NYSCRe: NYSC Introduces Self-deployment For Prospective Corps Members by Fellonigerians: 1:12pm On Jul 24, 2015
Laredojohn:
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has introduced a self-deployment system to enable prospective corps members choose where they wish to serve.

This was part of resolutions at the end of the 2015 Batch ‘B’ pre-mobilisation workshop which held in Kaduna.

Similarly, pregnant women, nursing mothers and students undergoing postgraduate studies have been banned from participating in the scheme until they are free to enlist for the service.

The NYSC, in a communique issued at the end of the meeting, said the new system of self-deployment is aimed at addressing the fraudulent activities associated with the previous method of deploying prospective corps members.

“In a bid to tackle the problem of deluge of concessional requests with which the NYSC is being inundated, prospective corps members will henceforth be given the opportunity to choose states of their choice outside their socio-cultural and linguistic areas, using ICT,” the communique said.

It added: “Given the negative implications of assigning invalid or wrong Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) numbers to prospective corps members during the mobilisation process, corps-producing institutions have been advised to always take advantage of the window of opportunity created by the JAMB and regularise the admission of their graduates and advise the affected graduates to activate such numbers before presenting them for mobilisation.

“For us to bring administration nearer to everybody, complaints and issues arising from the online registration from prospective corps members and corps producing institutions will henceforth be lodged with the Deployment and Relocation officers at the NYSC state secretariats for onward transmission to the ICT department for necessary action.

“It was further resolved that pregnant women and nursing mothers and students engaged in postgraduate studies should not bother to enlist for service until they are free to participate effectively.”

The Director General of NYSC, Brig.- Gen. Johnson Olawumi, had on Wednesday at the opening of the workshop announced that henceforth, prospective corps members with First Class degrees and their counterparts who graduated with distinction from the polytechnics, would be posted to the universities for their primary assignments.

The workshop was attended by directors and heads of units at the NYSC, as well as representatives of stakeholders in the education sector which include the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), JAMB, the Nigerian Army, universities, polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education.

TravelRe: Dubai Hotel Management Apologises After Staff Refuses To Serve A Nigerian Woman by Fellonigerians: 6:07pm On Jul 16, 2015

A Nigerian woman named Hanna Fanni was discriminated against at a hotel in Dubai on July 8th. The hotel staff at five-star hotel Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach refused to serve her and showed her the door when she visited the hotel's popular West Beach Bistro & Sports Lounge with her black American friend. The outraged Nigerian said what they did to them reminded her of 1930s America.

"They suspected us of being prostitutes and targeted us solely because of the colour of our skin. I have lived here for 10 years and have never been treated in such a disrespectful and despicable manner." Hannah said

“My friend had just graduated and we were hoping to enjoy a girls’ night out at the bar but came back traumatised. First the waitress refused to serve us and then a security guard ordered us to leave the hotel. At one stage he was ready to engage with us physically which is classified as assault and sexual harassment in UAE. He kept telling us that the bar didn’t allow unaccompanied women. I found it strange because there were several tables occupied by women. When I pointed to them, he said he was merely following orders.” Hannah said

Hannah said as things got heated, the bar manager intervened.

“I showed him my business card. When he saw it, his face contorted in panic as it dawned on him that they had racially profiled the wrong people. But instead of making amends, he said the security guard had asked us to leave as some black women had come in earlier and solicited their guests. I was stunned. Just because some black women had approached their guests, the hotel assumed we were also prostitutes.”

Hannah said, realizing their mistake, the hotel tried to make amend but they were so humiliated they had to leave

“On the way out, I stopped at the front desk and sought to speak to the duty manager but he refused to meet us. Instead a female staff came out and tried to hush up the matter saying ‘Obama is the President of US’ as if that had anything to do with us. I want the management of the hotel to realise that this isn’t 1930. This is 2015. You cannot walk up to random black women and tell them you will not serve them because they are black. I am completely flabbergasted that in this day and age the policy of an international chain is to not allow people into their bars because of the colour of their skin,” she said

Hannah, who heads an events management company later wrote to management of the hotel, asking for an apology. And they did apologize to her, calling it an unfortunate incident.

"The incident occurred purely due to the misunderstanding of the employees and we would like to clarify that there is no such management policy existent in the hotel. Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach welcomes and respect each and every guest and this incident in no way reflects our true standards of service. An official apology letter from the hotel management and employees involved has also been sent to the guest.” the management said

One of the major problem is that majority of our graduates dont work until the finish University... In other countries where opportunities exist, from 18yrs you can start having summer jobs... When you now graduate, and apply for a job, you can also be assessed based on your work experience...

People are forced to stay under the control of their parents until they finish school, maybe at 40yrs... Not allowed to be on their own

PoliticsRe: NASS Crisis May Lead To Buhari’s Impeachment – Lawyer by Fellonigerians: 3:48pm On Jul 01, 2015
MeesterMAN:
An Abia State-based constitutional lawyer and human rights activist, Dr. Anthony Agbazuere, has warned the leadership of the ruling All Progressive Congress to treat with caution, the leadership crisis rocking the National Assembly, saying it can consume both APC and President Muhammadu Buhari if not carefully handled.

Agbazuere, who gave the warning Wednesday at a press conference in Umuahia, advised APC hierarchy to “swallow their pride and accept Senator Olusola Saraki and Hon. Yakubu Dogora as Senate President, and Speaker of the House of Representatives respectively in the interest of the party and to move Nigeria forward.”

He said any attempt by APC to plot the impeachment of Saraki and Dogara “will not only fail but destroy APC.”

Agbazuere further said APC must stop threatening Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, saying his emergence “is a bitter pill which the APC must swallow to survive.”

His said, “APC must not forget that the same structure which brought Saraki also brought Ekweremadu on board, and the Senators in this alliance are greater in number.

“An attempt to threaten them may even lead to the impeachment of either President Buhari or both Buhari and his Vice, Professor Yemi Osibanjo. The implications are obvious.”

Agbazuere warned APC to stop all forms of interference in the affairs of the National Assembly to avoid rocking its boat.

Fielding questions on the controversy over the actual number of months Abia workers were owed under the immediate – past administration of ex- Governor Theodore Orji, where he served as Commissioner for Information, Agbazuere said “staff of all Ministries in the state long received their April salary before Orji bowed out.”

He debunked media reports that the state owed workers up to nine months salaries, describing such reports as “mischievous, misleading and intended by the peddlers to tarnish the image of both the past and present administration in the state.”
