Bro, don't let the fact that these teams concede against 'big' teams fool you that there defense is not good. Apart from A. Madrid, Barca has consistently had the second or third best defense in the league.

Man for man, A. Madrid backline is not better than Barca's, but due to DS's system, they're all look like Goliaths.

Since Pep took over City he has not dropped out top 3 defense in the league, Liverpool only beat them by one goal last season.

In the last four years or more, no team in Germany has a better defense than Bayern, as in, no team comes close.

Imagine what would have happened if they had a better defense that year?

If you're rating their entire defence performance on goals conceded and trophies, it's okay,but I don't want to believe it was the defenders in those top teams doing incredible defensive duties,in fact its largely as a result of massive qualities they've got in attack, ability to posses and wingers pinning opponents back, if you see lots of this big teams, weaker teams don't attack them.

See barca, teams hardly get to their box, pique overlaps anyhow, semedo and Alba mount pressure on opponents, I don't see them sweating like Simeones' men.. Those are defenders..

Arsenal's attempt to attack teams like barca,Liverpool,Bayern city is the reason why we lose with a cricket score, Chelsea, utd will rather keep it tight with more men behind the back and rely on counters to score..
The moment thies teams face an equally or better attackers, they also concede in large, The following fixtures comes to mind:

but city,barca and PSG, its majorly ability to guard and posses the ball well which prevents opposition from even getting the ball..

Schezney, Kosc and mert benefited from this in 2014 or 15, we had the golden glove that year, this isn't because they were genius, we had players in carzola,Sanchez, rosckiy, coq et Al who are good at keeping the ball..

Ferguson played traditional defenders, Rodgers team bottled it on match 37th at crystal palace, surely, defensive weakness will show but its a sign you can go far, I mean if Auba,laca and pepe can be ruthless and score as much as many chances, 3-0 at half time would have settled the defenders Nerves, should they attempt to attack us in numberd for equalizer, we kill them more on the counter..

I'm for us getting defenders but for lack of funds to to that, I believe with quality forwards who can break teams down,our defenders can fair well this year,and we bring in A class CB next summer like Liverpool did.

I know many would disagree with me, but i think defenders are overrated most especially Center backs. When you have players that than can take on opponents and a stable/tough tackling midfielders. Trust me it would be hard for opponents to get to our defence. If we can pull off Coutinho and Tierney without a CB i won't get mad. Unless we need a cover for Kolscieny if he finally joins Bordeaux.

Unpopular opinion I also share, look at barca,city,PSG and Bayern, I don't rate their defence as an A or B, just a C IMO.
What those teams have is a very deadly forward with defenders ability to hold and shield the Ball well... See pique, he isn't good on one on one, but when he gets the ball, he can't be dispossessed unless you foul him..
City defenders are ballplayers, Barca's are attackers except umtiti.

For me, the problem with most players is not absence of skill or ability but mentality and poor psychology. Mustafi falls into this category.

Defenders like DeLigt, McGuire, VVD are of the mould of Ferdinand and Vidic, Adams, etc. They are not there for their skills but the mentality and the attitude they bring to the team. That is why managers make them captains.

I Couldn't have said it better. Someone was even saying signing Coutinho would limit Ozil game time or Auba if played on LW. And so fuckinng what? We want consistent results, not flopping against top 6 teams only to dance when celebrating a goal versus 18th placed team in the League..

You've said mustafi is good defender and evidenced by his stats. Then you further posited he makes mistakes that at times leads to goals. This is also true. But last season was like worst season I've even watch arsenal play. Arsenal's poor form last season was not solely caused by mustafi. Ozil, Xhaka, Mustafi and even Mkhi were flops last season. Kolasinac had bad days too, so did Guendouzi, Mitland-Niles and even Torreira.

How u say actual play is different when talking about mustafi is what I don't understand. I watched him play last season and he had some good games and had some bad games. Arsenal's woes were only compounded by the fact that while mustafi makes his occasional mistakes the aging Koscienly is usually not close by to save the day.


Like someone said earlier mustafi is passionate which is evident in how he does some sweeping tackles and tries to win the ball, but we have an average midfield covering the defence which does not give room for any mistake from the defence hence why our keepers drink goal like Coca-Cola

This is my thought about it to, I believe our defence is fair and decent enough,not very good but not as bad as it seems..
We've got:
Ozil&Xhaka.. who are slow,immobile and bad at tacklings
Ramsey...Doesn't defend much and likes to be in opposition box
Guendozi...Not physical enough and gets bulied.
Torreria..He tries but gets tired and bullied alot.
Kolasinac, ...doesn't like to defend and average at it..
Niles...Good going forward,tries a lot but inexperience and makeshift affected his game..

So it was easy for oppositions to permeate through our paper feathered midfield, so CBs are bound to suffer..
We need midfield engine of Ndombele,Sissoko and Wanyama..they are good going forward ,very hard to break and protect defense very well.

Sometimes I feel this whole tactics thing is overstated. Sometimes you don't need to more tactical than everyone else. If you've got more quality in your squad, you can usually edge it.

A strong argument for this is the 3 peat Madrid did in the UCL. You couldn't really say Zidane outwitted all his opponents tactically. Sometimes, he was fortunate to have freak events align to favor his team (Karius), sometimes he went dirty (Ramos on Salah, Ramos getting Cuadrado red carded), but there was a common constant through all these... Madrid was always the side with more quality.

Even if you're not too tactically strong, you can usually get by with some quality in your squad. For all his tactical ability, Sarri never won any thing until he got a bit of quality (and met Arsenal ).

That Madrid team has everything, they can score long range shot,they can dribble thier way in,freekicks, can score headers,can get dirty,can get lucky, fans,referee everything was there for Zidane..

Even pep had to spend over and over before he got to this stage, he met an arguably one of the best squad in England that year at city, baba went trophy less and struggle for top4, when he got in the players he wanted, everything became easy for him.

The pepe we're gloating about is just like a benched Mahrez to Gaurdiola.

That Liverpool side beat city 4-3,3-0 and 3-1, beat Arsenal 4-0 and drew us 3-3 and host of other big results that year..

If we can look similar to that Liverpool side, we'll have an amazing season, we'll make top4 and win Europa hands down, then with money generated, we can bring in 2/3 more players like they did with v.dijk,Allison and Fabinho..

I don't like Xhaka, but he has to start the CM ahead of Dani, Xhaka has been used as CB,LB and DM, so I see him a better defender than ceballos, ceba can shoot,drive the ball and do a final pass or cross, he shouldn't be wasted in deep midfield.

As for our forwards, Auba and laca will be very effective in the cf position flanked by Pepe..

It will look like mahrez/ Vardy that year, where pepe bags lots of assists while Auba scores tons of goals..

With Laca. ...Peep
It will be similar to Sallah/ firminho, here, Pepe scores a lot, benefits from laca dropping deep and mobility, with laca also scoring sizeable no of goals..

Over the next 2summer, I reckon we bring in LW, like Soarez or any emerging star.
