The ‘kraken’ COVID variant XBB.1.5 is rising quickly in the US : here’s what it could mean for the UK
The heavily mutated omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, was first detected in late 2021.
Due to the many mutations in the spike protein (a protein on the surface of SARS-CoV-2 that allows the virus to attach to our cells) omicron was able to quickly become the dominant SARS-CoV-2 variant. These mutations allowed it to bind to respiratory cells more tightly than previous variants, rendering it more infectious.

Rivers State Police Command in Nigeria has arrested a 17-year-old boy, identified as Noble Uzuchi over impregnating 10 older women.
The suspect was arrested alongside his accomplice, Chigozie Ogbonna, a 29-year-old man.
According to the authorities, the two suspects, and two other ladies, Favour Bright, 30; and Peace Alikoi, 40 were allegedly running a baby factory.
The Rivers Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Grace Iringe-Koko said that the arrests were carried out following a tipoff.
The police said that the four suspects operated in the Obio/Akpor and Ikwerre local government areas of the state before their arrest.
She added that the 10 pregnant ladies had been rescued by officers after the raid and arrest of the suspects.

Officials of the Islamic police, Hisbah in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of Kano have arrested a herbalist, Muhammad Mansur, for impregnating a woman, who went to him to seek medication.

Mansur who hails from Kode town in Kano State, Northwest Nigeria, was arrested after the victim (name withheld) reported him to the Hisbah office to seek justice regarding the seven-month-old pregnancy she has, which she claimed belonged to him.

The victim said the man had been trying to sleep with her since her mother went with her to seek medication, but he didn’t succeed until she went there alone.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will monitor commercial banks to ensure that they comply with the directive of loading the redesigned Naira notes in their
Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).

CBN Director, Currency Operations, Mr Ahmed Umar, made this known in Abuja on Monday at the Training Session for State Directors, National Orientation Agency (NOA) on Redesign of Currency Notes Policy.

Umar said that the CBN’s directive was to implement the Jan. 31 deadline withdrawal of old naira notes in circulation.

We want to use this training session to pass the message that CBN has enough currency notes to go around to the general public.

The Internal Revenue Service issued 12 million tax refunds to Americans who paid too much in taxes on unemployment benefits they received in the first year of the pandemic.

The agency corrected about 14 million 2020 tax returns which is related to unemployment compensation, then resulting into $14.8 billion in refunds that averaged $1,232 each. The IRS started correcting the returns in May 2021.
The IRS took the tax probe because of the American Rescue Plan, which excluded up to $10,200 in unemployment aid from being taxed in 2020, which later went into effect after some taxpayers had already filed their tax returns for the 2020 tax year.
“Some taxpayers received refunds, while others had the overpayment applied to taxes due and probably other debts,” the IRS said in a statement. “In some cases, the exclusion only resulted in a reduction in their adjusted gross income.
However, Those eligible for the unemployment exclusions for the 2020 tax year included individuals and married couples whose modified gross income was below $150,000.

The Nigerian government, under the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) has said it will be resuming the screening of passengers coming into the country for possible COVID-19 cases.
Dr Geoffrey Okatubo, Director, Port Health Services, made this known on Monday in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, during the Ministerial bi-weekly meeting on the update of COVID-19 response and developments in the country’s health sector
Okatubo stated that the government was planning to use the Rapid Diagnostic Test (RTD) during the screening, adding that the exercise is targeted to keep the coronavirus situation under control.
“COVID-19 self-tests (RTD) will be handed out at all our international airports, land and sea borders, while travellers will also be informed on the importance of measures that they can take to prevent being infected,” he said.

UNIZIK students protest as armed robbers kill a 200L student over SIM card

Students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Awka, Anambra State, on Monday, January 9, staged a protest over the killing of their colleague by armed robbers.

It was gathered that the 200L student of the department of Philosophy, identified simply as Daniel, was reportedly shot dead by armed robbers while trying to recover his phone from them in his Ifite-Awka lodge.

Twitter Employees Bring Their Own Toilet Paper After Elon Musk Fired Janitors
