Nigeria’s former Ambassador to India, Maj.-Gen. Chris Eze (rtd.), has dumped the All Progressives Congress, APC, for Labour Party.

Eze, from Udenu Local Government Area (LGA) of Enugu State, hinged his decision on the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket of the APC.

He disclosed this in a letter dated Aug. 4, 2022, addressed to the Chairman, APC, Udunedem Ward in Udenu LGA and made available to newsmen on Friday in Enugu.

The retired Major General said that his decision to quit the party was due to the controversy that had trailed the nomination of the party’s flag-bearers in the 2023 presidential election.

Eze, who was the first elected secretary of the APC in Enugu State, said that he would join the Labour Party (LP) to support the presidential candidate of the party, Mr Peter Obi.

He also said that his resignation from the APC was to support the gubernatorial and senatorial ambitions of Messers Chijioke Edeoga and Okey Ezea, respectively, in the LP.

“I cannot in good conscience defend the party’s Muslim-Muslim ticket in the coming campaign for the presidential election.

“I also can no longer bear the dictatorial manner in which the party is administered in the State.

“I believe that Obi, Edeoga and Ezea are the best candidates for presidential, gubernatorial and Enugu North Senatorial elections, respectively,” he said.

Eze said that he was not with the standard of governance in Enugu State and needed a platform that would make life more meaningful to residents of the state.

“I wish to thank the APC and President Muhammadu Buhari for giving me the opportunity to serve as Nigeria’s High Commission to India,” Eze said.

Eze was a member, Security Sub-Committee, APC Presidential Campaign Committee in 2015.

Reacting, the APC Chairman in the State, Mr. Ugo Agballa, said that he was not dictatorial.

Agballa said that he had never taken decisions without due consultations from party stakeholders.

“The problem with some of our members is that I have refused to yield to their selfish demands. It is no longer business as usual.

“The APC needs members that have capacity, competence and electoral values and not those who cannot win their polling units.

“We are currently on a ‘thank you’ tour of the electoral wards in the State to find out those who are real members of the APC,” he said.

Agballa said that the leadership of the party in the State was committed to throwing the party open to genuine leaders “and this has resulted to the party growing in leaps and bounds”.

A 45-year-old father identified as Donovan Michael Ramirez, is believed to have killed his wife Stephanie Renee Ramirez and their three daughters in Orlando, Florida.

It was gathered that Ramirez murdered his 39-year-old wife and his daughters, Alyssa Berumen, 22, Sunny Ramirez, 11, and Shelby Rose Ramirez, 7, in a domestic abuse-related attack.

Police confirmed that they found a firearm at the grisly scene after they were called for a wellbeing check – but the cause of deaths of the tragic family has not yet been confirmed.

Ukraine has said the mandatory evacuation of the Donetsk region has begun.

The first train left Pokrovsk and arrived further west in the city of Kropyvnytskyi, according to Ukrainian officials, CNN says.

“The first train arrived in Kropyvnytskyi this morning. Women, children, the elderly, many people with limited mobility,” Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister, Iryna Vereshchuk said.

He thanked local services and international organizations and volunteers for the safe evacuation.

Pevlo Kyrylenko, who is the head of the Donetsk regional military administration, sounded the evacuation warning, adding that trains will depart every two days.

“Every paired-numbered day, an evacuation train will depart from Pokrovsk to Kropyvnytskyi with a stop in Oleksandria,” he said.

Departure time is 16:30,” Kyrylenko posted on his official Telegram. “Do not delay – evacuate! Evacuation saves lives!”

The couple is being charged under the UK Modern Slavery Act of 2015 following an investigation launched by the police specialist crime team in May 2022.

The trial of the former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who has been in detention in the UK for the past 42 days, will continue Thursday.

Mr Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice Ekweremadu, were on 23 June arrested in the UK by London Met Police and charged with conspiracy to traffic a child to the United Kingdom in order to harvest organs.

According to the prosecutors, the couple has a daughter who has a kidney-related disease and has been on dialysis for quite some time. They added that they believe the plan was to use an organ from the boy on their daughter who needs a kidney transplant.

In a turn of events, David Nwamini (alleged victim of trafficking) told doctors he was 15 and was coerced by the Ekweremadus into donating his kidney.

However, the Nigerian government said all its records show that Mr Nwamini was not a minor and was 21 years old.

The Westminster Magistrate Court in the United Kingdom later ruled that he is not a minor.

The Ekweremadus are facing charges of conspiring to traffick a person for organ harvesting in violation of the Modern Slavery Act 2015.

The case was transferred to Central Criminal Court in London popularly known as Old Bailey where Mrs Ekweremadu was granted bail on stringent conditions. But the senator was denied bail because he was said to be a flight risk.

The trial preparation hearing is scheduled to take place on Thursday and a subsequent trial next year.

Obinna Obeta, a Nigerian doctor practising in the UK, has been charged with plotting with the Ekweremadus to traffic a man into the UK to harvest a kidney for their daughter.

Mr Obeta appeared before Bexley Magistrates’ court on 13 July and is charged under the Modern Slavery Act with arranging the travel of a 21-year-old man between August 2021 and May 2022 to exploit him.

A Kano State High Court Presided has sentenced the kidnapper and killer of five-year-old Hanifa Abubakar to death by hanging.

Justice Usman Naaba also slammed a five-year jail term on the murderer for all the five charges labelled against him.

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has called for the immediate release of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu amid the security threat in Abuja.

IPOB made the call while reacting to the closure of government schools operating in Abuja due to a planned terrorist attack.

In a statement signed by its spokesman, Emma Powerful, the separatist group warned that nothing must happen to Kanu, who is in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS.

The statement reads partly: “The attention of the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has been drawn to the sudden closure of all the Government public schools operating in Abuja because of the threats from terrorists groomed by Fulani people to take over Abuja and entire Nigeria; IPOB therefore demand immediate release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from DSS dungeon in Abuja by Nigeria government and her compromised DSS.

“We are reminding Nigeria and her security agencies that the world, through the UN Right group, has mandated the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and the appropriate compensation paid to him without delay because he committed no crime against Nigeria and her sovereignty. The UN Group warned that if anything untoward happens to him it will be disastrous to Nigeria, and IPOB is ready to carry this order to the letter.

“We are advising the Fulani terrorists government of Nigeria to urgently release Mazi Nnamdi KANU unconditionally before their planned jihad in Abuja. We are monitoring them and the shenanigans they are playing with their terrorist collaborators to take over the government. IPOB is neither bothered nor interested in the plan of the terrorists to overrun the Nigerian government which we have rejected; our concern is the safety of our leader. Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, said President Muhammad Buhari was not aware of bandits’ threat to capture him.

DAILYPOST recalls that the the terrorists on Sunday July 24, 2022, after they had flogged the remaining 43 Abuja-Kaduna train victims in the forest, vowed in a trending video to capture Buhari and El-rufai.

However, Governor El-rufai, while speaking on a Radio Programme, on Wednesday night, said he had been warned to be careful.

“I also heard about a video where they threatened to abduct Buhari and myself. I have been warned to be careful, including my families too,” he said.

According to him, for the past five years, he had been advocating for the bombing of terrorists’ camps wherever they were, adding that it was the only solution to the problem.

El-rufai said, “This is why I met with the president on Sunday and told him about these problems. I also told him about the video because up to that day, he was not even aware. I told him and the following day, Zamfara State governor, Bello Matawalle also confirmed to him that he saw the video too, so as to take action.”

According to him, the President assured him that he met with the service chiefs 3-4 days before the meeting and that he gave them a clear directive to have a comprehensive military operation to deal with those people.

He added that “we hope, God willing, the soldiers and the police that were given the directives will hasten up to finish the job. We don’t have to wait until they (terrorists) strike before we respond.

“They (soldiers) must go after them wherever they are to deal with them. The truth is we are worried about the security situation, but we hope the federal government will do the right thing.”
