The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar has said the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, won’t embark on strike if he is elected as president.

Atiku said the government’s inability to resolve the ASUU strike would never happen under his administration.

He spoke at the commemoration of the 2022 International Youth Day in Abuja on Friday.

Atiku stressed that the most important and fundamental right of any youth is the right to education.

He said: “Therefore, I take very strong exception to the strike by ASUU. The inability of the government to resolve that crisis will never happen under a PDP government or administration that I will oversee.

“I have been investing in education for the past 30 years.”

The former Vice President promised to work with the university authorities in bringing to an end the incessant strike.

“I believe the PDP provides the best platform for you to actualise your individual, collective aspirations,” he said.

ASUU has been on strike since February 14 over the federal government’s inability to honour their 2009 agreement.

The national assembly building in the federal capital territory (FCT) was on Thursday evening, August 11, gutted by fire.

It was gathered that the fire, which started on the second floor, room 227, in the new wing of the house of representatives, destroyed several documents and office equipment.

The development was disclosed in a statement released by Agada Emmanuel, director of information, national assembly.

He said the fire was suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault, adding that the fire was immediately contained and did not extend beyond the affected office.

He stated:

“There was a fire incident this evening on the 2nd floor, Room 227, in the new wing of the house of representatives, suspected to have resulted from an electrical fault which was noticed by one of the staff to the clerk, house of representatives, who promptly alerted the Federal Fire Service Unit stationed in the national assembly complex.”

“Accordingly, the fire has been put out with the assistance of staff on duty who immediately broke into the affected office and effectively deployed stationed fire extinguishers on the floor before the arrival of the fire service officer.

“Consequently, the combined prompt efforts curtailed the fire to the affected office only, and power supply to the wing put off to enable a full assessment and investigations into the incident.

“It is expected that after due assessment by the fire service and the estate and works directorates, normalcy in the new wings housing all principal officers of the house of representatives and honourable members offices will be restored immediately.”

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has dismissed claims that Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State is planning to dump the party.

PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said Wike is an important and loyal member of the party.

Ologunagba said the governor had invested so much in PDP to think of dumping the party.

Wike has been aggrieved since the PDP’s presidential primary that produced Atiku Abubakar as its flagbearer.

The governor is believed to be aggrieved that Atiku ignored him and picked Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State as his running mate.

He has been associating with chieftains of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

This led to the belief that Wike may dump PDP or work against the party in 2023.

However, Ologunagba, in a statement said: “Governor Wike is an important member of this party. He is a man who has invested so much in this party. He has also harvested so much from the party; the party has also promoted him.

“He has said in so many fora that he is a committed party man and has remained loyal to the party since inception.

“Before the presidential primaries which he contested, he told the whole world that he was ready to respect the outcome of the elections. I have no evidence that he has changed his mind.”

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan Kukah has condemned the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket.

Bishop Kukah described the ticket as reprehensible and unacceptable.

Speaking with Channels Television on Thursday, the Catholic Bishop insisted that the ticket was a setback to the country’s national integration.

Against the clamour of Nigerians, the APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu had picked Kashim Shettima as his running mate.

While Tinubu is a Muslim from the Southwest, Shettima is a Muslim from the North.

However, Kukah wondered if Muslims would accept a Christian-Christian presidential ticket.

He said Nigerians would wait to hear what they have to say when the campaign starts.

He said: “But moving forward, the question I have asked my friends who are Muslims, especially those who are from northern Nigeria, is a simple question: ‘Would Muslims in Nigeria or northern Nigeria be ready to make the same concession that Christians made in 1984 and 1993?

“I think that as a Christian, this is totally reprehensible. It is not acceptable to me, but that is the decision of the APC as a party. Perhaps, when the campaign starts, we will hear what people have to say.
