Many injured as Dangote truck crashes into BRT bus along Ikorodu road (Video)


A Dangote truck carrying a full load of cement lost control and crashed into a BRT Bus at Ogolonto area of Ikorodu, Lagos.
The BRT bus driver is currently in a critical state and at least ten passengers were injured and have been taken to the hospital by the Lagos state rapid response team.

The driver of the Truck eloped immediately after the incident which has caused heavy traffic on both sides of the road.
According to a statement from LASEMA, recovery operation is still ongoing
“On getting to the scene of the incident, a Dangote truck fully loaded with cement had a brake failure and had a head-on collision with a Primero blue Mass Transit bus with registration number LSR-228XS conveying 40 seated and 20 standing passengers.
“All passengers on board suffered various degrees of injuries with one female passenger losing her life and the driver suffered severe life-threatening injuries with his leg totally decapitated.
“The combined efforts of the Agency’s Assets (Medical Unit, Tiger unit, Papa Eagle and Cobra unit) are on ground working alongside LNSC, Nigeria Police, FRSC and LASTMA to ease vehicular movement and ensure a swift recovery of the accidented truck.
“Recovery operation ongoing”.

Pogba says racist abuse makes him stronger


Paul Pogba says he is ready to fight against racist abuse after the Manchester United star and his team

-Mate Marcus Rashford were subjected to social media taunts following their penalty misses. Pogba was the target of racial slurs on Twitter when his penalty was saved by Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio in Monday’s 1-1 draw.

“Racist insults are ignorance and can only make me stronger and motivate me to fight for the next generation.” During the Palace match at Old Trafford, United fans unveiled a banner reading ‘United against racism’.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says his side "do not need to excite everyone in every second" after a comfortable victory over Arsenal maintained their place at the top of the Premier League.
The Reds also preserved their 100% start to the Premier League season as Mohamed Salah scored twice to add to Joel Matip's first-half header in a dominant performance at Anfield.
"It was a performance full of power, energy, greed and passion, which I think you need against a team like Arsenal." Klopp told Sky Sports.

The Gunners, the only other side in the top flight to win their first two games, had opportunities to shock Liverpool in a tight first half, especially when record £72m signing Nicolas Pepe shot straight at keeper Adrian after running clear.
Liverpool took control when Matip put them ahead with a powerful header from Trent Alexander-Arnold's corner four minutes before the interval.
And any hopes manager Unai Emery had of watching his side mount a recovery were snuffed out in the 49th minute after a moment of madness from new signing David Luiz, who needlessly dragged Salah back in the area.
Liverpool's Egyptian attacker drilled home the penalty and then embarrassed Luiz again out on the touchline at the start of a dazzling run that ended with a low, curling finish into the bottom corner just before the hour.
Arsenal substitute Lucas Torreira pulled one back late on, but nothing was getting in the way of Liverpool's 12th successive league victory, equalling their best sequence in the top flight under Kenny Dalglish between April and October 1990.

Liverpool had moments when they stuttered against Southampton and their defence has looked unusually fallible - but this was a movie we have seen many times before at Anfield under Jurgen Klopp.
Arsenal have suffered badly here in recent seasons, losing 5-1 last season and 4-0 in Arsene Wenger's final season. Once again, despite taking their time to hit top gear, Liverpool's ruthlessness and intensity simply proved too much for Arsenal.

True, they gratefully accepted Luiz's gifts but once Matip put Liverpool ahead the pressure and intensity applied to Arsenal was simply too much for the Gunners to resist.
And, as Arsenal discovered, when you fail to take chances to punish Liverpool, the inevitable outcome is that you will be punished yourselves.
Liverpool do not simply have a prodigious work ethic that makes life permanently uncomfortable for opponents; they also have world-class attacking options as illustrated by Salah's brilliant weaving run and slide-rule finish for their third.
Klopp's side missed out on the title by a single point despite only one loss, to champions Manchester City, last season - and three wins from three has quickly put the marker down that they intend to go one better and claim that first title in 30 years.
Liability Luiz kills Arsenal chances

Luiz has a track record of success that suggests he may be able to bring moments of quality to Arsenal's defence after his surprise £8m move from Chelsea - but there is no escaping he has the enduring capability to be a complete liability.
The Brazilian, at 32, is not going to change and so it proved as he delivered a moment of crass stupidity that killed stone dead Arsenal's hopes of taking anything away from Anfield.
It is a stretch to say Arsenal had Liverpool on the ropes but, despite the overall domination of the European champions, the Gunners certainly had moments of threat through the pace and menace of Pepe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. They would have started the second half with hope.

Luiz made it all count for nothing when he felt his best method of dealing with Salah's 49th-minute raid into the penalty area was to blatantly drag him back by the shirt in a red-mist moment that did not even seriously require the intervention of the video assistant referee.
Salah, despite some ludicrous protests from Luiz, drilled home the penalty before taking him to cleaners when scoring Liverpool's brilliant third.
Too much of the Arsenal's playing out from the back was asking for trouble against this Liverpool side. Throw in the act of stupidity from Luiz and ultimately they got what they deserved, despite some areas for Emery to admire.
"We were doing some transitions very good and we had some chances but, in the second half, the penalty was very soft," Emery told BBC Match of the Day. #
"After 2-0 our reaction was good. We needed to attack and take a different moment in the match. We are disappointed we lost 3-1 but watching some players we can be optimistic.
"We need to improve in possession and countering the pressure but Liverpool is the best team with this. We have to be realistic but we can fight closer to them."

1.4 million children in Lagos have no birth certificate


Data from RapidSMS, a global birth registration platform has shown that no fewer than 1,436,986 (31 per cent) of under-five children in Lagos are not registered at birth.

To this end, the National Population Commission (NPoPC), Lagos State has been mandated to register 1 million children before the end of the year. Children Reeling out these figures at a two-day media workshop on the need to scale up birth registration in Lagos State, the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, Child Protection Specialist, Mrs Sharon Oladiji, noted that “Lagos State 2019 report card revealed that the worst-performing Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Lagos are Epe with 28,817, Lagos Island 28,579, and Ibeju- Lekki with 18,346. Also, in 2018, the report shows that the worst-performing LGAs are Ajeromi/Ifelodun with 34 per cent, Lagos mainland with 36 per cent and Mushin with 41 per cent birth registration.

” Oladiji said: “Birth registration is the first step towards recognizing a child’s inalienable right as a human being, but in Lagos state this is failing to meet their right to an identity, name and nationality. She regretted that over 1.4 million children’s right to basic services are threatened. Oladiji stressed the need for expansion of birth registration services in LGAs noting that the interventions to accelerate progress should be given priority, especially amongst the poor, in rural areas and among socially disadvantage groups. In Nigeria, there are provisions in the current legislation for birth registration.

The Federal Government’s decree No. 69 of 1992 on vital registration states that registration shall be carried out free of charge, within a period of 60 days from the date of birth. Speaking, the Head of Department, Vital Registration, Department National Population Commission, NPoPC Lagos state, Mr. Nwannekwu Ikechukwu said when a child is not registered, there is no official record of his/her full names adding that he/she will not have access to basic services. He said to scale up the number of registered births in Lagos, the commission plans to create an additional 26 centres across the state.

He blamed the low birth registration rate in the State to myriads of challenges including lack of suitable offices for comptrollers and registrars; touting of birth and death certificate; the unhealthy rivalry between Lagos state council staff and NPoPC registrars among others.

Ikechukwu pleaded with the government to employ more ad hoc registrars, to enable the commission cover more areas, especially in hard to reach communities within the state. On his part, Lagos State Director, National Orientation Agency, NOA, Mr. Waheed Ishola, who noted that the media was critical in the scaling up of birth registration, appealed to media practitioners to buy into the programme and help create awareness on the project.

Lampard: Batshuayi is staying at Chelsea

Frank Lampard has reiterated that Michy Batshuayi will not be leaving Chelsea this summer.
Blues boss Lampard recently admitted that the likes of Davide Zappacosta, who has since joined Roma, could go, but dismissed reports that out-of-favour striker Batshuayi might leave before the European transfer window closes on 2 September.


Lampard has continued to overlook the Belgian but again made it clear at a news conference on Friday that he plans to keep him.
Chelsea have been under a transfer ban, with Olivier Giroud and youngster Tammy Abraham currently the only recognised strikers available.
“We need Michy. We need the competition up front with the strikers we have,” Lampard said.

However, there is a strong chance that other fringe players could follow Zappacosta out of Stamford Bridge.
Tiemoue Bakayoko and Kenedy are not in Lampard’s plans and have attracted interest from a number of clubs, although an offer from Monaco to take their former player Bakayoko on loan has been rejected because Chelsea were unhappy with the terms of the proposed deal.


“We’ll see. Nothing is clear at the moment,” Lampard said.
“They are all our players and I’m happy with the squad. As it stands no one is leaving.
“We cannot bring players in so we have to be careful with the squad.”

One of the primary responsibilities of government is to provide – or regulate the provision of – efficient service to the populace. Successive Nigerian government has failed in this regard. It has become a convention to get inefficient service, despite paying high. Both private and public institutions are culpable, but the latter errs more. Public officials are more of exploiters than service providers. The uniformed ones are worse. You are bound to pay extra before being attended to. Such is the case of the Nigerian Immigration Service. This piece brings you a firsthand account of the anomalies and corruption going on at the passport offices.

I flew into Nigeria for some engagements and noticed my passport would expire in six months. This qualifies it for renewal. I had two options: renew it in Nigeria or abroad. I opt for the former to avoid the stress I faced to procure the expiring passport. Besides, it is more expensive to renew the passport abroad and I stay far from the embassy. Renewing a Nigerian passport abroad is an uphill task many try to avoid. The unethical conducts of the embassy officials would make you want to renounce Nigeria. But patronizing the embassy is better. You won’t realize this till you visit the passport offices in Nigeria.

“You can’t just walk in and get a passport”, my friends warned. They vowed I won’t get it quickly unless an immigration officer ‘assist’ me. ‘Assist’ means paying an officer to monitor and hasten the passport application process. Rejecting the suggestion made them recount the tales of people who failed to subscribe for assistance. They narrated how such person’s application hit the rocks with “no record found”. How their image gets captured wrongly – rendering the passport unusable – was also recounted.




Other persons I chatted also stressed the importance of ‘assistance’. They disclosed that applying without being ‘assisted’ can take you up to 5 months, while you’d get your passport between 1-14 days when assisted. I remained adamant, but succumbed when a contact said “I know someone (an immigration officer) who’ll do it fast for 30k. Pay the standard 18, I’ll add the remaining 12”. That silenced me. I couldn’t dissent. To overegg the pudding was unnecessary. I agreed, on a condition that I would pay all.

We were welcomed by touts advertising ‘assistance’ when we visited the passport office. Most of them are agents of the immigration officers. Some officers were at the gate that day, and every other day. They were positioned as security, but seen scouting for new applicants; identifying them by their demeanor. The ideal thing is to direct applicants to a guideline or office, but they never did. They were asking them “do you know your way?” Answering “no” or making inquiries makes you prey. You would be connected to their partnering tout or officer to ‘assist’ you. Answering “yes” means you’ve already established contact with an officer inside.

We met an officer who charged me N35,000 for the 32 page passport, but we slashed the price to N30,000. The officer reluctantly agreed; persuading us to pay more. I paid N30,000. The original cost of the 32 page passport I applied for – lately before the issuance of the enhanced e-passport commenced – is about 18,000. Paying N30,000 made me unhappy till I eavesdropped that some people paid N45,000 for the same 32 page passport. That made me feel N30,000 was a good deal. I was somewhat glad. You would too.

My money did some work. The officer ‘assisting’ me fast-tracked the application. I did the face and fingerprint capturing within three hours. Don’t say I waited long! Capturing within such a timeframe isn’t possible without ‘assistance’; the applicants were over hundred. Nonetheless, the assistance wouldn’t have been necessary if the system is efficient, but those profiting from the inefficiency would not let it be.

The officer ‘assisting’ me collected my file after capturing. Like every other colleague, the officer has a client’s record book. My data was added to several others contained therein. I was told to come for the passport in two weeks. Efforts to secure a faster date failed. I left and couldn’t return till after a month due to an interstate engagement.

I got back and need to return abroad. Having performed the bribe ritual, I wasn’t worried about the passport, but the cost of flight ticket. I searched for ticket and was lucky to get a good offer from a reputable airline. This got me excited. My eyes stared at the ticket as I reminisced my last experience with the airline, hoping to have a good time again. I was tempted to book the flight, but held back. Being confident the passport is ready isn’t enough, lay your hands on it, I counseled myself. That turned out to be my best decision in the year.

“Your passport is not ready, we don’t have booklet”. The immigration officer ‘assisting’ me uttered the next morning. I smiled thinking it was a joke, only to discover it isn’t. I became worried about my scheduled activities abroad. How do I explain to a foreign organization that I won’t return at the agreed time due to passport renewal delay, when such doesn’t happen in their country? Efforts to get the passport quickly exposed me to several other wrongs in the passport office.

There’s no orderliness and feedback mechanism. You must always be present, even for minor things. The officers are used to earning extra from ‘assistance’ daily. This affects their commitment to you. They no longer give you much attention after the first day, their attention is always on the new clients. They have so many clients that they struggle to remember their name and situation when they dial. This made me resolve to always visit the passport office to monitor progress.



My regular visits made me a familiar face to some of the officers. A narration of my engagements abroad and the implication of not travelling immediately only earned me pity, not solution. I discovered the officers have factions and an unofficial policy. The officer you pay is responsible for you; no officer will assist you even if they can, no matter how terrible your situation is. This immensely affected me.

The officer ‘assisting’ me, a senior one at that, no longer have strong links in the production room due to recent reordering of duties. Clients of those who have strong networks in the room were collecting passports. Then, I discovered my officer was greedy. Officers in the production room charge colleagues for speedy processing because they know they’ve been paid too. The officer just submitted my file without tipping. As the days passed, I got more disturbed as I receive emails to explain my absence abroad.

An officer advised I should explain my situation to the head of Service Compact (SERVICOM) – the complaint and efficient service delivery section. I met the head of SERVICOM after a long wait. “Who is assisting you?” he asked. My eyes popped. The SERVICOM head knows about ‘assistance’. Great! I answered and was told to summon the officer over immediately. I felt uncomfortable, thinking the officer may be reprimanded, but nothing happened. They both checked my application status and detected no problem.

The SERVICOM head therefore instructed the officer to regenerate my file. He promised to indorse and send it to the production room, but I must do something before that happens. I must have a flight ticket and get a letter from the organization am with abroad, stating why I have to return urgently. That got me infuriated. Booking has not helped most of the applicants I’ve seen around. Moreover, I can only show proof that I’m affiliated with a foreign organization and why my trip is urgent, but can’t get a letter from abroad.

I contend that it is unreasonable for Nigerian immigration to be directing Nigerians to get a letter from foreign institutions before they can be issued a passport. The noisy room suddenly went silent. Unbothered, I stated that the passport is my inalienable right and no foreign institution would persuade Nigeria before I get it. The room was still silent, an indication that I’ve either misfired or scored a hat-trick. It was the latter. I was told to only explain my situation in writing and provide evidence that I must travel soon. No foreign letter needed.

I returned the next day with my letter and supporting evidence. To my utter dismay, the passport office had no network to check my status. I was amazed, but the officers weren’t. They experience such regularly. No one could do a thing that day. The entire office was practically shut down.

We were all waiting for network when I overheard the officers discussing about a just released promotion list. They’re annoyed that many of the officers who participated in the promotion exercise and passed, without any query, were not promoted, because they’re Southerners. The Northerners, particularly the Hausa-Fulani were massively promoted and posted to promising places. They also complained about the lack of proper documentation in the Nigerian Immigration Service. Many retired and deceased officers name came out as promoted. The officers lastly discussed the new enhanced e-passport and how much they should be charging for ‘assistance’. No amount was agreed. I went home happy. The revelations made my coming worthwhile.

The next day, my officer advised I shouldn’t regenerate my file for one reason: the officers assigned to search files often declare them unfound without conducting any search. The officer collected extra N3,000 from me to tip a new contact in the production room. I was glad I didn’t ask the foreign body for letter and my predicament was earning me uncommon findings.

I later visited the passport office with Dr Akin, an erudite scholar and researcher who just landed in Nigeria. I briefed him of my past findings and tasked him for more. Dr Akin gathered facts from the applicants through informal discussions. His respondents revealed they’re being ‘assisted’ by different officers who charged them between N30,000 to N45,000, instead of N18,000. He briefed me of a septuagenarian who vowed it’s impossible for anyone to procure a passport at the official fee. The old woman shared her desire to see a working Nigeria, but regrets that can’t happen during her lifetime. I got my passport that day, about three months after applying.

The Comptroller General, Nigerian Immigration Service, Muhammad Babandede have to step up his game. He needs to inject more transparency, efficiency, accountability and discipline into the service. More passport offices need to be established and the existing ones should be provided with enough amenities. More seats are needed. Many applicants stood under the sun to collect their passport and the public address system was inaudible. Those in front have to repeat the names being called before others could hear. People were charged N50 for using the lavatory, why?

This piece is an advocacy for efficiency, not vilification. The passport office and persons were deliberately not mentioned. An encounter with me shouldn’t make them the fall guy. What is needed is a holistic reform, not punishing few persons for the wrongs being committed by virtually everyone in the service.

The counsel to Dapo Abiodun Prof. Osipitan clearly admitted that there were irregularities in its client election as submitted/ petitioned by Hon. Adekunle Akinlade counsel with the results from the contentious 34 units. This amounted to 2,394. Fantastic

2. Dapo Abiodun counsel want these figures removed from its client figures which will still give Abiodun a figure of 238,389 to Akinkade 225,434.

3.Though am not a lawyer but with my knowledge of the 2015 amended electoral law, there is a big pit in front of Dapo Abiodun and a cleared road for Akinkade. Why the pit and the cleared road?

4. The electoral law is very clear. Where there are over voting , the entire votes from that unit is cancelled ( and not deducted from the real votes as canvassed by Dapo Abiodun counsel).

5. Therefore, if the spirit and letter of the electoral law is followed, we may have this scenario: Abiodun,-119,849 and Akinkade- 163,198.
6. The above is arrived at if the votes from the contentious units are cancelled. 121,821 and 58,955 votes would have been removed from the declared votes of Abiodun and Akinlade respectively.

7. Curious enough, is the earlier submission of Dapo Abiodun counsel asking the Tribunal to remove 25,302 from its client figures and also remove 15,904 from Akinlade's votes across the 20 LGAs. The counsel believed this will turn the figures to be: APC:216,302 and APM: 206,248.
8. From paragraph 7 above, Dapo Abiodun APC affirmed that it didn't win the election by 19,000+ but just less than 10,000.
8. It is obvious that where justice is allowed to reign AbdulKabir Akinlade may succeed in retrieving his mandate from Dapo Abiodun.

Sack Abiodun and declare me governor, Akinlade tells Ogun tribunal

The governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in the March 9, 2019, election in Ogun State, Adekunle Akinlade, yesterday, asked the election tribunal sitting in Abeokuta to sack Gov. Dapo Abiodun and declare him winner of the poll. Akinlade and his party filed a petition marked EPT/OG/GOV/01/19 on grounds of alleged over-voting

They added that Abiodun lacked the requisite qualification to contest in the election in which he was declared winner by the INEC.

Akinlade, through his lead Counsel, Mike Osuman (SAN), yesterday, adopted his final written address before the Justice Yusuf Halilu-led panel, praying it to disqualify Abiodun, invalidate his victory and return him (Akinlade) as the governor-elect

In adopting the address, Osuman submitted that the governor who was the candidate of the APC, committed “illegality and falsehood” by submitting contradictory certificates to INEC when he contested for a seat in the Senate in 2015 and governorship in 2019.

He said Abiodun’s CF001 of 2015 and that of 2019 marked as exhibits 331 and 331A by the tribunal were characterised by “inconsistency, smacked falsehood thereby falling short of a person occupying office of governor.”

He further said Akinbade was not contesting the qualification of the governor, but rather alleged falsehood committed during submission of CF001 to INEC at different times. He also accused INEC of aiding Abiodun in using “fake documents” to contest the election.

“On grounds of public policy, he must not be allowed to benefit from his illegality or wrongdoing. The second respondent (Abiodun) authored and swore to exhibits 331 and 331A.

The contents of the two, if juxtaposed, show there is falsehood. I urge, that if falsehood is established, the panel should not only disqualify him, but also invalidate his election.

“Therefore, I urge your lordships to invalidate the election and, in his place, return the first petitioner (Akinlade),” Osuman prayed.

In his submission, Abiodun’s lead Counsel, Prof. Taiwo Osipitan (SAN), described the APM’s petition as dead on arrival and urged the tribunal to dismiss it.

Prof. Osipitan submitted that the issue bordering Abiodun’s certificates was a pre-election matter which had already been determined by the court.

Kidnapped DPO allegedly pays N3m to regain freedom

The Divisional Police Officer, Delta State command, who was allegedly kidnapped along Benin-Asaba Expressway on Friday between Onicha-Ugbo and Issele-Uku axis has regained his freedom.
A source at the state police command headquarters in Asaba told the Punch that the victim was freed by his abductors after paying a ransom of N3 million.
The gunmen were said to have shot indiscriminately before whisking the victim away to an unknown destination. The victim, whose name was given as Mr. Okoro is in charge of Galilee Police Station, Ute-Ogbeje community in Ika North East Local Government Area of the state.He reportedly regained his freedom on Sunday after the negotiated ransom was dropped at a designated location for the abductors to pick.

Civil Defence Officer Allegedly Kills 100-Level Student In Bayelsa

A year-one student of the Department of Petrochemical in the Faculty of Engineering at the Niger Delta University simply identified as Obinna, has been shot and killed by a Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) personnel.
The incident happened at Efeke-Ama area of Amassoma community, Southern Ijaw Local Council Area of Bayelsa State, at about 10:30 pm on Saturday.
It was gathered the yet-to-be-identified NSCDC personnel is part of security details attached to a politician and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC).


Confirming the incident via a telephone interview, Mr. Indoni Ingezi, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the institution, said the shot that killed the deceased was an accidental discharge
“Yes, I can confirm the incident but it was off-campus where a security detail miss fired during a political event.”
However, the suspect (officer) has been allegedly arrested by operatives of the Amassoma Police division while the investigations are ongoing.
Efforts to reach the State Police Public Relations Officer, Asinim Butswat, proved abortive at the time of filing this report.

Apple is offering hackers up to $1 million to hack into their iPhones and tell the company how they did it.
The bounty, which was announced by the iPhone-maker at the annual Black Hat hacker convention in Las Vegas, is the company’s biggest ever.
In the past, Apple limited its bug bounty program to a restricted list of friendly hackers, but it has now opened up the reward to everyone.
It will only pay out the top prize for a very specific hack: Hackers will have to show that they can gain remote access to the very core of Apple’s iOS software without needing the target, the phone’s user, to take any action.
Bug bounty programs, in which companies invite hackers to find vulnerabilities in their systems, have become increasingly popular in recent years as a way of preventing criminals from finding and exploiting those flaws first.
And Apple’s $1 million reward is in line with what hackers would likely be paid for uncovering such a bug.
Recently, a group of hackers working for Google’s Project Zero program uncovered a cache of flaws in Apple’s software, which would allow hackers to gain access to your phone simply by sending you a message.
But the Google hackers quietly shared the details with Apple, which fixed the flaws before the details were made public.
