Politics › Naira Devalued Again, Trades At N198 To Dollar by fkaz(op): 7:06am On Feb 26, 2015 |
Barely three months, after it moved naira’s official exchange rate to N168 from N155 to the dollar, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has officially devalued it again as the Nigerian currency will now be traded at the rate of N198 to one US dollar.
This came after a cocktail of measures to arrest its consistent fall in value, which led to the closure of the Retail Dutch Auction System (RDAS) and Wholesale Dutch Auction System (WDAS) foreign exchange windows, failed to halt its slide.
In a message posted on its website yesterday, the apex bank raised the naira/US dollar official exchange rate from N168/$1 to N199/$1 even as the Senate yesterday predicated the 2015 budget on an exchange rate of N190 to the dollar.
Meanwhile, the foreign market continues to thread softly, as customers show unwillingness to buy at the prevailing high rate. The naira exchanged at N222/$1 to slightly weaken the position on Monday by 1 per cent when it traded for N219.80/$1.
In recent times, CBN has decided to bar commercial banks from holding any part of their funds in US dollars at the close of each business day as it stepped up efforts to reduce pressure on the naira.
It had to review the policy twice later, pegging the exposure at 0.1 per cent and after much persuasion, went ahead to move the limit to 0.5 per cent.
The CBN, in November last year, devalued the naira as it moved the midpoint of the official window of the foreign exchange market from N155 to N168 to one US dollar, which forced it to exchange between N168 and N174 to the dollar at the foreign exchange market.
The explanation given was that official devaluation of the naira became inevitable as a result of reduction in government revenue from oil production and sales. The development was expected to increase the volume of naira available to the Federation Account and to various levels of government to prosecute their local programmes.
But in its bid to calm the raging volatility observed in the forex market, as well as save the naira from further depreciation, the CBN increased the weekly supply of dollars to Bureau de Change (BDC) operators from $15,000 to $30,000 per operator.
The banking sector regulator said the move was also part of measures to deepen the BDCs segment. The latest policy took effect from Wednesday, January 28, 2015 auction.
J.P. Morgan analysts had placed Nigeria on a negative watch for the next three to five months following reservations over the country’s foreign exchange position and the bond market, which was described as illiquid.
Not ready to give up on its rescue mission, the CBN, which realised that domiciliary transactions are used for round tripping by banks, directed that banks submit details of domiciliary account holders, including name, account number and balances as at January 29, 2015.
The banks were also required to present total balance of all domiciliary accounts as at the same date, list of corporate domiciliary account holders and their balances, list of individual domiciliary account holders and their balances, list of public sector institutions domiciliary account holders and their balances as well as the mode of lodgement to the account transactions (either cash or by wire transfer). http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=106556 |

Politics › Borno Elders To Defence HQ: We Want To Tour Liberated Towns by fkaz(op): 9:21am On Feb 24, 2015 |
Borno elders to Defence HQ: We want to tour
Borno Elders Forum yesterday praised the Nigerian military for taking the war to the Boko Haram insurgents and recovering some captured territories. However, the Forum advised the Defence Headquarters to organise a special tour for community leaders and journalists to visit the liberated communities.
Spokesman of the Forum Dr. Bulama Mali Gubio said the Forum was impressed by the way troops were recording successes against the insurgents. He equally gave credit to troops from Chad, Cameroon and Niger, whom he said had proved to be friends in need.
“It is evidently clear that the tide has changed for the better, especially in the last two weeks. The regional forces are doing well.
“However, we wish we would be taken to these communities to see things for ourselves.
“It will also be a good credit to the Nigerian authorities if opinion leaders and journalists would be taken to Monguno and Baga as well as the communities around them that are said to be free.
“When these leaders return from the visits, they would brief their people and this will give psychological relief to the thousands of IDPs that are now living in Maiduguri who are oblivion of what the future holds for them or whether they would ever go back to their ancestral homes,” Gubio said.
He urged the committee set up by Federal Government under the leadership of retired General T.Y Danjuma to expedite action that would enable the displaced persons return to their homes.
“There is doubt about the fact the next phase of the counter insurgency approach will be serious rehabilitation of the displaced and reconstructing of ruined communities,” he said.
He added that this should be taken seriously by those vested with the responsibility. Gubio berated former minister of communication Edwin Clark over his remark recently that one day an Almajiri would become the President of Nigeria.
Clark had said President Goodluck transformed the Tsangaya schools in Nigeria, a feat he added all the northern governors could not achieve.
“The statement by Edwin Clark was in bad taste and unless he wants to rewrite history, the Almajiris have ruled this country at different times.
“To set the record straight, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, The Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello and even Alhaji Shehu Shagari have all attended the Almajiri School,” he said.

Former Anambra State governor, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife is angry with everything connected with the forthcoming elections on March 28 and April 11, and declares that it should be put on hold until the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC , Prof Attahiru Jega leaves the stage. Ezeife toldSunday Sunin Abuja that Jega, is highly compromised and incompetent.
“I don’t even want the elections to go ahead , if it must be conducted by Jega as chairman of INEC,” he declares, matter-of-factly.
He demands that Jega should either resign or be suspended, and that if the elections should lead to the “death” of Nigeria, an Interim National Government, (ING) should be set up with President Goodluck Jonathan at the helm.
Ezeife, ever blunt, says he sees Jonathan taking another oath of office on May 29, despite the prevailing situation in the country even as he insists that those behind Jonathan’s campaign are just after the financial accruals.
On the presidential candidate of the opposition All Progressives Congress,APC, General Muhammadu Buhari (Retd), the former federal permanent secretary, says the party made a mistake in picking him, because younger elements like Kano State governor, Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal would have given Jonathan a tougher race.
Ezeife, who was special adviser to Chief Olusegun Obasanjo gives reasons why he parted ways with the ex-president, describing him as ‘a bully’. He also speaks on APC propaganda, a new INEC, and the Ohanaeze crises among other burning issues.Excerpts.

Politics › Benin Kingdom At War Over Jonathan, Buhari by fkaz(op): 10:48am On Feb 18, 2015 |
The Esogban of Benin kingdom, Chief David Edebiri, has come under severe criticism over a statement that the Benins will not vote President Goodluck Jonathan in the 28 March, 2015 Presidential election, but will vote en-masse for candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd). The statement has caused divisions among the people of the Kingdom.
Edebiri, a retired journalist, politician and Chairman of Benin Forum had accused President Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of removing former Minister of State (Works), Engr. Chris Ogiemwonyi, from his ministerial appointment and replacing him with his enstranged wife from Anambra state, Princess Stella Oduah.
He lamented that the action of the President broke the home of their son, as well as depriving the Benins of ministerial slot, for which reason Benin people will not vote for him.
The declaration by the Benin High Chief has however generated rift among members of the forum who on Tuesday gave him a 12-hour ultimatum to resign as chairman of the forum.
The forum at an emergency meeting attended by Prince S. Ebuwa, Prince (Dr) Francis Omo-Osunde Iyasere, Col. Edward Igbinidu (rtd) representing retired Benin Military Officers, Lawrence Igbinosun and Lucky Osahon (Patriot) members in the Diaspora, United Kingdom, asked Chief Edebiri to resign as chairman within 12 hours.
A statement by the Media Director of the forum, Mr. Osamwonyi Osagiede for the concerned members, said that Chief Esogban’s resignation was necessary to pave way for the proper management of the forum in accordance with its Constitution.
“Chief D.U. Edebiri should be reminded that some months ago, our revered Benin monarch, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba of Benin, who appointed him and twenty three other prominent Benin sons and daughters, who are members of different political parties to oversee the affairs of the forum, sent the Crown Prince to President Jonathan to express his support for the re-election of Mr. President and his constant prayers for his victory at the polls; therefore, it is odiously mischievous and rude for anyone for that matter to assume another position.”
They accused Chief Edebiri of dragging the Benin Forum to the political arena as well as using the organization to enrich himself to the detriment of the Benin people.
Members of the Forum described Chief Edebiri’s statement that the Benins would not vote for President Jonathan as “unacceptable” because it amounted to undermining the sanctity and authority of the Benin Monarch, adding that, as far as every Benin man was concerned, the pronouncement and direction of the Benin Monarch was sacrosanct.
Also reacting to the statement credited to the Benin high chief, President of One Love Foundation, a non-government organization, Chief Patrick Eholor, warned Chief Edebiri to desist from using his traditional palace as the Esogban to speak on behalf of the people of Benin Kingdom on who to, and who not to vote for in any election conducted in the state or in the country at large.
Eholor noted that as a chieftain of the APC, Chief Edeibiri lacks the moral right to speak to the Benins when it comes to who to vote for. He noted that as an enlightened people, the Benins have the right to decide who they would vote for during the presidential election.
Chief Eholor, who is also the Enobore of Ute, said “Chief Edebiri has no moral justification to speak for the Benins on who to vote for during next month’s presidential election because he is a member of the APC.”
“This is a rat race and so he should remove politics from his traditional functions as Esogban of Benin Kingdom. He must remain neutral and should not use the Benin Forum to conclude that the palace has taken a stand on who the Benins should vote for and he should desist from such utterances or we will resist him.
“Benin has its proud culture which must be separated from politics and if we are to maintain our cultural heritage, the Palace should not be dragged into politics. That is why we are worried by what he said,” he said.
Eholor insisted that the Benins never held any meeting where they agreed that they will not support Jonathan, adding that, as a civilised people, the Benins were capable of taking any decision for themselves, just as he urged the people to come en-masse on 28 March, 2015 and vote for candidate of their choice.
But in his defence, Edo Youths Organization (EYO), an umbrella body of youths in the state, has warned that those criticizing the Esogban of Benin Kingdom, Chief Edebiri, over his declaration, face the risk of being banished from Benin Kingdom.
President of the EYO, Derick Uhunmwagho, in a press statement made available to journalists in Benin, described the criticisms as unconstructive. They challenged the critics of Chief Edebiri to dispute whether the issues raised were true or false.
“Chief Edebiri is one of our respected Royal Fathers in Benin Kingdom and that is why we pity those criticising his comments because they don’t know the consequences of being banished.
“How can they say Jonathan will get votes in Edo land when even recently, the wife of one of our brothers, Prof. Omorogbe who was Permanent Secretary/Legal Adviser to NNPC was sacked.
“After we voted for him in 2011, he has done nothing for us. The President has failed to create jobs for our youths, rather the once who went for Immigration interview were killed. There is so much corruption in this administration and he has not been able to tell Nigerians what he is doing to ameliorate the economic hardship being faced by Nigerians.
“So we stand by our Father Chief Edebiri and whoever is criticising him is doing so at his or her own risk. And it is even sad that rather than address the issues raised by Edebiri, the PDP are hiring people to castigate the Royal father, making their matter worst in Benin land,” the statement said.
