FORMER President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday in Abeokuta ,cautioned the literary icon, Prof. Chinua Achebe and the loyalists of late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo against uncomplimentary comments over the 3 -year old civil war in the country. Obasanjo reacted in Abeokuta during the grand civic reception organised by the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in the South West to formerly welcome him home after his resignation as the Chairman, Board of Trustee, BoT, of the party. A former Biafran warlord, Ben Gbulie who thanked Obasanjo for converting the outright dismissal of some soldiers in the Nigerian Army who participated in the Biafran war to retirement, stating that, Obasanjo, as a war leader at that time won all the battles. Former BoT Chairman of PDP, Obasanjo It would also be recalled that, Achebe and Awolowo’s loyalists recently traded words over the roles of the latter and the eventual criticism by Achebe in his recent book. Reacting to the controversies generated over the issue, Obasanjo urged both sides to sheathe their sword and let sleeping dogs lie. Obasanjo disclosed that he deliberately invited the former Biafran warlord to share his experience about the civil war, saying, “because you are one of the participants in the first coup, and as you rightly said, you are also on the other side fighting for what you believed in, to save the Igbo from extermination. “ Like I always said, that whole episode is unnecessary but we should also remember one thing, action and reaction in physics, they say, equal and opposite , but, in human interaction, no. Reactions are always greater than action and you know that and I know that. But I believe the time has come when all of us in this country should put the civil war behind us. “ Whether you called it Biafra, whether you called yourselves rebels or we called you rebels at the time, you called us vandals or we called ourselves whatever, I believe enough is enough on the Nigerian civil war. I am happy that you came because I want people on the other side to know it was unnecessary. Since January 1970,after 43 years, if we are still mourning and groaning, I wonder. The second world war ended 1945 and the combatants were the best of friends less than 10 years after. I just believe that we should put that behind us.” Earlier in his lecture “Obasanjo in the Eye of History,” delivered by former President of Ghana, John Kuffor, he relived how Obasanjo used $40million to stabilize his country (Ghana) when he released the fund to the West African neighbour to pay its equity fund in the West African pipeline fund. Kuffor said he was particularly bonded with Obasanjo, whom he fondly referred to as “my friend and brother,” stating that the consultation and approval to part-finance the project for Ghana, was taken in Washington DC. “Myself and Obasanjo were Presidents during the same time. When I became President of Ghana, between 2001 and 2009, Obasanjo was President in Nigeria between 1999 and 2007, the economy of my country was flat on its belly. At that time, Obasanjo approved that Nigeria should give us fuel on favourable terms aftermath of my meeting him in Abuja.” At the civic reception graced by the political class, captains of industry, members of the diplomatic corps, the royalty, where the Olubara of Ibara, Oba Jacob Omolade obliged the gathering that “poverty bond him together with Obasanjo in their Secondary School days at Baptist Boys High School in Oke-Egunya, Abeokuta, Kuffo recalled how the Owu-born General secured debts cancellation for Nigeria and got its external reserves to hit $53bn. He recalled how Obasanjo “bullied” Guinea Bissau soldiers when the duo visited as President of Africa Union and ECOWAS respectively by saying to them on a peace mission: “you guys should go back to the Barracks, how many of you are in this country that you have more Generals than Nigeria,” at the reception put together by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chaired by former Head of State, Ernest Shonekan and graced by Bola Ajibola, a former Judge at the World Court in the Hague. Others who graced the ocassion included Senate President David Mark, Adamawa governor, Murtala Nyaku, PDP national vice chairman South West, Engineer Segun Oni, Former Governor of Ondo state, Segun Agagu, Osile of Oke Ona Egba, Oba Adedapo Tejuosho, former Agricuture Minister, Alhaji Adamu Bello, former education Minister, Dr Oby Ekwesili, Olubara of Ibara, Oba Jacob Omolade, Osimawe of Ondo, Iyalode Alaba Lawson, Deji of Akure, Oba Adebiyi Adesida, Former Speaker of Ogun state, Titi Oseni, Olu of Ilaro, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, Former Presidential adviser of Legislative matters, Florence Ita-Giwa, former Military administrator of Western Nigeria, Vice Admiral Akin Aduwo, former Ogun PDP governorship candidat, Adetunji Olurin and the representatives of the governors of Kaduna, Niger, Plateau and Jigawa http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/01/obasanjo-cautions-achebe-awolowos-loyalists-against-civil-war-comments/ |

Governor went to Dubai to spend his holiday. An ex-convict and former Bayelsa State Governor, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, was among the handpicked privileged who accompanied the Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, on an official two-weeks trip to Dubai, the governor has said. Mr. Alamieyeseigha, who was jailed for misappropriating billions of Naira of Bayelsa State funds and forfeited several of his property to the Federal Government, enjoyed an all-expense paid trip on behalf of Bayelsa State to secure foreign investors. The criminal was not the only one that enjoyed the largesse, another top Peoples Democratic Party politician, Wakil Mohammed, who is not even from the state, but rather from the North Western part of the country, was also on the trip. As a result of the trip led by Mr. Dickson, the Bayelsa State Government said it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with a Dubai-based firm, GEAP International, to build a steel plant and cold storage facilities in the state. This is contained in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, on Friday in Yenagoa. “Gov. Dickson, who took two weeks break to have a deserved rest in Dubai, broke his vacation to achieve another milestone for Bayelsa State,” Mr. Iworiso-Markson said. “This is after he inspected one of the largest steel plants and cold storage facilities in the world, owned by GEAP International in Dubai.” Mr. Iworiso-Markson said the governor signed the MoU with Mahendra Patel, the group managing director of the firm. He said: “under the terms of the MoU, GEAP is to partner the Bayelsa State Government to replicate the steel plant and cold storage facility in Bayelsa State. “The firm is also to embark on capacity building of Bayelsans in steel, cold room business and new techniques in rice farming.” The statement disclosed that the firm would send its team of engineers and experts to Bayelsa to undertake an on the spot assessment of markets and carry out soil tests across the state. It said further that Mr. Dickson was accompanied on the visit by Mr. Alamieyeseigha; and former NDDC Managing Director, Timi Alaibe. The PDP Vice Chairman, North West, Wakil Mohammed, was also among those who accompanied the governor. Mr. Dickson is expected to resume duty on January 21. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/115919-ex-convict-alamieyeseigha-joins-bayelsa-governor-others-on-official-dubai-trip.html |

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday declared that any leader not ready to step on toes does is not worth being the leader of any nation, as such will have nothing to offer. brosiye99: As the big bro of west africa there is no way Naija can run away from this Mali debacle. In all it is to our interest that Mali is stabilised else Niger republic wld be threatened by those islamist militants and ultimately Nigeria wld be affected. The problem in Mali now is a fallout of the death of Ghaddafi and the collapse of Libya whereby arms freely flowed across the borders to neighbouring Mali. As seen so far, france has testified that the militants are using very sophisticated weaponry. Going forward I think the intervention in Mali is a right step but France and her interests would continue to suffer attacks in north africa. The truth is that, nigeria need to be verycarefull when it comes to religion(faith) war.this is not political war in liberal ivory-coast or senegal. Places like iraq, afghanistan where American went to mediate, The crises is still there. Instead we should tighten our board against those millitans That is why i like the way ghanian president back off. There are issues you don't just jump into. |
According to chief of air staff “We expect them to do what Mr. President directed that we do; he has directed that we should go and assist Mali in repelling the jihad fighters there because you know that if they finish with Mali the next thing will be to come to Nigeria. |

The World Bank has praised economic policies of the present administration declaring that it has led to slight reduction in the country’s poverty index from 48 to 46 percent. Speaking when he visited President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday, World Bank’s vice president for Africa, Mr Mouktar Diop, said Nigeria’s economic indicators remained positive even times of recession. He said “at the time when the economy is going down, we have seen that Nigeria has been keeping a growth rate which is rather significant. So, I was here to hear from the President’s priority and discuss other issues such as how poverty has been evolving in the country and what we can do to accelerate the reduction of poverty. “Our work recently has shown that there is slight reduction in the level of poverty in Nigeria moving from 48 to 46 percent. The trend is good. It needs to be accelerated obviously. What we discussed are the policies that we can put in place to accelerate the pace of poverty reduction in Nigeria.” Diop said the World Bank has decided to intervene in Nigeria’s energy crisis saying, “We decided at the World Bank to put up a task force which will include private sector branch to support the reform. It is good that the reform is really making progress. I was with the main players of the power sector today, and they were all happy with the reform process so far.” On his part, Jonathan said though some of the reforms were not easy to push through, his administration would continue to do its best towards ensuring sustainable growth in the country. “We will continue to do our best. We would have had more robust growth by now but for the global economic recession. With your continued support, we will certainly achieve more,” the president said. Jonathan said that with the continued support of the World Bank, other international institutions and investors the Federal Government will achieve an even higher growth rate for the national economy. http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/index.php/news-news/48572-world-bank-poverty-has-reduced-in-nigeria |
LAGOS— CENTRAL Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, yesterday, turned his attention to ethno-religious groups in the country and urged the Federal Government to ban them as a way of curbing insecurity in thecountry. Sanusi made the suggestion at an inter-faith dinner organizedby the Northern Reawakening Forum (NRF) in Abuja, yesterday. He also asserted that all ethnic and religious groups in the country were actually political associations donning false cloak. CENTRAL Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Sanusi LamidoSanusi He said: “I almost didn’t want to attend this occasion because I am opposed to regional, ethnic and religious groupings in this country. In fact, I would like the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Jamatul Nasril Islam (JNI) , Afenifere and all such other groups to be banned.” The call elicited immediate condemnation from leaders of theaffected groups, who described Sanusi’s comments as irresponsible. This came as former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Audu Ogbeh and one-time Permanent Secretary, Ahmed Joda offered suggestions on how to tackle poverty and insecurity in the North. Elite fan embers of insecurity with religion Sanusi, who attributed the state of insecurity in the country toa fall-out of the exclusiveness and marginalization which many Nigerians belonging to the younger generation had been subjected to, traced the current insecurity in northern parts of the country to power struggle among the elite who use religion to pursue their goals. He lamented that despite the fact that the Northern region’s land mass constitutes about 60 per cent of the Nigerian landmass and agriculture contributes 42 per cent to the Nigerian economy, the region remained impoverished. He blamed the northern insurgency on the selfishness of the nation’s elite which had failed to see the future. Economic failure, cause of insecurity in the North – Ogbeh In his remarks, Ogbeh recalled that past northern leaders laidthe foundation for a peaceful region by accommodating people of all religious beliefs. He said: “A former Sultan of Sokoto named Saddiq had a Christian Igbo cook and the late Ahmadu Bello had a Christiandoctor.” Going down memory lane, he revealed that Shehu Malami, a notable Northern Muslim offered him accommodation in Abuja after he escaped assassination in 1998. He further posited that the on-going insurgency in the Northern region was a fall-out of economic failure in the region, adding he had predicted that the situation would degenerate to the present level over a decade ago. Sound education remains solution to northern poverty – Joda Also speaking at the event, Ahmed Joda queried why disease and poverty were ravaging the northern region while industries and economic development was expanding in other parts of the country. He lamented that all the old industries in the region which were located in Kaduna, Kano and Jos had collapsed. He proposed that for this trend to be reversed, the region neededto give its children sound education. In his remarks at the occasion, the Chairman of the group Hon. Mohammed Kumalia said NRF had organized programmes in Plateau State to promote peaceful coexistence among people of different faiths. Sanusi’s call a huge joke – Afenifere Leader of the Afenifere, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, described Sanusi’s call as a huge joke, countering that banning the ethno-religious groups would not in anyway help combat the wind of insecurity in the country. Fasoranti, who roared into a laughter when asked his views onthe apex bank boss’ comment, said: That is a big joke. We (Afenifere) are not given to violence. We want unity and progress. He is shooting the wrong target. We want progress and improved welfare for our people. They know where the problem of insecurity is coming from. They should tackle Boko Haram. They should talk to their leaders to put their people in check. I n Afenifere, we generate ideas for the society to become vibrant. We don’t preach violence.” Sanusi is living in the past – Ohanaeze Outgoing Ohanaeze Ndigbo National Secretary, Chief Nduka Eya, wondered why ethno-religious organisations should be banned, saying Sanusi should not be dignified with a responsebecause his comments were frivolous. His words: “What is wrong with Nigeria is that everybody has asolution to Nigeria’s problems. Too many cooks spoil the broth. Sanusi does not deserve our response because his comment is frivolous. How can they ban CAN, Ohanaeze, Afenifere, etc? Nobody is going to respond to the nonsense heis talking about.” Sanusi’s comments capable of breaching security – CAN On its part, CAN, which said it could not be banned, said Sanusi’s barrage of controversial comments portended more danger to security than any non-religious group in the country. Secretary-General of CAN, Rev Musa Asake, said: “CAN is not the cause of trouble or insecurity in this country. CAN was formed to protect the interests of Christians, especially in fighting persecution. CAN is not a government institution like NEMA, which any person can wake up and disband. The 1999 Constitution guarantees freedom of association and Sanusi cannot just wake up and call on anybody to proscribe it. Sanusi has been making several controversial statements andas a CBN governor, he should not make controversial pronouncements like this one. It is this type of statement that causes problems, not CAN as an institution. It is unfortunate that at a time like this, when Christians are being killed and churches burnt he is making this type of insensitive comment.CAN and JNI have come to stay. We have no quarrels and nobody can curtail CAN’s freedom of association as guaranteed by the constitution.” . Ethno-religious groups re-enfore national unity – ACF National Publicity Secretary, Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, Anthony Sani, picked holes in Sanusi’s call saying banning ethno-religious groups would do more harm than good to the country. He said: “The existence of different regional and religious fora are not as divisive as posited by Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi; precisely because they have overlapping interests whose countervailing forces reinforce the unity of the country. So, their place in the order of things is to advance the cause of national solidarity through relative pluralism andnot to promote insular particularism that cannot fit into their place in the order of things. This is because it is easier to bring the people together through such groups and help themunleash their synergy by living up their collective challenges for public good, rather than to allow ‘toyour tent O Israel’ to prevail which is capable of inspiring ethnic nationalism that is not helpful.” Sanusi is pursuing a hidden agenda – OPC Founder of the South West militia group, Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, Dr Frederick Fasehun urged Nigerians to pray that somebody like Sanusi should not emerge as the president of the country. “When democracy is failing, autocracy comes in and we all know that the Governor of the CBN is an autocrat. So, let us allgo on our knees and pray to God that he does not come as the leader of this nation,” he said. Also, OPC National Coordinator, Otunba Gani Adams said the CBN Governor had a hidden agenda for making such calls. “He is becoming too controversial nowadays because I don’t know what concerns Sanusi with religious bodies and pressure groups. As the CBN governor, his role is to discuss the economy and the financial state of the country. To say CAN, JNI and other pressure groups should be banned shows he has a hidden agenda. Any reasonable person should be careful in delving into religious affairs because it can cause crisis that can consume any country,” he averred. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/01/ban-can-jni-acf-afenifere-others-sanusi/ |

Thank God for NNIP projects under president OBASANJO, For building those plant. |
The Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu, has quietly commenced preparations to run for president in 2015, confirming speculations that he is among the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governors getting set to contest against President Goodluck Jonathan for the party’s ticket, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt. PDP Governors are currently in a running battle with Mr. Jonathan over control of the party. While the governors want the National Chairman of the Party, Bamanga Tukur, to leave office, Mr. Tukur has the backing of the president to hold on to his position. The crisis has already led to the replacement of the National Secretary of the Party, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, after a court annulled his election. His deputy has now been appointed to replace him even as an appeal against the judgment is pending in court. Mr. Oyinlola, the immediate past Governor of Osun State, is seen as the arrowhead of the anti-Bamanga faction within the leadership of the party, and has gone to the Appeal Court to challenge his removal. As reported by PREMIUM TIMES, the ongoing crisis, though playing out now, is really a battle for 2015 and Mr. Aliyu, who describes himself as the ‘chief servant’, seems ready to start early preparations. The strategy The first strategy being adopted by the Niger Governor is to send the State Working Committee, SWC, of the PDP on a tour of other state chapters of the party “on a thank you tour over the election of Umaru Chiza as National Youth Leader of the PDP.” Mr. Chiza was elected almost a year ago in March 2012 at the same time as other PDP leaders like Messrs Tukur and Oyinlola and party members are reading deeper meaning into his “thank-you” visit at this time. The delegation, which commenced the tour from the North Central states, was at the PDP secretariat in Jos, the Plateau State capital, on Monday, and was led by the Niger State Chairman of the Party, Mahmud Abdulrahman. Mr. Abdulrahman in his short remarks said the aim of their visit was to create a lasting relationship among states within the North Central zone with a view to getting their support to “contesting key positions come 2015 general elections”. However, in a chat with newsmen after the event, Mr. Abdulrahman denied that Mr. Aliyu is nursing the ambition to run for president. Our campaign has started But a member of the delegation confided in PREMIUM TIMES that the real mission of the group was to solicit cooperation of state chapters in favour of the governor’s presidential ambition, adding also that should that fail, the state plans to present former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, as a presidential aspirant. “Our goal is to make sure that the next president comes from Niger State,” he said. Also speaking, PDP National Youth Leader, Umaru Chiza, debunked insinuations of any disharmony in the party over the crisis within the NWC and the election of a chairman for the party’s of Board of Trustees, BOT. “The so-called crisis in the PDP is just being over blown out of proportion. Yes, we have little issues here and there but I can assure you that we have the capacity to overcome these minor challenges and come out stronger, “ he said. In his own remark, the Chairman of Plateau State chapter of the party, Haruna Dabin, assured the delegation of Plateau’s support, and acknowledged that the two states share a lot in common. He therefore, called on other states in the zone to team up and present a credible candidate who will be acceptable by all. The delegation is also billed to visit Lafia, the Nassarawa State capital; and Makurdi, Benue State; for the same purpose. The tour, a source said, will terminate in Abuja on Wednesday, after the delegation’s visit to Kogi and Kwara. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/115196-2015-niger-governor-babangida-aliyu-kick-starts-presidential-campaign.html
