PoliticsPDP Accuses INEC, APC Of Burning Non-indigenes' Pvcs In Lagos by fkaz(op): 10:40pm On Feb 04, 2015
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is conniving with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to disenfranchise its supporters who are the non-indigenes in Lagos State.

The party said the APC has engaged in burning and destroying of Permanent Voters' Cards (PVCs) of non-indigenes in APC controlled states in connivance with INEC adding that the ploy is to stop them from voting in the forthcoming general elections.
Addressing newsmen this afternoon in Abuja, PDP national publicity secretary, Olisa Metuh said the APC wants to truncate the democratic process through violence, adding that PDP would not allow that to happen.

"In the APC controlled states especially Lagos, the non-indigenes are being denied the collection of their PVCs. In some places, the non-indigenes' PVCs are even burnt and destroyed. We have records of it and we have asked the non-indigenes involved that if by Saturday, INEC continues with what they are doing in collaboration with APC, we will decide on the next line of action. We will not allow our primary constituencies that we have to be disenfranchised in this election," the party said.

The party also dispelled claims by the Director General of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation, Governor Rotimi Amaechi that the PDP has bribed pastors with N6 billion to support it in the forthcoming elections saying it is unfounded.

"We are not happy that APC is trying to bring religion directly into politics. Pastors are respected and for you to say that pastors have been bribed is one of the greatest cardinal sins. The DG should state his facts and name the pastors involved and tell us where that huge sum of money can came from.

"Attack on men of God is capable of bringing Muslims and Christians into a major fight that can derail democracy in this country. The person who issued this statement is a Christian and I advise him to go for confession because it is a sin against God," the party said.

PoliticsLagos Evacuates 260 Beggars In 100 Days by fkaz(op): 7:26am On Feb 03, 2015
Inspite of Lagos state Government’s effort to end street begging, more beggars still troop into the state daily. This compelled the government to intensify its raid, leading to the evacuation of 260 beggars from the streets in the last 100 days.

This was contained in a document made available by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Aderemi Ibirogba at the 2,800 days celebration of the Governor Babatunde Fashola’s administration held in Agidingbi, Ikeja.
In 2013, the state faced fierce public outrage over alleged forced expulsion of some Igbo indigenes from its territory.

Last year, not minding the consequence of its action, the government rescued 2, 217 beggars from the streets in the state. And it returned 458 destitutes to other states of the federation through their relations, who were residents in the state.

Vanguardgathered that the rescue operation was carried out through the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Youths and Social Development. Most of the affected people were sent to rehabilitation centres.
The document said the office evacuated 260 beggars/destitute from the streets during the 100 days under review.”

It added that 22 destitutes rescued earlier from the streets are currently undergoing training at the rehabilitation centre, in Majidun, Ikorodu while five children rescued from the streets have been sent to schools after completing their rehabilitation exercise. After treatment, the government offered shelter to six students who were victims of sexual abuse even as those who abused them undergo prosecution.

The former Special Adviser to Governor on Youth & Social Development, Dr. Enitan Badru earlier disclosed that rescue of beggars from the streets of Lagos is “a continuous exercise.”

….Courts sentence 483 offenders to community service
Also in the document, the State Government said no fewer than 483 offenders were sentenced to various terms of community service across the 12 magisterial districts in the state in the last 100 days.
It added that N66.6 million was paid as death benefits to families of civil servants who died in active service.

The statement stated that this was part of the non-custodial sentences introduced by the state government to decongest the prisons, as enshrined Administration of Criminal Justice Law, ACJL 2011.

It explained that through the community service, which requires offenders to do some community work, the state government has succeeded in de-congesting the prison system without compromising the justice administration system.

It added that other non-custodial sentences included in the ACJL 2011 were probation and restitution which were expected to ease prison congestion and minimize the effect of imprisonment on individuals and their families.

The government noted that free legal services were provided for indigent residents of Lagos, saying “10, 084 cases were treated free for Lagosians.”

Breakdown of the statistics revealed that “Citizens Mediation Centre, CMC resolved 7, 766 cases for Lagosians at no cost to the litigants. The Office of Public Defender, OPD treated 1,426 cases and undertook 11 rescue missions during the period under review. Similarly, the Directorate for Citizen’s Right treated 892 human rights cases free.

“Also, these three agencies facilitated the recovery of N229.1 million debts and compensation for residents of Lagos in different matters. While CMC recovered N213.440 million, OPD; N11.062 million and Directorate for Citizen’s Right assisted Lagosians reclaim N4.6 million.”

Finally, Nigerian Troops Bombard Sambisa Forest

As part of measures to contain and quell the Boko Haram insurgency, the military has stormed the insurgents in Sambisa Forest, their notorious hideout, according to reports from the Hausa service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
The director of defence information, Maj-Gen Chris Olukolade, told the agency that the military had been raiding the forest and other hideouts of the sect since Tuesday night.

According to the agency, the army used it war drones to level some of the Boko Haram camps in the northeast but it was not clear about the casualties on both sides. The army said that they are still committed to securing the civilian population at whatever cost.

“We are still committed in ensuring that we degrade their ability to continue their activities and eventually eliminate them,” Olukolade said.

“The mission is on. There are no allowing terrorists anywhere. As many times as they come, it will only give us the opportunity to decimate them.”

On Saturday, Chadian forces reclaimed the northeastern Nigerian town of Gamboru-Ngala after a heated battle with Boko Haram that involved a ground and air campaign. Gamboru-Ngala, about 145 kilometres east of Maiduguri, was captured by Boko Haram last year.

A soldier involved in the operation said Chadian forces were working under the African Union agreement to help Nigeria in its fight against Boko Haram.

Information made available to LEADERSHIP yesterday indicate that troops of the Nigerian Army under directive to invade Sambisa forest in Borno State with a view to end the years of Boko Haram insurgency, have started bombarding the fringes of the forest near Adamawa state.

Sources close to the area have confirmed that aerial bombardment had commenced yesterday.
A soldier serving with the 7 Division, Nigeria Army, Maiduguri confirmed this development to Leadership even as he begged not to be quoted in this report.

According to him, “special forces have been mobilised from different part of the country, especially the 81 battalion, to Yola over the weekend and the operation starts today (Monday).
“What people may have heard or seen today may not be unconnected with the operation. They have to do the bombardment of the forest starting from the fringes before the artillery troops would begin to advance. But be rest assured that before the end of this week the forest as well as many communities under the control of Boko Haram would be reclaimed”.

The soldier said himself and most of his colleagues were happy with the resolution of the United Nations for agreeing to constitute an international joint task force to deal with the Boko Haram.

PoliticsNobody Can Intimidate Us, Oba Of Lagos Warns AIG Mbu by fkaz(op): 11:40am On Jan 31, 2015
The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu 11, has warned the new Assistant Inspector of Police(AIG) in charge of Zone 2 Police Headquarters,Lagos, Mr Joseph Mbu to desist from any attempt to intimidate the people of Lagos as he earlier did in Rivers State, when he was police commissioner.

Akiolu gave the warning yesterday, while receiving the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate,General Muhammadu Buhari’s delegation in his palace.
The traditional ruler who urged people of Lagos to cooperate with security agencies, warned Mbu, saying: “Nobody can intimidate us. Let it be clear that Lagos is not Port Harcourt.”

“Though police redeployment is normal during elections, but any policeman that comes here to cause trouble will fail. I and my people will give him a matching order.”
He said police officers should not be partisan, adding that “police should do their constitutional role without bias.
He said: “I want to sound a word of warning to security agencies. If anybody comes here to come and cause trouble he will fail. Others have tried and failed. Sometimes back, someone (a police officer) was posted here and he attacked me and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I told him (police officer) he will fail and he did fail,” the monarch said.

He however urged the people of Lagos to cooperate with the security agencies for the general well-being of the state.
“I urged my people to cooperate with the police and the army to do their job. I want all my people to be peaceful and law-abiding. All shall be well with us,” he said.

The monarch said Lagos State has suffered under the PDP-led Federal Government since the return of civil rule in 1999. He described Buhari as an upright, honest and dedicated gentleman who meant well for the country.

“Lagos won’t ever lag behind again in the forthcoming dispensation. I know the ability of Buhari. He is very passionate about this country and he will deliver,” he added.

PoliticsNEDG Denies Leaking Debate Questions To Jonathan by fkaz(op): 10:07pm On Jan 28, 2015
The Nigeria Election Debate Group on Wednesday in Abuja fixed February 1 and 8 for the Vice Presidential and Presidential debates respectively for the February presidential election.

The organisation, which debunked rumours that it had leaked debate questions to the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan, said 13 out of 14 political parties fielding candidates and recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission, had indicated interest to take part in the debate.

While the Vice Presidential candidates debate holds on February 1 in Abuja in three sessions, Jonathan and the presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and other presidential candidates will hold their debates on February 8 in Abuja also in three sessions, which will be televised live.

The Chairman, Board of trustees of NEDG and Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority, Mr. Sola Omole, stated this during a press briefing on the preparation for the debates.
According to him, the NEDG is a non-partisan organisation that is made up of media professionals and people of impeccable character from the civil society and had no interest on who wins the forthcoming presidential election.

He said, “As of now, I can say that 13 political parties have confirmed that they will attend the debate. We are still working on it and we still have a few days to go before the debate.

“I will like to state that the NEDG is not a partisan organisation but a collection of media people, civil society organisations and professional associations, which have an interest in ensuring that Nigerians have better, adequate and relevant information to enhance their ability to take a decision on voting day.

“As we speak, the questions that are going to be asked on the date of the debate are still being worked upon by our debate formal committee. Those questions are not ready; as I am speaking to you, the questions are not yet ready; there is still work in progress. Therefore, there is absolutely no reason why anybody will have the questions right now.”

Also speaking, a former Director-General of Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria and Media Consultant to the NEDG, Chief Taiwo Alimi, said over 3,000 questions had been submitted to the website and e-mail of the group from Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora while over 70 per cent of Nigerian voters have made up their mind on who to vote for after watching previous debates.

He said, “The election debate would be issue-based and issued-driven. There will be non-participatory audience that will not clap, yell or laugh during the entire debate. There will not be any score card for the candidates.

“It is on the day of the debate, when the debate is about to go on air, that we (the NEDG) will now give the moderators and the panelists the questions they will be asking the candidates.”

Politics2015: Ohanaeze Endorses Jonathan, Threatens To Sanction Amaechi by fkaz(op): 8:38am On Jan 27, 2015
As the February 2015 general elections gather momentum, the Igbo apex ruling body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, yesterday in Awka, the Anambra State Capital, endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan , the People Democratic Party ,(PDP) standardbearer for the presidential election.
Addressing newsmen, the President of Ohanaeze in Anambra State who is also the chairman of Ohanaeze Ndigbo State Presidents Forum, Chris Eluemunoh, said that the seven presidents—general of the seven states that make up the Igbo nation which include, Anambra; Chris Elumunoh, Enugu; Dr Eric Ebeh, Imo; Dr Ezechi Chukwu , Abia; Chief Emmanuel Oparanta, Ebonyi; Pius Nwankwo, Rivers; Prince Igo Okparamma and Delta; Ifeanyichukwu Onwukamike, resolved to endorse him because of the need to implement the national conference recommendations as he was the initiator of the conference that they said, would unite the country .

In a communiqué signed by the seven presidents-general, they posited that since the All Progressive Congress (APC), opted out of the conference, it meant that the initiator, President Jonathan would be voted to implement it .

According to them, “considering the realities of the forthcoming 2015 general elections, Ohanaeze Ndigbo State Presidents forum, has objectively made a critical assessment of the scenario and our findings revealed that the implementation of the just concluded National Conference resolutions is both timely and necessary for the sake of equity, fairness and common good of all Nigerians as an entity”.

The group reasoned that since the conference was the brainchild of President Jonathan , it was then logical and impressive that he would be desirous to implement the said confab resolutions rather than any other candidate..

“In view of the forgoing, the Ohanaeze state presidents forum therefore endorses President Jonathan in the forthcoming presidential election and urges all Ndigbo in the 36 states of the federation and Abuja to vote massively for him.”

On the alleged crises rocking the apex Igbo body, they stated that Chief Enwo Igariweh and Dr. Joe Nworgu remained the President- General and Secretary General of the body adding “we disassociate ourselves and condemn herewith illicit and inordinate activities of Chief Mbazulike Amaechi and his cohorts in their bid to undermine the integrity of the duly elected National Executive Council (NEC) of Ohanaeze Ndigbo”.

They hinted that Chief Mbazulike and cohorts lacked the locus standi, statutory legitimacy and moral wherewithal to decimate or truncate the constitutional four year term of the Igariweh led executive .

“Mbazulike is neither the leader nor spokesperson of Ndigbo and should refrain from parading himself as same “
According to them,” Mbazulike and his cohorts are running the risk of extensive sanctions from Ohanaeze Ndigbo if they do not desist from their well-established antithetical utterances and inimical activities geared toward denigrating the present Ohanaeze Ndigbo NEC and the corporate integrity of Ohanaeze.“

The forum condemned the alleged bombing of its secretariat by an unscrupulous elements in the night of Jan. 24 2015 and implored security operatives to fish out the perpetrators of this heinous crime to face the wrath of the law.

Moderator, I request that the OP should be sanctioned for passing false information capable of causing chaos. And if what I am about to say is found to be wrong, I should be banned for life from this forum.

What Sambo said was that God purposely created us as Muslims and Christians to live together. He then went on to mention certain countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan and co that are predominantly Muslim.

To buttress this point, he said even the presidential candidate of APC has chosen a Christian that controls over 5,000 churches as running mate. This was to show that Christians and Muslims had always worked together.

He further sighted instances where even military leaders had Christian deputies and all. The message ended with a note of caution that; those currently using religion to divide the people should not be listened to.

Nowhere did Sambo say that because the man has 5,000 churches, they should not vote for them.

This claim by the OP is blatantly false, malicious, sinister and out to cause chaos.

PoliticsReturn Jonathan Or Forget One Nigeria – Ijaw People by fkaz(op): 10:27am On Jan 24, 2015
The leadership of the Ijaw nation yesterday rose from a meeting held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, declaring that unless Jonathan was allowed a second term in office as, there will no longer be a “One Nigeria.”
Besides, the people also warned that any further attack on the President by hoodlums would be effectively retaliated.

This position was made known at a meeting facilitated by the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, Kingsley Kuku in Yenagoa which had in attendance the state’s governor, Seriake Dickson, his deputy, Rear Admiral John Jonah and top government officials.

The former Ijaw warlords at the meeting included Chief Government Ekpemupolo aka Tompolo; Alhaji Asari Dokubo; General Boyloaf and Gen. Young-Shall-Grow.
In their speeches, they made it clear that since the oil produced on their land was the unifying factor that brings the nation together, they were ready to stop the oil from continuing to flow if the President is not allowed a second tenure.

Asari particularly charged the youth to be battle ready, “if need be, as nobody can frighten or intimidate us anymore.”
“There is power in Ijaw nation. We are going to war; everyone of us should go and purify himself,” he declared.

Also speaking, Boyloaf said: “There is one Nigeria only because our oil brings us together. Today, they are intimidating one of our own. I, Gen. Boyloaf, I am ready for them. We own the resources, yet they say we do not have the right to rule. Then, we must collect our oil back. If they say they want to take the power from us, then we will take our oil back. We are ready to match them bumper for bumper.”

Boyloaf insisted: “Gone are the days when you intimidate people with guns. We are ready. The Nigerian Army cannot police the pipelines from end to end.”

Summoning up the decisions of the leadership, Kuku made it clear that the Ijaw nation would no longer tolerate the continued attack on the President in the north, especially after the Ijaw people and nation had extend a hand of friendship to their son when his campaign train came to Bayelsa.

“We will not take lightly again what has been happening to the President in the North. We will no longer accept it anymore. For this country to remain united, they should treat our own as we have treated theirs,” he warned.

Speaking later, Dickson said he would take the message of the people to appropriate quarters, adding that he has a fair understanding of all the issues involved.

Former military President General Ibrahim Babangida yesterday rose in defence of the APC presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, on the genuineness of his secondary school certificate.

Gen. Babangida warned that any attempt to politicise the military would not be in the nation’s interest.
“It is a very dangerous thing to do,” he told The Nationin an interview in Minna.

He said there was no way Buhari would have risen to the rank of a general in the army without possessing the basic educational qualification.

Babangida, who was reacting to the controversy sparked by the certificate in an exclusive interview, said the army, as an institution, subjects all its intakes to proper scrutiny, training and re-training.
He was shocked at the heat generated by the issue and advised those who feel aggrieved to go to court.

He warned that the military should not be ridiculed as it remains,in his opinion, the only institution of national unity and that it is passionate about acquisition of knowledge by its officers.

His words:”The military is one institution that believes in constant learning and training. You receive the initial training from the Staff College. After one year, you go for another round of intensive training that is all encompassing.

“It is one institution that is concerned about knowledge, even in warfare. The military requires you to keep abreast of development in warfare, weaponry and education.

“Perhaps, military is the best institution that is concerned about training and knowledge and about discipline because no officer is considered for promotion without having the prerequisite qualification and must pass the required examinations”.

He cautioned the political class to desist from politicising the military, pointing out that any such attempt will be dangerous for the institution and the nation.

“The military remains the institution of unity. I will not support the idea of politicising the military,” he said.
The former military leader was, however, full of confidence that the military will strive to keep above the scheming of the politicians “as it is capable and will resist any undue attempt to influence it.

“This is nothing but politics. I think those aggrieved should know what to do. Anybody who feels aggrieved should go to court and let the court make a pronouncement that will settle everything”.
