I am a very sensitive person. I notice little changes in my body, even things someone else might easily overlook. But what I experienced this time became too serious to ignore.

I created this Nairaland account specifically to share my experience while protecting my anonymity. I would rather keep my personal details private, but I feel this is serious enough to speak about.

Around the time I bought a new foam mattress, I started experiencing several troubling symptoms. These included tingling, pain under my feet, general body weakness and foamy urine.

I also had ulcer-like or gastritis-like symptoms. I received treatment for ulcer, stopped eating pepper and gave up alcohol completely. My tests were negative for H. pylori, but the stomach discomfort remained a concern.

There was also this weak or heavy feeling on the side of my body I normally sleep on. I could still grip things and move normally, but if I held my phone to my ear with that arm, it would get tired quickly and I would have to change hands.

At the height of it, I started shaking. I couldn’t even balance properly on one foot. I underwent several medical investigations, including urinalysis, a stool test, an ECG and a full blood count.

My fiancée has also mentioned muscle pulls, tingling in her hands and pain under her leg, although her symptoms were much milder than mine. She only slept on the mattress occasionally and never connected her symptoms to it. Looking back at my own experience, I now suspect there may be a connection in her case too. I wonder whether her less frequent use could explain the difference, but neither has been confirmed.

For a long time, I didn’t connect any of this to the mattress.

I noticed that whenever I travelled and stayed in a hotel, I felt better. On separate occasions when I slept on the couch in my parlour, I also felt better. At the time, I didn’t understand why.

More recently, I slept in the guest room in my house for about a week, and my symptoms stopped completely, including the tingling and pain under my feet.

Something else surprised me: after about one year of avoiding pepper because of the stomach symptoms, I could eat it again without the discomfort I had previously experienced—after just one week of sleeping away from the mattress.

At first, I thought something in my bedroom was responsible. So I brought the same mattress out to the parlour and slept on it there.

The symptoms started coming back.

That was when I looked back and realised that the symptoms had first appeared around the time I bought the mattress.

After that, I compared what happened on a few more occasions when I slept on other mattresses and when I slept on this particular one. The same pattern kept showing up: I felt well on the other mattresses, but the symptoms returned when I slept on the new one.

That repeated experience is why I now strongly suspect something about this mattress. It wasn’t just a matter of changing rooms—the symptoms seemed to follow the mattress.

I haven’t had it professionally tested, so I cannot say whether the issue involves its materials, chemical emissions, the support it provides or something else. These observations, including the improvement in my stomach symptoms, do not establish the medical cause. A manufacturing defect has not been confirmed either.

I won’t mention the brand for now. My reason for posting is to ask: has anybody here experienced something similar after buying a mattress recently?

Did you notice unusual pains, tingling, muscle cramps, weakness or stomach discomfort? Did the symptoms stop when you slept elsewhere? Did a doctor identify the cause, or were you able to have the mattress tested?

Please share your firsthand experience. I am concerned that, if there is a product-related problem, other people could be experiencing symptoms without noticing a connection. That possibility deserves proper investigation.

Please seek medical attention for symptoms such as weakness, shaking or difficulty balancing. Similar symptoms can have different causes. I also wouldn’t advise anyone to repeatedly sleep on a suspected mattress to test it.

it is the matrass, some years back after recovering from serious ulcer pains cause I was eating the wrong stuffs , I did notbhave too much options where I was based , when I got back to lagos the first week I spent at my friend's house I was having so much discomfort and the matrass was new but it was too hard when I later moved into a hotel I was sleeping properly ,it is the matrass

Don't mind those illiterates and and fabble tellers,its very common even in naija,I have seen cars parked for upto 3 months at MM1 ikeja and the guys there where saying the owners will cone back and won't mind paying the park charges......same way a guy booked an hotel room at my friend's hotel for 6 months stretch he is abroad but the room is being kept for him.

very true I have even seen my friends car parked at the airport local airport for that matter I called him thinking he was some where around I chatted him up and he told me he was out of the country but would be back soon , He said it was safer for him to park it there since it was a short trip

yes it is like that in most part of lagos , even the area you grew up in once you leave there for awhile and come back you see kds that were given birth to right before your eyes harassing you unless someone that knows you very well come to tell them who you are . At this rate it is going lagos will become less desireable for the visitors and residents in the next couple of years . Just imagine avoiding going to your area because of all this kind of behaviour it is really bad , gone are the days you always want to go back to these areas no matter where you have relocated too cause you always feel at home

what he said there is no lie in it , i was born and raised in lagos my university education was in lagos and to be specific bariga i moved out of lagos after my nysc and i visit lagos regularly i do most of my shopping in balogun market , the last time i visited the market in person i almost got into a fight cause of this whole begging thing it is not even begging anymore they make it look like a compulsory tax i know my way around balogun i dont need anyone to show me . I think access bank should use this medium to attend to complains , I love the hank so much and have been with them for over 15 years now and the other one I like also came together with them but lately their customer service is not really nice till now I am having problems transferring money despite me dedicating a full day to visit their branch to increase my limit for transfer before leaving for my medical trip only for me ro get to my destination limit was not increased and the transfer stuff stopped working totally I am still battling with the matter if they see this message I would appreciate I'd they do a follow up with me

yes access bank is big on this let me share my story and till date thry have not resolved it , before leaving the country for a medical trip I went to the local branch I use to ask them to increase my transfer limit from 1m to 5m I spent hours at the bank and I was assured everything was OK fast forward to when I got to my destination I could not even use the account to transfer anything and I had urgent medical bills to offset I could only use ussd with daily limit of 99k up till today it has remained like that
