Many of the perpetrators of terrorist acts across the country are now in lawful custody as a result of the diligence and steadfastness of law enforcement agents and security operatives across the country. President Goodluck Jonathan made this revelation Tuesday at a New Year service held at the Saint Anglican Church in Abuja. According to him, adherents of the dreaded Boko Haram Islamic sect who attacked the Police headquarters in Abuja, the United Nations building and the Saint Theresa’s Church in Madalla have been apprehended. www.247nigerianewsupdate.com/jonathan-boko-haram-bombers-arrested/ |
Worried by the incessant road mishaps in the country, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has said as from next year, any commercial driver that has not attained the minimum age of 26 years would not be issued with driving licence. The FRSC alleged that underage commercial drivers were responsible for some of the road crashes, which were recorded in the country. Kwara State Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr. Christopher Ademoluti, who dropped the hint in Ilorin yesterday, during the commencement of the issuance of commercial driver’s licence in Ilorin, said: “The measure would enable commercial drivers to have the maturity to drive and convey lives of others safely.” He said: “We want to put the minimum age of a commercial driver in Nigeria at 26 to enable them have the experience, maturity and expertise to drive and convey the lives of other people, unlike the present system where we have under-aged people like 16 year-olds driving commercial vehicles.” Ademoluti, who said the upgraded National Drivers Licence (NDL) was capable of reducing road traffic crashes on Nigerian roads, added that the NDL contains data of commercial drivers, serving as checks on them and making to be more careful and responsible. He added: “With the new divers licence, we want to have all the data of the commercial drivers in Nigeria. We don’t want to have a driver who drives 18-seater bus to endanger the lives of the 18 people. It is only one commercial driver that dies where 18 people die.” Ademoluti also said six driving schools had been approved in Nigeria to train commercial drivers before they are issued with new driver’s licence, “unlike when ordinary motor boys apply for drivers licence after just three months with a senior commercial driver without passing any theoretical application test of driving.” He also said the biometric documentation of all licenced drivers would aid in tracking down criminal activities in the society. Ademoluti also said it would stem the huge loss of revenue accruing to the state via unpatriotic citizens through their illicit activities in the parallel production of NDL. www.thisdaylive.com/articles/frsc-commercial-drivers-must-be-26-to-get-licence/134621/ |

Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has cautioned Nigerians against being taken in by what it claims as the rhetoric of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, a party it claimed would lead Nigeria on the path to Somalia if given the opportunity. Reacting to the CPC's criticism of the Christmas day speech of President Goodluck Jonathan, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, described the statement as a ritual bereft of imagination or sincerity. The PDP said: "President Jonathan has invested heavily in critical infrastructures such as power, road and rail transport, security, agriculture, education among others. While the maturity span of some of these infrastructure is long term and are expected to yield benefits in coming years, there is abundant evidence that steady gains are already crystalizing in sectors such as power, education and rail transport. "The CPC will definitely be blind to this steady progress because constructive engagement is not the ultimate motivation of its criticism," the statement added. On the allegation that the PDP governments mismanaged resources of the country, the PDP said: "Even in 2011 when the CPC took desperation to a criminal level, orchestrating an orgy of election violence that claimed many lives, Nigerians stood firm for the PDP in an election adjudged locally and internationally as the most credible in the nation's recent record. But has the PDP squandered its mandate," the statement asked. "This can only be true in the diseased imagination of the CPC. The PDP has remained the only truly national party on whose shoulders revolve the unity of the nation. Need we say that a Nigeria in the hands of a political party like the CPC is on an express road to Somalia. Besides, the statement continued, "the PDP met Nigeria a pariah state, retrieved and returned it to the centre stage of global reckoning. It is also on record that at a time the economy of the western nations was hobbled by the global melt down with banks collapsing, no bank in Nigeria suffered similar fate. "Similarly, as part of the party's strategy against corruption, the PDP liberalized the economy and threw the door open to generate new jobs. The party also established anti- corruption agencies, the EFCC and ICPC as well as enacted the Freedom of Information law to enhance transparency in governance. The party's dispassion in winning the battle on corruption has seen even senior members of the party convicted for corruption. "We must add, that our battle on corruption is total and that President Jonathan has won the most critical aspect of it which is against electoral corruption. Nigerians now go to the polls and are sure their votes will count"". There is no shorter road to good governance than when mandate and withdrawal of it depend entirely on the people," the statement concluded. www.m.naij.com/news/18209.html |

South Africa’s ailing former President Nelson Mandela was discharged from hospital on Wednesday after spending almost three weeks being treated for a lung infection, the presidency said. “He will undergo home-based high care at his Houghton (Johannesburg) home until he fully recovers,” said a statement from President Jacob Zuma’s office. 94-year-old Mandela yesterday spent his first Christmas in hospital, since being released from prison in 1990. However, President Zuma and Mandela’s relations made up for what would have been a lonely Christmas by visiting him in the Pretoria Hospital. It was the first time since his release from Robben Island in 1990 that he would spend Christmas away from home and family. Afterwards Zuma said Mandela was in “good spirits”. “He was happy to have visitors on this special day and is looking much better. The doctors are happy with the progress that he is making,” said Zuma, who joined Mandela’s wife Graca Machel and the family on the visit to his Pretoria hospital. “We found him in good spirits,” said Zuma in a statement. Mandela was admitted to a Pretoria hospital on December 8 after going down with a recurrent lung infection he has been receiving treatments for. He even had surgery to remove gallstones. In several statements, President Jacob Zuma said his predecessor “continues to respond to treatment”. “Knowledge of the love and support of his people keeps him strong,” Zuma said. “We urge all South Africans to keep Tata (father) uppermost in their thoughts at every place of worship or entertainment tomorrow on Christmas Day, and throughout the festive season. “We also humbly invite all freedom loving people around the world to pray for him. He is an ardent fighter and will recover from this episode with all our support,” Zuma said. www.informationnigeria.org/2012/12/nelson-mandela-discharged.html |
The Bishop of Kaduna Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Mathew Ndagoso, yesterday said that the Church (Catholic) in the state had forgiven dreaded Islamist fundamentalist, Boko Haram, over the series of attacks on catholic churches in the state. The cleric said they decided to forgive the sect since Jesus Christ was born on Christmas Day as a peacemaker, stressing that forgiveness is one of the reasons why Christmas is celebrated. Ndagoso said, "As we celebrate Christmas, we remember the killing of our members and bombing of our churches, particularly Saint Rita Catholic Church, Ungwan Yero, Badarawa, Kaduna. We can only pray for the souls of the departed to rest in peace. "We thank the state government, individuals and different organisations for standing behind us during these turbulent times. "There is nothing we can do to our enemies but to forgive them. This Christmas time. We must show love and forgive one another for peace to reign in our society. "We should remember that over 2,000 years, during Jesus time on earth. He faced a similar persecution, humiliation and death in the hands of those that were supposed to love Him, but even at that He forgave them. He is born for our sake, and He died for our sake. "So violence, being it religious, political, economic and social, has been there long time ago in the history of humanity." www.m.naij.com/news/18138.html |
President Goodluck Jonathan came under criticism from his Facebook friends on Tuesday after he posted his Christmas message on the social networking site. The President in the message said he "personally" instructed government officials to make conditions favourable for Nigerians to celebrate the Yuletide. The airports, he said, for instance, had been given a "facelift", adding that the terminals were rehabilitated and the runways upgraded ahead of the festive season. He wrote, "I want to seize this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a merry Christmas and a happy New Year in advance. I feel the pains of Nigerians and that is why this Yuletide I have personally instructed that our roads be worked on to enable you and your loved ones to travel safely for the holidays. "Not done, we ensured that for the first time in decades, the cross country services (Lagos to Kano with stops in cities along the route) of the Nigerian Railway Corporation were revived just prior to the holidays to provide Nigerian masses with an inexpensive alternative to road and air transportation. "This administration also took steps to increase power generation by remaining true to the Timelines of the Roadmap to Power Sector Reform, which has seen history made on Friday, December 21, when Nigeria's power generation hit an all-time high of just over 4,500 MW." But no sooner had Jonathan posted the message on his wall than it was greeted with a barrage of criticisms from his friends. While a few praised and advised the President on how to tackle the problems bedevilling the country, many others faulted his submissions. One of his friends, Kaycee Aloy-Obi wrote, "Mr. President hold your greetings. You and your family are having great celebration. A litre of petrol is sold at N110-N120, against N97 which is the official price. There is unprecedented traffic jam on Ore- Benin road due to bad roads. "People cannot go around to visit love ones because of insecurity. Bury your head in shame with your 4,500 MW when South Africa is generating 50,000 MW. It is paradoxical that many Nigerians are having dry Christmas in midst of plenty." Yusuf Suleiman, asked the president to match his words with actions, adding that his "advisers are not telling you the true picture of what is happening." He said, "In Nigeria today, under your watch, the country recorded the highest looting of our treasury, and you didn't do anything. We also have seen how citizens were massacred, in fact, the highest since civil war ended (and) your government is not doing enough to stop that." Also, Bethel Vincent, wrote, "Haba! Mr. President, you know say lie no good at all. Why post something we have not witnessed, yet you refer to us as friends and fellow Nigerians. As I am talking to you, my flat is running on generator; Benin-Auchi road is filled with potholes and you are talking about airport, how (many) Nigerians can afford air transport?" A friend, Ajoba David, wrote, "Sir, congratulations! Merry Christmas and a happy new year. What do we expect as a New Year gift come Tuesday, January 1st? Well, I hope it is not going to be another fuel subsidy razzmatazz like we experienced last year. "Nevertheless, Nigerians have yet to recuperate from the fever that was injected into their veins last January as a result of the purportedly and verbally(sic) removal of the fuel subsidy which Nigerians have yet to see any sign of seriousness in bringing (those) culpable to book." www.m.naij.com/news/18133.html |

At least 27 people were reported dead, while 18 others sustained various degrees of injuries following an accident involving an articulated vehicle along Ruwa Wuri-Tangaza road on Monday, which also claimed the lives of a number of cows and sheep. According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the trailer with plate number Sokoto XA 443 SAA, which was heading to Warri, Delta State from Mano village, allegedly lost control and plunged into a river close to Masallaci village in Tangaza Local Government. The victims, who had been buried in Bagida village, reports say were from Bagida, Sabiyo, Tinnigere, Ruwa Wuri and Tsoni villages, all in the local government. Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Sokoto, Dr. Umaru Aliyu, while confirming the incident said: "Our findings revealed that the accident occurred due to over-loading and over-speeding," adding that the trailer was conveying both cows and humans. "27 people died, while 15 were injured. FRSC Launches New Drivers’ License That Requires Medical Verification https://www.channelstv.com/home/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Nig.-drivers-license-300x297.jpg The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has launched the new commercial drivers’ license with security features that require a mandatory medical certification of drivers before issuance. According to the Corps Marshall of the commission, Mr Osita Chidoka, the new license has security features, intelligence camera and biometrics that will mandate a medical certification for all commercial drivers before issuance. He noted that the new license will be issued to commercial drivers after verified medical certificates on hearing and eyesight. Hypertension and blood sugar level among other requirements. Statistics reeled out by the Corps Marshall showed that up to 40 per cent of road accidents between 2007 and 2010 across the country resulted to almost 13,000 deaths involving commercial drivers. This is the reason for the launch of the new commercial drivers’ license that will require all commercial drivers to present their medical verification before being issued the new license. Also to be mandated for commercial drivers is a compulsory standard driving school check and a yearly retraining programme to be handled by the drivers’ unions. The issuance of new drivers’ licenses will commence immediately as stated by the FRSC, while all old licenses will be phased out by September 2013. This new developments was welcomed by key players in the transport sector such as president, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Alhaji Najeem Yasin and the Special Assistant to the Minister of Transport, Dikko Bala. The Corps Marshall said other categories of licenses will also be released shortly. It is believed that when fully in use, the new license will build a good data base of drivers and vehicles and help curb the high rate of accidents involving commercial vehicles in the country. http://www.channelstv.com/home/2012/12/17/frsc-launches-new-drivers-license-that-requires-medical-verification/ |

The Catholic Bishop of Auchi, Most Rev. Gabriel Dunia reiterated the position in Abuja at a press conference on maternal mortality organised by the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN). Mr. Dunia, who is also the Chairman of the Health Committee of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), said that the position of the church was unambiguously against the use of artificial methods. The cleric said that government and other stakeholders should desist from deviating from the main issues and concentrate more on educating Nigerians on adopting natural family planning methods. He said that the church and other social agents of change should focus attention and resources on behavioural change among members of the society. According to the cleric, Nigerians love children as precious gifts from God, the same way women should be encouraged to bear children whenever they wish to. "The Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria and the catholic faithful strongly oppose the diversion of attention and resources away from the main causes of maternal mortality to the purchase and distribution of contraceptives. "Rather, we propose adequate investments in the area of education, primary healthcare and the mainstreaming of natural family planning education and services to enable Nigerians realise their fertility or child spacing intentions,'' he said Mr. Dunia called on government to redirect the sums budgeted for purchase of contraceptives to the educating more Nigerians on the adoption of natural family planning methods. He said that the church was not in support of overpopulating the country, but that it was in the forefront of promoting responsible parenthood. Mr. Dunia said that promoting the concept of responsible parenthood in the country had no adverse effect on the population and it would better serve the cause of humanity and that of God. According to the clergyman, it is the belief of the Catholic Church that population health is best realised through openness and respect for the cherished values of the people. In his remark, the Auxiliary Bishop of Abuja, Most Rev. Anslem Umoren said that the church was in support of a situation where pregnant women would be nurtured till birth. He said that the church would not in any guise give its support to proponents of artificial birth control methods such as abortion and use of contraceptives. Mr. Umoren called on governments at all levels to channel more funds to educating the masses and to provide quality health facilities in the rural areas to help check the increase in maternal mortality. He said that the church had never believed in the use of artificial means of birth control in Nigeria. The event was attended by some medical experts and some clergies in the church. www.m.naij.com/news/17360.html |
When speaking of those who died at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut this past Friday (Dec. 14), President Obama called them “beautiful children” and “remarkable adults.” 26 lost their lives inside the school; most of them children aged 6 and 7. The president came to Newtown to meet with the families of the victims and speak at the interfaith vigil held at the town’s local high school on Sunday night. While he was remorseful about the “unconscionable evil” that transpired, President Obama noted that this was the fourth time in his presidency he had visited and grieved with families of a mass shooting. “We can’t tolerate this anymore,” Obama said, speaking after clergy and Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy. “These tragedies must end, and to end them we must change.” Earlier in his speech, Obama rationalized that keeping our children safe and teaching them well is something that we can only do together with the help of friends, neighbours, community and a nation. “This is our first task: caring for our children,” he said. “It’s our first job. If we don’t get that right, we don’t get anything right. That’s how as a society we will be judged.” “And, by that measure, can we truly say, as a nation, that we are meeting our obligations? Can we honestly say that we are doing enough to keep our children, all of them, safe from harm? Can we claim, as a nation, that we’re all together there letting them know that they are loved and teaching them to love in return? Can we say we’re truly doing enough to give all the children of this country the chance they deserve to live out their lives in happiness and with purpose?” After a brief pause, Obama picked up again. “I’ve been reflecting on this the past few days,” the president said, “and if we are honest with ourselves, the answer is “no.” Obama ended his 18-minute speech by reading off the names of each of the 20 children that were killed in the massacre and asked that God bless them “with His holy comfort.” [NBC] www.informationnigeria.org/2012/12/obama-joins-connecticut-school-for-vigil-we-cant-tolerate-this-anymore.html |
