Nine injured as Rivers PDP members clash over zoning of governorship seat September 24, 2014Premium Times No fewer than nine persons were injured when disagreement broke out at a meeting of the Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. The meeting was organised by some faithful of the opposition party in the state to discuss the zoning of the governorship position ahead of the February election. The incumbent, Rotimi Amaechi, an Ikwerre will round off his eight-year tenure in May next year. There have however been agitations for the governorship slot to be zoned elsewhere particularly the Kalabari area of the state while the supporters of the Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, who is also an Ikwerre are resisting the move. The meeting held at Delta Hotel in the Old Government Reservation Area, GRA, was temporarily disrupted when the minister’s supporters arrived the venue at about 12.30 pm. The opposition groups on the matter did not only engage in verbal punches, but also threw chairs at themselves. Police later arrived at the venue to restore peace. Some members, under the aegis of Concerned Rivers State PDP Stakeholders, at a press conference, demanded the dissolution of the state working committee of the party headed by Felix Obuah. Israel Owate, the spokesman of the group, said the state chapter, led by Mr. Obuah, had been docile and that the situation made some of the members of the party to defect to the All Progressives Congress, APC. “The Rivers State PDP has been run unconstitutionally by only a two-man executive, a situation which has made the party a limited liability company of those who claimed they incorporated it in the Abuja High Court,” Mr. Owate said. “The running of Rivers State PDP by a two-man executive has adversely affected and disrupted the functioning of the party at the ward, local government senatorial district and state levels. “The party does not have a proper membership register and does not have legitimate and properly constituted party officers at the various levels. This is because the PDP officers that defected with Governor Rotimi Amachi took with them PDP membership registers - See more at: https://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/168593-nine-injured-as-rivers-pdp-members-clash-over-zoning-of-governorship-seat.html#sthash.cREkuIus.dpuf |
Completion of East-West road in 2014 not realistic, says Minister September 23, 2014Premium Times east-west-road The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Steve Oru, on Monday in Abuja said the 2014 timeline for the completion of the East West road is not realistic because the project is poorly funded. Mr. Oru made this known when he met with the House of Representatives Committee on Niger Delta. He blamed the inability of the contractors handling the road project to complete the work as schedule on the rough terrain and effects of climate change. “Other reasons affecting projects executed by the ministry include poor funding and partial release of budgetary allocations,” the minister said. Mr. Oru said that so far, the N349 billion, 338 kilometre long road dual carriage project had achieved 79.42 per cent. He said that completion of some aspects of the construction of the bridge over River Nun at Kaiama might be extended to April 2015. Mr. Oru said that the same would go for final asphalt wearing course on one of the dual carriage ways between Kaiama and Mbiama. The minister recalled that the road was awarded in four sections to three contractors and scheduled for substantial completion by the end of 2014. He promised that progress of work would be much higher in the dry months ahead. “Out of the total length of 676 km (338X2) carriage way, about 535.13 km of earthworks, 470.32 km of asphaltic binder course and 398.36km of wearing course have been completed to date. “Also completed are 921 culverts out of the 1013 numbers. “Thirty seven bridges have been substantially completed out of the 41 bridges which include the second Imo River Bridge (850M long) and Okoso bridges (288m long) in the zone,”Mr. Oru said. He said that the ministry planned to extend the East-West road from Oron in Akwa Ibom to Calabar, Cross River state. He said this was to enhance the full potential of the entire East-West Corridor from Warri (Effurun) in Delta to Oron in Akwa Ibom. Earlier, the Chairman of the Committee, Rep. Warman Ogoriba (PDP Bayelsa), urged the ministry to put more pressure on the contractors to ensure speedy completion of the project. According to him, the East-West road is very important to the people of Niger Delta and indeed Nigerians. “That is why we are calling on the minister to tell us specifically when this road would be handed over to the Nigerian people. “We got few conflicting figures from the ministry on how much it has paid out to contractors. “I think it should reconcile its figures, although we are not saying that there is misappropriation of funds,” he stressed. Yoruba People Are The Most Sophisticated Nigerians, Says Ojo Madueke Nigeria Ambassador to Canada, Mr. Ojo Madueke, has described the Yoruba as Nigeria’s most sophisticated people. He was speaking to a gathering of Nigerians in Canada during an event organized by the Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG). Mr. Madueke, who was quick to point out that this conclusion does not contradict his “Igboness,” further expressed the view that Nigeria benefits the most when the Yoruba are fully involved in governance, adding that as a former officer of the Biafra army, he knew what he was talking about. Pius Adesanmi and Ojo Madueke Afenifere Renewal Group Seminar In Canada When the guest lecturer, Professor Jacob Olupona, asked why President Goodluck Jonathan did not include any Yoruba in the top seven most important cabinet positions, the former Foreign Minister returned to the podium to reiterate the sophistication of the Yoruba. He declared that the President has all the ethnic groups well represented in his cabinet, but would not elaborate. Mr. Madueke stated that the Igbos have been unduly persecuted over the 1966 coup by Nigerian army officers led by Major Kaduna Nzeogwu which led to the killing of Igbos, despite the fact that the coup-plotters did not consult with the Igbos before embarking on the killings of certain post-independence leaders. Mr. Madueke also said that he would not going to jump into President Jonathan’s rumored second term ambitions until the President has formerly declare it. In his lecture, Professor Olupona out several socio-cultural and economic measures taken by ancient Yorubas to attain economic sufficiency and social pride. For the record, he noted that the first Nigerian to teach at Harvard was Professor Kenneth Dike, an Igbo man, stating that he wanted to correct the impression that he (Olupona) was the first Nigerian to teach at the world-famous institution. Other speakers at the event included Omoyele Sowore of SaharaReporters, who urged the audience to ignore Mr. Madueke’s double-speak about the sophistication of the Yoruba. If the former PDP National Secretary’s remarks were more than mere flattery, Mr. Sowore stressed, he and his People’s Democratic Party (PDP), would not spend so much energy and effort to sponsor to power and prominence some of the worst Yorubas. TYFXsoMbVAE Ojo Madueke confronted with hard questions about President Umaru Yar'adua's health... Mr. Sowore recalled the recent elections in Osun and Ekiti States, where he claimed the candidates of the PDP were people with well-documented criminal track records. It would be recalled that in January 2010, during Mr. Madueke’s shift as Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, he had a falling-out with Mr. Sowore during a press conference at the United Nations in New York. Mr. Sowore had famously asked Mr. Madueke, who had confessed he had not spoken to the ailing President Umaru Yar’Adua for over 60 days, who he was getting his instructions from as he liberally travelled the world. |
Islamic Scholar Opens Doors To First Gay-Friendly Mosque In South Africa A muslim scholar has opened the doors to what is believed to be the world’s only gay-friendly mosque in Cape Town, South According to a BBC report, Dr. Taj Hargey, a professor at Oxford University’s Muslim Educational Centre has completed the ‘Open Mosque’ which welcomes not only gay Muslims, but also invites women to pray alongside men, and even to lead prayers. The opening of the mosque has been condemned by many in Cape Town’s Muslim community with one Muslim group unsuccessfully attempting to block the opening of the mosque. Dr. Hargey has said that he hoped the mosque would symbolize the open nature of Islam during the times of Prophet Muhammed, who is said to have allowed prominent women like one of his wives, Khadijah to lead prayers. "This idea of female invisibility is an innovation that came after Muhammad, unfortunately it has become entrenched," said Dr. Hargey. Although South Africa’s body for Islamic groups, the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC), says it is investigating members’ concerns of the Open Mosque, several members of Cape Town’s large Muslim community have openly criticized the mosque and even labeled the Dr. Hargey an “unbeliever”. Still, Dr. Hargey hopes the mosque will counter growing Islamic radicalism, and looks forward to the future. |

Shekau, Finally Dead? By PRNigeria Nigerian troops might have scored a strategic victory in the current battle against terrorists operating in the North East on September 17. During a desperate attempt to capture Konduga in their delusion to eventually marching on and capturing Maiduguri, the man who had been mimicking Late Abubakar Shekau in recent videos might have been finally killed. Abubakar Shekau According to senior military and intelligence sources, "it is getting more certain that the terrorists' commander who has been mimicking Shekau in those videos is the one killed in Konduga on September 17, 2014." The PRNigeria sources said the suspected demise of the Boko Haram leader is responsible for the scattering of the sect members in different independent locations in the neighbouring countries, especially in Cameroon noticed in recent days. The security sources did not deny the suspicion but cautioned that "the process of confirming that the dead body we have is the same as that character who has been posing as Shekau is ongoing. He is definitely a prominent terrorist commander. I don't want to say anything about this yet please." Another high ranking military source insisted that the resemblance is too striking to be a coincidence. They cited his facial marks, beards and teeth apart from the recovery by the Nigerian troops of some of the Armoured Vehicles and Hilux jeeps that had featured in previous videos of the prime suspect. The officers assured that the Defence Headquarters will soon address the nation after full investigation of their latest discovery. |

Why Are Some People More Prone To Mosquito Bites? image Don’t you hate it when it seems like you’re the only person in the room getting attacked by a ferocious swarm of mosquitos? There’s a popular theory going around that it might be because of your blood (You’re yummier than most!), but it turns out that it has more to do with a person’s scent rather than taste. Microbial ecologist Rob Knight explains that the bacteria on a person’s skin produce different chemicals, and some of these microbes smell more attractive to mosquitoes. The amount and kind of bacteria varies for each person. Although we share 99% of DNA with other humans, we only share 10% of these microbes with other people. To prove this, a study was conducted where 48 adult male respondents were asked to refrain from alcohol, garlic, and spicy food for two days. The researchers used a glass bed to obtain the scent from the men’s feet, and then the samples were exposed to mosquitoes. Nine men were found to be very attractive to mosquitoes, while seven were almost completely ignored. Those who were ignored by mosquitoes had a more varied bacteria colony on their skin. It was also noted that beer drinkers are more prone to mosquito bites. |

Open Letter To Ndigbo By Joe Igbokwe When has Igbo become so ethically compromised that they do must defend even thieves from Igboland? Are these Igbo not aware that such fight, like in the case of Stella Oduah not only ridicules the Igbo but belittles them before others? What happens to the sanctimonious resolve of our fore fathers never to get involved in war of blame? BY JOE IGBOKWE SEP 12, 2014 At the risk of being tagged once again as anti-Igbo by rabid, commissioned slave traders who see Ndigbo as easy wares to be marketed to their political masters, I write this open letter to my people. At the huge risk of being called names by my brothers and sisters, I boldly write this piece to my people. I have been called names in the past for speaking out and I may be wrong but please forgive me. I write because I know that a story that must be told never forgives silence. I write despite all odds because I know that when a writer is silent he or she is lying. I write because I want things to be done differently, because I know that the greatest part of hell will be reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of great moral crisis. I write knowing fully well that I am not the best God ever created and therefore mine cannot be the last word. Two incidents involving Mrs. Stella Oduah, who was removed as a Minister for corruption, and General Ihejirika, who just retired from the Nigerian Army necessitated this open letter. Sacked aviation minister Stella Oduah and former COAS General Ihejirika Mrs. Stella Oduah was removed as a Minister of Aviation for issues bordering on corruption. She was accused of financial recklessness. When the lid was blown open, our people went to town to defend Mrs Stella Oduah. All Igbo organizations went to town with the chorus "LEAVE STELLA ODUAH ALONE". The shouts came from our people all over the world and it was loud enough and at best, deafening. When Mrs. Stella Oduah was eventually eased out by the presidency, one thought our people will learn the lesson but not Igbo. Our leaders went to town with a project to honour Mrs. Stella Oduah and others with awards in Lagos. In preparation for the ceremony one of the leaders spoke to the press. Hear him “we are honouring our own Mrs. Stella Oduah to show the world that even when Nigeria mocks our brightest and best for doing a good job at the Aviation Industry, we must tell the world that we love and celebrate our own.” She was given an instant title of Ada Igbo. As I write this, billboards are at strategic locations in Igboland, celebrating her as ADA IGBO. Now enter General Ihejirika, the former Chief of Army Staff. General Ihejirika just retired from the Army after serving for more than three decades. General Ihejirika is now eyeing the governorship seat in Abia State on the platform of PDP just few months after pulling out of the Nigerian Army. But just recently an Australian peace negotiator, Stephen Davis, who was allegedly contracted by the federal government and who spent four months in Nigeria negotiating with Boko Haram to get the kidnapped Chibok girls out, told the world that the former Governor of Borno State Ali Modu Sheriff and Ihejirika have hands in sponsoring Boko Haram. The moment Stephen Davis' statement hit the Nigerian public space, hell was let loose once again. Our people went to town with the usual mantra: "LEAVE IHEJIRIKA ALONE". Almost all the Igbo organizations have issued press statements suggesting that General Ihejirika is now being persecuted for staking his life to fight Boko Haram for Nigeria. Again the noise was so loud and deafening. According to our people Ihejirika is being persecuted because he is Igbo. Even Igbo World Assembly (IWA) in far away United States was not left out in the drama. In the social media it is Igbo and other Nigerians. Now the questions are: do we need to defend Mrs. Stella Oduah and General Ihejirika? Are they not old enough or competent enough to defend themselves? Were our people with them when they were serving? Can we swear we know them very well to continue this noise? Do we really know the character of these persons? Why this prebendal politics? If we continue to defend our tribes only, who will then defend Nigeria? Who is working for Nigeria if I may ask? Is it not bad behaviour for Igbo to continue to defend what they know nothing about? Are we not making ourselves objects of ridicule in the eyes of other Nigerians? When we pour invectives on other Nigerians or people who are different from us are we not endangering the lives and businesses of Ndigbo scattered all over Nigerians? Have we forgotten that our people are the most mobile in Nigeria? Do we know how other Nigerians rate us in this predictable primitive defense? Do we consider the feelings of other Nigerians? What signals are we sending out with this improper behaviour? Don’t we have men and women who will say enough is enough in this madness of defending the indefensible? We know Igbo history, philosophy and sociology, when did it tolerate blind and unquestionable defence of someone who might have compromised his or herself while in office? When has Igbo become so ethically compromised that they do must defend even thieves from Igboland? Are these Igbo not aware that such fight, like in the case of Stella Oduah not only ridicules the Igbo but belittles them before others? What happens to the sanctimonious resolve of our fore fathers never to get involved in war of blame? When Professor Grace Grange, IG Tafa Balogun, and Speaker Patricia Etteh, were removed for corruption, did the Yoruba resort to this kind of blackmail? What is the North saying about Ali Modu Sherrif, the former Governor of Borno State implicated in Boko Haram insurgency with Ihejirika? These are just few cases I wanted to mention for emphasis. To the best of my knowledge I do not think our people are playing better politics in Nigeria now. I do not think the way we are going now will help us politically. I do not think other Nigerians will trust us if we continue this way. I have slim hope that other Nigerians will take serious in matters of Nigerian politics. I am not led to believe that we are getting it right, rather I think we are going the wrong way. For emphasis, Ihejirika may be guilty or not but it is his to prove. I am not saying he is guilty for I do not know the details. He doesn’t need all the cahoots of persuaders now striving to show their support for him to do so. In every sane society, security is a complicated issue and every person within that society, even the president, is a suspect until proven otherwise. The best for Ihejirika is to step out and put a solid defence and shame his accusers. If he believes he will get the mob to extricate him, he is making a mistake and getting himself indicted by history and that is far more dangerous for him. I suggest that Igbo should stop creating enemies for itself in Nigeria. I suggest that Igbo should rise above ethnic preoccupation to help move Nigeria forward. If we are still one Nigeria, Igbo should consider the feelings of other Nigerians. This defeatism attitude must give way to politics of ideas. This persecution complex must stop. This leadership complex must seize to exist. Joe Igbokwe. Lagos |
EXCLUSIVE: Secret Intelligence Report links ex-Governor Sheriff, Chad President to Boko Haram sponsorship New facts showing stronger links between former governor of Borno state, Ali Modu Sheriff, and the Boko Haram sect has emerged, supporting claims the ex-governor is a major financier of the terrorist sect. Intelligence insights obtained by PREMIUM TIMES in Maiduguri, Damaturu, and Abuja show dated communications between field officers and the velvet ranks of Nigeria’s military chronicling Mr. Sheriff’s involvement in promoting the growth of the sect. The communications painted a picture of what appears to be a powerful regional support structure involving the Chadian president, Nigerian officials and Niger Republic, and spearheaded by Mr. Sheriff whom the intelligence presents as a powerful figure within this circle. Strong evidence indicates that the Nigerian government received official actionable intelligence about Mr. Sheriff’s links to Boko Haram as far back as 2011 but has, curiously, ignored all warnings and nudges to act to stop the Boko Haram call him in for interrogation. Mr. Sheriff has long been suspected of masterminding the Boko Haram sect, but the documents sighted by this newspaper offers deeper understanding into how Mr. Sheriff allegedly finances the deadly sect and his probable motivations. When Sheriff visits Abeche Nourished by deep and impeccable sources from members of the Chadian Army, Nigerian intelligence experts had arrived at fairly certain conclusions that Mr. Sheriff was actively involved in the recruitment, training and deployment of Boko Haram members. “…members of Boko Haram sect are sometimes kept in Abeche region in Chad and trained before being dispersed. This happens usually when Mr. Sheriff visits Abeche,” a 2011 memo from field officers in N’djamena, the capital of Chad, read. When Mr. Sheriff visits Abeche for these activities, he lodges in Chadian Presidential Guest House in Abeche, and is provided security by the Chadian government, the intelligence communications claim. Mr. Sheriff is a close friend of the Chadian president, Idris Deby. In 2011, during the Chadian presidential elections, Mr. Sheriff supported the Chadian president with 35 vehicles, for security, and is believed to have bankrolled Mr. Deby’s re-election. Nigerian defence and intelligence community members typically describe Mr. Sheriff as a gun runner in their many communications, and they often speak in conviction that his weapons find their way into Nigeria through Niger Republic into Yobe state. Yobe is Boko Haram’s stronghold and has suffered heavy casualties in magnitudes only second to Borno. Money, Politics and Power Back in August 2011, intelligence officials were characterising Mr. Sheriff’s motivations for sponsoring Boko Haram as similar to a certain “3rd generation South South governor,” with the aim of covering up financial irregularities he might have committed as governor of Borno state, as well as propagate a stay-put in office strategy by suppressing the opposition. The officials suggest that Mr. Sheriff did not create the sect but was actively using the “monster” and could be sponsoring the sect as a way of protecting himself from the sect members who were “calling for his head” at the time. “One way of reclaiming the lost loyalty of the sect therefore, was sponsorship of their cause,” intelligence officials were telling their principals. Mr. Sheriff was not reachable for his comments. A former commissioner under his administration as governor of Borno state who also speaks for him, Inuwa Bwala, told PREMIUM TIMES Mr. Sheriff was outside the country and could not respond to enquiries. Both the Nigerian defence headquarters and the Nigerian government also declined to comment on this intelligence. Phone calls were not answered, and text messages were not replied to. Chadian President Connection An Australian negotiator, Stephen Davis, recently named Mr. Sheriff, alongside former Nigerian Army Chief, Azubuike Ihejirika, as sponsors of the Boko Haram sect, quoting the sect’s leadership. Nigeria’s defence intelligence was silent on the role of Mr. Ihejirika in promoting the deadly sect whose bloody campaign have killed up to 5000 Nigerians and left many homeless, broken and internally displaced, but names the Chadian president, Mr. Deby, as a new dimension to the Boko Haram sponsorship dynamics. In 2011, a strong Boko Haram army was also beneficial to the Chadian president, as it provided a “ready army and possible refuge” for a president that was facing growing distrust from his legitimate army, Nigerian intelligence officials claimed. The Chadian government support for the sect was made majorly through his friendship with Mr. Sheriff and at the expense of his country’s relationship with Nigeria, the report said. Transformed sect Violence by the Boko Haram sect, which had only religious interest in the past, is traceable to the five days of clashes in July 2009, between the group and members of the security forces in Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, and Kano states that left more than 800 people dead, including at least 30 police officers. The police summarily executed the captured Boko Haram leader, Mohammed Yusuf, along with several dozen of his followers in front of the police headquarters in Maiduguri. Dozens of its members were also arrested. Boko Haram frequently said its attacks on the government, especially the police, are in revenge for these killings and an attempt to set free members incarcerated by the police. Recently, the ideology behind Boko Haram attacks got more confusing with increasing attacks on schools, media houses and almost any soft target with wide media reach. The group has gotten bolder by the day and has shown interest in capturing and occupying cities it calls its Caliphates. The sect has overrun towns and villages, including Mubi, Michika, Bazza, Gulak, Gwoza, Bama, Gamboru and Ngala in Adamawa and Borno states. Ngala is the home place Mr. Sheriff - See more at: https://www.premiumtimesng.com/headlines/168053-exclusive-secret-intelligence-report-links-ex-governor-sheriff-chad-president-to-boko-haram-sponsorship.html#sthash.BUyNwfkq.dpuf |

Crude Oil Theft: PDP Governorship Candidate Jarrett Tenebe Arrested, Implicates Jonathan’s Former Chief of Staff, Anenih, And Petroleum Minister Jarrett Tenebe, a Peoples democratic Party gubernatorial candidate and a politically well-connected oil thief arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) reportedly shocked investigators by revealing that he received cover from several senior government officials and top politicians, including Mike Oghiadomhe, a former Chief of Staff to President Goodluck Jonathan, Tony Anenih, chair of the board of trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison Madueke. BY SAHARAREPORTERS, NEW YORKSEP 11, 2014 Jarrett Tenebe, a Peoples democratic Party gubernatorial candidate and a politically well-connected oil thief arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) reportedly shocked investigators by revealing that he received cover from several senior government officials and top politicians, including Mike Oghiadomhe, a former Chief of Staff to President Goodluck Jonathan, Tony Anenih, chair of the board of trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison Madueke. Jarrett Tenebe The EFCC was still holding Mr. Tenebe today after arresting him last week for alleged theft of massive amounts of crude oil. An EFCC source disclosed that Mr. Tenebe, who hails from Edo State, told investigators that his powerful political patrons and protectors enabled him to carry out lucrative crude oil theft from Nigeria under the guise of evacuating stolen crude on behalf of the federal government. Among the political patrons are Ms. Alison-Madueke, Mr. Oghiadomhe, Mr. Anenih, a close confidant of President Jonathan, and James Jephthah. The stolen crude oil was reportedly sold in Ghana. The suspect came under renewed scrutiny after US investigators informed Nigeria’s law enforcement authorities that several vessels linked to Mr. Tenebe’s Fenix Impex Nigeria Limited were involved in the ferrying of stolen crude from Nigeria to Ghana via the Saltpond oil platform in the West African country. Our EFCC source disclosed that the anti-corruption agency was able to arrest Mr. Tenebe only because US investigators were involved. The source added that, since the suspect’s arrest last week, the EFCC had been under intense pressure from several quarters to muddle up the case in order to spring the suspect free. Our sources revealed that this is the second time Mr. Tenebe and his main collaborator have been in trouble this year. Earlier this year, the suspect and Peter Omoh Dunia (aka Peter Black), a close political associate of Tony Anenih in Edo state, were also arrested, but they were able to pull political strings that ensured their release without prosecution. In March 2014, Nigerian soldiers, who were under the command of Brigadier General Azinta, had arrested Mr. Tenebe and Mr. Dunia. The two men’s arrest came after soldiers found fraudulent crude oil evacuation contracts in their possession. One Rear Admiral Austin Oyagha of the Nigerian Navy reportedly signed the evacuation documents on behalf of the Nigerian navy. Following their arrest by the soldiers in Benin City, Mr. Tenebe and Mr. Dunia were caught red handed when they tried to bribe Brigadier General Azinta, the brigade commander of the Nigerian Army in Benin. Both men were in possession of $65,000, which was meant to bribe General Azinta. Our EFCC source disclosed that the brigade commander reportedly played along with his would-be bribers for some days before arranging their arrest. The army officer handed over the bribe money to investigators as evidence against the two suspects. However, the brigade commander was told that the suspects would be moved to Bayelsa State and handed over to the Joint Task Force (JTF). The move was part of a design to ensure their smooth release without prosecution. One of our sources told SaharaReporters that James Jephthah (aka Octopus), a very close friend of President Goodluck Jonathan, used his access to Aso Rock to obtain approval for the transfer of the case to Bayelsa where he eventually influenced the JTF to release Mr. Tenebe. The EFCC officially declined to comment on the ongoing investigation of the Saltpond scam. However, a top official of the agency disclosed that the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, had ordered the agency not to take any action until her return to Abuja. Ms. Alison-Madueke is currently on a short vacation in the UK while awaiting the completion of the multi-million dollar renovation of her Abuja mansion. A source at the EFCC told SaharaReporters that Mr. Tenebe’s political contacts had helped him to get appointed as an agent who sells crude oil seized from illegal marketers. The source added, however, that Mr. Tenebe’s politically powerful sponsors also arranged for the suspect to lift additional hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil, which he sold at great profit to different European oil dealers using Ghana as the point of sale. |

Nuhu Ribadu He made the remark in Kano while receiving merit awards from two groups, APC Kwankwasiyya Amana, Bauchi state chapter; and Nigeria 774 Kwankwasiyya Merger: Kwankwaso for President. “After he left the APC for the PDP, his new party did not find him worthy of its gubernatorial ticket. I am sure the PDP stakeholders in Adamawa are now laughing at him. He appealed to them to pay back good for good by dumping the PDP and voting for the APC which is ready to bring about positive and realistic changes in the whole country. “Anybody who voted for PDP, which within five years could not lead the nation rightly has deceived himself,” lamented the governor, pointing out that APC has come up with a credible candidate in person of Senator Muhammad Jibrila Bindaw who can salvage Adamawa state. He alleged that the Adamawa state PDP chose a candidate whom most of their supporters see as incompetent, hoping that people in the state should opt for APC, describing it as the best party in Nigeria. Earlier, the chairmen of the NGOs Murtala Abdullahi Dass and Habu Ibrahim Fagge appealed to Kwankwaso to enter the race for the presidency come 2015, assuring him they will mobilize Nigerians to support him. Meanwhile, Governor Kwankwaso has thanked the state APC stakeholders’ effort in mobilizing people across the nation to support his presidential aspiration in the 2015 general election. Meeting with them at the Kano Government House also on Wednesday, the governor said that most of the people he met at the APC Northwest rally in Sokoto told him that the message has reached them and they are in support of the aspiration. He therefore urged the stakeholders to continue to enlighten Nigerians until the APC wins the 2015 general elections. He also reiterated that he's still consulting on the 2015 presidential contest and will make his decision known to the general public very soon. |
himkers: Misplaced priority. When there re millions of almajiris to enroll in school, kwankwasiya is there building flyovers. I don't knw why all APC governors don't get their priorities right.....The other time, al-makura wanted to build an international cargo airport in a state that is as poor as TChad, who will use the airport if he had built it??There are ONLY 2 states with complete free education in NIgeria (primary schl to university), Kano is one! What do you then call misplaced priorities? When will the priorities be well placed?- when he comes to your state! |
Abia State Has Over 1000 Traditional Rulers, Claims Obi of Onitsha In his remarks, the Obi of Onitsha traced the history and changing status of traditional rulers in Nigeria from pre-colonial era to the present. He stated that traditional rulers were marginalized by the colonial power, the political and military elite until the 1999 constitution of Nigeria restored relevance to traditional institution. BY SAHARA REPORTERSSEP 09, 2014 The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, has criticized the proliferation of the traditional institutions in most parts of Eastern Nigeria. He made the observation yesterday during the presentation of his books at Hilton Woodcliff Lake in New Jersey, USA. He said that Abia state with a population of 4.5 million people now has over 1000 traditional rulers, noting that the South East has over half of all the traditional rulers in Nigeria. In his remarks, the Obi of Onitsha traced the history and changing status of traditional rulers in Nigeria from pre-colonial era to the present. He stated that traditional rulers were marginalized by the colonial power, the political and military elite until the 1999 constitution of Nigeria restored relevance to traditional institution. As a result of the restoration, he noted that the traditional institution has begun to attract the best and the brightest. “They have come back to give something back to the community that gave them their beginning,” he said. Igwe Achebe who heads the Anambra State Council of Traditional Rulers pondered loud how to maintain the relevance of the traditional institution and make sure it survives in a changing 21st century world without losing its distinguished identity. “How can we run fast enough to stand still? How do we drive the traditional society while modernity is happening?” he asked. Obi Of Onitsha Hosts Book Launch The Stanford and Columbia universities-trained monarch outlined several reforms he has brought to Onitsha since he ascended the throne some 12 years ago. Amongst the reforms are that funeral rites in Onitsha are now completed within twelve hours, the Onitsha traditional justice system is now recognized by the Supreme Court of Nigeria, and the traditional institution is now in dialogue with the churches to reinterpret and encourage a better understanding of Onitsha tradition. He said that his mission has been to bring modern management practices to community governance. “We do small things at Onitsha leaving big things to the government,” he said. The former top executive of Shell Petroleum said that he has established a trust, the Onitsha Advancement Foundation, to help accomplish the goals in his blueprint and it is to the foundation that all the proceeds of the books will go. Speaking at the event, the managing director of Diamond Bank, Dr. Alex Otti, commended the Onitsha monarch for his commitment in the service of the people of his kingdom. “There are not so many Igbo communities today that present their best as traditional rulers,” said Otti. He told the gathering that Diamond Bank has been in the business of supporting arts and culture long before the bank decided to back the publication of these books, one of which chronicled ten years of Igwe Achebe’s stay on the throne and the other which highlighted Onitsha at the millennium. Dr. Otti called Igwe Achebe an erudite, open-minded, and transparent chairman of Diamond Bank. “It’s impossible to achieve what we have achieved with a different chairman.” Reviewer of the book, Dr. Apollos Nwauwa called the books, “a scholarly celebration of his majesty’s 10 years anniversary.” He described Igwe Achebe as “the intellectual voice of traditional institutions in the country.” One of the books is a collection of 30-essays written by Onitsha and non-Onitsha people about Onitsha. A box-set of the two books cost $450. All the copies brought to the event were sold out. In his vote of thanks, the organizer of the book launch and a school mate of the Igwe, renowned plastic surgeon, Dr. Ferdinand Ofodile, reaffirmed the testimonies of the evening that traditional rulers can make a difference in the lives of the people. President Jonathan "Meeting Haram" With Alleged Boko Haram Financier, Former Borno Gov. Ali Modu Sheriff In Chad The Commander-In-Chief of Nigeria's Armed Forces, President Goodluck Jonathan met up with former Borno state, Governor Ali Modu Sheriff in Chad yesterday. The meeting and the attendant pleasantry has shocked many observers, recently an Australian negotiator; Stephen Davis revealed that Mr.riff is one of the key sponsors of the deadly Boko Haram sect currently ravaging Nigeria. In addition, Nigeria secret police (SSS) declared last week that Mr. Sheriff is now under investigations for Allegedly Sponsoring Boko Haram. . https://bdsmovement.net/sites/default/files/styles/normal_medium/public/TCHAD%206.jpg?itok=Xtx1c8ZG http:///meetingtharambetweenGEJandBokoharam |
Military Sources Reveal Some Alleged Boko Haram Activities Of Ex- COAS Azubuike Ihejirika The army under General Azubuike Ihejirika allowed Boko haram to regroup deliberately in the Sambisa. Last year when SoE was declared, Boko haram was on the run and the villagers of the villages ravaged by Boko haram today were themselves single handedly apprehending Boko haram fighters in the bushes. Victory was at hand for Nigeria as the Boko haram fighters were roaming the bushes without ammo, food or water. The Civilian JTF, CJTF under the leadership of soldiers of the JTF like colonel Hassan, Shamaki and the once dreaded Sagir Musa and one Sangami (not real name), coordinated and directed the CJTF to the villages and the surrounding bushes. The CJTF and the JTF recorded success like never before on the war on terror. This was the time the original Shekau was killed; August of 2013. But then General Ihejirika suddenly and surprisingly disbanded the JTF and introduced the so called 7 division that was a deliberate sabotage of the success from day one. The army after the creation of 7 division, cut down the powers of the CJTF to go to the villages or to Boko haram camps on patrol. For the CJTF to do so, they were now made to have to apply in writing to the authorities. The 7 division became an army that was stationary instead of an army that took proactive measures in combat. This allowed Boko Haram to regroup and survive to reign more terror on the people. It was evident the army chief wanted to preserve Boko haram and not complete their defeat. We are convinced they make money form the continuous war on terror in the north. The people suspected a foul play when the heroes of the people in the army that worked with the CJTF were all deployed out of the state. Most of them were framed as members of the Boko haram and they quietly left. The intelligence officers were all transferred out of the state. The new GOC deployed to Borno was a right hand man of Ali Modu Sheriff. It was even said that Sheriff actually worked for the man to be deployed to Borno. |

porka: Why do Nigerians start their public response with this statement? You got all Wrong, friend. ''ORDINARILY" like other words cannot be pinned down to your primary or elementary meanings. Words could have denotative or connotative meaning. Denotation is when you mean what you say, literally. Connotation is created when you mean something else, something that might be initially hidden. The connotative meaning of a word is based on implication, or shared emotional association with a word. IN THIS CONTEXT, 'ORDINARILY' is connotatively means any or all of the following: usually, normally, as a rule, generally, as a general rule, in general, in the general run of things, for the most part, by and large, mainly, mostly, most of the time, customarily, typically, habitually, commonly, routinely Example; He ordinarily worked in Abuja, but sleeps in Lagos weekend So, all Nigerians including Tinubu who 'start their public response with this statement', have gone steps ahead in use of English language. |

Such people are not noisy or able to gain attention by being loud, I believe my role is to do all I can to project them. This surely can't be faulted factually by his greatest critics. Sirniyeh: When you dont know the purpose of a thing, abuse is inevitable! |
The former minister particularly blamed Mr. Tinubu for frustrating his ambition to become the party’s national chairman. Read Mr. Ikimi’s allegations here. Mr. Tinubu has now responded, describing Mr. Ikimi as a man with an awful past who could not be trusted with the leadership of the party. Tinubu Media Office Lagos-Nigeria, August 31st, 2014 Reply to Chief Tom Ikimi. I ordinarily would not have responded to Tom Ikimi’s lengthy chronicle of falsehoods, cheap blackmail and abuse. My only reason for this response is that I know Tom Ikimi’s style. He subscribes to the view that no matter how unbelievable a lie may sound if you brazenly assert it and repeat it often enough you may persuade many that it is in fact true. I have seen Ikimi perpetrate this deviousness in his years in public life. 1. Regarding Ikimi’s bid for the Chairmanship of the Party. It was clear to practically everyone who had the interest of the party at heart that we simply could not have a man of Tom Ikimi’s antecedents as Chair of the party. As chairman of the NRC, one of the only two political parties in the country under the military transition programme, Tom Ikimi not only connived with the then military regime to annul the elections, terminate the democratic process and sell off his party. He became Abacha’s foreign minister, convincing the world that heinous state murders like the hanging of Ken Saro Wiwa were just acts! If Ikimi were the Chair of APC the party would have to sleep with both eyes open lest its chairman sell off the party before day break .No matter what anyone may say about me it is unlikely that I can be accused of supporting incompetent or morally light-weight individuals for important political positions. My philosophy is to put the best forward, men and women of competence and integrity, who can stand up to us politicians to challenge us and say no when necessary. Such people are not noisy or able to gain attention by being loud, I believe my role is to do all I can to project them. Who in their right mind would compare the highly principled Chief Bisi Akande, or Chief Oyegun with a Tom Ikimi? Either of these two men are known for their no-nonsense styles, not once in their careers would you hear that they betrayed a cause or were anybody’s stooge. 2. Ikimi also concocts a story of a meeting he claims I had with Deziani on the Oando/ ConocoPhillips transaction on the eve of the APC Convention. Only a Tom Ikimi can come up with the absurd falsehood that on the eve of the APC Convention when I was in crucial meetings practically round the clock I was meeting with the Minister for Petroleum! What exactly would have been the point of such a meeting especially on the eve of the Convention? Was it to prevent Tom Ikimi from emerging as Chairman of the APC? To what end? Of what value would it be to anyone except Ikimi himself? Besides if this was so why he is back to the same party that purportedly planned his down fall? What is the Oando/ConocoPhillips transaction anyway? For those who do not know this is a private sale of the assets of ConocoPhillips to Oando. It was not patronage of any kind from the Federal government. The Federal government’s involvement was merely to formally consent to the sale. I was not involved and I have never been involved in any of Oando’s transactions. Typically he plays on the fact that Wale Tinubu of Oando is my nephew. Oando has been thoroughly investigated by South African and British authorities in the past 5 years as part of the process of listing the company on the stock exchanges of those countries. Those rigorous and comprehensive investigations conducted by the governments and risk control investigators are to discover the actual ownership of shares in the company. Politically exposed persons like myself are prime targets for those investigations. All these investigations have shown that I have no investments in Oando. My public position on the entire transaction is that if an indigenous Nigerian oil and gas entity run by young serious minded Nigerians raise money transparently in the international capital markets to purchase private assets of a multi-national the Federal government ought to give its consent. That it took so long is shameful. The Conoco/Phillips transaction was a $1.7 billion dollars investment in Nigeria that would create more jobs, witness the establishment of allied industries and make the Nigerian Economy more attractive. I would have been extremely proud to have made such a transaction possible. 3. Regarding the nonsense about selling out on Ribadu. I think common sense should dictate that if ever such a deal were reached we would have had to inform our members in all the States. How could that have been done secretly? How do you tell hundreds of thousands of people not to vote for your own party without it becoming public knowledge? At the formation of the APC, a crucial debate ensued about what to do about persons like Ikimi who had done awful things in the past, but who were now minded to align with the progressive tendency in Nigerian politics. Should we forever blacklist them? This would have been the easiest route, but it would have kept rancour alive. It would have made us slaves to the bleakest chapters of our past. Instead we opted to extend the hand of brotherhood, reconcile and put the past behind us. This would enable a broader political consensus, while also giving the likes of Ikimi an opportunity to atone for their grievous wrongs against the people and be rehabilitated. We recognized that many leading Nigerians had committed acts of shame. Some for private profit, others who were otherwise decent people who had become prisoners to a terrible system. Not surprisingly, Ikimi acting true to type abuse that magnanimity. He was never sincerely committed to the party. He was always playing out a PDP script. He only wanted the chairmanship of the party as a bargaining chip for negotiations with his benefactors. His defection purportedly on account of the loss of the chairmanship of the party is a mere subterfuge, once his ploy failed he had no other objective within the party, I knew he would go back to his sponsors. He is back in the company he deserves. And APC is better for it. -Bola Ahmed Tinubu - See more at: https://www.premiumtimesng.com/featured-news/167633-tinubu-tears-apart-ikimi-says-hes-a-devious-man-with-an-awful-past.html#sthash.hlHzkt6c.dpuf |
