PoliticsWe Have Released Pvcs, INEC Replies Fani-kayode by fkaz(op): 7:32am On Feb 15, 2015
The Independent National Electoral Commission has challenged the Director of Media and Publicity of the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, to prove his allegation that the commission was intentionally preventing would-be voters from claiming their permanent voter cards.

Fani-Kayode had, at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, alleged that the PVCs were still in China, where they were produced, and had yet to be imported to Nigeria.

He had said, “We have information that the PVCs that Nigerians are scrambling for are not in Nigeria and will not arrive before the elections. These PVCs are still in China and (INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru) Jega has strategically delayed their arrival to suit his electioneering permutations.”

But the Chief Press Secretary to Jega, Mr. Kayode Idowu, toldSUNDAY PUNCHon Friday that the onus lies on Fani-Kayode to validate his claims.

Idowu said, “It is they that should produce proof that we have not produced the cards, because INEC has produced those cards and put them in the public domain. Anybody who says it is not like that should produce proof.

“We have extended the collection deadline and people need to make use of that opportunity to come out. INEC cannot drag people out of their houses to collect their PVCs. It is for INEC and the media to continue to sound it in the ears of people that they need to make judicious use of this time; otherwise, anyone who does not collect his card will disenfranchise himself.”

PoliticsEdo Employs Immigration Tragedy Victims by fkaz(op): 10:40am On Feb 14, 2015
Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has given automatic employment to 20 victims of the last Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) recruitment tragedy of March 15, 2014, and also gave the sum of N2 million to the widower and children of the late Mrs. Sandra Amu who died in the commotion.
This is coming almost a year after the Federal Government promised automatic employment to those injured in the exercise and three employment slots to families of those who lost their loved ones in the recruitment fiasco.

Disclosing the employment offer during a meeting with the family of the woman who lost her life and eleven of the 20 persons who sustained injuries during the ill-fated recruitment held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City on Saturday, March 15, 2014, Oshiomhole said, “It is unlawful for people seeking employment to pay money. It is the employer who pays the consultant and not the applicant. That transaction was mainly illegal collection and it is extortion.

“I think it is important that people don’t exploit office power to compound the problem of those who are already down. What we can, without prejudice to whatever plans the Immigration Services or the Ministry of Internal Affairs is making, is to see how we can assist in terms of employment.

“The government will also provide the family of the deceased with legal representation so as to sue the Immigration authorities for the loss of life. Each time people are reckless with human lives and they go home and sleep, it is why we talk about the culture of impunity, where people can do anything and go free.”

He continued: “We are also going to offer the graduates employment opportunities in our Information Communication Technology Agency if they are interested in that. In that case, you need to take their documents and they start work by Monday. However, if the Immigration option opens up, you are at liberty to move from one job to another”, he said.

Earlier, Coordinator of the group, Mr. Edmond Osuma had told the governor of their challenges since the Immigration recruitment exercise of March 14 2014 that since the incident happened it has been a serious problem getting in contact with the Controller of Immigration.

He solicited the assistance of the governor to enable the group see the immigration authorities and requested the governor’s magnanimity to alleviate the hardship of the victims.
The victims told the governor that while they paid one thousand naira each, online, before going for the recruitment, they are yet to get a refund one year after the tragedy.

PoliticsAPC Will Slash Tariffs On Imported Cars -osinbajo by fkaz(op): 4:47pm On Feb 11, 2015
Vice Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has assured that the General Muhammadu Buhari government will slash tariffs on imported vehicles.

He also said that the APC government would tackle the power problem by decentralising power generation across the country.

While addressing a town hall meeting of political stakeholders in Ondo State on Tuesday, Osinbajo said Buhari will not Islamise Nigeria contrary to the campaign smear of the Peoples Democratic Party.

He said, “We do not agree that there should be high tariffs on imported cars whether new or old ones because Nigeria is not producing cars for now.

“What we will do first is to fix power and encourage local production of cars. But before then we will reduce the high tariffs that Nigerians are paying to import vehicles into the country.”

Prof. Osinbajo argued that Nigerians should not find it difficult to purchase cars for their soci0-economic activities, and the APC government would ensure lower tariffs when voted into power.

On power, the vice presidential candidate said the problem in Nigeria was traceable to the lack of supply of gas to the power plants.

He promised that module power plants would be situated in neighborhoods where power is needed and gas supplied to it using trucks and other means besides pipelines.

According to him, the model has already been put to use in Lagos State where such plants supply power to designated neighborhoods.

Osinbajo also denied that the APC government would ban commercial motor cycles across the country, saying okada would be allowed provided riders obey laws and keep to the rules in the states where they operate.

He lamented the unemployment situation in the country, saying that as an emergency measure, the APC government would cooperate with states in creating 20,000 jobs annually in the country.

He said corruption would be stopped so that resources would be available for development projects.

He said under APC government, it would be criminal not to pay pensions, saying the law that would be put in place would compel employers to ensure pensioners got their entitlements as soon as they retire.

Osinbajo added that the job creation strategy would involve making loans available to small businesses with little or no interest.

PoliticsFg’ll Destroy Boko Haram Camps Before Elections – Dasuki by fkaz(op): 5:29am On Feb 10, 2015
The National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), has said that all known camps of the Boko Haram sect will be destroyed before the election scheduled to hold on March 28.
He also said that the Federal Government would not postponed the new date slated for the general elections again.

“All known Boko Haram camps will be taken out. They won’t be there. They will be dismantled,” Sambo Dasuki told the AFP news agency on Monday.
“Those dates will not be shifted again,” Dasuki said when asked if the polls, initially scheduled for February 14, could be pushed back further.

Dasuki said he believed the new military cooperation agreed two weeks ago between Nigeria and its neighbours – Cameroon, Chad and Niger – would prove decisive against Boko Haram.

Dasuki had urged election officials on Saturday to postpone the polls on the grounds that the military could not provide nationwide election security because all available resources were being deployed to the North-East to fight Boko Haram.
His justification for the delay was widely criticised, in part because the military was not primarily responsible for election security in Nigeria.

Troops have only been called in when police and civil defence units have needed reinforcements.
Dasuki said there was no political motive underlying his call for a delay.

“It’s not everybody who does things for selfish reasons. Some of us have a conscience,” he said.
Dasuki said the postponement could easily help the opposition All Progressives Congress, because improved security could boost turnout in the North-East, an APC stronghold.

The APC Presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had while speaking exclusively to Al Jazeera on Sunday, said the elections should not have been postponed but that his party would ask their supporters to remain calm.
“There is no need for it [the delay],” he said.

“If the same military cannot secure 14 local governments out of the 774 in six years, how can they be sure they can secure those 14 in six weeks?”

PoliticsI ‘ll Defeat Regional Force, Says Shekau In New Video by fkaz(op): 2:23pm On Feb 09, 2015
Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau vowed in a new video released on Monday that the group would defeat a regional force fighting the extremists in Nigeria’s far northeast, Niger and Cameroon.

“Your alliance will not achieve anything. Amass all your weapons and face us. We welcome you,” he said in a 28-minute speech, one of three videos posted by the Islamists on YouTube.
Troops from Nigeria have been backed by soldiers from Chad, Cameroon and Niger in recent weeks because of increased concerns about Boko Haram’s threat to regional security.

In the second of the latest videos, images of the leader of the Islamic State group, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, are shown along with archive footage and a voiceover recalling a battle between British colonial soldiers and fighters from the Sokoto Caliphate in northern Nigeria.

Shekau has namechecked al-Baghdadi before but appears to be positioning Boko Haram in a wider jihadi context by showing the Sokoto Caliphate, which was dismantled by the British in the early 20th century.
“We never rose up to fight Africa. We rose up to fight the world,” he said.

“We are going to fight the world on the principle that whoever doesn’t obey Allah and the Prophet to either obey or die or become a slave.”

On Sunday, Boko Haram militants waged twin attacks in the town of Diffa in southeast Niger, opening a new front in its offensive after repeated attacks in Cameroon’s far northern region.

The six-year uprising has become a regional crisis and on Saturday, Nigeria, Chad, Niger, Cameroon and Benin agreed to muster 8,700 troops, police and civilians to fight the group.
But Shekau dismissed the size of the force, which had previously been set at about 7,500.

“You send 7,000 troops? Why don’t you send 70 million? This is small. Only 7,000? By Allah, it is small. We can seize them one-by-one. We can seize them one-by-one,” he said in Arabic.

Shekau also directly threatened Chad’s President Idriss Deby, whose forces have attacked Boko Haram in the northeast Nigerian towns of Gamboru and Malam Fatori in recent days.
Shekau’s challenge comes after the United States said on Friday that Boko Haram could face a stronger test against more capable regional forces.

Washington estimates that Boko Haram has a core of between 4,000 and 6,000 fighters but is well-equipped after raiding Nigerian Army positions.

PoliticsUncertainty As Jega Decides Polls Date 5pm by fkaz(op): 12:52pm On Feb 07, 2015
There is anxiety in the country as Nigerians wait for the Independent National Electoral Commission to speak on whether it will go ahead with its earlier timetable or pick new dates for the elections.

The earlier dates indicated that the Presidential and National Assembly elections are to be held on February 14 while the governorship and State House of Assembly elections are to follow two weeks later.

Chairman of the commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, is to address a press conference at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja today by 5pm.

The press conference will come up after he must have met with chairmen and secretaries of all registered political parties.
He would also have met with the Resident Electoral Commissioners of all the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Some observers believe that the commission is being blackmailed to shift the scheduled dates in order to provide ample time for those who have initiated court cases against the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen.

Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), to conclude their cases seeking to stop the ex-head of state from contesting the poll.
The cases include those questioning his qualification to the contest the presidential election, and those demanding Buhari’s prosecution on the ground that he allegedly lied under oath as well as forgery.
Details later…

The Lagos State government has ordered the closure of all markets in the state today.

The closure is to enable all market men and women to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVC).
The order was passed down to the market men and women through their various market heads on Friday.

The state government had declared yesterday a work-free day for its workers for the same purpose.

It appealed to the private sector in the state to grant their workers half day on Friday to enable them to obtain their PVCs.
However, only a few companies and schools granted the request. The collection of the PVCs ends tomorrow.

This will however be subject to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) going ahead with the conduct of the general elections on February 14 and 28.

Politics2015 Polls: Ohanaeze Urges South East Govs To Make Plans To Evacuate Igbo From N by fkaz(op): 9:19am On Feb 06, 2015
The Caretaker Committee set up to run the affairs of the apex Igbo body, Ohanaeze, has urged the governors of the five states of the South East to make contingency arrangements on how to evacuate Igbo indigenes, who may be trapped in areas of violence during or after the elections.

In a statement issued after its crucial meeting in Enugu yesterday the Ralph Obioha-led committee, however refused to endorse any of the presidential candidates but rather requested Igbo to cast their votes in accordance with their conscience.

Ohanaeze also warned the Igbo to be vigilant before, during and after the elections and make appropriate arrangements to save their lives, that of their families as well as their property.

“In view of the ominous uncertainties that loom in the air, Igbo governors should make contingency arrangements, separately or collectively to evacuate the Igbo, who may be trapped in violence prone areas.

” In the statement jointly signed by the chairman of the committee, Chief Ralph Obioha, Secretary, Dr. Zed Chukwujama and Chief Mbazuluike Amaechi, chairman, Ohanaeze Elders Council, the Igbo apex body said,

“since there was no concrete agreement with any of the presidential candidates on the four cardinal issues of security of life and property of Ndigbo; on infrastructure development in Igbo land, reparation for atrocities and war crimes against Ndigbo, at least to the level recommended in the Oputa Panel Report, Ndigbo is unable to commit Igbo voters at home and everywhere to the blanket support of any of the presidential candidates.”

They observed that of the two principal presidential candidates only one sent a high level delegation to the committee “and we told them that we must see the candidate because whatever agreement to be reached will be implemented by him. We have not seen the candidate as at this date.

“The other presidential candidate has not made any contact with this committee, which is the authentic legal organ of Ohanaeze. If his belief is in some other areas or persons to gather the Igbo nation into one basket, we can only wish him goodluck.”

•Aliyu ignores Wamako, Amaechi
•Akpabio 'jolted' as Jang, Amechi shake hands

The Council Chambers of the Aso Rock Presidential Villa Abuja, the venue of the ongoing Council of State meeting was momentarily turned into a theatre hall this morning before President Goodluck Jonathan's arrival.
For Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, the Council of State meeting provided an opportunity to tease his Rivers counterpart, Rotimi Amaechi.
On sighting Amaechi at the venue of the meeting, Lamido jocularly quizzed: "Ah! Amaechi, what are you doing here?"
The Rivers State governor responded with a loud burst of laughter and said "You".

Amaechi is the Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Organisation; while Lamido is the leader of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Council for North-west.
The two governors recently held a closed door meeting; a development that has left political observers guessing.

For Niger State Governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu, it was not necessary to shake hands with
Governors Amaechi and Aliyu Wamako (Sokoto) at the Council of State meeting. Instead, Aliyu bypassed the duo to exchange pleasantries with former Chief Justices of Nigeria, Justices Alfa Belgore and Dahiru Mustapha.

The chairman of the PDP Governors' Forum and Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio
appeared jolted as he watched the two factional chairmen of the Nigerian Governors' Forum (NGF), Amaechi and Jonah Jang shaking hands.

Since 2013, Amaechi and Jang have been laying claim to the chairmanship of the Nigerian Governors' Forum.
The Council of State meeting, which commenced at 11.30am is still going on as of the time of filing this report.
