Ijebu-Ode (Ogun State) – Oba Sikiru Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount ruler of Ijebuland, has urged the Federal Government to improve the welfare of the Nigerian Police for efficient service delivery. Adetona made the call when the new AIG for Zone 2 headquarters, Lagos, Mr Mamman Tsafe, paid him a courtesy visit at his place in Ijebu-Ode, on Thursday. The Awujale said there was no way the Police could be efficient in tackling insecurity without good welfare packages as well as the provision of modern equipment to fight crime. “If the police are not provided with good welfare packages, communication gadgets, sophisticated weapons as well as patrol vehicles, then we cannot expect much from them. “And I believe it is time for government to be more serious in the work of policing the country, because the first priority of any government is to secure the lives and property of the citizens. “If all our budget will go into security, so be it. It is time government does all what is necessary to solve the security challenges in the country.“ Adetona also called for the creation of state police, saying that state Police would assist in reducing the security challenges in the country to the barest minimum. “I want to suggest that the Police force should not be centralised but rather, each state should be allowed to have its own police. ` `This will help in tackling the rising insecurity challenges in the country. “The Federal Government should be in control of the Army, Navy and Air Force for the protection of the country as a whole, but states should be allowed to be involved in the Police formation.” The Awujale appealed to the Federal government not to relent in its efforts in fighting crime, adding that no nation could progress in tan environment of insecurity. AIG Tsafe said his visit to the palace was to receive royal blessing from the Awujale for efficient service delivery in the Zone. “ I am at the palace to be blessed because I believe if I get the blessing of the palace, I will definitely succeed in whatever I am going to do in the Zone. “The traditional institution is a strategic institution that can fight crime and so we have to synergize with traditional institution in that respect.” The AIG promised that the Police in the zone would work toward peace and security of lives and property of the people. He called on the people to corporate with the Police, adding that security was a collective responsibility of everybody in the country.(NAN) www.vanguardngr.com/2012/11/oba-adetona-seeks-improved-welfare-for-police/ |

Lagos - The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), on Thursday in Badagry, Lagos State, publicly destroyed seized drugs valued at N13.6 billion. The drugs include cannabis, heroin, cocaine, ethamphetamine and amphetamine. Mr Mitchel Ofoyeju, spokesman of the agency disclosed this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. Ofoyeju said that among the drugs destroyed were the heroin hidden in woollen carpets and footballs as well as other seized and forfeited narcotics. According to Ofoyeju, the Chairman of the agency, Ahmadu Giade, supervised the exercise. "Any society that fails to destroy drugs will end up being destroyed by drugs. "Cannabis, like cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine, has serious consequences on health, economy and security of a nation. "We shall not take any decision that will ruin the future of our youths who are the leaders of tomorrow. "Medical or recreational reasons are not good enough for Nigeria to legalise the use of cannabis. "Let it be made clear that Nigeria is not considering legalising cannabis or any other narcotic drugs for recreational use. "The future of our youths is greater than any recreational consideration," Ofoyeju quoted the chairman as saying. He said that the event was witnessed by stakeholders, including traditional rulers, military officers, paramilitary agencies, members of the National Youth Service Corps and students. m.news24.com/nigeria/National/News/NDLEA-destroys-N136bn-drugs-20121116 |
A 57-year-old grandfather, Mr Isiaka Alli, was, on Thursday, named among 21 graduating students with first class degrees as 1,582 students graduated from the University of Ibadan (UI). Alli, the elder brother of the chairman of Odu’a Conglomerate, Chief Sarafadeen Alli, graduated from the Faculty of Law and was also joint winner of the best graduating student for the 2011/2012 academic session. He bagged his first degree 35 years ago and, thereafter, a second degree from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife. Alli’s feat enthralled the crowd at the graduation ceremony held in the Trenchad Hall, when he was called for a handshake with the vice chancellor, Professor Isaac Adewole. He told newsmen that faith and the determination to move the country forward informed his enrolling to study Law in the university. Speaking on the occasion, Professor Adewole blamed the low number of first degree holders on the graduation list to the disruption of the 2011/2012 academic calendar. www.tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/51008-grandfather-bags-first-class-in-law-as-ui-graduates-1582 |
Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic last night scored probably the ‘greatest goal ever’ to round off a crushing victory over England in the first match at his national stadium. talented footballer’s remarkable overhead kick came when he was 30 yards from goal. He sprang six feet into the air to arch the ball over the helpless goalkeeper and into the net. The world’s biggest football names are already queuing up to praise the goal, with even England’s gobsmacked stars hailing his achievement as ‘extraordinary’ and ‘world class’ as Sweden beat England 4-2 in the first match at their national stadium. Four-goal burst unites Swedes Ibrahimovic’s four-goal haul against England has given Swedes a timely reminder of the benefits of their multi-cultural society at a time of increasing support for anti-immigration parties. “Just call it the Zlatan Arena,” wrote newspaper Expressen, after the Swedish captain scored four times – including an incredible angled bicycle kick – that gave Sweden a 4-2 win over England in an international friendly at the new Friends Arena. His goal spree left coach Roy Hodgson beaten for the first time in 90 minutes as England manager. His only other setback was losing to Italy in a penalty shootout in the quarter-finals of Euro 2012. Ibra’s goals came from across his broad register of skills – a classic poacher’s effort to open the scoring, a second where he chested the ball to himself and volleyed home, a thundering free kick and the bicycle kick in stoppage time that completed the scoring. The goals also came on the day a politician from the far-right Sweden Democrats was forced to resign after a film showed him using offensive language about immigrants. Sweden’s national soccer team has a number of players of different ethnic backgrounds including Ibrahimovic, who is of Bosnian and Croatian descent. “They probably weren’t happy with that, the idiots,” second-half substitute Pontus Wernbloom told newspaper Sportbladet, referring to the Sweden Democrats. “I hope Zlatan shut them up.” His midfield partner Kim Kallstrom also spoke to Sportbladet of Ibrahimovic’s value as a role model. “With foreign-born parents and certain problems in society, he can hopefully unify the country in a very good way. Football builds bridges. He’s a modern Swede who stands for the new Sweden.” In a column headlined “Sweden’s Pride”, Sportbladet columnist Simon Bank wrote: “We were in Zlatan’s arena. We come from Zlatan’s country. And if ever we needed symbols and leaders, it is now.” Polls show that support for the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats has risen from six percent at the last election to 11 percent this week. The country’s newspapers highlighted Ibrahimovic’s goals in the domestic political context while also delighting in the reaction of their English counterparts. The British media have been slow to warm to the giant from Malmo as he previously has struggled against their sides in the Champions League but that came to an end at the Friends Arena. Sportbladet’s London correspondent said it had been “my greatest moment in 10 years with the English press pack, and I just have Mr. Ibrahimovic to thank for that.” Ibrahimovic told a news conference afterwards that the breath-taking bicycle kick was the best of his 39 goals for the national side, but it was the first one, the first goal in the new stadium, that gave him the most pleasure. “I liked the first goal more, because it made history in a new arena. It’s not the best goal I have scored, but its the one I have enjoyed the most.” True to form, he didn’t mention politics at all during the post—match press conference, preferring to let his feet do his talking for him on the on the pitch. www.channelstv.com/home/2012/11/15/is-this-the-greatest-goal-ever-scored/

Christian leaders have started reacting to Pastor Tunde Bakare’s comments that a revolution would consume religious leaders in the country, and the way he condemned the acquisition of jets by renowned Christian leaders in Nigeria. One of those who reacted to Bakare’s comments is the chairman of the Northern Christian Elders Forum, Evangelist Matthew Owojaiye, who said Bakare’s comments should be ignored. Also, Apostle Isa El-Buba, the General Overseer of Evangelical Bible Outreach Ministries International, Jos, Plateau State, defended preachers who own jets, concluding that Bakare’s condemnation of these men of God was blasphemous. According to El-Buba, “There is nothing wrong for a preacher to own a jet. If people in the secular world can acquire jets for chief executive officers of big private enterprises, there is nothing wrong in giving gifts to a man of God of Pastor Oritsejafor’s standing. This is a man of God that travels across the whole world. He deserves what he has been given.” Similarly, the General Secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Reverend Musa Asake, flayed Bakare, saying: “What is wrong with giving a gift to Pastor Oritsejafor? Did Pastor Oritsejafor embezzle church money? Did he collect somebody’s money? Some people came together and bought it for him so as to ease his work. This is to help him to continue with the work of the gospel. Oritsejafor is a man of God. He is doing everything for the work of God… It is a welcome idea. I support people who help ministers of the gospel in their work. He did not go out to lobby for it. It was a surprise for him. I was at that occasion. I saw things myself,” he argued. Yet another Christian leader, Reverend Gideon Oyibo, President of the Delta State Baptist Conference, exonerated Pastor Oritsejafor, saying there was nothing wrong with such gesture. According to Oyibo, “The environment influences the way people talk. If you come from a family background of poverty and a member of the family is rich, people will conclude that he is a ritualist. They will conclude that he has stolen money, because in that family, the members do not expect anybody to be rich… In Nigeria, we have a traditional environment in which a pastor is expected to operate by our own evaluation. Whenever a pastor is living above our own evaluation, then we can say anything about that person… The question we should ask is that: did Pastor Oritsejafor ask for the jet? Did he beg for it? Or was it that certain people gathered together under the leading of God and decided to buy it and present it to him as a gift?” www.informationnigeria.org/2012/11/private-jet-christian-leaders-back-ayo-oritsejafor-blast-tunde-bakare-say-poverty-mentality-is-the-problem-of-most-nigerians.html |

As I am talking to you, we are coming from Gwange Cemetery where we went to bury the remains of our lovely and humble colleague, which we miss dearly. “I pray that God Almighty will grant the soul of the deceased eternal rest.” In a related development, gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram members, shot and killed the uncle (names withheld) to the secretary of the clerk of Borno State House of Assembly, Bakura Maina, in Abaganaram ward at about 6.25pm earlier on Tuesday. An eyewitness said the deceased was trailed to his house in the evening; when people in the area were performing their prayers in a mosque and shot him dead. The eyewitness said: “We heard gunshots towards the direction of his house, and thought that it was the JTF patrolling the area, only to hear children crying from the same direction. “People ran into their houses for safety.” The Information Officer to the Borno State House of Assembly, Hajiya Kaltume Jafaru, confirmed that the Assembly lost one of the relations to the secretary to clerk of the House, Tuesday, in Abaganaram ward, adding that the deceased had since been buried. www.vanguardngr.com/2012/11/gunmen-kill-borno-water-resources-director/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

State Traffic Law began, motorists and commercial motorcycle (Okada) riders have complained of the excesses of traffic officials, especially the Police and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA). Well, it seems the state government has listened to our calls to curb their reported excesses and has ordered junior LASTMA officers to stop arresting erring motor-cycle riders and motorists in the state forthwith. According to Vanguard, the General Manager of LASTMA, Engr. Babatunde Edu, gave the order in his address at a public forum on the Law, organised by the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association, NECA, at the weekend. According to Edu, the move was a spontaneous measure to respond to the complaints against aggressive law enforcement by junior officers. He urged the public to report any junior officer who victimises or harasses them, saying they have been stripped of the power to arrest. Speaking on how to distinguish between a junior officer and a senior officer, he said “You can easily identify the junior officer with black epaulet on their shoulders; they cannot arrest, only the senior ones with red epaulets on their uniforms can arrest. We have stopped the juniors from arresting motorists and okada riders except during a joint operation. That is the extent we have gone in checkmating aggressive enforcement of the law” So, next time a LASTMA Officer attempts to arrest you, be sure to look at his shoulder.

Benin – Gov. Adams Oshiomhole of Edo has explained that his government took a tough stance against erring teachers, because even “the Bible says he who does not work, does not eat.’’ Oshiomhole said this at an Inter- denominational Service organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria(CAN) for him in Benin City on Saturday, as part of activities to usher in a second tenure in office on Monday. Oshiomhole said he prays to God everyday to have the courage to do the right thing for the people of the state. The service attracted the cream of the society in Edo State including former Head of state, General Yakubu Gowon, chieftains of the Action Congress of Nigeria, market women, Youths and students. The event was held at the hard court of the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium. On the plea by the Chairman of the CAN, Edo Chapter, Bishop Peter Imasuen, for the recall of the sacked teachers, Oshiomhole said: “the prayer I ask for everyday is for God to give me the courage and wisdom to take the right decision. “The Chairman of CAN has asked me to undo all that we have done. I am a Catholic and every day I ask God to forgive me my sins, even as I forgive those who sin against me. “ I appreciate the power of forgiveness but the Bible says the labourer deserves his wages and the Bible also says that those who do not work should not eat. “ And these are the challenges of leadership. The Bible also tells us that if a finger leads you to commit sin, it is better to cut it off. “ If a teacher would lead us to commit sin we better dismiss that teacher. “For Edo to work, all its parts must work. Every man and woman of age must work. That is why I take my work seriously. “Every leader must device the right means under the guidance of God to deploy the carrot and the stick. “Just as much as you desire to honour or reward those who helped to deliver service, you must also find the courage to bring to line those who think they can earn without working” he explained. Oshiomhole, remarked that the courage to do the two was what he asked for and the courage to define the limit, and that “is what has guided me”. The Governor said “it is important that I also clarify that it hurts me when I have to say to a man who voted for me only four months ago that his job is over. “Ninety- eight percent of those teachers or more voted for me. I actually met some of them and know some by their names . “I know they are relations of ACN leaders. Even yesterday, I learnt that one is the wife of a very senior ACN leader, a very personal friend. “But my understanding of my brief is that, if I don’t have the courage to instil discipline in our public service, the capacity of the government to deliver will be severely weakened”. Oshiomhole, explained that all those beautiful schools will come to naught if the teachers are in Onitsha when they are supposed to be in the classroom, adding that “I worry about the future of our state. “If we must have a work force that would produce men and women who have the capacity and the skill to contribute to the growth and development of Nigeria.. “We must pay maximum attention to access, quality of public schools with teachers that are ready to teach and impact knowledge in an environment that is enabling” the governor noted. In his message, Most Rev.(Dr.) Friday John Imakhai said the victory of the governor and his deputy were well deserved. He said “in view of the monumental and positive impact of the policies of his administration on the lives of the people of the state, evident in all spheres of our common life. “ It was a leadership predicated on a well thought out and faithfully executed vision and transformation of the state”. The Cleric. who took his text from 2nd Kings, Chapter 18 v 1:8 with the theme: “Godliness in the Act of Governance” said the governor’s visionary leadership was there for all to see. “The massive votes of the people were an expression of your vision and a clear mandate to enable you continue the good work you have started. “What the people saw in Edo was purpose driven and result oriented leadership poised towards good governance and service delivery, rather than leadership reduced to a huge joke. “Good governance is participatory, consensus oriented, achievement oriented, accountable, responsive. By implication the views of the minority are taken into consideration in the process of decision making.” In his remark, Gowon expressed delight that the people of Edo voted massively for the governor. Gowon said: “I am here not only to congratulate the governor but the good people of Edo State for casting their votes for him to be governor for a second time. “It is certainly the choice of God. The result of the election shows that it is one of the best in the country. “It reminds me of the support I had during the Nigeria crisis. Bendel State was one of the states that gave me the greatest support.” Gowon also expressed confidence in the ability of the governor. “I can assure you that he would do his best to surpass what he did in the first term.” He told the governorm, “you should look higher after this. That is our prayer.” The church later said special prayers for the Governor and family, the Deputy Governor and his family, the Judiciary and Legislature, the nation, the Oba of Benin and Traditional Rulers. www.vanguardngr.com/2012/11/oshiomhole-tells-church-why-erring-teachers-were-sacked/

THE senior pastor of Daystar Christian Centre Lagos, Pastor Sam Adeyemi, has refuted media reports linking him with ownership of a private jet. He said it is completely false and untrue that he owns a private jet. Adeyemi described the reports as mere rumours without any iota of truth. Speaking with reporters yesterday during the annual Excellence in Leadership (ELC) conference of the church, the host of the popular Success power radio show said: “I do not own a private yet.” He added: “It is a rumour that has been there for sometimes, especially in the junk media. “It is becoming a source of concern now that reputable magazines and newspapers are saying the same thing. “I take it as a prayer and say amen but I won’t say more than that.” He called for evolution of the Nigerian dream to get the nation out of the wood. Until such a dream becomes a national identity, he said Nigeria will move nowhere. He explained: “The whole of America has a clear vision, which they call the American dream. “The question is: what is the Nigerian dream? It is when you define that dream that an average Nigerian knows how to fit in. “Nigeria has no dream or clear-cut vision of what Nigeria will become in the future. “There is none. Without that vision, we are not going anywhere. “We need a vision, a Nigerian dream that all of us must tap into. Just tarring roads is not enough. We need a composite picture of the future of Nigeria.” www.thenationonlineng.net/new/news/i-have-no-private-jet-yet-says-sam-adeyemi/

Security consultant, Olatubosun Abolarinwa has described Major General Muhammadu Buhari’s failure to speak for Boko Haram as a “bit of shock” to him. Considering the devastating impact the insurgency staged by the sect has had on the northern part of the country and the nation as whole, Mr Abolarinwa opined that negotiation is a key part of curbing terrorism. Boko Haram had earlier in the week named General Buhari amongst the team that will speak for it in a planned negotiation with the federal government, ahead of a ceasefire. But the offer was rejected by the former military Head of state, who claimed he does not know anything about the group nor does he believe in their ideology. The security consultant who was a guest on Sunrise Daily from our Abuja studio stated that the Retired Major-General should give more explanations on why he wants more lives to be lost in the country via the bombings and attacks by the sect, noting that thousands of Nigerians, ranging from children to adults have been killed in the last three years of the insurgency. www.channelstv.com/home/2012/11/09/boko-haram-offer-buharis-response-is-shocking/
