God will a thing, he will bring it to pass. God has done greater things in my life. Seeing me through this quest cannot be bigger that what he has done in the past. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/07/tinubu-will-be-president-igbo-will-succeed-him-if-okelekwe/

A traditionalist, the Obalesu Obatala Agbaye, Olaolu Dada, has said that a pan-Yoruba group, “Irorun Ile Kaaro-oo-jiire” will explore its spiritual powers to provide adequate security of lives and property of Nigerians. Dada stated this at a news conference at Obatala temple in Igbotapa area of Ile-Ife on Saturday. He expressed concerned over what he called rising insecurity in the country, adding that no day could pass without reports of kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery and other forms of insecurity. “Enough is enough. It is high time we moved to address this security challenge bedeviling our country. “Let me assure that the powers used by our forefathers still remain with us and we are ready to use them to deliver ourselves and our people in Nigeria,” he said. Dada said that the group would collaborate with other security agencies to tackle the lingering security challenge in the country. He, however, stated that the group had nothing to do with politics or Yoruba nation agitation, but was determined to rise up and fight criminality in the country ‘without the use of gun and cutlasses’. Also speaking, the group’s Traditional Secretary, Mr Dotun Hassan, said that “Irorun Ile Kaaro-oo-jiire” stood for unity, peace and tranquility of Christians, Muslims and traditionalists. Hassan, a legal practitioner, said that the group would promote the culture and tradition of the Yoruba and ensure the stability of the nation’s democracy. He called for the support of the Federal Government, South-West governors, royal fathers, philanthropists, traditionalists and other stakeholders for the group to achieve its objectives. The group’s Director of Protocol, Dr Adebayo Olusegun, also said that the organisation would use spiritual powers to secure the lives and property of the people of Yoruba land and the entire country. “We will use the spiritual powers to stop crime in Nigeria, because we cannot continue to condone criminality anymore,” he said. Others, who spoke at the occasion, included the group’s Director, Research and Documentary, Dr Segun Awogbemi and the Deputy Press Secretary, Adunni Lawal. They expressed the group’s commitment to rescuing the country from the pangs of insecurity. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/07/well-use-spiritual-powers-to-provide-security-for-nigerians-traditionalists-2/

By Seun Opejobi Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of Labour Party, LP, has revealed the number of Nigerians that make up his political structure. Obi disclosed that his political structure is made up of 100 million Nigerians living in poverty. The LP presidential candidate disclosed this after his meeting with Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State. According to the former Anambra State governor, all underprivileged Nigerians were his supporters. “I have said it before when people talk about structure, that my structure [is] the 100 million Nigerians living in poverty. “Those people who are finding it difficult to live. Nigerians are here today spending over 100% of their money on feeding, that is my structure. And above all, the most important structure is the Almighty God,” Obi said. Some political stakeholders and commentators have accused Obi of lacking real-life political structure. Commentators like Reno Omokri and Deji Adeyanju said Obi’s followers are only on social media and not in real-life. They noted that Obi’s lack of grassroot supporters would be his greatest undoing during the 2023 presidential election. https://dailypost.ng/2022/07/22/2023-presidency-100m-poor-nigerians-make-up-my-political-structure-peter-obi/

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has reacted to the controversy surrounding the choice of his running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa, and why he did not choose the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike. The PUNCH reports that Atiku had after announcing Okowa as his running mate clarified that he picked the Delta governor because he (Okowa) had the qualities to be a President, adding that he “is a President-in-waiting.” He said, “In arriving at the decision, I held wide consultations with various stakeholders in our party including our governors, the national working committee, board of trustees, and other leaders to seek their inputs and their wisdom.” “In these consultations, I made clear that my running mate would have the potential to succeed me at a moment’s notice, that is, a president-in-waiting. “In other words, the person must have the qualities to be President. The person must have an appreciation of the deep rot which our country has been put into by the rudderless All Progressives Congress government; understands the great suffering that most of our people are going through and the urgency of relieving them of that suffering; understands the critical importance of economic growth and development to provide our young people with jobs, hope, and a pathway to wealth.” Meanwhile, the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, had on June 29, 2022, during an interview on Arise TV, said Wike, and others who backed the Rivers governor for the PDP vice-presidential ticket slot deserved a detailed explanation from the party’s presidential candidate on his choice of running mate. This was as he also said he had resorted to fast and prayers to seek God’s direction after the emergence of Okowa as the running mate to Atiku ahead of Wike. Ortom said it was surprising that Atiku could jettison the recommendation of 14 out of 17 members of the committee that recommended Wike as his running mate. Ortom said, “I am waiting for him (Atiku) because there are more things he is expected to do. I expected him to reach out to Wike who came second and he denied him the popular view of PDP members. 14 out of 17 members say that Wike should be the VP but in his wisdom, he chose Governor Okowa. Governor Okowa is a nice man and my friend and I have no problem with him. But if we are in a democratic era, and 14 people out of 17 said that it should be Wike, and he (Atiku) in his wisdom gave it to Okowa, I expect more explanation, I expect him to talk to Wike first, I expect him to even reach out to some of us so that together we can work as a party. “But the bottom line for me is that I have gone into hibernation and I am praying and at the end, whatever God directs me, I can assure you that I will do it.” But speaking in an exclusive interview with Arise TV which was aired Friday morning, Atiku said he chose who he felt could deliver among the nominees that were presented to him. He added that Wike was not rejected and that he only picked who could deliver. Atiku said, “I didn’t reject Wike, I picked who can deliver. Wike is brilliant and tenacious. Going by history, I picked an Igbo as running mate in 2007, in 2019. I still picked an Igbo as running mate for 2023. “The committee that presented the three nominees was chaired by the Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom. They recommended three people, so I picked one. People should be fair to me and state the facts.” https://punchng.com/i-picked-who-can-deliver-over-wike-atiku/?amp
