Sanders endorses Biden via live stream to help him defeat 'the most dangerous president in the modern history of this country'

Less than a week after dropping his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, Sen. Bernie Sanders on Monday formally endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden for that role to “make certain” the party defeats Donald Trump, “the most dangerous president in the modern history of this country.”

Sanders made his endorsement of Biden in a remarkable event that was live-streamed from their respective homes in Burlington, Vt., and Wilmington, Del., amid the coronavirus outbreak that has dislocated daily life and brought the country to a standstill.

“Not in a million years would we have believed that we would be talking to each other in our respective homes, that we could not do rallies, that we could not, you know, get out of the house,” Sanders said. “We are in a terrible moment, an unprecedented moment, and I know we share the understanding that we’ve got to go forward right now and out of this in an unprecedented way to address the terrible pain that so many of our fellow Americans are feeling. And so today I am asking all Americans — I am asking every Democrat, I am asking every independent, and I’m asking a lot of Republicans — to come together in this campaign to support your candidacy, which I endorse, to make certain that we defeat somebody who I believe, and I’m just speaking for myself now, is the most dangerous president in the modern history of this country.”

The moderate Biden and progressive Sanders said they agreed to form six “policy working groups” to merge their platforms. The Vermont independent senator had been pushing for the former vice president to adopt some of his popular policies, including Medicare for All.

AP Interview: Sanders says opposing Biden is 'irresponsible'

Bernie Sanders said Tuesday that it would be “irresponsible” for his loyalists not to support Joe Biden, warning that progressives who “sit on their hands” in the months ahead would simply enable President Donald Trump's reelection.

And lest there be any question, the 78-year-old Vermont senator confirmed that “it’s probably a very fair assumption” that he would not run for president again. He added, with a laugh: “One can’t predict the future.”

Sanders, who suspended his presidential bid last week, spoke at length about his decision to endorse Biden, his political future and the urgent need to unify the Democratic Party during an interview with The Associated Press. He railed against the Republican president but also offered pointed criticism at his own supporters who have so far resisted his vow to do whatever it takes to help Biden win the presidency.

He seemed to distance himself from his campaign's former national press secretary, Briahna Joy Gray, when asked about her recent statement on social media refusing to endorse Biden.

We all remember Trump saying that there were just 15 cases that would soon go down to zero, and that everything was under control. A totally baseless claim, and he acted accordingly or should I say he didn’t act as required.

On Jan. 28, Trump retweeted a headline from One America News, an outlet with a history of spreading false conspiracy theories: “Johnson & Johnson to create coronavirus vaccine.” This was a lie. 

On Feb. 29, Trump said a vaccine would be available “very quickly” and “very rapidly” and praised his administration’s actions as “the most aggressive taken by any country.” None of these claims were true. Dr. Fauci said it would be 12-18 months before it could become available to the American people. 

Trump’s inaction meant that the United States fell behind South Korea, Singapore and China in fighting the virus. “We just twiddled our thumbs as the coronavirus waltzed in,” William Hanage, a Harvard epidemiologist, wrote. Hanage could have added that Trump's thumbs were busy on his phone tweeting out nonsense to the American people.

At a Feb. 10 political rally Trump said, “Looks like by April, you know, in theory, when it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away.” Note: April is just a few days away. Do you think Trump's promised miracle will occur? We shall see.

On Feb. 5, Senator Chris Murphy tweeted: “Just left the Administration briefing on Coronavirus. Bottom line: they aren't taking this seriously enough. Notably, no request for ANY emergency funding, which is a big mistake. Local health systems need supplies, training, screening staff etc. And they need it now.”

Murphy also criticized the White House’s decision not to take coronavirus test kits offered by the World Health Organization in January, which he said was an especially devastating mistake because that test was ready to go and easily replicable.

A U.S. sailor who was admitted to the intensive care unit at a Navy hospital in Guam after contracting the coronavirus has died, Navy officials said Monday.

The sailor, who was admitted into the ICU at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Guam on April 9, is the first active-duty service member to die from COVID-19. The Navy is withholding the sailor's name until 24 hours after next-of-kin notification.

The sailor tested positive for coronavirus on March 30, three days after the carrier docked in the Western Pacific island. They were removed from the ship and put in an isolation house on Naval Base Guam with four other sailors assigned to the vessel, the Navy said.

Medical checks were carried out twice daily on the sailors in isolation. During a check on April 9, the sailor was found unresponsive. Emergency responders performed CPR and transferred the sailor to the Naval hospital's ICU. The sailor died four days later, on April 13.

An analysis of 3,883 Covid-19 patients admitted to 229 critical care units in England, Wales and Northern Ireland up to Thursday has been published by the Intensive Care National Audit & Research Centre.

Of these patients, 871 have died, 818 have been discharged, and 2,194 were last reported as still receiving critical care.

The average age of the patients was 59.8 years. Some 72.5% were male, and 27.5% female. Some 66.4% were white, 14.4% Asian, 11.9% black, and 1.3% of mixed race.

Nearly three-quarters of the patients had a body mass index higher than the recommended healthy level of 18.5 to 25. Some 35% had a BMI of 25 to 30 - the overweight range. And 38.5% had a BMI over more than 30 - putting them in the obese range.
