Foreign AffairsDrone Attack On Syrian Base Housing US Troops Kills Six Kurdish Fighters by Fineman2(op): 4:12pm On Feb 05, 2024
A drone attack on a Syrian base housing U.S. troops killed at least six Kurdish fighters late Sunday. The attack marked the first in Iraq or Syria since the U.S. launched retaliatory strikes against Iranian-backed groups after three U.S. service members were killed in a deadly drone strike in Jordan last month. The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), backed by the U.S., said Sunday's attack struck a training ground at the al-Omar base in Syria's eastern province of Deir el-Zour, The Associated Press reported. No U.S. troops were reported killed in the attack, the AP noted. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella organization of militias backed by Iran, claimed responsibility for the latest attack in a video message. The same group had claimed responsibility for the attack in Jordan late last month.

The SDF had initially blamed "Syrian regime-backed mercenaries" for the attack on Sunday but later said "Iran-backed militias" were responsible after an investigation. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based organization that tracks developments in Syria, said seven SDF members were killed with at least another 18 injured. This attack comes as the White House is warning Iran that there will be further retaliation if Iran-backed militias continue their attacks. National security adviser Jake Sullivan made the rounds on morning news shows on Sunday, warning that the recent U.S. retaliatory strikes in Iraq and Syria are "not the end of it."

It began with strikes on Friday night, but that is not the end of it. We intend to take additional strikes and additional action to continue to send a clear message that the United States will respond when our forces are attacked, or people are killed," Sullivan told NBC News anchor Kristen Welker on "Meet the Press." Separately, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said late Sunday that U.S. forces conducted a self-defense strike in Yemen against a Houthi land attack cruise missile. CENTCOM said the U.S. struck four anti-ship cruise missiles that were preparing to launch against ships in the Red Sea.

Eighty-two-year-old Dr. Nangolo Mbumba has been sworn in as the fourth President.

Mbumba is Namibia’s former Vice President and has held the position since 2018.

He was sworn in on Sunday by Chief Justice Peter Shivute in Windhoek, the country’s capital.

Born on August 15, 1941, Mbumba is a member of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO). He headed several Namibian ministries: Agriculture, Water and Rural Development (1993–1996), Finance (1996–2003), Information and Broadcasting (2003–2005) Education (2005–2010) and Safety and Security (2010–2012).

From 2012 to 2017, he was the secretary-general of SWAPO.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that the Namibian government had announced that President Geingob died on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at Lady Pohamba Hospital, a private hospital in Windhoek.

He died at 82 weeks after he was diagnosed with cancer.

The former Acting President, Mbumba, who announced the death of the late President on Sunday, said the nation had lost its pillar and the chief architect of its constitution.

According to him, the President died despite the best efforts of his medical team to ensure his recovery.

Mbumba said the President’s wife, Monica Geingos and his children were by his side when he passed on.

In his condolence message on Sunday, Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu described the late Namibian President as a veteran in the struggle for democracy, a proponent of good governance and an advocate for economic, social and political solidarity among African peoples.

President Tinubu wrote, “On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, I extend our deepest condolences to the government and people of Namibia over the passing of His Excellency, President Hage Geingob.

“I mourn the painful loss of a veteran in the struggle for democracy, a proponent of good governance, and an advocate for economic, social, and political solidarity among African peoples.

“This tragedy comes at a time when Africa is in dire need of more visionary leaders who believe in our common destiny and who can strengthen the bonds across our borders and spread the tendrils of cooperation in all fields of human endeavour.

As Namibia mourns, I want to assure that the Republic that my thoughts and prayers, and indeed those of all Namibians, are with you.”

LADY WHO ASKS HER BOYFRIEND WHO EARNS 60,000NAIRA TO WAIT TILL HE GETS BETTER JOB BEFORE THEY GET MARRIED, RECEIVES INVITATION TO HIS WEDDING TO ANOTHER WOMAN

I am a 26year old lady. My 35 year old boyfriend and I have been dating for close to 5years. I love him so much as he really gets me and I strongly believe he is my soulmate. He has been talking about us getting married before the end of the year. I told him about how we need to be more financially stable before thinking about getting married. His salary is 60,000naira while mine is 70,000naira.

He said he has been making moves and plans as he feels marriage is the right step to take in our lives. I insisted on we waiting awhile longer as the economic situation in this country does not make it wise for us to start a family this way. This led to a huge fight. We did not speak for 4days. When he came to my house the 4th day to apologize, he asked if I had changed my mind. I said no. So we made up and continued our relationship. That was June last year.

However, few days ago, one of our mutual friends sent me invitation card of his wedding. This man that I have persevered with for 5years is getting married to another woman in April and is still behaving as if all is well. Why would he do this to me? Was he deceiving me all along? How was he able to hide a whole serious relationship from me? Was I wrong? Can I still get my man back? I don’t even know how to feel or what to do. Please advise me.

Belgium on Friday summoned the Israeli ambassador in the country over Israeli forces’ bombing of the Belgian Development Agency in the Gaza Strip.

“The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hadja Lahbib, summoned the Israeli Ambassador to Belgium, H.E. Idit Rosenzweig-Abu, to the Foreign Affairs Cabinet. The meeting took place in the presence of the Minister of Development Cooperation, Caroline Gennez,” said the Belgian Foreign Ministry in a statement.

“On behalf of Belgium, the ministers strongly condemned the bombing and destruction of the offices of Enabel, the Belgian development agency, in Gaza,” it added.

Stressing that the destruction of civilian infrastructure is absolutely unacceptable and violates international law, the ministry said: "The violence must stop. Belgium calls for an immediate ceasefire by all parties, permanent and unhindered access for humanitarian aid and the immediate and unconditional release of the hostages."

The ministry also repeated the call for resumption of the peace process and political negotiations that could lead to a two-state solution.

“Belgium will put the issue of compensation for the damaged infrastructure of projects financed by the EU and its Member States back on the agenda of a subsequent European consultation,” it also warned.

Since Israel began its campaign against Gaza nearly four months ago, dozens of countries and international humanitarian groups have decried the bombing of hospitals, civilian housing, and houses of worship – all places off limits to attacks under the rules of war.

Israel has killed more than 27,000 people in the Gaza Strip in response to the Oct. 7 cross-border offensive by Hamas, which took the lives of 1,200 people and took 240 as hostages.

The military onslaught has caused mass displacement and destruction and created conditions ripe for famine.

Foreign AffairsUK Could Recognize Palestinian State Before Any Deal With Israel, Says David Cam by Fineman2(op): 12:11pm On Feb 02, 2024
U.K.’s top diplomat says recognition “can’t come at the start of the process, but it doesn’t have to be the very end of the process.

LONDON – The U.K. could officially recognize a Palestinian state without waiting for any Israeli-Palestinian talks on a two-state solution to bear fruit, Britain’s foreign secretary said.

David Cameron, who this week talked up U.K. recognition of a Palestinian state at the United Nations in a significant shift of British government policy, said no such move could come while Hamas remains in Gaza.

But he made clear that the U.K. could offer recognition without protracted talks between Israeli and Palestinian leaders on a two-state solution coming to a head. Such talks appear a distant prospect given staunch opposition from Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu to the idea as his country wages an assault on Gaza following deadly attacks by Hamas.

Speaking to reporters on a trip to Lebanon Thursday, Cameron said U.K. recognition of an independent Palestinian state “can’t come at the start of the process, but it doesn’t have to be the very end of the process.”

“It could be something that we consider as this process, as this advance to a solution, becomes more real,” Cameron said.

“What we need to do is give the Palestinian people a horizon towards a better future, the future of having a state of their own,” he said, adding that recognition of a Palestinian state is “absolutely vital for the long-term peace and security of the region.”

Cameron is back from a tour of the Middle East to try and push a five-point plan to quell the latest war between Israel and Hamas.

The U.K. is among those continuing to argue that a two-state solution is the only viable long-term solution to the conflict. But such a proposal faces fierce resistance from Netanyahu and members of his government. The Israeli prime minister has called for “full Israeli security control over the entire area in the west of Jordan,” a move he made clear is “contrary to a Palestinian state.”

The U.K. government has previously said only that it will “recognize a Palestinian state at a time when it best serves the objective of peace” and has rejected calls from British lawmakers to go further.

This is a welcome development, even though it will not change anything.

I know some Nigerians will come out to spill gibberish now since this move is against their so-called God chosen nation
Foreign AffairsUS Government Imposes Sanctions On Israeli Settlers Accused Of West Bank Violenc by Fineman2(op): 7:24am On Feb 02, 2024
The United States government has imposed sanctions on four Israeli men it accused of being involved in settler violence in the West Bank, signalling growing US displeasure with the policies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Key points:

° The US State Department froze the assets of four settlers accused of committing violence against Palestinians in the West Bank

° Mr Netanyahu described the sanctions as necessary

°Israel's finance minister described the campaign against settler violence as an "anti-Semitic lie"

US President Joe Biden issued an executive order on Thursday that aims to punish Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, where Palestinians envisage a future state.

The order establishes a system for imposing financial sanctions and visa restrictions against individuals who attack or intimidate Palestinians or seize their property, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said in a statement.

"Today's actions seek to promote peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians alike," he said.

United Nations figures show that daily settler attacks have more than doubled in the nearly four months since Palestinian Hamas militants on October 7 carried out a terrorist attack on Israel and Israel responded with an assault on the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.

The State Department sanctions freeze the US assets of the four men and generally bar Americans from dealing with them.

A State Department statement said:

1. David Chai Chasdai initiated and led a riot that included setting vehicles and buildings on fire and causing damage to property in Huwara, resulting in the death of a Palestinian civilian.

2. Einan Tanjil assaulted Palestinian farmers and Israeli activists by attacking them with stones and clubs, resulting in injuries that required medical treatment.

3. Shalom Zicherman, according to video evidence, assaulted Israeli activists and their vehicles in the West Bank, blocking them on the street, attempted to break the windows of passing vehicles with activists inside, and cornered at least two of the activists and injured both.

4. Yinon Levi led a group of settlers that assaulted Palestinian and Bedouin civilians, burned their fields and destroyed their property.

"Israel must do more to stop violence against civilians in the West Bank and hold accountable those responsible for it," US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a separate statement.

"The United States will continue to take actions to advance the foreign policy objectives of the United States, including the viability of a two-state solution, and is committed to the safety, security, and dignity of Israelis and Palestinians alike

Biden and other senior US officials have warned repeatedly that Israel must act to stop violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank.

Mr Biden has raised the issue directly with Mr Netanyahu, said one senior official, as the US president seeks a path to a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians once the Gaza conflict ends.

Mr Netanyahu, who heads a religious-rightist coalition, has resisted US entreaties to develop a plan for post-conflict Gaza and to embrace a peace deal that envisages Israeli and Palestinian states side by side.

Mr Netanyahu's office on Thursday responded to the US steps by saying they were unnecessary.

"Israel takes action against all law-breakers everywhere, and therefore there is no need for unusual measures on the issue," it said in a statement.

The West Bank, among the territories where Palestinians seek statehood along with Gaza, has experienced a surge of violence in recent months amid expanding Jewish settlements and a nearly decade-old impasse in US-sponsored peacemaking.

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, head of the far-right pro-settlement party Religious Zionism, was defiant in a statement on Mr Biden's order:

"The 'settler violence' campaign is an anti-Semitic lie that enemies of Israel disseminate with the goal of smearing the pioneering settlers and settlement enterprise, and to harm them and thus smear the entire State of Israel," Mr Smotrich said.

In December, the United States began imposing visa bans on people involved in violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Since the 1967 Middle East war, Israel has occupied the West Bank of the Jordan River, which Palestinians want as the core of an independent state.

It has built Jewish settlements there that most countries deem illegal. Israel disputes this and cites historical and biblical ties to the land.

Every country has the right to do what they want
Foreign AffairsIran Begins Construction On Four More Nuclear Power Plants by Fineman2(op): 1:59pm On Feb 01, 2024

Iran has begun construction on four more nuclear power plants in the country's south, with expected total capacity of 5,000 megawatts, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Iran seeks to produce 20,000 megawatts of nuclear energy by 2041.

The country has one active nuclear power plant, a 1,000 megawatt plant that went online with help from Russia in 2011. It's also building a 300-megawatt plant in oil-rich Khuzestan province, near the western border with Iraq.

The UN's nuclear watchdog said last year that Iran has increased the rate at which it is producing near-weapons grade uranium.

Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in the report that Iran "in recent weeks had increased its production of highly enriched uranium, reversing a previous output reduction from mid-2023," according to an IAEA spokesperson.

Iran had previously slowed the rate at which it was enriching uranium to 60 percent purity, which is just a short technical step away from the weapons-grade level of 90 percent.

The West has long suspected that Iran is acquiring nuclear weapons. Iran denies it is seeking such weapons.

IRNA quoted Mohammad Eslami, the head of Iran's atomic agency, saying it will take up to nine years to complete the new plants.

The report said the four new plants are being built in the port town of Sirik on Iran's east coast, some 1,150 kilometres (715 miles) south of the capital, Tehran.

Nasser Shariflou, the head of the project, told IRNA that the project will cost some $20 billion and will create 4,000 jobs. Each plant is expected to use 35 tonnes of nuclear fuel per year.

Joe Biden is weighing up launching strikes on Iranian military assets in the Persian Gulf after three Americans were killed in Jordan by a Tehran-backed drone. The president has demanded advisors present him with options on how to respond to the attack without dragging the US into battle in the Middle East, Politico reports. Insiders revealed any revenge bombings will taken place in the coming days as the commander-in-chief and military brass study a range of targets.

Fears of war were sparked over the weekend when an Iran-backed drone killed three American soldiers at a remote base near Jordan's border with Syria. The victims were named on Monday as specialist Kennedy Ladon Sanders (pictured left), 24, specialist Breonna Moffett (pictured right), 23, and sergeant William Rivers (pictured center), 46. Iran-backed militias, calling themselves the Axis of Resistance, have also launched more than 160 strikes on US targets since the October 7 terror attack by Hamas. It comes at a delicate time for the White House, with Biden not seen out and about on Monday after sparking health fears due to a bumbling speech in South Carolina.

Meanwhile Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has only recently returned to the office after going AWOL to have prostate cancer surgery. On Sunday, the Axis claimed responsibility for the attack on the outpost in Jordan, saying it was a 'continuation of our approach to resisting the American occupation forces in Iraq and the region.' Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said on Monday the militias 'do not take orders' from Iran and act independently. But Tehran is widely known to be the driving force for the attacks on the U.S. targets. Biden's own aides, according to The New York Times, admit the efforts to hit targets in the region in response to drone and missile attacks - to 'restore deterrence,' the administration says - have failed.

The president, who was not publicly seen on Monday, but was shown in White House photos meeting his advisers, has ordered his team to draw up a list of options for retaliation. Politico reported that they include attacking Iranian personnel in Syria or Iraq, or Iranian naval assets in the Persian Gulf. Iran has suggested any strikes within Iran itself would cross a red line. Former CIA chief of staff Jeremy Bash said escalation is 'unavoidable'. He said: Biden 'cannot avoid the international challenges even in an election year.' He added: 'There is a sense that our deterrence measures to date have not been received by Tehran as we hoped, so escalation is unavoidable

Once Biden has made his call, retaliation would likely begin a few days later and come in waves, against a range of targets. Campaign officials hope that the 81-year-old president, who spent six years as head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and has deep relationships with many key players in the Middle East, will impress wavering voters with his calm and competence. The Pentagon and State Department have spent decades drawing up scenarios and creating lists of possible targets. The New York Times reported that the U.S. has identified the major drone-making factories, and their overseas suppliers, which are working to help Russia in Ukraine, and providing armaments to the Houthis in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon. The working assumption of American officials, the paper said, is that Sunday's attack was by an Iranian-made drone.

The Pentagon has existing plans for potential strikes on Iranian missile sites and air bases, in case a conflict broke out between Iran and Israel. Israel has been carrying out high-profile bombing runs, practicing attacks on the Natanz nuclear site and the underground facility at Fordow. The U.S. has even formulated a cyberattack option against Iran, code-named 'Nitro Zeus,' the New York Times reported. The cyberattack would disable Iran's air defenses, communications systems and crucial parts of its power grid. Republicans, led by Trump, are demanding Biden take decisive action. Trump backed away from attacking Iran in November 2020, shortly after the election. He asked for options on attacking Iran's main nuclear site, a day after a U.N. watchdog report showed Iran had finished moving a first cascade of advanced centrifuges from an above-ground plant at its main uranium enrichment site to an underground one, in a fresh breach of its 2015 nuclear deal with major powers.
