Culture / Re: 131-year-old "Iya Orisa" Living Under Olumo Rock - Photos by Ferebiekun: 8:32am On Apr 05, 2016 |
Ignorant tourist guides at Olumo Rock including these old self-made historians will forever continue to deceive tourists with their made up history of Egba people and the rock. I am always astonished that these lies about Egba people hiding in "caves" under the rock continue to captivate tourists. How many people could the said caves have provided safety for? What war exactly was waged by the Egbas after the founding of Abeokuta in 1830 that the new settlers had to hide under the rock? The Olumo Rock truly holds a special place in the history of Abeokuta and its founders, the Egba people. It is the symbol of their rest after surviving many civil wars waged among different Yoruba tribes and clans. The rock is at the center of the historic settlement of the town after fleeing the Egba Forest and other places. However, it was never a hiding place for a people numbering thousands on their arrival and settlement of the surrounding land. Abeokuta, the "new" city of the Egbas has a rich history that I cannot possibly do justice to here. It is true that the rock has been more or less deified. It is equally true that there are worshippers of several traditional deities at Olumo. They may be regarded as the custodians of their religion, but they are no historians. They do not also live in or under the rock. They are indigines living in the neighborhood of the rock. And most of what they tell you about the historic rock and city of Abeokuta is nothing short of concocted myths and fantasies of their imagination. 2 Likes 1 Share |
Politics / Re: Meaning Of The Arabic Word On Nigerian Army Logo by Ferebiekun: 9:23am On Dec 13, 2015 |
Why make a mountain out of a molehill? The Latin alphabet that we and many other peoples of the world have adopted as their writing system is not the only orthography available to write a language. Many institutions of learning, from primary school to university, write their motto not only using the Latin alphabet but in Latin language. Meaning you, as a responsible and curious student, are expected to LEARN what the "mysterious inscription" means. And if we're to unnecessarily complicate the issue we would argue that Latin as an ancient language is synonymous to Christianity. Should we then jump to the conclusion that any institution that uses Latin inscriptions for whatever purpose is religiously biased? Moreover, the so-called Muslim or Arabic inscription is written using Ajami, one of the writing systems in the northern and eastern parts of Africa. It's not uncommon to have a single language codified using different writing systems. So, next time you want to label someone an illiterate, ask yourself how many writing systems can YOU READ. Writing down a language does not start and end at using the popular A B C. 1 Like |
Religion / Re: COZA Church Gifts Widows Materials (Photos) by Ferebiekun: 11:46am On Dec 12, 2015 |
bayooooooo: it's the same one. The randy Pastor is still expecting divine go-ahead before giving the "robust response". Meanwhile, I remember reading somewhere in the Bible to give charity in private. A sincere gift to the needy should not be used to humiliate them. When you give wholeheartedly, you must consider the dignity of the beneficiary. This colorful publicity is nothing but a pretence at caring for the widows. |

As self-evident as the above "testimony" is, some very desperate individuals might fall victim. Be warned. Aside from the tragic similarity of the senseless murder, the details here, name of the lunatic police killer for instance, are different from what I read in Punch. All the same, these drunks and drug addicts in uniform (all uniforms ) really need to be weeded out of the services. It is getting out hand. |

Politics / Re: Bukola Saraki Is The Judas Iscariot Of Nigeria By Dr. Wumi Akintide by Ferebiekun: 12:19pm On Jun 10, 2015 |
I refuse to believe a doctor wrote this article. The fallacies committed in such a short write-up are shocking. The arguments are more expression of sentiments than facts, or attempts at presenting facts. The writer jumped from one accusation to another without convincingly showing how they're related. For instance, what is the correlation between Buhari's alleged silence on the fate of the condemned soldiers and is labelling Saraki a Judas? Or his offhand dismissal of the country's constitution as obnoxious?! 1 Like |

FrancisTony: You will be amazed at how deluded you're with your permutation of being a cheat and ending up having an unfaithful partner. Men and women do not ordinarily cheat their partners because their partners have been discovered cheating them. They cheat because they have the urge and opportunity to have "fun" outside their marital vows. 2 Likes |

Who is Seun Kuti? That arrogant, weed-smoking, self-opinionated ignoramus. His opinion does not matter in anything like this innocent act of faith. Kneeling or standing to pray is an act of devotion, NOT a message of who or what you're. Suggesting it as some form of racism as the so-called musician would have us believe is nothing short of symptoms of drug abuse! It's only a warped mind that could read such meaning into a decent photograph. 1 Like |

When the innocent children are found or rescued (and they will be found), those nitwits must be prosecuted for their carelessness and shirking their responsibility as parents. Those children are put in this dreadful situation because the parents cherished their own convenience above the security and safety of the children. Politics / Re: Social Media Reactions To Aisha Buhari Statement On Edo Prostitutes by Ferebiekun: 7:17am On Mar 21, 2015 |
Who in Nigeria does not know that Edo girls/ladies symbolize international prostitution ring? Why the pretence and petty denial that many "Italian prostitutes" are illegal immigrants from Nigeria. Some Edo families of the "successful ladies" are even proud to show off the wealth of their daughters. That said, many young women are lured or forced into prostitution here and abroad. There are countless bitter tales of such unlucky females; some have been fortunately rescued, while many lost their souls and humanity to one of the oldest professions in the world. Obviously, something must be done about. A fight against prostitution is a fight against human trafficking and hard drug crimes. That is no insult to Edo people, but a call to stop their ladies from selling "flesh" here and abroad. And for those that can read between the lines, that is a call on every Nigerian parent/guardian to fight prostitution in whatever form it takes. |

Politics / We Need Power Supply Timetable by Ferebiekun: 3:41pm On Feb 08, 2015 |
I am tired of being told that, at least, our politicians and leaders travel overseas and they see how things are done there. I do not agree that an intelligent human being has to go to another country before he knows the right things that need to be done. Where do Americans, French, Swiss, Germans, Swedes and Canadians travel to before they keep bringing so much development to bear on their countries? It is very absurd to continue to make that statement, especially in the light of the fact that the so-called leaders and followers have been to all these countries and more, yet, they are not doing what they have seen done over there. So, we should stop repeating that insulting statement. We do not have to go abroad and experience availability of 24 hours light before we know that the normal thing is to have light throughout the day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, 365 days to 365 days. I am angry that I live in the 21st century and in a city where it is now ‘normal’ to boast about the size of your generating set! Where you casually introduce into conversation the amount you spend weekly on fuelling your generator the same way others show off brandishing iphones, Android and Blackberry devices that they hardly know how to use! We are intelligent people living in a modern world. Why can’t we live in cities that are terribly clean and have amenities that make life ever more comfortable? Why can’t I decide to relocate and live in a village knowing well that every facility that I enjoy in the city are equally available there? I know how much money and effort many civil servants expend to bribe their way out of transfers to ‘remote areas.’ That wouldn’t have been the case if things work in this country. The irony of it is that, for now, there is hardly any difference living in a Nigerian city and a village where provision of social amenities is concerned. If we are not going to have that 24 hours of light in this country, at least, the power companies – whatever names they go by- should make it a matter of policy to let us know the amount of light we should expect from them daily, weekly or monthly. They are now private enterprises managed by, I believe, trained and experienced personnel. They can let us have a Power Supply Timetable. This can be printed on the bill they religiously distribute every month. If I am going to continue having 24 hours of light every month, I deserve to know when I am going to get it so that I can plan ahead how I am going to use it. We are in a civilized world, aren’t we? It can be done. And it should be done. If however they find printing the Power Supply Timetable bothersome, they could send regular SMS to alert us. They can charge us for it! Trust Nigerian commercial mindset! Then, the companies need to embark on a sensitization campaign. They need to orient us, the consumers, that we should stop shouting ‘Up NEPA!’ in celebration of ‘flashing’ us with the long awaited light after hours of darkness, heat and boredom. People really need to stop it. One, NEPA is long dead. And more importantly, there is nothing ‘up’ about denying us the light for days only to give us two or three hours of it, is there? They also need to educate us that we should stop telling them, though in their absence, that ‘They even tried!’ after taking the light. It is so unnecessary and must be quite embarrassing for the companies. Abi, which ‘try’ have they tried giving three hours of light for a whole day which may still end up being the only time in the week or even months in some areas right in this Nigeria? It is as terrible as that. What ‘try’ have they tried if our communities still have to task residents to contribute money to buy transformers, and for installation of same?! We need that timetable. 1 Like |
