The story has been told about the miraculous cure of a 40-year-old mentally ill woman who has been simply identified as Olubisi Aina at Sanyo area of Ibadan, Oyo State on Tuesday, 11th December, 2012 after an auto accident. According to the Tribune, which reported the story, the way and manner in which Olubisi Aina regained her sanity after about a decade or more of insanity is amazing and it could be described as a wonder. Aina had been insane for 10 years or thereabout and paraded herself, most often nakedly, on the Sanyo-Temidire-Agbamu road, her habitation for over a decade. She usually slept on her back with her face up in drainages or on the main road close to the bridge on Damo River in the area; and come rain or shine, Olubisi was always in her habitat and is well known in the neighbourhood. Perhaps that was her saving grace on Monday, 10th December, 2012 when a car ran over her where she was sleeping at about 9a.m. Olubisi was quickly rushed to Oore-Ofe Hospital and Maternity Home where her bruised mouth and legs were attended to. However, after being discharged, patron of the hospital, Mr Toyin Adesina, advised that she should have a bath. She was later led by acquaintances to Damo River where she was given new sponge and soap for her bath. As she raised the sponge above her head, she said “Thank you God” in Yoruba Language. Instantly, she regained her sanity and whatever question was posed to her, she answered accurately! "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" launched Peter Jackson's new trilogy with the biggest December box-office opening ever in the U.S., taking in $85 million in three days. Jackson's prequel to the blockbuster "Lord of the Rings" series, the first of three instalments, shattered the record for biggest December debut set in 2007 by "I Am Legend" with $77.2 million. The overall box office was the highest ever for a December weekend at $134 million, and was up 14 percent over the comparable weekend last year, reports The Wrap. It's been nine years since moviegoers have had the chance to revisit Middle-earth and they were glad to be back, giving "The Hobbit" an "A" CinemaScore. The film is directed by Jackson and stars Ian McKellen as the wizard, Gandalf, and Martin Freeman as the titular hobbit, Bilbo Baggins. New Line and Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer co-produced and co-financed the film. The "Lord of the Rings" movies all opened the week before Christmas, but Warner Bros. head of distribution Dan Fellman said the studio saw an opportunity with "The Hobbit" to get a jump on the holiday season. "You sort of lead with your chin when you go out early like this," Fellman told TheWrap, "but we knew we had a great picture, and we think we're set up to build on this from here. Next week is tricky since it's still pre-holiday, but by the time we get to Christmas we'll be rolling." Fellman said one of the goals was to attract a new generation of Middle-earth fans, and the numbers suggest that could happen. The audience was 42 percent under 25 years of age and 57 percent males. Fellman noted that school's are generally still not out for the holiday break and that, combined with the "A+" CinemaScore that moviegoers under 18 – who made up 20 percent of the audience – gave the film point to the potential to capitalize on younger audiences in the coming weeks. The debut by "The Hobbit" is bigger than any of the "Rings" movies, including the franchise finale "The Return of the King," which opened to $72.6 million domestically in 2003. "The Hobbit" is benefiting from a higher mark-up on 3D tickets. It is the first adaptation of the beloved J.R.R. Tolkien books to arrive in theatres in that format, which accounted for 3,160 of the total 4,045 screens and made up 49 percent of the overall gross. The per-location average overall was nearly $21,000. The 326 Imax locations brought in $10.1 million, averaging more than $30,000 per theatre over the three days. About 460 theatres showed "The Hobbit" in the groundbreaking but controversial 48 frame-per-second format -- which doubles the standard film speed and provides more clarity -- that Jackson utilized when he shot the movie. Between the high-speed film, 3D and Imax versions and combinations of those formats, moviegoers had six available options for viewing "The Hobbit." Imax screens playing the film in the 48 fps format averaged $44,000 per location. Friday's grosses for "The Hobbit" were swelled by the $13 million in sales from midnight screenings at 3,100 locations, 2,160 of which were 3D. Finishing a distant No. 2 was DreamWorks' animated kids movie "Rise of the Guardians," which brought in $7.4 million to up its overall domestic total after four weeks to $71 million. In its sixth week, DreamWorks and Disney's Oscar front-runner "Lincoln' brought in $7.2 million to raise its overall domestic total to nearly $108 million. Sony's James Bond thriller "Skyfall," also in its sixth week, finished fourth with $7 million. It has taken in $272 million domestically. Fox's Oscar hopeful "Life of Pi" added $5.4 million this weekend. Director Ang Lee's lyrical epic has taken in nearly $70 million after four weeks. www.thisdaylive.com/articles/the-hobbit-breaks-us-box-office-record/133793/

ABUJA — The House of Representatives, yesterday, threatened to order the arrest of Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and former Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Verification and Reconciliation of Subsidy Payments, Mr Aigboje Aig- Imoukhuede, for failing to appear before the House Committee on Public Petitions. Chairman of the House Committee, Hon. Uzo Azubuike, issued the threat at yesterday’s hearing of the committee which continued deliberation on a petition presented to it by the Managing Director of Capital Oil and Gas Ltd, Ifeanyi Ubah. Azubuike had said the two personalities had shunned the invitation of the committee twice and their absence was frustrating the investigative work of his Committee. In spite of the absence of the two personalities, the public hearing went on yesterday with the appearance of the two gladiators, namely Chairman of Coscharis Group, Mr Cosmas Maduka and Ifeanyi Uba, Managing Director, Capital Oil and Gas Industries Limited. In response to the excuse that Okonjo-Iweala was absent because of the kidnap of her mother, Azubuike said the invitation was not for the minister as a person but for the Federal Ministry of Finance to put up an appearance and supply the information requested by the committee. C’ttee warns He warned that if the ministry was not represented at the next sitting of the investigative panel, the committee would be left with no other option but to issue a warrant of arrest on the head of the ministry. Aig-Imoukhuede had, through his lawyers informed the committee of his absence on legal grounds. In the letter, he pleaded that whereas the committee invited him as Chairman, Presidential Committee on Verification of Subsidy Payments, he had since discharged his role in that committee and submitted a report to the government. According to him, there was, therefore, no more legal grounds for him to function in that capacity. Aig-Imoukhuede also pleaded that the issues for which he was being invited were already before different courts in Nigeria and abroad, hence discussing them would amount to contempt of the courts. www.vanguardngr.com/2012/12/subsidy-palaver-reps-threaten-to-arrest-okonjo-iweala-aig-imoukhuede/ |

Telecommunications services provider, Airtel Nigeria has taken a step to lead a new phase of telecoms revolution in the country as it announced the completion of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) trial in Lagos, the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria. LTE, widely accepted as the true 4G, is a standard for wireless communication of high-speed data for mobile phones and data terminals. It is based on advanced network technologies with a central focus of increasing the capacity and speed using a different radio interface together with enhanced core network. With the successful completion of the first 4G LTE trial in Lagos, Airtel says it is ready for test in the other major cities across the country including Abuja and Port Harcourt. The company added that the Lagos trial threw up exciting results as data users could open up simultaneous HD Videos on Youtube without buffering. Download speed, under ideal conditions was 37 Megabits per Second (Mbps), while under non- ideal conditions, was 32 Mbps; upload speed was - 10.6 Mbps. Measurement under non ideal condition was done using www.Speedtest.net. Speaking on the trial, the chief executive officer and managing director of Airtel Nigeria, Rajan Swaroop said Airtel is committed to strengthening its position as a true pioneer of innovation in the Nigerian telecommunications domain, saying this is in line with its overall corporate vision of becoming the most loved brand in the daily lives of Nigerians. "At Airtel, we pride ourselves as leaders and we are passionate about continuously creating the next innovation to empower telecoms consumers and enrich the lives of our customers across the country. In the coming weeks, we shall take this success story to other parts of the country so that Nigerians will benefit from this innovation when finally unveiled," said Swaroop. LTE is a truly global mobile phone standard for advanced mobile broadband. There is use of different frequency bands in different countries, which will mean that only multi-band phones will be able to use LTE in all countries where it is supported. www.bizcommunity.com/Article/410/78/87104.html |

Given that Nigerians are gripped with fear and insecurity, is it not advisable to ban all sorts of driving in the country? Taking somebody's life is never acceptable but taking the lives of innocent school children is tantamount to a crime against humanity. Banning driving will bring Nigeria to a stand still. We need this break to reflect on our future as a nation. |

Following the adoption of a motion moved by chairman, House Committee on Finance, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin (PDP, Kano), on matters of urgent public importance, informing the House of failure of revenue collecting agencies to honour their several invitations and provide details of their Internally Generated Revenues (IGR) as part of the 2013 budget revenue frame work, the speaker of the Huse of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, yesterday, signed a warrant of arrest on heads of the affected agencies. Tambuwal then directed Jibrin to write to him and list the erring agencies. A copy of the arrest warrant signed by the Speaker indicated that CBN governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, NNPC Group Managing Director Engr. Andrew Yakubu are among those listed. To face arrest also include heads of AMCON, FCT, FAAN, Pension Commission of Nigeria, NIMASA, NPA, among others. Meanwhile, the force police spokesman has said it has not received any warrant from the National Assembly for the arrest of anybody. It would be recalled that heads of the government agencies in charge of revenue collection had been invited to appear before the House Committee on Finance over the non-remittance of N1.3 trillion revenue to government coffers with most of them failing to appear at the meeting. www.247nigerianewsupdate.com/tambuwal-orders-arrest-of-sanusi-15-others/ |
Ahmadinejad’s government of Iran has launched a social network website whereby government approved contents only can be allowed to be uploaded unto the website, this has been said to be Iran’s version of YouTube but it is mainly to promote culture and values of Iran. It will be recalled that the widely known YouTube was blocked by President Ahmadinejad along with other social media networks like Facebook and Twitter have also been blocked. This move we hear is to block any kind of western influence on the people of Iran in everyway, to curb future uprising against the Ahmadinejad government. Ahmadinejad decided on the blockage of YouTube when his election was contested after he was declared winner and was followed by a wave of protest which ended up forcing the state to take tough actions against dissidents. The government has in its pipeline an internet provision outfit which it would be launching to take care of citizens’ connection to the wider web which allows them access to some Western media outlets, Blogs, pornography and social networks like Facebook and Twitter which are already banned in the country. The move has been widely criticised by the western world as trying to minimise the freedom of the citizens of Iran in web access. http://ir.mehr.ir www.channelstv.com/home/2012/12/10/iran-launches-mehr-own-version-of-youtube/

Please Am Writing The Names Of Nosie Makers. So Nobody Should Make Nosie. |
In Nigeria, some movie stars have proven again and again that they can guarantee return on investment as long as their faces adorn the poster. They are Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Omoni Oboli, Funke Akindele and Nse Ikpe-Etim. Or how else could one explain the success of box office hits like Mirror Boy, Ije, and Tango With Me all having Genevieve Nnaji starring in them? And what about Figurine and Anchor Baby which both starred Omoni Oboli as the lead actress? Mirror Boy, Tango With Me, Last Flight to Abuja and Phone Swap all had sizeable negative reviews, yet they topped the box office, made huge profit and left many Hollywood movies far behind. Below is a list of Nollywood’s five bankable actresses, their earnings and what is possibly working for them. Genevieve Nnaji Topping the list of five is Genevieve Nnaji. Love or hate her, Genny as she is fondly called, has a way with cinema audiences that make them come back again and again for her movies. So far, Genevieve’s starring in the movies has grossed over N83 million at the box office. Mirror Boy (described by the actress as her first major film and the first to put her at the box- office) made N18 million, while Ije netted N60 million turning out to be Nigeria’s highest grossing movie ever. But Genevieve had to share the money with Omotola, who also acted alongside her. If the sharing formula is 50-50, then Genevieve gets N30 million of the total gross. Genevieve’s next movie, Tango with Me went on to make N35 million. So, putting all the figures together, Genny remains at the head of the pack. What seem to be working for Genevieve are her enduring power, popularity and social media connection. The actress has been there for over a decade and is still waxing stronger. Her wine seems to taste better with age. Another plus for Genny is her popularity. Genevieve is hugely popular across Africa and most especially among the youths. Before now, she has been very active on the social media especially Twitter. She even had to put up a Facebook advert after reports emerged that some acts were ahead of her there. Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde Next on the list is Omotola Jalade- Ekeinde with box-office gross of N60 million. She made N24 million with Last Flight to Abuja, N6 million from Private Storm and her N30 million share in Ije bring her total earning to N60 million. This year alone, no actress has made as much as N24 million from a single movie; Funke Akindele would have done so with The Return of Jenifa but the movie hit the box office in 2011. Omotola, who was reported to have been paid N5 million by Tarila Thompson all in the bid to make his movie a blockbuster, has been described as the biggest box office actress of 2012. She recorded successes back to back but it remains to be seen if she can pull off the box office magic again with Amina and other movies coming in 2013. Omotola has been an A-list actress even before Genevieve got her first big break and so what has been working for her is the wise investment in her brand. Her enduring presence and unceasing contact with her fans via the social media has made her popular even in an environment where a mother of four like her is not fashionable. Funke Akindele Surprisingly, the third person on the list is Funke Akindele, a young lady who rose to fame in I Need To Know, a TV series, and went on to earn a monstrous fame with Jenifa. Funke is an unlikely candidate on this list. Now, how can one explain that she is third on a list parading heavy weights like Omoni Oboli, Nse Ikpe- Etim and Stephanie Okereke among others? So far, Funke has made over N56 million, netting over N20 million in 2012 alone. In The Return of Jenifa, Funke netted N35 million. The movie ran till February 2012. Her movie, Married but Living Single made N9.9 million while Maami made N11 million. The actress is on her way to another cinema glory with a movie, A Wish. Let’s hope she will be able to wave the magical wand again and create a box-office success. For Funke who recently got married, the plus factor for her is her huge popularity among the masses and elites. Her movie, Jenifa cuts across all social groups with the street parlance in it becoming the mode of communication in social gathering. And as an icing on the cake, Funke has moved upscale, she is now the toast of events organized by the rich and not so rich. Her box office credibility transcends the cinema as all DVDs parading her face turn into gold. Omoni Oboli Omoni Oboli, who is still largely unknown to those who don’t patronise the cinema and social media, is fourth on the list. She is a silent achiever. Before the trio of Genevieve, Omotola and Funke even dreamt of hitting the box office, Omoni Oboli already took the lead. Figurine, her first box office appearance made N13 million while her second effort, Anchor Baby made N18 million bringing her total earning to N31million. Omoni’s strength is her exclusivity and knack for quality. It is a known fact that if the project is not big and ambitious, Omoni might not do it. The disadvantage of that is, despite her box office credibility, Omoni is still unknown in areas where there is no access to cinemas. Perhaps, that is the reason she tries to make up with the red carpet presence. For now, the exclusivity is working for Omoni; perhaps her new movie, Broken and other works will introduce a new twist. One other thing that should not be forgotten is the unprecedented publicity of Anchor Baby in 2010. The film also had Omoni at the forefront of meeting and greeting of fans at the cinemas. Nse Ikpe-Etim The fifth slot belongs to Nse Ikpe- Etim. She seems to be the latest sensation in big budget movies. In Mr and Mrs, Nse was a delight, her performance was a reference point and it was a hook that kept drawing people to the cinema while the movie was there. Mr and Mrs made N6 million while another of her film, Phone Swap made N20 million, making a total of N26 million. Too early for Nse to cement her place, as she hasn’t done N15 million back- to-back but one thing the actress has made clear is that she has intention of doing that. The leading four acts should be afraid of Nse because her strength lies in her pure acting talent. Nse is born to act, deemed to be unnecessarily assertive a times, but you can’t accuse her of not knowing her lines. And she pushes her movies with virgour, moving from one cinema to the other. www.247nigerianewsupdate.com/top-5-richest-nollywood-actresses/

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday urged Nigerians not to lose faith in the country as government was doing its best to address the numerous challenges confronting the nation. The President said this at the 2012 Service of Nine Lessons and Carols, organised by the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Voice of Nigeria (VON). Represented by the Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, Jonathan said that the present administration would not relent in its efforts to improve the standard of living of Nigerians. According to the president, Nigeria’s challenges are not peculiar and insurmountable; they just require strong support and understanding from the citizenry to overcome them. Jonathan said the Federal Government remained committed to the development of the economy for all Nigerians, irrespective of their status and religious backgrounds. He urged Nigerians to use the season of Christmas to reach out to their compatriots who were in dire need of assistance, noting that Christmas was a period of love and faith. In his Christmas message, the presiding bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Bishop Mike Okonkwo, urged Nigerians to use the Christmas season to reflect on the challenges confronting the nation. He, however, urged them to stop complaining about the difficulties but to keep faith with God as no situation was too big or difficult for Him to handle. Okonkwo called on those in positions of authority to seek God’s favour at Christmas by impacting on the lives of the less-privileged in the society. The Governor of Delta State, Mr Emmanuel Uduaghan, has declared that the kidnapped mother of the coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Professor (Mrs) Kamene Okonjo, will be rescued within 24 hours. The governor who refused to give more details on the high profile kidnap that occurred in his state, made it known that he has given the order for the immediate rescue of the Professor. Mr Uduaghan, revealed this on our breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily, where he said that “I have given the orders that she (Professor Mrs Kamene Okonjo), must be fished out within the next 24 hours.” The Governor refused to discuss any further on the kidnap and rescue mission saying, “I don’t want to discuss about the kidnap because of the nature of the person involved.” “Let’s just leave it at that”, he concluded. Meanwhile, the Delta state police command says that it is on the trial of kidnappers who abducted the octogenarian Professor of Medicine. Delta state police spokesperson, Charles Muka, said the police have information that will lead to the arrest of the kidnappers. The oil-rich state has been a major kidnap spot for oil workers prior to the amnesty declared by late President Umaru Yar’Adua for the Niger Delta militants in 2008. There has been a lull in such abductions in the last few years, but a number of kidnaps have been reported in the last two years. The mother of the coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance Professor (Mrs) Kamene Okonjo, was abducted by unknown gunmen from her home in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta state at about midday on Sunday. Confirming the kidnap, a press release signed by the Minister’s personal assistant, Mr. Paul Nwabuikwu, late on Sunday, stated that the mother of the Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was abducted from her home in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta state. It is yet to be confirmed if those behind the kidnap, are the same people who have made threats against the coordinating minister in recent, past or other elements with hostile motives. The kidnappers are yet to make contact with the family of the victim. The 82-year-old monarch’s wife was said to have been abducted at about 1.47PM by a gang of armed men who seized her at the gate of the palace at Ogbe-ofu. Her husband, Obi Chukwuka Okonjo, a retired Professor of Economics, is the traditional ruler of Ogwashi-Uku. www.channelstv.com/home/2012/12/10/okonjo-iwealas-mother-will-be-rescued-in-24-hours-uduaghan/
