CrimeTeacher Abducted With Kaduna Schoolchildren Died In Captivity – Gov by Fareke(op): 10:12pm On Mar 24, 2024
By Godwin Isenyo

A teacher who was abducted alongside the Kuriga schoolchildren in the Chikun Local Area of Kaduna State died while in captivity.

The state governor, Senator Uba Sani, who disclosed this on Channels Television’s Sunday’s Politics programme, said all the schoolchildren abducted by the terrorists were rescued by the military in collaboration with local authorities from neighbouring Zamfara State.

The abducted Kuriga schoolchildren were taken from the Government Secondary and Primary Schools, Kuriga 1, Chikun LGA of the state, on March 7, 2024 and spent 17 days in captivity.

Sani, however, noted with regret that the teacher could not make it alive following health complications while in captivity.

"It’s only one person that has not returned, and that is the teacher. That is the fact of the matter, but all of the 137 children are safely back.

“We had the unfortunate incident that the teacher couldn’t make it because he had some complications; he was sick — that was the report we got from the military and the security agencies but the rest of the children, all of them are back with us,” he said.

Meanwhile, PUNCH Online learnt that the rescued 137 schoolchildren had arrived in the state capital and were being kept in an undisclosed medical facility in the state.

CrimeMassacre In Niger State: 30 Bodies Recovered, 50 Houses Burnt by Fareke(op): 7:12am On Mar 23, 2024
By Priscilla Denni

Thirty corpses have been recovered, and about 50 houses reportedly burned down following an attack on Madaka village by gunmen.

The attack, which occurred on Thursday, resulted in an unspecified number of casualties, including the Village Head, Saleh Ahmad Kakuri, the Commander of the vigilante, and his Deputy, under the Madaka District of Rafi local government area of the state.

The bandits also targeted Majanjan District in the same local government on the same day. During this attack, Alhaji Salihu Immahuri, the Maianguwan (Village Head) of Anguwan Bala, and his two wives were also killed.

A traditional ruler from the area confirmed the incidents, saying that the bandits operated for several hours without any response from security agencies.

He said, “The bandits invaded the village around 3:30pm on Thursday. Over 30 bodies have already been recovered by the villagers. They operated for several hours without response from security agencies.”

According to him, the attacks resulted in significant casualties due to the timing, which coincided with the peak of trading in the market.

Another source from the village said over 50 houses, including commercial shops, were burnt down during the assault.

“Over 50 houses including commercial shops, a number of cars and motorcycles were burnt down during the attack.

“The suspected armed men stormed the village shooting sporadically, killed several people and burnt down the market.

"They also abducted an unspecified number of the villagers to an unknown destination. For now, we cannot say the exact number of people killed or abducted.” The source stated.

This incident recalls a similar attack that occurred in the same village a few years ago, resulting in significant loss of life.

As of now, the Niger State government has not issued a statement over the reported attack.

PoliticsNigerian Soldier Deployed To South-east Challenges IPOB Armed Wing To 'come Out by Fareke(op): 5:42am On Mar 23, 2024
The army personnel, who was deployed with his colleague to a community in the South-East region, was spotted shooting intermittently to summon IPOB armed operatives to come and engage in a gun battle with them.

A Nigerian soldier armed with heavy weapons has been seen in a viral video challenging the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) armed operatives to dare the army and come out to fight.

The army personnel, who was deployed with his colleague to a community in the South-East region, was spotted shooting intermittently to summon IPOB armed operatives to come and engage in a gun battle with them.

“IPOB make una come make we fight, una no gree, you think say nah play we come to play bah, come out if you fit, thunder fire your father,” the soldier said in the video.

The video surfaced online amid controversies surrounding the killing of a Commanding Officer, two Majors, one Captain and 12 soldiers of 181 Amphibious Battalion by hoodlums in Delta State.

A resident of the Okuama community, however, alleged in another viral video that the 16 soldiers who were killed in the community did not come for peacekeeping as claimed by the army.

The resident who appeared to be in his mid-20s claimed that the deceased soldiers were on the mission to protect the interest of the Niger Delta warlord, popularly known as Tompolo.

The resident said: “Okuama and Okoloba have land issues but Ijaw people whom the federal government have given power to go after bunkery are using the Army to guide their products to the point of sales. They used the Army to pick people from Okuama community.

"The three people taken were slaughtered, and now they are coming back to pick community leaders and you know that once community leaders are captured; the youths are powerless.

“Those soldiers were not in Okuama for peacekeeping, they were fighting in favour of Tompolo who ordered them to do so.”

Foreign AffairsNiger Republic Suspends Military Cooperation With U.S. ‘with Immediate Effect’ by Fareke(op): 5:41am On Mar 18, 2024
The pact allowed US military personnel and civilian defence staff to operate from Niger, which plays a central role in the US military’s operations in Africa’s Sahel region and is home to a major airbase.

Niger has suspended its military agreement with the United States “with immediate effect”, according to the ruling military spokesman Colonel Amadou Abdramane, in a blow to US security interests in the region.

The pact allowed US military personnel and civilian defence staff to operate from Niger, which plays a central role in the US military’s operations in Africa’s Sahel region and is home to a major airbase.

The decision, announced on Saturday, came after senior US officials – led by Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Molly Phee and US Africa Command head General Michael Langley – visited the West African country earlier this week to discuss democratic transition.

Speaking on local television, Abdramane said the US delegation did not follow diplomatic protocol, and that Niger was not informed about the composition of the delegation, the date of its arrival or the agenda, Al Jazeera reports with new agencies.

“Niger regrets the intention of the American delegation to deny the sovereign Nigerien people the right to choose their partners and types of partnerships capable of truly helping them fight against terrorism,” Abdramane said.

The US military had some 650 personnel working in Niger in December, according to a White House report to Congress.

The US military operates a major airbase in the Niger city of Agadez, some 920km (572 miles) from the capital of Niamey, using it for manned and unmanned surveillance flights and other operations.

A drone base known as Air Base 201 near Agadez was built at a cost of more than $100m. Since 2018 the base has been used to target ISIL (ISIS) fighters and Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen (JNIM), an al-Qaeda affiliate, in the Sahel region.

Reporting from Washington, DC, Al Jazeera correspondent Shihab Rattansi said the move is “a huge blow to the US”.

“Niger is the centre of US operations in west and north Africa, notably at its Air Base 201, the most expensive construction project ever undertaken by the US government. It’s there for war on terror operations but it’s really there also for great power projection against countries like Russia and China.”

Last October, Washington officially designated the military takeover as a coup. But in December, the top US envoy for Africa, Phee, said the US was willing to restore aid and security ties if Niger met certain conditions.

The military said the delegation had accused Niger of partnering with Russia and Iran on “secret” deals, which the government denies. Officials also said the US had “threatened” action against Niger if the Niamey fails to cut ties with both countries.

The military government “forcefully denounces the condescending attitude accompanied by the threat of retaliation from the head of the American delegation towards the Nigerien government and people”, spokesman Abdramane added.

A US official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to the Reuters news agency, said the officials had “frank discussions” in Niamey earlier this week about the trajectory of Niger’s ruling military council – known by its French initials CNSP.

"We are in touch with the CNSP and will provide further updates as warranted,” the official added.

Niger has been under military rule since July 2023 when an elite guard force led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani detained President Mohamed Bazoum and declared Tchiani ruler.

Like the military rulers in neighbouring Mali and Burkina Faso, Niger has also kicked out French and other European forces. Both Mali and Burkina Faso have turned to Russia for support.

HealthDriver Slumps, Dies While Taking Students To Unilorin Campus by Fareke(op): 6:35pm On Mar 16, 2024
By Mumini Abdulkareem

A commercial bus driver simply identified as Lukman slumped and lost his life while conveying some students to the the University of Ilọrin campus.

It was gathered that the tragic incident which occurred on Friday left occupants of the vehicle in shock.

A passenger who witnessed the incident narrated that he took control of the bus in motion to save other students and avert further disaster.

He said, “Our bus driver just died on the road while driving us from Sanrab to Unilorin. I was sitting in the front but I wasn’t looking up because I was reading the Qur’an on my phone.

"The other person beside me just called my attention shouting Baba multiple times. By the time I looked up, he was already gasping and the bus was drifting away from the road. I had to press the brake, take control and bring it to a halt.

“We tried to revive him, took him down, fanned him and poured water on his face but he wasn’t responding. Some medical students checked his pulse and said it was becoming faint. His colleague brought a bus and he was on my lap on the way to the school clinic.

"The DVC who also met us followed with his car. It was so emotional and I just had to control myself. The other lady that followed us to the hospital was crying. But we were told he was brought in dead at the clinic. Everything happened within 30 minutes

“I have always heard and seen videos of people dying in unexpected situations but never witnessed any. Everyone should always be conscious that death will come to everyone and nobody knows when our time will be. We should always be conscious of this and engage in good deeds at all times.”

One of the deceased’s colleagues, Sulyman Malik, who also confirmed the incident during a telephone chat with Daily Trust, explained that the driver sympathised with him on Thursday about a recent accident.

“From what we gathered, he just finished crossing the last of the four bumps at veterinary junction after the school gate, going to the the park when he slumped.

“This just shows that this life is vanity. He has since been buried according to Islamic rites. He was a very handsome man and you would not think of his death even in the next 30 years”.

Director of Information, University of Ilorin, Mr Kunle Akogun, described the incident as very unfortunate and a reminder of the vanity of life.

CrimeSchool Attacks: Bandits Demand N1bn For 287 Pupils, Issue March 27 Deadline by Fareke(op):
Kidnappers called on Tuesday, gave us 20 days to raise ransom, says community leader

• Hostages held in difficult location, used as human shield to prevent bombardment – DHQ

The gunmen, who kidnapped 287 students and teachers from the LEA Primary School and the Government Secondary School, Kuriga, Kaduna State last week have demanded N1bn for their release.

The hoodlums, who made the demand also gave a deadline that would elapse on March 27, 2024, for the payment of the ransom.

Reuters reported on Wednesday that the bandits contacted a spokesman for the families of the hostages on Tuesday and demanded the ransom.

On March 7, 2024, the schoolchildren were abducted by the hoodlums who took them into the forest.

Reuters reported that a community leader, Jubril Aminu, who acted as a spokesman for the families of the hostages, said he received a call on his phone from the kidnappers on Tuesday.

Aminu stated, “They made a total of N1bn ransom demand for all the pupils, students, and staff of the school.

“They gave an ultimatum to pay the ransom within 20 days, effective from the date of the kidnap (March 7). They said they would kill all the students and the staff if the ransom demand is not met.”

According to Reuters, a councillor representing Kuriga Ward in the Chikun Local Gornment, Idris Ibrahim, confirmed the ransom demand.

"Yes, the kidnappers called the community through Jubril Aminu’s number and made the demand,” he said.

“They called from a hidden number but the authorities are working on getting the number,” Ibrahim told Reuters.

He added that the security forces were taking “adequate measures” to secure the release of the students.

But a source in the Kuriga community told one of our correspondents that there was heightened tension in the area following the demand of the bandits.

"After the disclosure by a community leader, Jibril Aminu, to the Kuriga people, there has been a lot of tension in Kuriga, particularly among the parents of abducted students of that particular community. They are in a state of trauma. They need oxygen to survive, that is the stage we can describe how they are.

“Saying that the kidnappers need N1bn, honestly speaking, it is a huge amount of money and the community does not have the money to pay. One of the parents (a woman) of the abducted students is terribly sick because her main concern is her daughter who left the house without breakfast.

"There is an apprehension among Kuriga people. They said the government has abandoned them.’’

The source further stated that there was also the concern about “who kidnapped these students. It is now established that ISWAP is behind the abduction of Kuriga students and teachers. Some said that those people who abducted the train passengers are responsible for this issue.

“Honestly, there is a conspiracy of silence regarding these abducted Kuriga students. Nobody, even the politicians are not talking about the abducted school children.”

Councillor speaks

The Councillor representing Kuriga Ward, Ibrahim, said the community could not afford N1bn ransom

Idris, who disclosed this to The PUNCH on Thursday in Kaduna, said the residents were already struggling with the hard economy to feed their families before the terrorists struck.

He stated, “ We only make our appeal to the Kaduna State Government and they’ve not promised us whether they are going to pay the ransom or not. The terrorists have not yet called since they made their demand of N1bn ransom.”

He lamented that since the incident occurred, parents and their families had been having sleepless nights.

Idiris stated, “ There is tension and fear already in the community as most villagers are evacuating their families to neighboring villages.”

He added that most of the members of the community were predominantly farmers, adding the sad incident would pose a serious challenge as the rainy season draws near.

He appealed to the Kaduna State Government and military to deploy soldiers in the community so that people could regain their confidence.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Kaduna State Governor, Muhammad Lawal Shehu, said the Kaduna State Governor , Uba Sani, was committed to rescuing the children.

He stated, “He (the governor) had a meeting with the National Security Adviser regarding the Kuriga community.’’

The CPS appealed to the media not jeopardize the ongoing effort toward rescuing the kidnapped victims.

Attempts to get the Kaduna State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Hassan Mansir, to get an update on the efforts to rescue the abductees did not succeed as he did not pick call to his mobile telephone nor respond to a text sent to the line.

The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, had told reporters on Wednesday that President Bola Tinubu’s position on the kidnappings in Kuriga was that security forces should secure the hostages’ release without any payment to the kidnappers.

“The President has directed that security agencies must as a matter of urgency ensure that these children and all those who have been kidnapped are brought back to safety and also in the process ensure that not a dime is paid for ransom.”

493 in captivity

The recent kidnappings in the North have led to the captivity of about 493 children and adults in Kaduna, Borno and Sokoto states.

On March 4, 2024, about 200 women were reportedly abducted by Boko Haram terrorists from the internally displaced persons camp at Gamboru-Ngala in Borno State.

Although the United Nations put the figure at about 200 females, residents said the missing women were about 102. The women were reportedly abducted when they went out of the IDP camp in search of firewood in the bush.

On March 11, The PUNCH reported that nine out of the abducted 200 women and girls had returned home. This means about 191 are still in captivity.

On March 9, it was also reported that bandits kidnapped no fewer than 15 Tsangaya students at Gidan Bakuso area of Gada Local Government Area in Sokoto State. The incident took place about 1am at the school premises.

On March 7, 2024, about 287 schoolchildren, some older students and members of the school staff were abducted in the town of Kuriga, Kaduna State.

Going by the above figures, it implies that about 493 children and adults are currently held by bandits in Kaduna, Sokoto and Borno states,

NSCDC vows rescue

The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ahmed Audi, said on Thursday that abducted students and teachers of Government Secondary School and LEA Primary School in Kuriga Chikun LGA in Kaduna would be rescued.

Audi gave this assurance in a when he visited the Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, a statement on Thursday by the NSCDC spokesman, Babawale Afolabi, stated.

The CG said the corps was ready to work with relevant security agencies to effect the release of the students and their teachers and to ensure that the perpetrators do not go scot-free.

Audi stated, “We are ready to work in collaboration with all relevant security agencies with full mechanisms and security apparatus put in place to see that the perpetrators of this heinous crime do not go scot-free.

"The NSCDC remains a key actor in the nation’s internal security and the lead agency in the Safe Schools Initiative. Currently, we are in strong synergy with the Nigerian Army, the Police and others for the quick and safe return of the abducted students.”

He appealed to communities in Kaduna State to work closely with security agencies by providing actionable intelligence and information to achieve the desired success and results afterwards.

Governor Sani lauded the effective collaboration of the corps with the Armed Forces, Nigeria Police, and the DSS, saying all critical stakeholders must play active roles to forestall criminal activities in the Kaduna State.

The Defence Headquarters, on Thursday, described the recent abductions in Borno and Kaduna states as a gross act of cowardice on the part of terrorists.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, the Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen Buba Edward, said the terrorists resorted to attacking harmless citizens as a result of the military onslaught against them.

He said the terrorists and bandits were also aware of the doom that awaited them with the deployment of the newly acquired fighter jets.

Buba said the criminal groups aimed to use the abducted students and IDPs as shields to prevent the military from bombarding them.

He also said the criminal groups carried out the attacks to boost their recruitment drive, adding that the military had in past operations killed their commanders and foot soldiers.

Buba said, “The terrorists have exhibited gross cowardice. If you are following our operations you will know that we have been going after them and killed many of their commanders and foot soldiers. Troops have unleashed onslaught on them. They have made life unbearable and too hot for them. In return, they have gone for soft targets and the reason is obvious.

"I told you recently, we just received some platforms. These platforms are not for jokes. If many do not know the functions of these platforms, I tell you, the terrorists do. To protect themselves, they carried out these recent attacks to use their victims as human shields and also to surge their recruitment drive because we have depleted their ranks.

CrimeKidnapping: FCT Police, DSS Don’t Have Ordinary Tracking Devices – Wike by Fareke(op): 2:31am On Mar 15, 2024
The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has berated the lack of tracking equipment for security agencies in the nation’s capital, saying his administration will purchase drones for surveillance at border communities.
He singled out the FCT commands of the police and the Department of State Services, which he said lacked ordinary tracking devices.

The minister spoke during a chat with journalists on Thursday.

He said, “It’s unfortunate to say this, that mostly the security agencies, in particular I will say, the police here, are not adequately equipped. In fact, you cannot believe it that the police command of the FCT do not even have ordinary tracking device. You cannot believe that.

Not only them, even the FCT Command of the Department of State Services do not even have. And the only one they have is at the headquarters. So, if there are things to do, they have to go to the headquarters, which is not supposed to be.

"Luckily, I told Mr President that look, we have to do something, and there must be emergency procurement of this equipment.”

He explained that his administration had earlier applied to the Bureau of Public Procurement for emergency procurement of equipment for the security agencies, but was denied, until the President gave approval in January, following the abduction of some persons.

Wike also said that the FCT Administration under his leadership planned to purchase drones to enhance and monitor security, particularly at the boundaries of the FCT.

"In fact, that is one of the approvals Mr President gave to us. We are going to purchase our own drones to help in surveillance and in operation, particularly within these boundaries that the topography is so bad, so hilly, and where you have the forests. And we make sure that it is provided in the 2024 statutory budget. I briefed this to the National Assembly yesterday (Wednesday) and they were highly elated,” he said.

PoliticsUndersea Cable Damage Causes Internet Outages In Nigeria, Ghana, Others by Fareke(op): 7:55pm On Mar 14, 2024
By Oliwakemi Abimbola

Internet watchdog, NetBlocks has said internet connectivity disruption in eight West African countries, including Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon Ivory Coast, Liberia, and the Benin Republic on Thursday was a result of undersea cable damage.

NetBlocks stated this in a post on its X handle on Thursday.

NetBlocks is a watchdog organisation that monitors cybersecurity and the governance of the Internet. The service was launched in 2017 to monitor Internet freedom.

NetBlocks, in the post, said, “Live network data show today’s telecoms disruption in #Africa has intensified; the incident has high impact to West Africa with significant reductions in connectivity evident across the continent; operators report multiple subsea cable failures.”

Earlier, before that, it posted, “Confirmed: Live network data show a major disruption to internet connectivity in and around West and Central #Africa; the incident affects networks supplying telecoms via subsea cables to multiple countries and operators.”

Also, one of the world’s leading financial news organisations, Bloomberg, the West Africa Cable System, MainOne, and ACE sea cables — arteries for telecommunications data — were all affected on Thursday.

MTN Nigeria, in a post on its X handle confirmed the internet disruption. It explained that the network outage experienced by its subscribers was a “result of damage to international undersea cables across East & West Africa”.

"The repair process is ongoing to resolve the situation as soon as possible. Please look out for further updates,” MTN Nigeria said.

Already, the National Communications Authority in Ghana has revealed that multiple undersea cable disruptions have led to an outage of internet services in the country.

According to a statement from the Authority seen by our correspondent on Thursday, NCA said “The disruptions affecting multiple undersea cables responsible for carrying international traffic have occurred in Senegal and Cote D’Ivoire and with some disruptions in Portugal. This has led to a significant degradation of data services across the country.

"It is important to note that the Mobile Network Operators have redundancies on other cables and are working around the clock to restore full services. In addition, the MNOs have informed affected customers of the disruptions via various channels.”

Some Ghanaians have taken to the social media platform, X, (formerly Twitter) to express their displeasure with the situation, which had started in the morning.

An X user, George Koranteng, asked “Is it my area or the whole Ghana MTN internet is down?’

Another user, Koho Khan, tweeted, “I legit can’t do any work today because I got no internet. Legit nothing is working. Lol Ghana.”

In a message from MTN Ghana to their customers at 1 pm Ghanaian time, the telecoms provider apologised and said “This is due to disruption on our international undersea cables. Our technical teams are working with our international partners to resolve the issue. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience and will keep you updated.”

The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications also issued a statement signed by one Louise Bobbie Osei, notifying users of the outage which it said affected internet, date, and Voice over IP services of the “Chamber, the Mobile Network Operators and the Data Service Providers to varying degrees. As a result, customers and subscribers are currently experiencing service challenges.”

PoliticsBudget Padding: Senate Still Owes Nigerians Some Answers – Obi by Fareke(op): 5:38am On Mar 14, 2024
By Soonest Nathaniel

Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi, is of the opinion that the Nigerian Senate still owes the people some explanations as regards the budget padding scandal rocking the Upper Chambers at the moment.

Obi said the claims and counter-claims over the alleged N3trillion which was padded into the 2024 budget, requires proper explanation as to what Nigerians must need to know regarding management of the nation’s.

The Senate under the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio had on Tuesday suspended Senator Abdul Ningi over allegations of N3.7trn padding of the 2024 Budget.

Ningi, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Bauchi Central Senatorial District, was suspended for three months after a long stormy session in the red chamber.

In an interview, Ningi had claimed that the Federal Government is operating two versions of the 2024 budget and that the N28.7 trillion Budget passed and signed into law by President Bola Tinubu was skewed against the North.

Many Senators and the Presidency had pounced on Ningi, describing his claims as “far-fetched and unbecoming of a leader of his status”.

Ningi would later deny saying that the country is operating two budgets but insisted that only N25trn of the budget was tied to projects while N3.7trn had no project tied to it.

Trying to clarify the claims made by Ningi, the presidency came out to say that the National Assembly padded the budget with N1.27tn, adding that it does “not see where the N3tn is coming from.”

Addressing both the Senate and the Presidency in a communique shared via X, Mr Obi asserted that it is sacrosanct for every penny of Nigeria’s public fund to be used for public good, adding that the alleged N3 trillion is more than the national budget of the two most critical components of the human development index, health and education, combined.

He stressed that even if there is no N3trillion as claimed, then, the N1.2 trillion which the executive branch admitted to have been padded, if channeled into any of the critical areas of development, could have positively impacted the nation and uplifted the people.

Below is Mr Obi’s full take on the budget padding issue.

The fuss over the alleged N3 trillion padded into the 2024 budget raised by a Senator still rages as the Senate’s reaction of suspending the whistle-blower has not addressed vital issues emanating from the allegation.

The Senator is insisting on his allegation and the Executive agreed that there was only N1.2trillion padded not N3trillion as alleged by the Senator. Fresh allegations have also cropped up over indiscriminate and unbalanced allocation of constituency projects by the Senate leadership.

A civic society group, Budgit, through their official, have also added their voice to agree with the Senator. They allege that there was no detailed project allocations for about N3.7trn in the 2024 Appropriation Act.

As the Senate suspension of the senator involved has not addressed the issue, they still owe the Nigerian public a clear clarification over the various claims and counterclaims, including that of the executive arm, to be able to know exactly what is happening, and also disclose to the public, the exact amounts allocated for constituency projects for appropriate monitoring of implementation by the public.

I had particularly elucidated in my earlier comment on what we can use the N3 trillion to achieve, by showing that it is more than the national budget of the two most critical components of the human development index, health and education, combined.

Now that the executive arm has accepted that the padded amount is only N1.2 trillion, it is still a very significant amount, when you consider that it is almost 5 times the N251.47 billion proposed for Universal Basic Education, which is the foundation of education, in the Country.

Today in Nigeria, the greatest challenge to human resource development is education, which has been identified as most critical at the basic level.

Nigeria has about 20 million out-of-school children today because of the poor investment in education. These are resources that would have been utilised to ensure that our children are taken off the streets and returned to schools.

The N1.2 trillion which the executive branch admitted to have been padded, if channeled into any of the critical areas of development, could have positively impacted the nation and uplifted the people.

And if indeed the report from Budgit is true, that there is about N3.7 trillion without any detailed project allocations, I strongly urge the Senate to do more detailed work of channeling these funds into the critical areas of development – education, health and pulling people out of poverty, which will in turn, minimise the criminality we are facing today.

We must, as a matter of urgency, put a stop to all the wastage of our scarce resources, amid the excruciating hardship in the country. Let every penny of our public fund be used for public good. That is the only way to achieve the New Nigeria we are working towards.

PoliticsWe Won’t Pay A Dime To Kidnappers As Ransom – FG by Fareke(op): 5:32am On Mar 14, 2024
By Baba Martins

President Bola Tinubu has directed that no ransom should be paid to kidnappers no matter the amount of pressure.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made this known during the post-Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at Aso Rock on Wednesday.

The Minister noted that government is working round the clock to make sure that those kidnapped were returned to their families.

In Kaduna, not less than 200 students, pupils and their teachers were taken away from Kuriga village and 16 residents abducted in Gonin Gora, all of them are still with the kidnappers.

While the kidnappers of 16 citizens Gonin Gora were reported to be demanding a ransom of N40 trillion, 11 Hilux vans and 150 motorcycles for their release, nothing has been heard from those that took away the students of Kuriga school.

Also in Sokoto, 15 persons were seized in Gidan Bakuso village while about 50 women were reportedly abducted by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State.

Answering questions from journalists at the State House, Abuja, the Minister acknowledged the recent upsurge in attacks, noting that the government was keeping a close eye on the situation while the security agencies were taking necessary measures to stop them in their track.

Idris said: “Now, it is true that some of these are happening. We have seen what has happened in Kaduna, in Borno and then in Sokoto. Of course, government is watching that very closely and not just watching, also ensuring that security agencies are taking proactive steps to ensure that this is halted significantly.

"Now, like I said, Mr. President has said that is an unacceptable situation and the government will not condone abductions or kidnappings or any kind of criminality in that direction. We’re seeing this happening and government is taking very proactive steps, first to mitigate that, and also to stop the spread of this apparently.

“We are seeing that the more the security agencies are also hitting these targets or criminals, the more they are pushed to also getting some soft targets. But government is not taking any excuses.”

The Minister said the president has directed that security agencies must, as a matter of urgency, ensure that all those who have been kidnapped are brought back in safety and also in the process to “ensure that not a dime is paid as ransom.

“So, it’s important to underscore that no dime, government is not paying anybody any dime and the government is optimistic that these children and other people that have been abducted will be brought back to their families in safety.”

PoliticsRemi Tinubu: At 60, I’m Too Old To Be Afraid Of Death by Fareke(op): 10:25pm On Mar 12, 2024
By Hassan Ibrahim

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu says at the age of 60 years, she is too old to be afraid of death.

The president’s wife said this at the palace of Emir of Bauchi, Dr Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu, on Tuesday.

The First Lady visited Bauchi to commission an Alternative High School and ICT centre.

But during the visit, the issue of a cleric, Sunusi Abubakar, who issued death threat against Tinubu’s wife, was discussed.

In a viral video, the cleric had described her as an infidel who should be killed, a comment he withdrew after nationwide outrage.

In her speech at the palace, the First Lady said, “I want to thank His Excellency for assuring me that I am safe but what I said is that I am too old to be afraid. If God has granted me 60 years, I think I shouldn’t be afraid of death but I thank God I had the courage to come. Nigeria belongs to all of us and this is the time to unite more than ever before.

"Nigeria needs prayers and we believe that God will answer our prayers. I am here today to perform official duty and also pay my Royal respect to His Royal Highness the Emir of Bauchi and to thank him for the warm reception we received today which is a great honour to me and I truly appreciate that.”

Earlier, Governor Bala Mohammed apologised to the wife of the President, on behalf of the entire people of Bauchi over the threat.

Mohammed had said, “You have distinguished yourself, not only as a distinguished senator, but a politician that has opened new frontiers of politics and politicking; because we have set aside all the differences of politics and partisanship and, of course I am aware of some of the challenges and threat to your life and person by somebody from this state. I was so disappointed and frustrated; but you made my day, as a courageous mother, you decided to come to Bauchi.

"Your Royal Highness, this distinguished lady has really shown that Nigeria is working, Nigeria is one and nobody can play politics with our lives. We are grateful and you are more important to us than our own lives and nothing will happen to you and we will deal with him and Allah will deal with him by the grace of God.

"On behalf of the Royal Highness and the people of Bauchi, we apologise for the national embarrassment; it will not happen again.”

PoliticsAPC Vs PDP: When A Woman Marries A Second Husband by Fareke(op): 5:46am On Mar 12, 2024
By Azuka Onwuka

There is an Igbo proverb that says: When a woman marries the second husband, she understands the true worth of the first husband. It is the same for a man who divorces his wife and marries a second wife. Usually, the first spouse seems bad until the divorce occurs and another marriage takes place. Some people get a better spouse. But many get a spouse worse than their first. Nigeria’s experience seems to be the latter.

It is scary to admit that, as bad as the Peoples Democratic Party was in its 16 years in power, it is better than the All Progressives Congress, which had criticised the PDP and promised to do things better if voted in. In its almost nine years in power, the APC has looked shockingly different from everything it said it would be.

Technically, there was no APC in 1999 when the PDP took over from the military. What the country had was the All Peoples Party, which later became the All Nigeria Peoples Party and the Alliance for Democracy, which later became Action Congress and then Action Congress of Nigeria. In 2009, Muhammadu Buhari, who was the presidential candidate of the ANPP in 2003 and 2007, pulled out of the ANPP to form the Congress for Progressive Change. The APC was formed in 2013 by the CPC, ACN and ANPP. Therefore, in reality, the APC had been in existence as the opposition party through the ANPP, ACN and CPC.

In most true democracies, two or three parties usually rotate power among themselves. The voting masses never allow one party to be in office for too long. Whether the country practises the presidential system, which has terms, or the parliamentary system, which is not termed, it is rare to see any true democracy allow one party to rule for more than 12 years. The people usually get tired of one party and vote it out. That way, the people feel that power truly belongs to them. It also creates an opportunity for a new party to come in with new ideas. The country is the better for it as it continues to improve.

When Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999, power fell on the PDP. The APP disputed the results, but the Supreme Court eventually ruled in favour of the PDP. The APP became the main opposition party supported by the AD.

But the key joy of most Nigerians was that finally, the military had left governance. It was time for the people to take charge of governance. And unlike in the past when democratic rule had been short-lived, not lasting up to six years on three occasions, this Fourth Republic has lasted for almost 25 years since May 1999. That’s unbelievably long.

After being in office for some years, the PDP was infected by hubris. Even though the Independent National Electoral Commission conducted elections whose transparency and fidelity could not be ascertained, the PDP was so much ahead of the opposition that it looked indomitable. It was not surprising that Chief Vincent Ogbulafor, who was the chairman of the PDP, boasted in 2008 that the party would rule Nigeria for 60 years. The attitude of many PDP politicians was that nobody could unseat them, because they understood how to “win” elections.

(read “results engineering”). Indeed, if the PDP continued to produce presidents like Chief Olusegun who believed in winning at all costs, the PDP would still be in power by now.

However, Obasanjo committed “the error” of choosing a gentleman who was not desperate for power like Dr Goodluck Jonathan as the vice presidential candidate of the party for the 2007 election. The death of former President Umaru Yar’Adua in office meant that Jonathan, as his deputy, would become the president. After completing the tenure of Yar’Adua and completing his own tenure, he wanted a transparent election in 2015, which did not end well for him. That was how the PDP left office and the APC took over.

Ironically, despite being a beneficiary of Jonathan’s transparent election in which he allowed the electoral body to act independently, Buhari did not give the electoral body the type of free hand it had under Jonathan. Even though Bola Tinubu has been in office for less than one year as president, his antecedents as the strongman of Lagos politics since 1999 do not indicate that he would want to act like a Jonathan. Therefore, it will be hard for power to be wrested from the APC.

a Jonathan. Therefore, it will be hard for power to be wrested from the APC.

While the PDP was in power, the three parties that later became the APC regularly came hard on the PDP, criticising it as incompetent, and promising to run a more democratic, transparent, inclusive, productive, result-oriented country, if elected. Ironically, the APC has fallen below the PDP in all parameters. But what makes the APC case worse is that while the PDP did not pretend to be saintly, the APC still tries to project the facade of being incorruptible, democratic, transparent, strategic, frugal, people-centric, result-oriented.

EducationSchools In 14 States, FCT Risk Attacks, Says FG by Fareke(op): 5:44am On Mar 11, 2024
Against the backdrop of the resurgence of the mass abduction of pupils, the Federal Government has said schools in 14 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, are at risk of attacks by bandits and insurgents.

The National Coordinator of Financing Safe Schools in Nigeria, Hajia Halima Iliya, confirmed to The PUNCH on Sunday, that the data of at-risk schools had been collected for intervention.

Iliya declined to identify the states, but the Commander of the National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre, Nigeria Security, and Civil Defence Corps, Hammed Abodunrin, said they included Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Benue, Yobe, Katsina, FCT, Kebbi, Sokoto, Plateau, Zamfara and three others.

No fewer than 465 pupils, teachers, and women abducted in the past week are still in the custody of their captors.

Fifteen pupils of an Islamiya school in Sokoto State were kidnapped in the early hours of Saturday, less than 72 hours after 287 schoolchildren and teachers were abducted from the LEA primary school and the Government Secondary School both at Kuriga, in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

However, 28 of them were on Sunday reported to have escaped 259 in captivity.

A few days before the Kaduna incident, 200 female Internally Displaced Persons were taken away by terrorists in Borno State.

The women were kidnapped in Ngala, the headquarters of Gambarou Ngala in Borno state while fetching firewood in the bush.

On Sunday, there were reports that nine of them had regained freedom remaining 191 in captivity.

Penultimate Thursday, bandits abducted an undisclosed number of people in the Gonin-Gora community in the same Chikun LGA of Kaduna, prompting residents to barricade the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway in protest.

As a response to the April 2014 abduction of the Chibok school girls, the Safe Schools Initiative was launched by the United Nations Special Envoy for Global Education, Gordon Brown, alongside the Nigerian Global Business Coalition for Education and private sector leaders at the World Economic Forum Africa.

Safe schools

The initiative entails a combination of school-based interventions, community interventions to protect schools, and special measures for at-risk populations.

The Federal Government inaugurated the Safe Schools Fund with a $10m contribution and another $10m pledge from the private sector.

In further support for the programme, the Federal Government budgeted N15bn for the SSI in the 2023 fiscal year.

Speaking on the programme in an interview with one of our correspondents on Sunday, Iliya explained that the implementation of the SSI had started in several states.

Responding to questions on what was being done to fortify schools against bandit attacks, she said, “The project has taken off. We commenced implementation in 2023 with the flag off of the National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre, which we intend to replicate at state and local government levels.

“The states have selected most at-risk schools in each senatorial zone for the implementation of National Plan on Financing Safe Schools Programme (2023-2026).’’

In response to the development, the coordinator explained that state governors had expressed plans to provide funding for the SSI for the protection of pupils and teachers in the identified locations.

She added, “Some states have made provision for the Safe Schools Programme in their 2024 budget in line with the National Plan. We intend to engage the states to guide them through the implementation.

"We’ve communicated to all the states; letters have been written for inclusion of Safe Schools in their budget and for them to select the most at-risk schools. More than 11 states have responded. The budget from states is for them to work on physical infrastructure such as fencing state schools and put other control measures.’’

Iliya further disclosed that the Federal Ministry of Education and the NSCDC had conducted some training for their men, adding that the Nigeria Police had trained senior officers, including all divisional police officers across the country on Safe Schools.

According to her, the security forces have commissioned equipment that would be deployed to various state commands for the operations.

"Data of at-risk schools from 14 states, including the FCT have so far been collected for intervention. The Defence headquarters and DSS (Department of Security Services) are expected to mainstream Safe Schools through capacity building of their officers. N15b was provided and released as takeoff in 2023; utilisation is still ongoing,’’ she stated.

The Commander of the National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre, NSCDC, Abodunrin, said the four-year project was being implemented simultaneously in all the states but in phases, adding that it began with the sensitisation and training of security personnel late last year.

He condemned the latest abductions of school pupils, noting that the attackers operated in locations with poor telecommunication service.

Abodunrin said, “The attacks are unfortunate. What the attackers do is to look for soft targets. They now go to villages where they feel they can quickly operate before help can come. They also target when communication networks are bad. The cases in Ekiti and Kaduna are examples where community members could not quickly call for help. There is also the need to raise more awareness in the communities.

"There is a need for more cooperation. Schools are to register on www.nssrcc.gov.ng detailing their addresses and at least a phone number. Registration is free. Any registered school will automatically be on a database with their coordinates for easy accessibility.

"There are patrols. Global standards do not allow security operatives to be in schools for various reasons. Those who want to target them may kill or injure students and other members of the school communities in the process. There will be more patrols.’’

The commander also said that since security requires personal attention, students and teachers would be given training on personal safety and protection.

“Equipment and platforms are also being developed to facilitate easy communication even without a network. They will be trained on this too. Capacity of various communities are being built in the areas of personal security and information management for effective preventive and response efforts,’’ he disclosed.

PoliticsTinubu To Launch Students Loan Scheme Thursday — Presidency by Fareke(op): 10:11pm On Mar 10, 2024
By Stephen Angbulu

President Bola Tinubu will launch the Student Loan Scheme on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Ajuri Ngelale, disclosed this when he spoke on TVC’s Politics on Sunday monitored by PUNCH Online.

On the programme titled ‘Counting the Cost of Presidents Tinubu’s Reforms,’ Ngelale highlighted some of the President’s welfare initiatives being implemented at the moment, saying, “Later this week, on Thursday, the President will launch the historic National Student Loan Programme.”

“This is a major form of obligation reduction for Nigerians and families and young people at a time when Nigerians are feeling the pinch. We believe this is the way to go,” he added.

On June 12, 2023, Tinubu signed the Access to Higher Education Act, 2023, into law to enable indigent students to access interest-free loans for their educational pursuits in any Nigerian tertiary institution.

The move was in “fulfillment of one of his campaign promises to liberalise funding of education,” a member of the then Presidential Strategy Team, Dele Alake, said.

The Act, popularly known as the Students Loan Law, also established the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, which is expected to handle all loan requests, grants, disbursement, and recovery.

The government initially said it would take effect in September, but it did not.

However, Tinubu had insisted that the scheme would go live in January 2024. Declaring the 29th session of the annual Nigeria Economic Summit in Abuja open on October 23, 2023, the President said, “By January 2024, the new Students Loan Programme must commence. To the future of our children and students, we’re saying no more strikes!”

He proposed N50bn for its take-off in the 2024 budget he presented to the National Assembly last November.

On February 7, the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund, Dr Akintunde Sawyerr, exclusively confirmed to our correspondent that the much-awaited scheme would go live on February 21, when President Tinubu launches it at the State House, Abuja.

However, the launch was delayed, with Sawyerr, alongside Presidency sources, explaining that the lag time is to enable the Fund to expand its mandate to include students seeking loans for skills development, as directed by the President.

After receiving briefing from the NELFUND team led by the Minister of State for Education, Dr Yusuf Sununu, on January 22, the President directed the Fund to extend interest-free loans to Nigerian students interested in skill-development programmes.

Tinubu based his decision on the need for the scheme to accommodate those who may not want to pursue a university education, noting that skill acquisition is as essential as obtaining undergraduate and graduate academic qualifications.

"This is not an exclusive programme. It is catering to all of our young people. Young Nigerians are gifted in different areas.

“This is not only for those who want to be doctors, lawyers, and accountants. It is also for those who aspire to use their skilled and trained hands to build our nation.

"In accordance with this, I have instructed NELFUND to explore all opportunities to inculcate skill-development programmes because not everybody wants to go through a full university education,” he had said.

Linking this directive to the delay, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga had told The PUNCH, “Don’t forget that the last time they met, the President asked them to go and expand their mandate to include those who want to learn vocational skills. That could be the reason why the whole thing was delayed; they had to increase the scope.”

On Saturday, Sawyerr also told our correspondent that the delay is due to unperfected backend systems to power the application process as the scheme is “entirely technologically driven.”

He said, “The delay in take-off was basically to enable the agency to put all necessary measures in place as the scheme is entirely technologically driven.”

PoliticsTinubu Better Than Peter Obi – El-rufai’s Son, Bello by Fareke(op): 5:03pm On Mar 10, 2024
Seun Opejobi

The member representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Bello El-Rufai, has said President Bola Tinubu is better than Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Bello said Tinubu is the most experienced politician to become President.

Featuring on Seun Okinbaloye’s podcast, Bello said Tinubu is not an accidental President.

According to Bello: “I think Asiwaju is the most experienced politician we’ve had as president because we’ve had many accidental president’s but he prepared for it.

“That is why some of us did not follow the governor Obi wave, you can do what you want while comparing Anambra to Lagos.

“Without a doubt, Tinubu is better than Peter Obi, I don’t think he’s a bad man; but Lagos is more develop than Anambra.
"Peter Obi is not in the category of Fashola or my father. I think Anambra did well in the educational sector but the state has always done well in WAEC.

“My issue with what’s going on in Labour Party is that they believe one person can solve this problem but it’s not going to work, this is a collective effort.”

PoliticsWe’re Tackling Food Crisis, Economic Hardship – Governors by Fareke(op): 3:35pm On Mar 10, 2024
Governors of the 36 states of the federation say they have been introducing different strategies and measures to end the current economic hardship and food crisis in their states.

In a report signed by its Acting Head of Media, Halimah Salihu Ahmed, the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) said the governors were committed to ending the pain and suffering of citizens in the land.

Recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had met with the state governors at the Council Chambers of the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, in February, where issues of hike in food prices, economic hardship and others were deliberated upon with a view to preferring solutions.

The NGF report disclosed that Kwara State governor and chairman of the NGF, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq in collaboration with Governors Agbu Kefas of Taraba State; Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State; and Ahmed Ododo of Kogi State were pushing for increased crop production through the federal Ministry of agriculture to address food shortages.

The report reads in part, “In Kano State, authorities raided warehouses where traders are suspected of hoarding food supplies. In Yobe State, government banned bulk purchases of grains from local markets to stop hoarding and exports across Nigeria’s borders.

“In Niger State, Governor Mohammed Umar Bago announced a ban on the mass purchase of foodstuffs from local markets. He ordered security forces to confiscate trucks carrying products in bulk and share the food to the people.

"The Ekiti State Government has committed the sum of N1 billion to improve food production, especially to embark on land preparation, driven by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security’s tractorization subsidy scheme, and an input supply programme to support small scale farmers.

"In Zamfara State, last week, Governor Dauda Lawal hosted the Sweden Ambassador, Annika Hahn-Englund, on partnership on how to grow the state economy and address the current hardships. The Lagos State, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, expressed his government’s willingness to expand its relationship with the Netherlands in different sectors, especially the agricultural sector to ensure food security in the state.”

CrimeNigeria Police Extort N250,000 From Traditional Worshippers In Lagos For Being F by Fareke(op): 8:39pm On Mar 03, 2024
The Lagos Coordinator for Take-It-Back Movement, who disclosed this to SaharaReporters on Sunday, said that though the police have released them, the officers have refused to return the N250,000 extorted from them.

Personnel of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police Tactical Unit, Ijegun, have allegedly extorted N250,000 from some traditionalists for having 'Ifa’ calabash in their vehicle.

The Lagos Coordinator for Take-It-Back Movement, who disclosed this to SaharaReporters on Sunday, said that though the police have released them, the officers have refused to return the N250,000 extorted from them.

One Supol Mike who arrested the traditionalists in a recorded telephone conversation which was made available to SaharaReporters, is heard telling the caller: "If I have charged them to court, will you be calling and demanding for refund of money?"

When asked by the caller what their offence was, the police officer responded that "they were suspected to be cultists and ritualists”.

“If I have charged them to court, will you be calling me? You called me and I released them to you, why are you calling me again about money extorted from them?"

The officer also said that the only things found on them were ‘Ifa calabash, palm kernel and Aje shell’.

However, the TIB, a pro-democracy organisation has demanded an immediate refund of the extorted money, adding that "their offence was seeing them with ‘Ifa’ calabash which we don’t think is a criminal offence as everyone is entitled and have the right to worship whatever he or she believes in".

The TIB coordinator regretted that the traditional religion practitioners were detained for about five hours without stating any form of offence they committed except that they were found with ‘Ifa’ calabash.

He said, "I spoke with one of the officers who also confirmed the reason for the arrest and I asked if it is a criminal offence in Nigeria for someone to be fetish?

"They were detained without any substantial evidence to tag them a criminal. I spoke with the OC (officer-in-charge) who heads the tactical unit and he also confirmed nothing incriminating was found on them except the ‘Ifa’ calabash and said they will be released on bail when they get the real fact that their ‘Ifa’ calabash is not harmful.

"The policemen later released them after they were forced to withdraw the sum of N258,400 from a Point of Sale (POS) agent just outside the station."

"Contents of the Ifa ceramic were palm kernel and 'Aje' shell. Practising Ifa is not a criminal offence; why did they extort the sum of N258,400 from them?" TIB asked.

Meanwhile, efforts made by SaharaReporters to speak with the Command's spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, over the incident were not successful as he rejected the phone calls.

He simply said in a text message: "Sorry I can’t take this call right now. For complaints about police action, call 08090277714, 08090277712, 08090277711, 08090277713, 09111111151, 09111991116, 09111111150. Or send a text."

RomanceWe Are Wife Materials’, Deaf Women Cry Out Over Neglect by Fareke(op): 5:53pm On Mar 03, 2024
Women living with hearing impairment in Niger have appealed to men who are looking for life partners, to seek their hands in marriage, as the condition will not prevent them from building a healthy family.

The women spoke through their leader, Hajiya Salamatu Hammed, during the celebration for this year’s World Hearing Day on Sunday in Minna.

Hammed urged men not to neglect deaf women, saying “We are marriage materials like any other woman.”

She, therefore, called on all eligible men to feel free to approach any deaf woman for marriage, adding, We are like any other woman who gives birth to normal children.”

She called on all tiers of government to employ interpreters at all public health institutions in the state to enable people with hearing problems to have access to quality health care.

According to Hammed, I was not born as a deaf child, but I started having problems after an operation during delivery which affected my voice. I can hear but lost my voice as a result of the operation carried out on me to bring out my baby.”

She said that none of her children have a hearing problem, confirming that those women with hearing impairment can still give birth to normal children.

In his presentation, an expert on Audiology, Dr. Sidi Maku, Permanent Secretary, Special Duties, in the state Ministry of Health and Hospital Services, lamented the neglect of persons with hearing challenges in the country.

Maku said people with hearing impairment are few but neglected, praying to God to grant succour to those with the problem.

“You may not appreciate until you see someone who cannot hear, so that is why we are here to celebrate it. The deaf may not know anything happening around them,” he said.

He warned that hearing impairment can be caused by listening to loud music or slapping toddlers on their ears.

According to him, “using feathers, cotton board to clean the ears can also lead to the defect.

“Hereditary from parents is also a cause.”

The Expert said, “it is possible for deaf parents to beget children without hearing problems.”

Maku, who was a former Commissioner for Health in the state, revealed that the state has only three active audiologists for its Ear Nose Throat (ENT) clinic.

He added that all three surgeons are based in the state capital.

The Medical Doctor said that over 270 million people suffer from hearing impairment globally as a result of neglect, adding that Nigeria has only 176 ENT surgeons. (NAN)

PoliticsDon’t Sabotage Tinubu’s Efforts In Fixing Economy - Oyintiloye Tells Governors by Fareke(op): 5:28pm On Mar 03, 2024
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye has urged state governors and senior civil servants to give President Bola Tinubu maximum support as he tries to fix Nigeria’s economy.

Oyintiloye said that it is not possible for the president alone to achieve his Renewed Hope Agenda for the people without the support of the governors and top civil servants, who were the engine room of the government.

He said this while speaking with newsmen on Sunday in Osogbo.

Oyintiloye said that the governors needed to support the various initiatives of the president in fixing the economy by utilising their monthly allocation for poverty alleviation in their various states.

The APC Chieftain said that the various efforts of the president in fixing the economy may not be immediately visible to many Nigerians, if the state governors refused to utilise their monthly allocation for the benefit of the masses in their states.

He said: “This is the time for state governors, irrespective of political affiliations to join the president in fixing the economy by attending to the welfare of the people.

"What the president is doing at the centre to fix the economy will only be meaningful to the people, if the state governors can lend a helping hands.

“What the governors are currently collecting as monthly allocation is more than in enough to lift the people out of poverty in relation to what the president is doing.

"While the masses are shouting the name of the president at every slight discomfort, they should also hold their governors accountable, asking them what they are doing with the improved monthly allocation.

To set the record straight, the governors have to come out and tell people of their states the amount they have collected since June last year and how they have administered the funds.

“In the reckoning of most Nigerians now, the governors are seen as part of those sabotaging efforts of the president to lessen effects of the removal of fuel subsidy on the people.

"We are in a very critical situation in which unnecessary bureaucracy which can hinder the efforts of the president be suspended.

“Any act of sabotage in whatever form in the civil service should be rooted out for the sake of the benefit of the masses.”

Oyintiloye, however, urged Nigerians to be patient with the president, adding that with all the various interventions the president is putting in place, the country will soon attain the height of desired greatness.

PoliticsOjema Ojetu Sponsors Bill Seeking To Stop NW, SS, SW From Presidential Election by Fareke(op): 5:05am On Mar 03, 2024
The North-West, South-West and South-South geo-political zones of the country may not field a presidential candidate in the 2027 general election if ongoing moves to alter relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) scales through.

Sunday PUNCH exclusively gathered that a bill “For an Act to alter the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) to make provisions for rotation of power among the geo-political zones, senatorial zones and federal constituencies in presidential, governorship and senatorial elections in Nigeria,” is currently before the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review.

Sponsored by member representing Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency, Benue State, Ojema Ojetu, the proposed legislation, if passed into law, will bar zones that have produced the President of Nigeria since the return to democratic governance in 1999.

The bill seeks to alter Section 133 of the constitution by inserting sub-sections 2, 3 and 4 to the nation’s extant laws.

A copy of the bill exclusively obtained by Sunday PUNCH indicated that sub-section 2 reads thus, “The Office of the President of Nigeria shall revolve round the six geo- political zones, with each state holding the office for a maximum of two terms of four years each, to give every section and state in Nigeria a sense of inclusion, participation and representation in Nigeria’s democracy.”

Sub-section 3 of the bill provides that “Any zone in Nigeria which has produced a President of the Federal Republic shall not be eligible to produce another President until the other zones take their turns, while (4) says, “The effective date for consideration in the rotation of power shall be 29th of May, 1999 when the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) became effective.”

The bill, according to Ojotu, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party also seeks alteration to the 1999 Constitution with the insertion of sub-sections 6 and 7.

In (6), the proposed law provides that “The office of the governor of a state in Nigeria shall revolve round all the three senatorial zones in the state, to give every indigene of the state a sense of inclusion, participation and representation in the development of the state; while (7) states that “Every senatorial zone in a state which has produced governor of that state in a democratically conducted election shall not be eligible to produce a governor, unless and until other senatorial zones produce governors of the state.”

That is not all as Ojotu’s proposed legislation also seeks an alteration of Section 48 of the Constitution with the introduction of sub-sections 1 (a) and (b).

1(a) provides that “Senatorial election shall rotate round all the federal constituencies in the Senatorial zone to give a sense of inclusion, participation and representation in the constituencies to engineer social progress and development;” and (b) says that “Every federal constituency in a Senatorial district which has produced a Senator shall not be eligible to produce a Senator, unless and until all other Federal Constituencies produce a Senator.”

The North Central has only produced military Heads of State but never an elected president since the attainment of political independence in 1960.

Following the return to democracy, Nigerians elected Olusegun Obasanjo from Ogun State, South-West Nigeria in 1999, even as he went on to win re-election in 2003 and stayed on till May 29, 2007.

Obasanjo was succeeded by the late Umaru Yar’ Adua from Katsina State in 2007.

Yar’Adua died in office in 2010 and was succeeded by the then Vice President, Goodluck Jonathan (South-South) who upon the expiration of that tenure, secured the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party and won the 2011 presidential election.

Jonathan lost his second-bid for the presidential seat to Muhammadu Buhari, another man from Katsina State in 2015 and handed the baton in 2023 to the incumbent President, Bola Tinubu from Lagos State, South-West Nigeria.

Should Ojotu secures the legislative nod of his colleagues in Abuja, he would require the support of the state Assemblies for the bill to go through.

PoliticsNo Result So Far To Show Tinubu Came Prepared — Prof Wariboko by Fareke(op): 5:19pm On Mar 02, 2024
A Professor of Social Ethics at Boston University, Nimi Wariboko, says President Bola Tinubu has not produced any result so far to show that he came prepared into office.

"Eight months into a government system is too long not to have a plan,” the author and investment banker said on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, aired on Channels Television on Friday.

He lamented that the President, who won the February 2023 presidential election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had no laid-down plan to cushion the economic effects of the petrol subsidy removal and other policies.

Wariboko described the current administration’s policies as “knee-jerk reactions”, saying that the government of the day lacks vision.

He said, “There’s no point complaining about (ex-President Muhammadu) Buhari. There’s no point complaining about the goodness or the expectation of Buhari. Now, the ball is in his (Tinubu’s) court and he has to do it because he said it was his turn.

"People keep saying he was prepared; he’s been a politician but
the test of everything is the result we are seeing and I don’t think
we have seen any results so far that would justify that accolade being heaped upon him.

The Bible says: If your strength fails you on the day of adversity. it is small. I always tell people that: If your strength fails you on the day of adversity, it was not there. It’s a simple case; we are not seeing the result, we are not even seeing
a clear vision of where the country is going.”

Nigeria is battling rising inflation, food inflation, forex crisis, economic hardship and high cost of living occasioned by the removal of petrol subsidy, attracting protests in parts of the country.

The Nigerian naira has seen a dip in the last nine months since the Tinubu administration collapsed the foreign exchange window. The naira experienced an all-time low, falling from about N700/$1 last May to over N1500/$1 at the moment.

Similarly, the price per litre of Premium Motor Spirit also known as petrol jumped over 350% from N184 last May to over N600 at the moment, depending on the location.

The country’s wobbling economy has been a source of worry to economists, opposition parties, labour unions and civil society organisations who continue to call on the Tinubu administration to fulfil its campaign promises. The Federal Government has reeled out some measures in the last few weeks but Nigerians continue to grapple with the weight of high cost of living.

PoliticsHardship: Hoodlums loot truckload Of Spaghetti In Zaria by Fareke(op): 8:49pm On Mar 01, 2024
A BUA truck conveying cartons of spaghetti has been attacked by hoodlums at Dogarawa axis of Zaria-Kano expressway.

Dogarawa is a settlement located on the outskirt of Zaria along the expressway.

This is coming barely one week after hoodlums hijacked trailers loaded with foodstuffs in the Suleja area of Niger State, stealing bags of rice and other food items amidst widespread hardship in the country.

The trailers were said to be heading for Abuja from Kaduna when the thugs blocked the road and made burnfires on the highway.

An eyewitness disclosed that the Friday incident occurred around 3.15pm after the driver of the truck parked by the road side to observe prayer.

He said immediately after the driver parked, the hoodlums started carting away cartons of spaghetti.

The eyewitness, who described the incident as unfortunate and regrettable, said such act had never occurred around the area since he had been trading there for more than 10 years.

“Not a single cartoon of the spaghetti was left by the hoodlums on the truck,” the source added.

It was learnt that a police team deployed to the scene of the incident arrested five suspects.

PoliticsJos prison: Gunshots, teargas fired as inmates protest reduced food ration by Fareke(op): 8:40pm On Mar 01, 2024
Inmates at the Jos Correctional Centre in Plateau State protested on Friday over the plan to reduce their food ration.

They expressed dissatisfaction over the decision, a situation that forced the prison authorities to fire tear gas canisters and gunshots into the air to bring the situation under control.

Sources at the correctional centre indicated that the contractor in charge of food supply to the centre had complained to the authority about the high cost of food items, especially rice which is a stable menu of the inmates will have to be adjusted from four times to twice in a week and will be substituted by either grains or garri.

This decision seemed not to go down well with the inmates as they expressed their grievances on Friday during a routine briefing by the official in charge.

Confirming the incident to journalists at the Nigerian Correctional Service in Jos, the Controller of Corrections Plateau State Command, Raphael Ibinuhi, stated that tear gas canisters and firing shots in the air were applied to disperse the unruly inmates when they refused to return to their cells.

“By the time the inmates were called this morning for briefing, they were not happy that the period for consumption of rice has been reduced from four times to two in a week and expressed dissatisfaction on the development,” Ibinuhi said.

“I instructed the officer in charge to return them to their cells but instead they became violent and started throwing stones at the personnel. In response and to keep the situation from getting out of hand, we have to resort to firing tear gas canisters and gunshots which enable the handsmen to return the inmates to the cells. Some of the personnel sustained minor injuries from the stones thrown at them but no inmates were injured during as the situation was brought under control.”

The Jos Custodial Centre has 1,064 inmates comprising 1,035 males and 19 females. Of the figure, those awaiting trial are made up of 647 males and 14 females. While convicted inmates consist of 205 males and four female, inmates on death roll are 131.

Following the rising cost of living in the country, many Nigerians have demonstrated, asking the Federal Government to ameliorate their pains.

President Bola Tinubu has called for patience, saying there are benefits of his economic policies in the long term. He however condemned Monday’s nationwide protests embarked upon by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), describing it as unacceptable.

“Allow me to throw a jab here. The Labour Union should understand that no matter how much we cling to our freedom and rights, to call for a strike within nine months of an administration is unacceptable,” Tinubu said in Lagos while commissioning the Lagos Red Line Train connecting Agbado to Oyingbo.

PoliticsPoliticians Overworking Judiciary, Says Retired Judge, Ibrahim Buba by Fareke(op): 8:28pm On Mar 01, 2024
A retired judge of the Federal High Court, Ibrahim Buba, has accused politicians in the country of overworking the judiciary arm of government to keep democracy going.

He noted that oftentimes, it is easier for people to notice issues with the judiciary rather than the bigger problems with politicians and the political system.

According to him, a society won’t improve unless the political leaders follow the rules laid out in their party constitutions and the national constitution.

Justice Buba spoke in Abuja on Friday while delivering a keynote address at a function conference organised by a group, Tap Initiative, with support from the Open Society Funds.

He said, “The Nigerian judiciary, is undoubtedly being overworked by politicians to sustain democracy, it is very easy for an outsider not to see the ‘cow” on the head of the politician and political class, to quickly see the ‘lice’ on the head of the judiciary.

"No amount of judicial activism by the judges can better society if the political class is not willing to play by the rules of the game, according to the constitution of their parties enacted by them and given to themselves, a fotiori the constitution of Nigeria. ”

Buba urged politicians to focus on politics of development and advancement to avoid wasting resources on inter-party fights, election petitions, and dragging the judiciary into a conflict of “do or die.

"If we play politics of development, politics of advancement we will not waste resources into an inter-party fight, election petitions and by extension, dragging the judiciary in the mud of the conflict of do or die.

"We will be better off. our experience has shown that there are no other areas of litigation that drag the judiciary into conflict and try to splash mud on the judiciary than the political cases,” he stated

Buba lamented that politicians who are not qualified as judges attempt to influence the judiciary’s interpretation of the law.

He, however, urged the judiciary to appoint individuals who can challenge the actions of the other arms of government on the bench.

He added, “In the three arms of government, it is only the judiciary that has stringent conditions of qualification. Our judges must have a minimum of 10 years post-call to be appointed judges of a high court, while a school certificate whether pass or fail or its equivalent can attain offices in the other arms of government.

It is they who are in politics and try to dictate to the judiciary what the law is, and what should be done.

“It is in this regard, the members of the bar must jealously guard and guide their profession and ensure that the judiciary gets the right people on the bench who can call off the bluff of the other arms of government in checks and balances.”

The Executive Director of Tap Initiative, Martins Obono, said the primary objective of the conference was to facilitate a more in-depth analysis of the issue of judicial accountability.

He added that the overarching goal was to explore strategies for enhancing public trust in the judiciary.

Foreign AffairsIsrael Forces Fire On Gazans Rushing For Food Aid by Fareke(op): 11:12pm On Feb 29, 2024
By Donatus Anichukwueze

Israeli forces in war-torn Gaza opened fire on Palestinians scrambling for food aid in a chaotic melee on Thursday that the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory said killed more than 100 people.

The Israeli military said a “stampede” occurred when thousands of desperate Gazans surrounded a convoy of 38 aid trucks, leading to dozens of deaths and injuries, including some who were run over by the lorries.

An Israeli source acknowledged troops had opened fire on the crowd, believing it “posed a threat”.

The Gaza health ministry condemned what it called a “massacre” in Gaza City in which 112 people were killed and more than 750 others wounded.

The incident adds to a Palestinian death toll from the war which the ministry earlier Thursday said had topped 30,000, and dampens hopes a truce deal between Israel and Hamas militants could be just days away.

There were conflicting reports on what exactly unfolded in the hours before dawn.

A witness in Gaza City, declining to be named for safety reasons, said violence unfolded when thousands of people rushed towards aid trucks at the city’s western Nabulsi roundabout, and soldiers fired at the crowd “as people came too close” to tanks.

Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari said the military had fired “a few warning shots” to try to disperse a crowd that had ambushed the aid trucks.

When the crowd got too big, he said the convoy tried to retreat and “the unfortunate incident resulted in dozens of Gazans killed and injured”.

Aerial images released by the Israeli army showed what it said were scores of Gazans surrounding aid trucks in Gaza City.

Ali Awad Ashqir, who said he had gone to get some food for his starving family, told AFP he had been waiting for two hours when trucks began to arrive.

“The moment they arrived, the occupation army fired artillery shells and guns,” he said.

The army spokesman Hagari later denied Israeli forces carried out any shelling or strikes at the time.

‘Another day from hell’

US President Joe Biden said Washington was checking “two competing versions” of the incident, while a State Department spokesman said the United States had been in touch with Israel and was “pressing for answers” on what happened.

The shooting incident would complicate efforts to broker a truce, Biden said, later admitting that any deal was unlikely to happen by Monday — the timeline that he had predicted earlier this week.

The US president spoke with Qatari and Egyptian leaders in separate phone calls, the White House said, saying he discussed both the ceasefire and the “tragic and alarming” aid incident.

The UN Security Council will hold a closed-door emergency meeting on the incident on Thursday afternoon.

Saudi Arabia strongly condemned what it called the “targeting” of unarmed civilians, while Kuwait and the UAE also issued condemnations.

Qatar warned that Israel’s “disregard for Palestinian blood… (will) pave the way for an expanding cycle of violence”.

Italy called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to facilitate more humanitarian aid.

Looting of aid trucks has previously occurred in northern Gaza, where desperate residents have taken to eating animal fodder and even leaves to try to stave off starvation, as aid groups warn of looming famine after nearly five months of war.

The chief of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, said that no UN agency had been involved in Thursday’s aid delivery, and called it “another day from hell”.

Truce hopes
The war began on October 7 with an unprecedented Hamas attack on southern Israel that resulted in the deaths of around 1,160 people, mostly civilians, Israeli figures show.

Militants also took about 250 hostages, 130 of whom remain in Gaza, including 31 Israel says are presumed dead.

Israel’s retaliatory military campaign has killed 30,035 people, according to the Hamas-run Gaza’s health ministry.

Israel’s military says 242 soldiers have died in Gaza since ground operations began in late October.

Washington, a key ally of Israel, has been pushing for a reduction in civilian casualties and a ceasefire.

It has been working with mediators from Egypt and Qatar to seek a six-week pause in the war.

Negotiators had hoped a truce could begin by around March 10 or 11 when the Muslim holy month of Ramadan begins, depending on the lunar calendar.

The proposals reportedly include the release of some Israeli hostages held in Gaza by militants in exchange for hundreds of Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.

Short of the complete withdrawal Hamas has called for, a source from the group said the deal might see Israeli forces leave “cities and populated areas”, allowing the return of some displaced Palestinians and humanitarian relief.

humanitarian relief.

Fears of famine
The World Food Programme has said Israel has blocked access for aid deliveries — which Israeli officials have denied — and warned that if nothing changes, “a famine is imminent in northern Gaza”.

As fighting continued in Gaza, Muhammad Yassin, 35, battled to find flour in Zeitun.

“We have not eaten a loaf of bread for two months,” he said. “Our children are starving.”

In the south, nearly 1.5 million people trying to flee the fighting are now packed into Rafah city, also short of food, as Israel threatens to send in troops against Hamas fighters.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has come under increasing pressure to bring the remaining hostages home.

A group of 150 Israelis have started a four-day march from Reim, near the Gaza border, to Jerusalem, calling for the government to reach a deal.

Violence has also surged in the occupied West Bank, where two Israelis were killed on Thursday.

PoliticsTinubu Vows To Fight Smugglers, Corruption To Ruins by Fareke(op): 11:00pm On Feb 29, 2024
President Bola Tinubu on Thursday reiterated his administration’s efforts in tackling smuggling and corruption that have bedevilled the nation.

Tinubu, who spoke at the the commissioning of the Lagos Red Line Train on Thursday, said there is no going back on the economic policies of his government.

Last week, Vice President Kashim Shettima said the Federal Government uncovered 32 routes through which food items are smuggled out of Nigeria.

“I agree smugglers will fight back, corruption will fight back,” Tinubu said while addressing the menacing situation ubiquitous at the country’s borders. “We will fight them to ruins. Corruption will go away, (we will) save the money for you to educate our children, to pay for the healthcare system of our people, to pay for the modern transportation system that works for highest number of people, not those few smugglers,” Tinubu said.

‘No Going Back On Reforms’
During his swearing in last May, the President ended subsidy on petrol, a situation that has led to soaring cost of living that necessitated protests in several parts of the country.

However, the President, on Thursday, assured Nigerians that despite the economic situation in the country at the moment, he will fulfill his campaign promises to the people.

"We said we can do it, you believed in us. We said the people’s lives will end up being better, you believed in us. I could hear a lot of voices right now, I asked for this job, I cannot complain, it’s all about democracy.

“But this revolution that has started, this reform that is ongoing, we are not looking back. The engineering, the construction, the affirmation of our pledge to be loyal to our country. There is one thing I know is that there is a very bright light at the end of the tunnel,”
he stated.

PoliticsEconomic Hardship: I Take Full Responsibility - Tinubu by Fareke(op): 10:15pm On Feb 28, 2024
President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday, vowed that Nigeria would survive the current economic hardship even as he took full responsibility for the adverse outcomes of his policy reforms.

“Nigeria will survive the current economic challenges. There is light at the end of the tunnel. I requested the job, and I am not complaining about it. I take full responsibility,” said Tinubu when he addressed Afenifere leaders at the residence of Pa Reuben Fasoranti in Akure, Ondo State.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, stated this in a statement he signed on Wednesday titled, ‘President Tinubu: I take full responsibility for the nation; we are building an efficient Nigeria that is inclusive and fair to all Nigerians.”

Tinubu emphasised his commitment to leading Nigeria towards economic and social prosperity, saying, “Nigeria will survive the current economic challenges. There is light at the end of the tunnel. I requested the job, and I am not complaining about it. I take full responsibility.

"We are meeting our obligations to the international community. To lenders, we have not defaulted, and we are not going to default. We are navigating the twists and bends on the road to Nigeria’s prosperity.”

On reforming Nigeria, Tinubu said his task will be to ensure fiscal and true federalism, as well as the broad-based manifestation of the philosophy of “what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.”

He acknowledged the understanding and support of all Nigerians in the face of the harsh but temporary economic conditions, assuring them that their patience and perseverance will not be fruitless.

"The economic challenges we have endured since assuming office are not new to me. As the former Governor of Lagos State, I faced similar calls for my resignation.

“But, through perseverance, Lagos emerged as the fifth largest economy in the entire continent of Africa. We must manage this moment with wisdom and grow Nigeria responsibly.

" I campaigned for this office to serve Nigeria’s interests, and I was elected. Some said I would not last in the tribunal and came up with all sorts of predictions, but even when in court, I remained focused.

“We cannot allow Nigeria’s economy to be exploited. We cannot abandon our economy to marauders. I am determined to re-engineer our finances and curb selfish interests permanently,” he stated.

Speaking on behalf of Afenifere, Chief Olu Falae, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, who read Fasoranti’s address, commended Tinubu for his commitment to Nigeria’s progress and expressed support for his administration’s efforts.

“You have kept your word to return to this place where we all prayed for you, and this shows that you are a man of your word,” the elder statesman stated.

Fasoranti asked the President to be fair and courageous, declaring that such traits were the hallmark of the Afenifere family.

"Today, you are carrying our flag. We are noted for integrity, competence, fairness, and courage. Your performance so far has shown that you understand the full gravity of your mandate, which is to show the Nigerian people that a good government is possible,” he said.

Earlier, Tinubu paid a condolence visit to the family of the late former Governor of the state, Rotimi Akeredolu, and visited the palace of the Olowo of Owo Kingdom, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III.

Speaking at the palace of the monarch, he eulogised the late Akeredolu as a statesman and a distinguished legal luminary who served his people with unwavering dedication.

“We lost an illustrious son. Akeredolu was very close to me and an ally. He was a son of the soil, and I have come to pay homage,” the President said.

He extended his prayers for the good health, progress, and prosperity of the traditional ruler and the community and thanked the people of Owo for their support to the bereaved family.

Accompanied by the Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Tinubu also commiserated with the late governor’s widow, Betty, the children, and other family members.

Recently, human rights groups, the Joint Action Front and the Coalition for Revolution on Monday hit the streets of Lagos State to protest against the soaring price of food and the high cost of living in the country.

This protest was held against the warning issued by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, on Sunday.

According to him, the police are aware of the plan by some people to protest in the state and will ensure that necessary measures are put in place for the safety of the lives and property of Lagosians.

Before then, youths in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, on Monday, hit the street to protest the skyrocketing price of food and the state of the economy.

The PUNCH observed that protesters gathered around the Mokola area in the state wielding placards with various inscriptions such as ‘End food hike and inflation,’ ‘The poor are starving,’ and ‘Tinubu, don’t forget your promises,’ among others.

They were also chanting songs to show their grievances.
