Report: Chelsea and Ivory Coast star Didier Drogba 'not ready' to play in African Cup of Nations

Ivory Coast and Chelsea striker Didier Drogba is believed to be in a fragile mental state following the attack on the Togo team bus ahead of the African Cup of Nations.

Ivory Coast  vs  Burkina Faso

Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso will go head to head in the African Nations Cup Group B opener at the Estadio do Cabinda looking to return the focus to on-field events following Togo's departure from the competition.
The build-up to the continental event in Angola has been completely overshadowed by the gun attack on the Togolese team bus on Friday, which reportedly killed three people and injured others.

Togo, who were scheduled to take on Ghana in the second Group B match on Monday, flew home on Sunday on the advice of their national authorities, leaving the tournament in disarray.

Togo midfielder Alaixys Romao claimed Chelsea's Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba was "not ready'' to play in the competition.

The Grenoble player told L'Equipe: "Drogba said he was fully aware of the psychological state he was in, and he too was not ready to play this CAN.''

CAF confirm Togo exit, but they may return

Togo have finally left the 2010 African Nations Cup, although their future in the tournament remains shrouded in uncertainty after it emerged they have asked to return to Angola at a later date.

The players were ordered back to Togo against their wishes by the country's leading governmental figures on Sunday. The decision - made by Togolese prime minister Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo and president Faure Gnassingbe - came after the players had performed a U-turn and decided to play as a mark of respect to the dead.

And they may still get their wish after it emerged sports minister Christophe Tchao had asked for their place in the tournament remain open.

He told reporters before the squad left Cabinda: ''We have ordered a three-day mourning. The players are leaving with the bodies of their fallen brothers and we have asked the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to find an arrangement so we can catch up with the competition later.''

Actually the Angola's coach not only send a wrong signal , also made a tactical blunder. Gilberto was the engine room with pace. He worked the first goal, caused the two penalty and score one. He tot he had won the game. I dont think he removed him bc he want him to rest for the next game. Am sure if he wasn't leading he wouldn't have removed him.
Thank you. God bless you. You understand this thing called footie. cheesy

slimshay:
Common FBS, removing your star man 80th minute at 4-0 is called giving him rest for the next game. There is noting tactical or 'messagy' about that. Mali just did what had to be done, they kept their spirit until the end of the game. Kudos.
He sent the wrong signal and even if there was nothing wrong in doing so, he should have packed the midfield and defence. Something he failed to do. Rafa made the same mistake when he took Torres off with 3 or so mins to go and I'm sure you remember what happened. Football is played for 90 mins +.
If you watch the match you should understand what I am saying. Mali had no single shot on goal in the first half and most of the second half.

I am taking nothing away from Keshi and Mali. They played the last 10 mins like they meant it and the goals kept coming. Another 2-3 minutes and they could have scored a fifth.

How Mimiko saved us from Alao-Akala —Oyo NUT

The Oyo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers on Sunday gave kudos to the Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, describing him as a true democrat.

General Secretary of the Oyo NUT, Mr. Olu Abiala, said that but for Mimiko who came to the rescue of the union by allowing and supporting it to hold its election in Akure, the Ondo State capital, the Oyo State Governor, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala would have humiliated the teachers.

“The approval of Mimiko for us to hold our election in Akure was what we needed to bail us out of the political cul-de-sac that we found ourselves after the Oyo State government had made it difficult for us to use the Teachers House in Ibadan for our election,” he said.

However, the Special Adviser to Governor Alao-Akala on Public Communication, Mr. Dotun Oyelade has said the Oyo State Government will resist any attempt to drag it into the NUT’s crisis.

Politics › Mend To Review Ceasefire On January 30 by FBS(op): 8:02am On Jan 11, 2010
MEND to review ceasefire on January 30

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta said on Sunday that it was set to review the indefinite ceasefire it announced on October 9, 2009 and that it will make its new position public on January 30.

The MEND said this even as the group accused the FG of double standard over the trial of Umar AbdulMuttalab who is facing charges of terrorism in the United States of America.

The MEND revealed this while commending the attack on the Makaraba pipeline of Chevron Oil Company in Delta State on January 8.

Its spokesman, Jomo Gbomo, said in an online statement that although its fighters did not take part in the attack on the oil facility, it saluted the courage of those who carried out the operation.

Gbomo said the Nigerian Army might not confirm the attack because it had exposed the vulnerability of the oil industry infrastructure and the resolve of the people of the Niger Delta to fight for their land.

“Typically, the Nigerian military is still investigating the veracity of this reported attack,” Gbomo said.

The attack on the oil facility came as the sub-committees of the Federal Government’s Amnesty Implementation Panel began deliberations in Yenagoa with an interaction with ex-militants.

The group said the Amnesty Panel had inflated the number of militants that purportedly handed over their weapons under the amnesty deal.

“General Abbe, the current defense minister and his cohorts claimed to be disbursing funds to 20,000 militants when those actively involved in fighting the Nigerian military over the last two years do not exceed five thousand, a majority of whom had nothing to do with the government’s amnesty,” Gbomo said

President placed on life support

Confusion over the true state of President Umaru Yar‘Adua‘s health heightened on Sunday as ministers and other aides were sharply divided over whether Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan should take over as acting President.

The confusion, our correspondents reliably learnt, grew as fresh facts emerged over the weekend that contrary to reports of improving health, the President might have been placed on life support machine since the last week of December.

Our correspondents gathered that Yar’Adua was transferred in the last week of December from the Intensive Care Unit of the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to one of the supporting wards in the Royal Suite attached to the hospital, after he suffered “a repeated multiple organ failure.”

Yar’Adua: Soyinka, Ojukwu, Musa to lead mass protest

All appears set for a mass rally on Tuesday in Abuja to protest against President Umaru Yar’Adua’s failure to transfer power to Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan, 49 days after he travelled out of the country for treatment in Saudi Arabia.

Those lined up to lead and speak at the rally tagged ‘Enough is enough’ include Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka; former Kaduna State governor, Alhaji Balarabe Musa; the Ikemba Nnewi, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu and Pastor of the Later Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare.

Others are Mallam Farouk Adamu, Mr. Solomon Asemota (SAN), Mallam Uba Sani, Mr. Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), Hajiya Najatu Mohammed, Prof. Pat Utomi, Pastor Sarah Omakwu, Mr. Femi Falana, Mr. Olawale Oshun, Dr. Tunji Abayomi, Mrs. Ayo Obe, Mallam Naseer Kura, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, Mr. Uche Onyeogocha, and Mr. Clement Nwankwo, among others.

Coming together under the aegis of ‘Save Nigeria Group,’ the protesters are also expected to press against what they described as power vacuum in the country, vacillation over electoral reforms, terror tag on Nigerians and corruption.

According to a statement signed by Mr. Fred Agbeyegbe, Mallam Buba Galadima, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, Mallam Tanko Yunusa and Mallam Salihu Lukman on behalf of the organisers, the rally will take off from Unity Fountain, near Transcorp Hotel, Central Business District, Abuja and terminate at the National Assembly Complex.

Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana, who spoke in his Ilawe-Ekiti, Ekiti State hometown on Saturday, confirmed that the rally was to protest against many of the problems facing the country.

He said, “We are starting a series of protests on Tuesday in Abuja. The government must be forced to address issues such as 6,000 megawatts of electricity and absentee President. We will challenge the policy that allows those on level 16 and above to go abroad for medical checks and treatment. It is discriminatory and we will resist it. The people in government are too comfortable; we must force them to do the right thing.”

How dare anyone say Angola was rubbish? They played better for most part of the match and went 4 goals up. Deservedly so too. Soft penalties maybe but they were LEGIT to the core and you won't see better and more quality headers than Flavio's. And Yes Kanoutes was CLASS! cheesy

Angola's coach made the mistake of pulling their star man off (he sent the wrong signal! Reminds me of Rafa grin ). . .and even if he had to do that, he should have simple packed his MF and defence. Heck he could have played 3 DMs'.

Keshi on the other hand moved his full backs up and they provided the super comeback.

Manucho should have killed the game and the moment Mali got one back, you could see the writing on the wall.
Truth be told, their keeper was messed up BIG TIME though he pulled one outstanding save from Diarra.

What a start to the tournament.

Angola 4-4 Mali

Mali pulled off a stunning fightback to draw 4-4 with Angola after trailing 4-0 with 11 minutes left in the opening game of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The hosts went 2-0 up in the first half thanks to two headers from striker Flavio, while Gilberto and Manucho scored a penalty each to make it four.

But Mali grabbed one back when Seydou Keita stabbed home from close range.

Frederic Kanoute headed in a second before Keita and Mustapha Yatabare scored in injury time in Luanda.

The first ever match at the 11 November Stadium provided a thrilling start to a Nations Cup that had been overshadowed by Friday's gun attack on the Togolese team, who have been withdrawn by their government and flown home.

But the Palancas Negras' late collapse will infuriate their Portuguese coach Manuel Jose, who saw his team throw away what seemed a certain three points.

"This draw tasted like a defeat to me, this is one of the most bitter pills I've ever had to swallow in all the matches of my long career," said Jose.
