every semester, three of my textbooks are compulsory you buy from the department... $268 each. then i buy from India via online.
pchax:

Baba... We no dey use textbook as such in my field and my program but they go kill you with research papers. We also have free access to some top libraries where we can get papers, journals and SOME textbooks for free if need be. I guess that is how in most schools for people in a research program.
Nevertheless, I sympathize with you on the 1k/semester. That is pretty "criminal". You guys can find a way of circumnavigating that price naaa. Maybe look for the books online or like 5 of you should come together, 4 out of the 5 contribute the money for one book and the 5th person scans it for the rest of the group. I don't know your system shaaa but formula suppose dey smiley

Culture / Re: Why Do Igbos Especially The Anambrans Marry From Their Tribe? by Finestlex(m): 6:14am On Feb 23, 2015
the issue of igbos getting married to igbos, yoruba to yoruba and so on is because, we tend to flow more with people from our tribe.. check your friends and see that majority are from your state.. this is common if you're based in Naija.. You get to meet a lot of people from different parts of the world.. its undisputed Canada is a proud multi-cultural nation.. if you talking about being tribalistic, "SALUTE CHINESE FOLKS" ndi igbo kwenu.. unu omere mkpole!!
Travel / Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by Finestlex(m): 5:40am On Feb 23, 2015
you didnt add money for textbooks.. cos i spend $1k + every semester on textbooks.. abi your school na free textbooks? my house rent is $450/m. the truth is, you CAN'T hustle and raise your tuition fees.. a semester is just 3months+. how do you intend to raise $6k5 = N1.1m as a full-time student? even under table wont raise it. unless you're totally out of school... Canada is a nice place no doubt.. Canada needs your money.. you pay tax on daily living of things you purchase. even ordinary salt and pepper..
pchax:

Firstly, congrats on your admission. I do not know much about #2 but I believe it depends on the person and how much the said fees is and even the program and also scholarships. When it comes to money matters, a lot of variables are involved. Not to dampen your Spirits, I would advice you do your calculations very well. Minimum wage is around $10 or $11/hr here (not really sure). You have 20 hours to work when enrolled. Even if you collect pay under the table, multiply your min wage by tops 50 hours/week. See if it offsets your fees and 4 months of paying $300 for accommodation. Then throw in another $300 for food, transport and other things every month.

I don't know if I am giving you the answer you want. I just want to give you an overview of the expenses you would incur for you to know if to make a calculated risk or not. Please do not come to Canada and suffer. If you have a job in Nigeria, you can differ your admission and make more money to come better prepared. All the best as you make your final decision. Cheers!

i know someone who came here with a visiting visa and then got admission and his study permit.. don't know the procedures he went through
mrnilobrawn:

visiting Visa can not be converted to study permit. You will have to apply from your home country or send your application to Los Angelis (LA in USA)... I think its easier applying to home country to increase binding home tie

This type of attitude irritates me and I believe this is one of the reasons why Nigeria is not progressing. Please permit me to take this personal and go into hibernation after I finish ranting. Yes, this is a rant!

I worked in the Software Industry for quite a while in Nigeria and I met very brilliant and smart guys but the industry is going nowhere in Nigeria because our software developers lack something - COLLABORATION. I see dudes here churn our some wonderful apps and solve problems. I have met some of them and they are not half as smart as the average Nigerian but they are more productive. Why? 'Cos they put heads together and augment their strengths.

Now bringing it home, someone was asking for an SOP to use as a guideline and you arrogantly dismiss the person. I honestly believe that a lot of people here fail in their application because they do not have ideas of how to package their applications and sell themselves to the VOs. I am a strong believer in the open-source stuff and sharing of knowledge. I mean, just imagine if people here could gain access to dozens of SOPs, they can pick ideas from a couple of them and form their own style. This new style would add more to the already existing dozen SOPs. See, these Indians, Bangladeshis, heck, even Iranians do not have a proper command of english and they chop TRV more than Naija. I stumbled on one of their forums and that was where I got most of my ideas from. Imagine! Iran has had strained ties with America for decades and don't even have a Canadian embassy or consulate or whatever in their country and still they are the 4th largest population in my school. Most of them said they went to Turkey to apply for TRV. How come these countries get approval despite terrorists ties or little or no diplomatic ties with Canada? They use templates. They collaborate. They share!

Please guys, let's learn to share and collaborate more especially when it would add more to knowledge. I am not by any means saying you should share your SOP before you get your TRV (that is plain stupidity). But after you don chop the Visa, you can remove personal info from your SOP and share it. Or at least share the RESOURCES that you used to construct your own SOP if you are uncomfortable sharing your own.

</rant>
You'll live long.. Amen. the most annoying thing is that some folks who use the term "spoon feed" don't know it all. they ask questions, if not SOP, at least something else that is being answered. we all have to be civilized, if you think a question is stupid, kindly ignore and scroll down.. God bless Nigeria

SOP is statement of purpose, its not departmental.. you just have to write a summary letter of one page about you and your activities since you left secondary skl. brief explanation of when you gained admission in uni, the course you read, when you graduated, nysc start and finish yr, what motivated you to further your education and why you chose Canada. if your proposed course of study is another field from what you read, explain what gingered you to this new field, also include that after your studies in Canny, you'll be back going back to naija. mine started with eg People travel abroad because of various reasons. Some for business, to expand their horizons, learn new culture, make new friends and some go to further their education. i happen to fall into the categories of people going to further education. " After my west africa senior skl cert exam "wassce" where i made one of the best results in "YEAR" i proceeded to imo state uni in 2000 to " my course" i graduated in YEAR. started working till YEAR before i proceeded for NYSC in YEAR, and finished in YEAR, having gone through the preliminary stages of higher education, i found it worthwhile to further my education to a higher level, this move will afford me the opportunity to gain an intl knowledge, learn from great scholars and students, learn new cultures and way of life, and be more educationally grounded in order to face real-life situations. i chose this course because "give your reasons" ................................................................................ plus more finishing touches like the little things that are yet to be in Naija. then polish and praise Canada as one of the best countries in the world, you fit add say your friend is currently taking his msc in the course wey you wan do for so so uni, and he told you there's enough knowledge to gain even outside classroom. then you can end it by, i'll affect the lives of Nigerians positively when am back by introducing one or two things wey you learn from the education you acquired in Canada. i'll be grateful if am given the opportunity to take this great step in my life. Very best
