Actor Kenneth Okonkwo has defected to Labour Party.

This comes weeks after his resignation from APC following the party's decision to field a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

Okonkwo announced his defection on his Instagram page this morning August 24.

''t was an honour and a privilege to be welcomed into the Labour Party on the 23rd of August, 2022, at the Supreme God House, Apo, Abuja, by the entire executive of the FCT Labour Party, representing the National Executive of the Party. I feel loved and cherished by the visit of these distinguished officials of this peoplecentric Party to our Chambers which culminated in my officially joining the Labour Party as a member.

This will enable me assist in my own humble way to the enthronement of His Excellency, Peter Obi, as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria come 2023 for the good governance of our dear country which is so blessed by God but has been so battered by bad leaders.

I thank the Dynamics Ambassadors for Peter Obi (DAPO), which I am its National Spokesperson, for facilitating this my membership of Labour Party for the enthronement of good governance in Nigeria.

As the crisis rages on, the Director General of Wike Solidarity Movement, Prince Sudor Nwiyor, yesterday, dumped the PDP for APC.

Nwiyor, who announced his resignation from the PDP in Port Harcourt, cited high-handedness in the party as one of the reasons he left the ruling PDP.

He further stated that he defected because those who worked for the PDP were abandoned, while monies are given to new members from the APC to entice them into the party.

Nwiyor said: “My decision stems from the faulty regime in the PDP where those who have worked for the party are dumped and abandoned, while monies are given to newcomers to entice them to the party.

“The entire leaders in the 23 local government areas of the state have had no appointment, they have been asking what is in for them, I have not been able to proffer any answer.

“This informed my decision or move to the APC. I will collapse all the WSM structures to the APC.”

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Abuja branch, has told Nigerians that the ongoing strike will continue because the Federal Government is yet to call the union for discussion.

The ASUU’s branch chairman, Dr Kassim Umaru, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen at the end of its Congress, held at the University’s Mini Campus in Gwagwalada on Tuesday.

Umaru also challenged the Federal Government to reference any of the things done to bring to an end the ongoing strike.

According to him, Congress deliberated on issues around the strike and vehemently pronounced and rejected the offer presented by the Federal Government, adding that the National Executive Council (NEC) would meet at the end of the four weeks ultimatum to take its decision.

Umaru said, “As far as we’re concerned, the federal government hasn’t done anything to our various demands.

“The federal government should tell the Nigerian public what they’ve done. The two committees that were set up, the Nimi Briggs committee, the Jubrin committee, were set up and these committees had their recommendations.”

He added, “Our salaries are always negotiated. It’s not something you feel you can pay us. It’s something that you have to sit down to talk and agree that you can pay us.

“As far as we are concerned, our job is different from any other civil servants; it’s the job you are going back to do. You’re not paying for an hour. You’re paying for the job we have done, so it’s their responsibility to pay us and if they said they’re not paying us, it is a joke taken too far.

“As it’s, they have not called our union and Nigerians should know that we’ve not been called, no invitation to our union and all that we know is that the strike.

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, about 300 persons from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Gombe State have left the party for the main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the defectors in Nasarawo burnt APC flags and brooms.

In a piece of related news, the Labour Party has received several political decampees from the APC and the PDP in Igabi Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State.

Labour Party deputy governorship candidate in the state, Bashir Idris Aliyu, who hails from the local government received the decampees at Mararaban Jos, shortly before the local government party office was unveiled.

According to him, over 50,000 of his well-wishers from the local government have already followed him to the party but only receiving symbolically those present at the formal decamping event.
