Dickson, Dame Patience Jonathan's rift deepens,First Lady resigns appointment as Bayelsa super Perm Sec The First Lady, wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Dame Patience, has resigned her appointment as a “Super” Permanent Secretary in the Bayelsa State Civil Service. It was gathered that the resignation followed alleged final breakdown in relationship between the First Lady and the Governor of the state, Mr. Seriake Dickson. Dickson had in July 2012, five months after his inauguration appointed Patience Jonathan, as one of the 17 new permanent secretaries in the state civil service. Dickson said the appointment of the First Lady as a permanent secretary was based on the power conferred on him by Section 203 of the constitution. He further said it was in recognition of her services to the state and nation adding that she was a directorate level officer in the civil service. Sources from the Ministry of Education said the 57-year-old Patience Jonathan left the service voluntarily. One of the sources who pleaded anonymity said the First Lady in her letter of resignation opted for voluntary retirement. He said the ministry had computed and finalised her terminal benefits already. When asked the total amount of her terminal benefits, he said: “Well I don’t know. All I can tell you is that everything has been processed. “The whole thing is political. It appears Madam Peace is not happy with the governor. With her resignation, the battle line has been drawn. “I feel the President’s wife resigned to enable her to have the moral right to slug it out with Dickson ahead of the governorship poll in the state. Let no one deceive you, the whole thing is politics. After all, she is 57 and the retirement age is 60.” The wife of the President has a National Certificate of Education in Mathematics/Biology, which she obtained in 1989 from the Rivers State College of Education. She also has a degree in Biology and Psychology (Education) from the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State. When contacted, Chief Salo Adikumo, who resigned during the week as Commissioner for Education, said he was no longer the commissioner. He said: “I resigned recently as commissioner to enable me to pursue my political ambition. Please direct all your enquiries to the Ministry, ” he said. But, a senior official of the ministry confirmed the development and said it was true the First Lady resigned. The official, who pleaded anonymity for fear of victimisation, dismissed political reasons in her resignation. He said: “I can say Dame Patience Jonathan has voluntarily retired. But whether there is political undertone in her resignation, I cannot say. “I think the First Lady felt that her continued stay as Permanent Secretary will be depriving others. Now that she has thrown in the towel, it will afford others the opportunity to take her position. “Already, in accordance with the civil service rules, we have prepared all her entitlements. Whatever is due her will be given to her. She will also be receiving her pension.” |

Ebola: Jonathan Welcomes WHO’s Declaration; Hails Fashola, Amaechi October 20, 2014Premium Times President Goodluck Jonathan has welcomed the declaration by the World Health Organisation, WHO, on Monday that Nigeria is now officially Ebola-free after 42 days without any incidence of the virus. A statement by a presidential spokesman, Rueben Abati, said Mr. Jonathan dedicated the certification to the many “patriotic health workers, volunteers and ordinary Nigerians who worked tirelessly, some of them paying the ultimate price, to stop the deadly virus in its track after it entered the country in July this year”. The president also praised the state governments and other bodies involved the fight against the dreaded virus. The Ebola Virus Disease was imported into Nigeria in July by a Liberian-American man, Patrick Sawyer, who travelled from Monrovia through Lome, Togo, to Lagos. The virus later spread to Rivers State. Nigeria recorded 19 Ebola cases, and seven deaths. “The president seizes this opportunity to also reiterate his appreciation of the contributions of state governments, WHO and other international health organisations, relatives of infected persons and other Nigerians who either courageously underwent the rigours of being quarantined or complied with all directives issued by health authorities to defeat the virus. Mr. Jonathan said Nigeria’s globally-acclaimed success against Ebola is a testimony to what Nigerians can achieve if they set aside their differences and work together. “As the nation applauds the success of its collective effort to stop the transmission of the Ebola Virus within Nigeria however, the President warns that the entire country must remain fully alert and vigilant against the re-entry of the virus,” he was quoted as saying. The statement said Mr. Jonathan agreed with WHO that while Nigeria has won a battle against Ebola, the war will only truly end when West Africa, Africa and the world are declared free of Ebola” the statement read in part. “The President has consequently directs that all the anti-Ebola measures taken after the entry of the virus into the country should remain in place and that health officials should continue to actively screen persons entering the country through its air, land and sea borders for any sign of the virus,” the statement said. “He also urges all Nigerians to continue to follow the anti-Ebola advisories on sanitation and personal hygiene issued by Federal and State Health authorities.” |

BREAKING: Nigerian military, Boko Haram agree immediate ceasefire October 17, 2014Premium Times PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan The Nigerian military and extremist sect, Boko Haram, have reached an immediate ceasefire, the Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh, said Friday. There were reports the two sides were having talks over the release of more than 200 schoolgirls abducted by the group April 14. Details of the ceasefire deal is still sketchy but Mr. Badeh has ordered all field officers to comply with the agreement. Boko Haram has sacked several communities in north east Nigeria and has killed more than 13,000 deaths in a five-year long bloody campaign. More Details soon… Meanwhile find our initial report about the negotiation that culminated in the ceasefire below. The Nigerian government and the extremist Boko Haram sect have begun fresh negotiation over the release of the more than 200 girls abducted by the sect from their school dormitories in Chibok, Borno state, six months ago, the Voice of America is reporting. The report said the talks are also aimed at hammering out a cease-fire deal between Nigerian security forces and Boko Haram. The VOA quoted an unnamed adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan and Danladi Ahmadu, a man calling himself the secretary-general of Boko Haram, as saying the talks were going on in Saudi Arabia, “aided by high level officials from Chad and Cameroon”. Mr. Ahmadu, reportedly said the girls are “in good condition and unharmed.” He would however “not elaborate on the conditions under which the girls would be freed. The Saudi Arabian government is not involved in the negotiations, the VOA said. Nigeria’s Channels TV later reported the Principal Private Secretary to the President, Hassan Tukur, as confirming the negotiation. Mr. Tukur, said to have spoken with the Voice of America Hausa service, was quoted as saying the Nigerian government “met with Chadian Government officials as well as representatives of the Boko Haram sect in N’Djamena, Chad, in an effort to secure the release of the 219 Chibok girls abducted by Boko Haram”. The report said “a cease-fire has been achieved while other areas that were discussed are the location and health condition of the girls, those they want to swap with the girls, where Shekau is and more”. Channels TV says the meeting will continue next week. |

Buhari campaign team replies Presidency October 17, 2014Press Release The All Progressives Congress, APC, has described the attitude of the People’s Democratic Party- led Federal Government on the chances of being defeated by the opposition party as vague and unrealistic. The National Chairman of the party, John Oyegun, who reacted Thursday to a statement credited to President Goodluck Jonathan’s Special Adviser on Public Affairs, Doyin Okupe, described him as lacking in knowledge of history and practical reality. “Well it means that they are not good students of history and they are not realistic and practical. “Before now, there was no truly national alternative in this nation; before now, we had the ANPP that was domiciled in the North East, we had the ACN that was domiciled in the South West and off course they had members all over the places. “We had APGA that was largely domiciled in the South East. These three forces have been wielded together. Today we have a national party that is represented, the APC, strongly in every corner of the country. Today man, woman, child are crying for change and the dynamics are different and l pray they continue to mis-read the signs of the changing times and that would be good for us,” Mr. Oyegun said. In the same vein, the Buhari Campaign Organization has advised the presidency to carefully go through Mr. Buhari’s declaration speech before resorting to invectives and mudslinging. The team said contrary to the statement issued by the presidency, Mr. Buhari is bringing new tidings to Nigeria, as clearly stated in his declaration speech, among which is provision of maximum security of lives and property, provision of youth employment and tackling corruption which has become blatant and widespread. A statement issued yesterday by a member of the leadership of the campaign organisation, Osita Okechukwu, said Mr. Buhari first and foremost is a patriot who does not need to school in Harvard to appreciate that millions of our dear countrymen are grappling with extreme poverty, and barely eking out a living. “It is our candid view that if President Goodluck Jonathan has in the past four years provided Nigerians with adequate security, waged strident war against corruption, and ruled according to the spirit and letters of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended; the urgent call of millions of Nigerians for GMB to come and fix the country and stop the dangerous slide of Nigeria into failed state, could not have arisen. According to him, the National Bureau of Statistics Report bear unequivocal testimony “to the truism that the economy continues to deteriorate, with epileptic power supply, collapse of industries, massive food imports and business uncertainty; while the Government continues to announce fantastic growth figures. “In sum, we will restrain ourselves from mudslinging and advise the presidency to do so as well as; for if we are forced to release the ungodly dossier in our docket, the country will troop the streets,” he said. |

The evil spirit was “from” the Lord in that it was allowed by God to harass Saul. Ultimately, all created things are under God’s control. It is likely that this evil spirit was part of God’s judgment upon Saul for his disobedience. Saul had directly disobeyed God on two occasions (1 Samuel 13:1–14; 15:1–35). Therefore, God removed His Spirit from Saul and allowed an evil spirit to torment him. Likely, Satan and the demons had always wanted to attack Saul; God was now simply giving them permission to do so. GQ |

Don’t beg me, do the needful, Obasanjo tells Jonathan, others Posted by: Ernest Nwokolo, Abeokuta Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo returned from a trip to South Africa on Sunday and told President Goodluck Jonathan, Senate President, David Mark, and the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) to do the “needful” and stop inundating him with appeals for forgiveness. Obasanjo in a statement at his Hill top mansion on Presidential Hill Top Estate, Abeokuta, said he has neither left the PDP on whose platform he governed the country for eight nor has anybody offended him by virtue of his membership of the party. The former Chairman, Board of Trustees of PDP, who was South Africa over the South Sudan’s increasing insecurity and violence, said he almost cut short his stay there following “the avalanche of news, cacophony of appeals and pleadings from some quarters of PDP,” at home. He said appeals are evidential manifestation of “misunderstandings and misrepresentations” of facts. Obasanjo who also stated he had had occasion to make his stand on vital matters affecting party known to Jonathan, Mark and the Party Chairman, that issues of principle, morality, honour , integrity, commitment and character which to him are paramount, said he could not “accept that the Zonal leader of my political Party and, worse still in my zone, will be an indicted drug baron wanted in America.” Obasanjo said: “during last week when I was in South Africa as the Chairman of AU Commission of Inquiry on South Sudan and while with my fellow Commissioners, we were deliberating on how to help that new country out of its problem of security and violence, I received avalanche of news and cacophony of appeals and pleadings from some quarters of PDP leadership. ” There are misunderstandings and misrepresentations which some of those appeals and pleas manifested; hence this explanation from me. Talking of inviting me back to PDP is wrong and it is a great misrepresentation as I have never left PDP and I will never leave PDP. ” I have said it before and I will say it again, I rose to become the President of Nigeria on the platform of PDP and for that reason alone, I will remain a card-carrying and ward-active member of PDP for as long as I have to be a political party member. “Secondly, nobody has personally offended me as a result of my membership of PDP. If, however, anybody or group feels offended by my continued membership, I will offer an unreserved apology but continue to remain in the Party. ” I have had occasions to say to the President, the Senate President and the Party Chairman separately that I have no quarrel with any individual or group in the Party. There are, for me, issues of principle, morality, honour , integrity, commitment and character which are paramount. “For instance, as a former President of Nigeria, the Chairman of West Africa Commission on Drug and a member of Global Commission on Drug, I cannot accept that the Zonal leader of my political Party and, worse still in my zone, will be an indicted drug baron wanted in America. “How do I explain that to friends outside Nigeria? This is only one of the many issues that I have pointed and still pointing out. “I have national and international standard to maintain and reputation to keep and sustain. For these reasons, I opted to remain active only at the ward level of the Party till the leadership does the needful. “But under no condition will my commitment to Nigeria be diminished. And, for me, it is commitment to Nigeria first and any other commitment can only follow in second or third place. Where any other commitment is in tandem with what I see and understand as commitment to Nigeria, such other commitment will share a pride of place with Nigeria. “I must hasten to thank the President, the Senate President and the Chairman of PDP with whom, at their instances, these issues have been discussed and laid to rest. My interest and commitment to Nigeria go beyond partisan politics. “Today, Nigeria needs all hands on deck to deal with our pressing problems of security including the issue of Chibok girls, widening inequality, infrastructure, impunity, corruption, poverty and youth education, skill-acquisition, empowerment and employment. “These are issues of concern to most Nigerians. We all need to join hands to move Nigeria forward. I don’t need to be begged for that. “Rather, I beg and appeal to those who are begging me to realize that we must put Nigeria’s interest above politics – party or personal – otherwise, we will all be judged at the bar of history if not the bar of current affairs. ” In addition, we must preserve, sustain and deepen democracy and democratic practices,” Obasanjo stated.[/color] http://thenationonlineng.net/…/dont-beg-me-do-the-needful-…/ |

These 10 less known habits could present a danger to your heart health and should be avoided at all costs. 1. Neglecting a thorough brush and floss routine Believe it or not your teeth play a much larger role in overall health than you may think. The act of brushing and flossing regularly ensures a lot more than an attractive set of pearly whites. The General Dentistry Academy recently found that ¾ of Americans have a type of gum disease, namely from neglecting to floss. Medical research has suggested a link between gum disease and heart issues. So visit regularly your dentist and also read my previous article how to treat gum infection naturally. 2. Maintaining a poor sleep schedule I’ve written in the past about the dangers of sleep deprivation, and we know that in a hectic world it’s tough to balance out a consistent and healthy sleep schedule. Long days keep us from getting the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep and when we finally get extra time, we tend to sleep in. Sleeping too much or too little however, can be disastrous for your health. Harvard medical research found that inadequate or excessive amounts of sleep can mess with the release of hormones in your body. With hormone imbalance comes more serious threats such as heart disease, heart attack, obesity, and stroke. 3. Avoiding the doctor at all costs For some reason many people let high levels of anxiety and a lack of drive keep them away from the doctor’s office. Sometimes it’s the small unusual symptoms that blossom into life threatening conditions if they go ignored. 4. Letting your temper get the best of you One of the most shocking things about negative heart habits is the fact that they don’t have to be completely physical. While sleep and hygiene are important, there are other factors such as stress and anger that are unexpectedly harmful for you. Harvard Professor Laura Kubzansky states that those who build up their emotions and experience sudden outbursts of anger are much more prone to heart disease. Try relaxing and venting your emotions often to avoid letting rage affect your heart. You can get some ideas of how to relieve stress in my previous article. 5. Not acknowledging daily pollution The air you breath on a daily basis is sometimes laden with unknown chemicals and substances, especially in particular work environments and dense cities. The American Heart Association recently stated that pollution from cars, industry, and burning wood indoors can all present danger to your heart. The inflammation caused by breathing in these substances without care leads to serious cardiovascular problems. 6. Pessimism The power of positive thinking goes beyond pseudo science. Recent studies have linked a positive mindset to a healthier heart and lower risk of disease. Try seeing the glass as half full, especially when it comes to your health. This will make living a happier and healthier venture. Also read my article about the 25 habits of people who are happy, healthy and successful. 7. Steroid use Many people are well aware of the dangers that steroids present to overall health, yet they are a continually abused substance. The modification of hormones and natural bodily processes throws your body into a state of confusion. While they may strengthen your muscles, they also weaken your heart. 8. Overlooking the danger of secondhand smoke Secondhand smoke might seem like just an offbeat stench lingering around after a cigarette, but the Center for Disease Control states that within that stench, there are an excess of 7000 chemicals, hundreds of which have toxic properties that can and will hurt your health. Don’t downplay the risk of lingering around secondhand smoke like many people do. If you or someone you know smokes, designate an isolated area for it where it won’t affect other people. 9. High risk pregnancy Pregnancy by itself is a stressful and risky venture for many women. Those who have had a coma or seizure during the pregnancy are twice as likely to develop some form of heart disease. Stay mindful of any difficulties you might have experienced during pregnancy and ask your physician whether or not they impose a risk for future heart issues. 10. Having certain autoimmune conditions There are several types of autoimmune conditions that might contribute to heart disease, despite their seeming irrelevance to the heart. WebMD states that around 50 million people, mostly women, suffer from an autoimmune condition in the United States. The connection between autoimmune troubles and heart health isn’t clearly defined by medical research yet, but experts suppose it has something to do with inflammation response. |
Pro-Jonathan group, TAN, hit by fraud allegations over rented crowd pay October 11, 2014 Muhammad Ahmad The Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria, TAN, a group passionately campaigning for a second term for Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan, has been hit by allegation of fraud, with some members of the group accusing it of staging a crowd in support of the president and refusing to pay them as agreed. TAN has conducted regional rallies in support of Mr. Jonathan since August, with the last of its six conventions held in Kano, for the northwest, which comprises Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Kaduna States. The Kano event held Saturday, September 27. As with the previous five regional rallies, the event was attended by senior officials of the federal government, and thousands of supporters. Much of the crowd at the event was rented, some aggrieved members of the group have told PREMIUM TIMES. The politicians, who are members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Kano State, and were drafted to be part of the TAN rally, have narrated how they were asked to rent a crowd for the president for an agreed fee, only to be left stranded without money to compensate hundreds of youth and women hired for the rally. The matter is threatening to tear the support organization apart with the aggrieved members threatening to seek redress and to expose the sham they claim was on parade at the event. The aggrieved agents now have a pile of debt to settle and some of them who spoke with PREMIUM TIMES say they do not know who to talk to about the money they spent in bringing in supporters. One of the agents, Ibrahim Lawan, who said he is the Secretary of the PDP Youth Awareness Initiative, Kano, told PREMIUM TIMES that he was instructed to bring in 500 youth and women and to hire buses that will transport them to the venue of the rally in Kano city. The arrangement, according to Mr. Lawan, was that each participant would be paid N500 on arrival, and N2, 000 for each bus. Those contracted to rent the crowd hired at least 50 busloads of supporters, he said. The story changed once they arrived at the venue, he told PREMIUM TIMES. “But to my utmost surprise and confusion, as we entered the venue we tried to locate the organizers but we could not see them. When I called them they said I should be patient as they would settle everything after the event. But almost immediately, we realized that the whole thing is a scam because nobody was talking to us again,” Mr. Lawan said. He said they were left to source money and settle some of the youth who became restive and attacked them and their personal vehicles, and seized their belongings, including phones. “This left us in rancour with over 600 angry youths who went wild due to frustrations of spending lots of hours, no food or water and also no available transportation back to their various destinations,” he said. Mr. Lawan said he managed to escape while two of his guards were injured in the fray that followed. Students in the state, who were also asked to put up a showing at the event, were treated the same way, he said. Another agent, Bello Dan Alkarya, also told PREMIUM TIMES that he was asked to bring in women and youth to the venue and would be given N500 naira for each of them. Mr. Alkarya said he did, but unlike Mr. Lawan, he was short-changed as only N300 was paid for each person transported to the rally venue. TAN has no official representation in Kano, PREMIUM TIMES understands. Our correspondent, who made findings in Kano, was told the group has only two resource persons who are responsible for the entire northwest. One of the officials, who agreed to speak, but on the condition his identity be protected, said he had received several complaints of people short-changed by the group after the event. “I simply told them I am not an insider into the activities of TAN because I don’t know much about them. We are only two of us in the whole of North West Region and we don’t have any office. The only way I get to them is when they call me, I don’t know anything about them,” he said. “In fact, the only person who holds everything is the owner of the group, Ifeanyi Uba. He is the one who directed one Jibrin to make sure that they get some people to bring in women and youth. Now you can see that there is a problem in the whole thing,” the man said. TAN’s Director of Communication and Strategy, Udenta Udenta, told PREMIUM TIMES in a telephone interview on Saturday that the association was not aware of the issue and could not have been involved in such an arrangement. “Kano rally was our last rally. The response of Nigerians to our objective and rallies was spontaneous and they are full of passion and conviction. From the South East rally to the North West, that has been the trend. “However, stakeholders, including those contesting elections, can mobilize people to come to the rallies. It is not like TAN is doing the entire mobilization. It is like a market place. TAN only set up a platform to accommodate various interests. Therefore, whoever made the accusation (you are talking about) should be clear on it; he should state clearly who is responsible, when the agreement was reached, date and if not, such a story should be dismissed.” Mr. Lawan said he and others affected have decided to reach out to the media, the PDP leadership and the police. “Till now those in charge of the mobilisation and payment of transport fares and feeding stipends are nowhere to be found or contacted,” he said. “It’s indeed a pity to see how things are being organised by TAN Northwest (Kano). Please PDP, GDG and TAN members, come to my aid, I am currently under pressure and threatened by angry PDP youths to pay them their stipends.” TAN has been at the centre of controversy before. During its earlier rallies, the group staged the events at the peak of the Ebola outbreak in Nigeria defying complaints and warnings from Nigerians about the possibility of helping to spread the deadly virus. |
