Asaba Few days after the Christmas and New Year festivities, theprice of `garri’, a staple food, has shut up in Asaba, the Delta capital and environs. A survey by NAN, weekend, showed that the price of a paint bucketful of the commodity had risen to N400 from the N300. Similarly, a cup of the commodity now sells at N50 as against N30at last week. Mrs Preye Obuseh, a garri dealer at Ogbeogonogo Market in Asaba, attributed the price increase to the scarcity of cassava occasioned by the recent flood disaster in parts of the state. According to her, most farms were destroyed and that has made the supply of garri far below its demand. However, other food items maintained the Yuletide period prices in the area. For instance, the price of a 50-kg bag of “Mama Gold” brand of rice remained at N10,700 while Stallion and Mama Africa brands still sold at N9,700 and N9,300, respectively. Similarly, the price of other brands, including Union, People’s Choice, African King, Tomato King, Red Eagle and Crystal, maintained their Christmas season prices. Also the prices of all types and sizes of palm oil and vegetable oil also remained stable at the Yuletide season’s prices. Miss Chinyere Adishi, a rice dealer and some dealers in oil in the market, said that the prices of rice and oil had remained stable, because market activities had yet to pick up. “You know that we are still selling what we bought for the Christmas and New Year and that is why the prices have not changed. “Besides, people have spent much money stocking some of the items and it will take a while before they will return to the market to raise demand for the commodities,” Adishi explained. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/01/garri-price-shoots-up-survey/ |
Felix Owolabi, a member of Nigeria’s 1980 Nations Cup winning team, has called on Super Eagles Coach Stephen Keshi to recall striker Osaze Odewingie for the South Africa 2013 soccer fiesta. Owolabi made this call in Ibadan on Sunday. According to him, it was not too late for the Super Eagles handler to recall the West Brom goal poacher, if Nigeria must make a mark at the event. “Much as the issue of player’s selection is the exclusive right of the coach, I think Keshi should bend backward to include Osaze in his team for the South Africa Nations Cup. At the same time it will be counterproductive to keep a quality, exposed and seasoned player who could make a turn around,’’ he said. Osaze and Coach Stephen Keshi It would be recalled that Keshi had dropped the trio of Osaze Odewingie, Obafemi Martins and Taye Taiwo from the NationsCup squad. Meanwhile, the exclusion of the ace striker had continued to generate controversy. The erstwhile Shooting Stars left winger, who urged Keshi to give every player equal opportunity, called on the coach to play a fatherly role by reconciling with Osaze. “I am not saying with Osaze, Eagles will win the cup, neither am I saying without him Nigeria will not win, but that the two of them should dialogue in the interest of the nation.’’ he said. The Physical Education graduate lambasted Osaze for over flogging the issue on the pages of papers. On the Super Eagles chances of winning the Nations Cup, Owolabi said that although Nigeria started building a team toolate into the competition, the Nigerian factor was there to keep the squad going. He, therefore, implored the Eagles not to underrate any team, stating that Ethiopia, Burkina Faso and Zambia qualified on their own merit. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/01/recall-osaze-now-owo-blow-tells-keshi/ |
A former Director General of the now rested Centre for Democratic Studies (CDS), Prof. Omo Omoruyi has said that it was not too early for President Goodluck Jonathan to start campaigning for re-election. He noted that it was evident that the President has done well so far, hence it was not illegal for him to have started campaign . His words: “Why will he not contest? Look, constitutionally, is he not qualified to contest? If yes, then, his performance will be judged by the people and not him. When people said, ah, there are posters here and there, it is even too late. Why is it too early? Haven’t you seen what is going on in the United States of America today? The man (Barack Obama) will be sworn in on January 20, 2013 and the Republicans are already looking for an alternative to him; within the Democratic Party they are looking for somebodywho would replace him. “So, it is not too early because election starts once election is conducted. Period! You do not wait. I have said it that in first year, you are busy trying to plant something; second year it must germinate, third year is a nomination year and this is nomination year. So, what is so early in it? “The man (Jonathan) should own up and say, look, I am seeking a second term or whatever term it is. So any group that is rooting for him is in order. He has never owned up to that. Based on what Ihave said, I do not know what he has done because in some of these things, you must stand to be counted. He must say, I have achieved this thing, I have stabilised this country, I have given Nigeria a leadership, and you must make a choice. “We are gradually going to the nomination year now and if he cannot put an end to those seeking to replace him within the PDP in the third year, he should forget it. If he cannot make those seeking to replace him from outside the PDP in the third year, he should forget it.” Speaking on the attempt by the Northern Governors and federal lawmakers to quash the PIB following allegation that its provisions were against the zone, Omoruyi said: “Who owns oil now has become an issue. It is for all of us. It is for everybody. That is only the beginning of the crisis we have in this country, otherwise, I canassure you of one thing… If oil was found in the North many years ago, the North would have seceded long ago. “That is why this craze for exploration. There is still that fear that the country would break up. You see, one document I put togetherfor General Ibrahim Babangida contained two final points. One, hewanted former President Yar’Adua to pursue the dredging of the River Niger up to Baro and Baro is Babangida’s locality. It is his home. “The second is that he also wanted the building of a highway from Kano to Tripoli in Libya. He said he wanted quick exploration of oil.Why were that going on and why were these three issues so important? It is because they did not believe that Nigeria will last. If Nigeria breaks up, they will not have to go through the ports of Lagos or Port-Harcourt,’’ he added it would be recalled that President Jonathan had since denied his involvement in the campaign posters, which took over the streets of Abuja last week http://dailypost.com.ng/2013/01/07/2015-its-early-jonathan-begin-campaign-omoruyi/ |

Former Abia State Governor, Dr. Uzor Kalu, has said the Igbo will provide qualitative leadership for Nigeria and Nigerians if given the opportunity to lead the country in 2015. Kalu, the Protem Coordinator of Njiko Igbo in a statement on Sunday, said he had no doubt that the economic fortune of the country would be turned around if a president of South-East extraction led Nigeria. The former governor, according to the statement, spoke at a dinner with the Nigerian community in Belgium on Friday. Kalu decried the unfair treatment of the South-East by the Federal Government when compared to other regions in the country. Kalu described Njiko Igbo as a non partisan and apolitical movement conceptualised to correct the anomalies Ndigbo had suffered over the years. He said Ndigbo, having excelled in various fields of endeavour, with qualified people who could bring their vast experiences in the private and public sectors into play if given the chance to rulethe nation, should be given the opportunity to rule the country. He said, “Igbos are the salt of the nation. Anywhere you don’t see Ndigbo, the economy is incomplete.” Kalu said the group, in partnership with other stakeholders, was preparing a policy paper anchored on three focal areas – internalsecurity, infrastructure and agriculture – for the nation. He said this would serve as a manifesto for any Igbo presidential candidate in 2015. He noted that the people of the South-East were not just clamoring for the zoning of the presidency to their region but were ready to change Nigeria for better. He added, “We absolutely believe in pragmatic strategies for rebuilding the nation.” Kalu lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission for deregistering some political parties. In his remarks, Mr. Nuhu Tadeh, a classmate of Kalu at the University of Maiduguri, Borno State, lauded the effort of Njiko Igbo in championing a genuine cause and providing a common platform for Ndigbo to seek for a chance to rule the nation. A medical practitioner in Brussels, Dr. Ebe Ozua, appealed to Nigerians to live in peace and harmony. Ozua commended Njiko Igbo for its noble efforts in mending fences in the South East in order to reposition Ndigbo and reaffirmed the support and commitment of Nigerians in Diaspora to any cause that would make Nigeria a great country. http://www.punchng.com/news/ndigboll-provide-qualitative-leadership-in-2015-kalu/ |

Denied institutions their autonomy, is one of the greatest problem in nigeria |
We need more of this in this country(asin skill acquisition centre) to reduce unemployment |
Rivers State Governor and Chairman of Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NSF), Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi said, at the weekend, that Nigerian governors would continue to oppose calls for local government autonomy. He pointed out that Local governments, in their estimation, should not be designated as federating units. Governor Amaechi declared his stand for the umpteenth time when he fielded questions from newsmen. He said that governments all over the world maintain two tiers ofgovernance and, therefore, insisted that the Governors forum, as a pressure group, would continue to push its opposition to local government autonomy through the ongoing constitution amendment exercise. “Of course, yes, we will continue to oppose autonomy of local governments. Let a state governor or let the states create as many local governments as they want to create. “Don’t put it there as a constitutional issue. Okay, you say for instance, you are accusing some governors of mismanaging resources, how? I have given example in Rivers state where not only do they collect their money directly, they collect ‘my’ N2 billion monthly. “Ask them, I pay the salaries of all their teachers and that is N2billion per month. If you take away that one, my wage bill will come down to N6 billion per month.” The governor further said; “The governors are a pressure group,if we succeed in putting the pressure on both National and State Assemblies and say look there are two tiers of governance, governors are one of the most patriotic elements in this country. I say to you. “Look there is no country in the world that there are three federating units, there are only two all over the world. Whyshould you say that there must be a third federating unit in Nigeria.” Governor Amaechi also denied insinuations that governors were frustrating the ongoing constitution amendment exercise and said that on the contrary, the governors were cooperating with the National Assembly on the amendment exercise. He said: “How will I know that? Just tell me one role the governors are playing in the process. Are we the legislative arm of government? That question does not require an answer because what he (Senator Adeyemi) is saying is that there is no state Assemblies and National Assembly, the governors have constituted themselves into state Assemblies and the National Assembly too.” http://www.leadership.ng/nga/articles/44321/2013/01/07/govsll_continue_oppose_lg_autonomy_amaechi.html |

Spend 30 year with king sunny-Ade and still remain broke. |
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Saturday that it apprehended a veteran guitarist who played for one of the most popular afro juju musicians in the country with cocaine. The agency said that the suspect who played guitar for music star, King Sunny Ade, for three decades was caught on January 1 at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos while attempting to board an Air France flight to Italy. Operatives of NDLEA detected two parcels of cocaine industrially hidden in the false bottom of the suspect’s luggage. While confirming the arrest, NDLEA Commander the Lagos Airport, Mr. Hamza Umar, gave the name of the suspectas Fatoke Abiodun. “We have made the first arrest in the new year. The suspect, aguitarist by name Fatoke Abiodun was found with 1.575kg of cocaine. The drug was discovered in the false bottom of his luggage during the outward screening of passengers to Italy,” Hamza said. The agency also said that the 62-year-old grandfather who is married to four wives with many children is already helping narcotic investigators handling the case. “Fatoke has owned up to the alleged crime blaming his involvement on financial hardship,” said a statement from NDLEA signed by its spokesman, Mitchell Ofoyeku, and made available to THISDAY. “After my primary education, I only did one year in the secondary school before I went into music. I can play any kindof guitar but my music career is a sad story. I played for King Sunny Ade for 30 years before I was unceremoniously retired in 2007. I was unprepared and without severance money, I saw the bitter side of life. “This is my first time of involving myself in drug trafficking. I did it out of frustration because at my age, I could not provide for my family. I am ashamed of myself,” Fatoke was quoted tohave told the agency. Speaking on how he got involved in drug trafficking, Fatoke explained that he got a call from a friend. “I live in Ibadan with my family. I was invited to Lagos where I was given N50,000 and they promised that every arrangement will be ready for me to travel soon. They promised to pay me N1 million . If not for my condition, I would have turned down the offer but it was my last hope to free myself from financial difficulty. “I was given the bag and my ticket but at the airport NDLEA detected the drug. Since then, I have been in deep pain. I feel bad because I have no one to help me,” Fatoke regretted. NDLEA Chairman, Ahmadu Giade, described the involvement of Fatoke in drug trafficking as sad and disappointing. This is a bad legacy to his children. This is a good start for the agency in the year and a sign that the days ahead will be tough for drug traffickers. The agency will continue to handle every case in accordance with the NDLEA Act”, Giade stated. NDLEA assured that the suspect would be charged to court forunlawful exportation and possession of narcotics, adding that if convicted, he could http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/sunny-ade-s-ex-band-member-arrested-with-cocaine/135500/

Para military should have top this list due to job rocketing, during recruitment. |
Pls consider fp, once a victim of job scammer https://www.nairaland.com/1152246/nigerian-bribe-takers |
http://premiumtimesng.com/news/113884-the-nigerian-bribe-takers.html The Nigerian police topped the list of reported cases of bribery. Charles Ahmed needed a job; and so in February last year, he was asked to part with N250,000 to secure employment at the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. He said that he was able to talk the staff of the para military outfit into collecting N150,000; but by December, he was still unemployed. For Mohammed, another job seeker, the N20,000 he paid to secure employment in a construction company last April had not yielded any result. “I have not been employed by the organization. I feel cheated. I do not even want the job again. I just want my money back,” Mr. Mohammed wrote on egunjedotinfo, an anti corruption website. In November last year, the website, dedicated to crowd-sourcing trends in bribery and corruption in Nigeria, was launched by the Integrity Organization Nigeria, an anti corruption, research and advocacy organization. “The primary goal of the project is to track, name, and shame corrupt individuals and organisations in Nigeria,” said Soji Apampa, the founder. World’s corruption capital After the website’s launch, complaints of staff of public and private organisations soliciting for bribes began to appear on the site. The complaints ranged from an immigration official demanding N1,000 before he would stamp an international passport to a police officer claiming that they were mandated to make “returns “ of at least N40,000 to their commanding officer mostly on Fridays. Within five weeks of its launch, the website has recorded N1.2 million as having been paid as bribes to both government and private officials, with the police leading as the top bribe-soliciting department. Nigeria has continued to remain rooted to the bottom of the global corruption rankings since the return of democracy in 1999. In December last year, Nigeria was rated the 35th most corrupt country in the world by Transparency International, scoring a dismal 27 out of a maximum 100 marks. One month earlier, a Gallup poll had rated the country’s leadership as the second most corrupt in the world, with 94 per cent of Nigerians believing that there is widespread corruption in government. But corrupt practices are not limited to government officials. Writing on the website, a student travelling to Malaysia for a Masters Degree programme narrated his experience in the hands of an airline official. The student, who did not state his name, said that he was forced by the airline staff to tender an “irrelevant” document or part with $300; else he would not be allowed to board. “I thought of calling police but police also collected N5,000 before allowing me in, I thought of calling Custom but they also collected N1,000 too after checking my luggage. “I had to call him (the airline staff) and pleaded with him to collect N5,000 which he refused. After serious begging, he collected N10,000 and they later clear my document and allowed me in,” the student said. Lukewarm response There have been 30 responses since the website was launched. Of the 22 posted in December, only two gave kudos to the government agencies involved for not asking for bribes. One of them stated that he offered four police officers N4,000 after they drove him home in their patrol van from the Abuja airport at about 2 a.m. The officers turned him down saying that “it was too much.” Mr. Apampa admitted that the response had not been encouraging as anticipated. “However, we realised only a bit later that people are a bit shy to put stuff on the internet themselves,” Mr. Apampa said. “We got a better response after we started to advertise numbers that you can call. We found that we got better responses from the phone lines than people going themselves to the site,” he added. The website was established to name an official who had requested for a bribe, describe the events leading to the request, and how much was demanded or paid. It also targeted officials and agencies who carried out their duties diligently without seeking for gratification. A breakdown of the information on the website showed that out of the N1.2 million paid as bribe, the police collected N528, 050; followed by Internal Affairs ministry with N358, 000. The departments of Education, Foreign Affairs, and Construction received N295, 500, N41, 000, and N20, 000 respectively. However, a surprising trend crept in. Page 1 of 2 | Next page

In two weeks, between December 19, 2012 and January 3, 280 persons died as a result of road crashes. The Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, recorded 280 deaths from 480 road accidents between December 19, 2012 and January 3, the Corps Marshal, Osita Chidoka, said. Mr. Chidoka told newsmen at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Friday, shortly after an aerial patrol of road traffic that 1,600 people sustained various degrees of injuries from the accidents that occurred across Nigeria. “Compared to last year, there is slight improvement and we hope this improving trend will continue because in the past 10 years, FRSC has successfully brought down crashes within December period year on year. “Traffic is moving clearly and our efforts in managing the traffic has been very successful in this year `Operation Zero’ coupled with the fact that the roads have vastly improved,” he said. Mr. Chidoka said that during the period, 13,000 vehicles were booked for various traffic offences out of 36,000 stopped by operatives of the FRSC, while the rest were cautioned and discharged. He said out of the 399 traffic offenders charged to mobile courts, one was sentenced to jail, 370 fined and the rest discharged and acquitted. Mr. Chidoka attributed the success of the commission in managing road traffic during the period to past experiences, increase in personnel and improved technology. “The learning of the past, we have been learning from our experiences and also we have improved data collection and analysis. “Second was the increase in our staff strength which happened in the last one year and a half. “We have more people to deploy on the roads and thirdly is our improved monitoring mechanism – our effort to improve oversight of people who were given work and making sure that it is done,” he said. Mr. Chidoka said that through the use of technology, the commission’s operatives are monitored to ensure compliance with assignments given to officers in terms of traffic control and rescue operations. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/113820-nigeria-records-280-deaths-from-480-crashes-in-two-weeks-frsc.html

http://premiumtimesng.com/news/113796-how-intercontinental-bank-staff-stole-falanas-money-others-efcc.html The former Nigerian banker stole from Falana and Falana chamber’s account. Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has stated that the N306 million stolen from the Falana and Falana Chambers’ account was returned by the bank to avoid a legal action. A statement released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday announced that it had arrested two suspects involved in a N1.5 billion bank fraud. Olayinka Sanni, a former manager at Intercontinental Bank (now owned by Access Bank), and Oyebode Atoyebi, Personal Assistant to Adeyemi Ikuforiji, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, were arrested by the commission for conspiracy, stealing, and forgery. “I confirm that the sum of N306 million was stolen from our clients’ account by the officer,” said Mr. Falana. “But I wish to say that the management of the bank refunded the money to avoid a legal action from our chambers,” he added. Mr. Sanni, who also operates a Bureau de Change, SIDAW Ventures, allegedly transferred various sums of money into his SIDAW account without the bank’s customer’s consent, the EFCC said. In addition to the N306 million transferred from the account of Falana and Falana Chambers, the suspect also allegedly transferred N65 million from the account of Babington Junior Seminary; N40 million from P.W. Nigeria Limited’s account; N15 million from Mikano International’s account; N20 million from Viju Industries Limited’s account, and N1.2 billion from Murhi International Limited into his company’s account. “Besides, Sanni also collected the sum of $461,200 USD from one Chukwurah Nkiru, who sold it to him for the equivalent of N76, 559,200 but was not paid. “Sanni is also embroiled in a foreign exchange scam where his SIDAW Ventures account was used to handle the sum of N104, 405, 000 where only N72,229,000 worth of foreign exchange was paid to the customer leaving a balance of N32, 185, 000 being hotly contested between his firm and the customer,” read the statement signed by Wilson Uwujaren, the commission’s Spokesperson. Mr. Atoyebi, who is also enmeshed in a N501 million money laundering charge alongside Mr. Ikuforiji, was arrested for conspiracy and complicity, having allowed Mr. Sanni to use his name and passport-sized photograph to open an account in SIDAW Ventures Limited in the name of Akanmu Babatunde. “With this fictitious name, Sanni brokered many shady deals and duped many innocent people,” the commission stated. The EFCC said that the duo will be arraigned in court “soon.” |
