US employers added 1.4 million jobs in August, unemployment rate at 8.4%

U.S. employers added 1.4 million jobs last month and the unemployment rate fell to 8.4%, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said in its latest employment report on Friday.

While the fresh data may indicate some hope for an economy walloped by the COVID-19 crisis, the unemployment rate still isn't anywhere near pre-pandemic levels. In February, the unemployment rate was 3.5%.

"Looking at one month of job gains doesn’t provide the appropriate context, you really need to look and see how far we still are in the hole," Elise Gould, a senior economist at the Economic Policy Institute think tank, told ABC News ahead of the report's release. "In April, we lost more than 20 million jobs in one month. It's going to take months, if not years, to get back to that level."

The unemployment rate is now lower than 10% for the first time since the pandemic started, which was the high seen during the Great Recession.

Jason Michael Mesich, 48, faces three 2nd-degree murder charges for the death of his wife, and for shooting two sisters who are his Bloomington neighbors — including a 12-year-old girl who was shot in the head.

The Hennepin County Attorney’s office says officers were called to a home on the 8300 block of 15th Avenue Sunday at about 11 p.m. on several reports of gunshots being fired and possible victims. They arrived to the sound of more gunshots being fired inside the home.

Officers went to the home’s detached garage and found the body of 47-year-old Angela Lynn Mesich. She had been shot several times in the neck and upper torso.

After a standoff, police entered the home and found Jason Mesich in the basement, where he continued firing a gun, screaming and throwing things. He eventually surrendered to officers. Mesich is estimated to have fired 40 rounds during his standoff with police.

Officers then learned two of Mesich’s next-door neighbors, who are sisters, had been shot. WCCO spoke with the victims’ aunt Monday, who identified them as 12-year-old Makayla and 29-year-old Canisha. Makayla was shot in the head. She is in critical condition as of Tuesday, and her family says she’s heavily sedated. Canisha was shot several times in the legs and left hip, and is in serious condition.

Mesich told investigators that he doesn’t remember much about the shootings, but said it all started because he and his wife had an argument in the garage about the couple’s lack of sex. He said he “probably” went into the home and got a gun. When he returned to the garage, he said his wife tried to hit him, so he punched her in the collarbone with two fists. He then said she told him to shoot her, and that he assumed he did so, and assumed he “emptied” the gun to make sure she was dead.

Russia has sought to “amplify” concerns over the integrity of U.S. elections by promoting allegations that mail-in voting will lead to widespread fraud, according to an intelligence bulletin obtained by ABC News, again echoing a frequent and unfounded complaint raised by President Donald Trump.

Analysts with the Department of Homeland Security’s intelligence branch issued the warning on Thursday to federal and state law enforcement partners after finding with “high confidence” that “Russian malign influence actors” have targeted the absentee voting process “by spreading disinformation” since at least March.

“Russian state media and proxy websites in mid-August 2020 criticized the integrity of expanded and universal vote-by-mail, claiming ineligible voters could receive ballots due to out-of-date voter rolls, leaving a vast amount of ballots unaccounted for and vulnerable to tampering,” the bulletin notes.

“These websites also alleged that vote-by-mail processes would overburden the U.S. Postal Service and local boards of election,” it continues, “delaying vote tabulation and creating more opportunities for fraud and error.”

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, are set to visit Kenosha today, two days after President Donald Trump swept into the city that has been shaken by shootings and unrest.

The two trips are likely to offer stark contrasts in tone, substance and style.

But the stakes couldn't be any clearer as Biden and Trump battle for support in battleground Wisconsin, where the most recent Fox News Poll showed the challenger with an 8-point lead over the president among likely voters.

During his stop Tuesday, the Republican president toured burned out buildings and spoke with law enforcement officials about the need to quickly end the kind of arson and looting the city saw last week.

The Democratic nominee has condemned Kenosha’s unrest but is putting his focus on the event that sparked it — the shooting of Jacob Blake from behind by police officer Rusten Sheskey.

"We've got to heal, we've got to put things together, bring people together" Biden told reporters Wednesday in Wilmington, Del.

Tensions have eased in Kenosha in recent days. A curfew was lifted.

This is Biden's first trip to Wisconsin during the campaign.

Taking health precautions because of the coronavirus pandemic, Biden stayed away from Milwaukee two weeks ago for the Democratic National Convention, which was turned into an almost entirely virtual event.

Meanwhile, Trump came to Oshkosh the day the Democratic convention opened and has mocked Biden for staying away from a state that Hillary Clinton famously didn’t visit during the 2016 general election.

Biden will meet with the family of Blake, who was paralyzed from the waist down after he was shot Aug. 23. Trump said he didn’t speak with Blake’s family because lawyers got involved in the process.

As Trump visited Kenosha, the Blake family said they wanted focus not on the president but on bringing the community together.

The decision to go it alone, first reported by The Washington Post, follows the White House's decision in early July to pull the US out of the WHO. Trump claims the WHO is in need of reform and is heavily influenced by China.

Provoking a flurry of critical reactions from health experts and lawmakers, the Trump administration’s announced Tuesday afternoon that it will not participate in the “global effort to develop, manufacture, and equitably distribute a coronavirus vaccine, in part because the World Health Organization is involved”—a decision the Washington Post said “could shape the course of the pandemic and the country’s role in health diplomacy” going forward.

The purpose of the Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access (Covax) Facility is to “speed vaccine development and secure doses for all countries and distribute them to the most high-risk segment of each population,” explained the Post.

While more than 170 countries are in negotiations to participate in Covax, Judd Deere, a spokesperson for the White House, told reporters that “The United States will continue to engage our international partners to ensure we defeat this virus, but we will not be constrained by multilateral organizations influenced by the corrupt World Health Organization and China.”
