–  says it’s economic trip
Ironically with nothing going on in the only industrial layout of the state, the Imo state Governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha and a good number of government officials and House of Assembly members as well as some local government Caretaker Committee Chairmen, who left the state on Friday, June 20, 2014 for Turkey on business and capacity building trip, have returned. The trip was claimed to be at no cost to the state government.
Some major investors in Turkey, who own some of the big companies in that country, with appreciable interest to invest heavily in Imo State were said to have invited the officials of the state government to that country to enable them tour some of the companies involved to see things for themselves.  We were made to believe that the investors had undertaken to shoulder the costs.
Those who had made the trip according to government sources, represent one economic interest or another.  The local government chairmen on the trip will concentrate on small-scale industries, commissioners and board members will concentrate on companies and factories that could help the state achieve its industrial goal.
All these actions, according to government sources are aimed at arming the state government in its desire to industrialize the state for the good of Imo people in particular and Nigeria in general
Meanwhile, some Imolites have described the Turkey trip of the governor as another way of wasting the scarce resources of government. They however wondered what 171 people will be discussing with the government of Turkey just for few days, which the governor and a few of his commissioners and aides cannot do.
Imo people have been wondering when the numerous economic tours abroad by various governors would begin to yield dividends. From the administration of Governor Achike Udenwa, through that of  Ikedi Ohakim to the present one, no year passed without one economic tour or another, usually with a large number of aides and praise singers.
Governor Okorocha had visited United States of America, United Kindgom, Kosovo and now Turkey. “Where are the dividends of these economic tours,” many Imo people ask.
“It is too bad that Owelle Okorocha would decide to disappoint some of us by proving us wrong.  We vowed that the governor cannot behave like his predecessors in office by travelling overseas for jamboree but he has proved us wrong. This is too bad”, said a concerned Imolite.
Observers say it is time for us to borrow a leaf from developed countries if actually we want to grow.  Even the president of the Untied Sates of America has never travelled with such number of people on his business trips to Europe and Asia. They say any talks or trips on industrialization should have begun with something tangible happening in terms of building up the necessary infrastructure in the Onitsha road industrial layout of the State or even at some other government sites.

honestly, the pedestal that hospital pharmacists have been placed on is disheartening coupled with the treatment metted out on them in various hospitals. This makes hospital practice a no go area for some. Although its quite a wonderful job, we also shouldn't shy away from the fact that the aim of our profession is to render service to humanity irrespective of the work environment.I believe this because pharmacists still work in warzones. So let's all be encouraged to aim at working as hospital pharmacists and maybe one day, the lot of hospital pharmacists would improve.

if, the state govt 'indirectly' imposed extra 5% value added tax on banks--which seem to be wrong... Why are the banks refusing/ delaying to go to court, hence they ve an edge over the state govt for extra charging them which is 'NOT' required by law. I perceive banks are susceptible because of crooked deals in regards to this tax, that's why they relent in going to court...
giving the attendant issues with courts in Nigeria, and seeing that their head branches in the state have been shut by rochas(meaning it will be difficult for other branches to function),maybe they decided that the lockdown is the quickest and best means to seTtle their grieviances against the government.let's see what happens

COME, GO SMOKE MAGGI IF YOU GOT NOTHING TO WRITE ASIDE TO CASTIGATE ROCHAS'S NAME BASELESSLY..ARE YOU AWARE COURT GAVE STATE GOVT THE RIGHT TO SHUT DOWN OPERATIONS OF THE BANKS...IF BANKS GOT NO SKELETONS IN THEIR CLOSET THEY SHOULD CONFIDENTLY AND QUICKLY COUNTER THE DECISION OF THE STATE GOVT LEGALLY BY GOING TO COURT..

all those bank charges dem they charge customers for deposit's nkor?. Wetin dem dey use all the money do?...IF students wants to pay school fees '-bank charge involved-', waec/jamb/neco/gce payments '-bank charge involved-', nepa/dstv/drivers license/atm/ '-bank charge involved-' ...etc ANY GOD DAMN THING dem must charge us 'bank charge' ..now is their turn to be charged---'tax'..and dem must pay am.. #yeye people

The state governments move is an indirect way of increasing VAT from the statutory 5% to 10%. You of all people should know that the cost of this tax will be tranfered to the customers ie the citizenry. The bankers association said that the have paid all outstanding taxes required by law to the state government.this is a form of extra tax. Their concern is about the customers and not hypertaxin people.honestly, I believe imo state government is broke because similar impasse haPpened earlier between the state government and petroleum marketers ie filling stations shut down because of 1million extra tax by the state government.this lockdown may continue until rochas looks for an alternative cashcow

This government in imo state is criminal. I spoke to a banker who said that the state government wants to put in a BIR tax on customers accounts.the bankers association said that the would never tax customers outside what is specified by the ambit of the law. This money is a little above N2billion.The ministry of internal revenue is a criminal entity of the government. I think that rochas has run out of money. Save imo state

MONDAY Dec. 9, 2013, 2013 -- Contact lenses that deliver glaucoma medication over long periods are getting closer to reality, say researchers working with laboratory animals.

In their study, the lenses delivered the glaucoma drug latanoprost (brand name Xalatan) continuously to animals for a month. It's hoped that some day such lenses will replace eye drops now used to treat the eye disease, the researchers said.

"In general, eye drops are an inefficient method of drug delivery that has notoriously poor patient adherence," study lead author Dr. Joseph Ciolino, a cornea specialist at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, said in an infirmary news release. "This contact lens design can potentially be used as a treatment for glaucoma and as a platform for other [eye] drug delivery applications."

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide.

The lenses, which appeared safe in cell culture and animal studies, are the first to be shown to release drugs for this long in animals, according to the researchers. The study appears online and in the January print issue of the journal Biomaterials.

The lens the research team developed "is capable of delivering large amounts of drug at substantially constant rates over weeks to months," Daniel Kohane, director of the Laboratory for Biomaterials and Drug Delivery at Boston Children's Hospital, said in the news release.

Ciolino said a noninvasive method of sustained eye-drug delivery could save millions of people from blindness if it helps them comply with their medication regimen.

Seun: There was a time when living as a black American was very inconvenient because most places of business would refuse to serve black people. Can you imagine going to a restaurant with your white friends only to be told that they "don't serve your type here?" Or a petrol station? Or to not be allowed to attend a good school even though your academics are strong? That's what America was like before the laws that convicted this man were created. It does a lot of damage to members of minority groups if people are allowed to refuse to do business with "their type".

This reasoning is flawed because discrimination against blacks was never at any time based on religion. Here, the man refused on religious grounds

Alleged N458m bribe: Jude Agbaso is innocent – EFCC
Posted by Assumpta Press on Saturday, December 7, 2013 · Leave a Comment

The controversial impeachment of the former Deputy Governor of Imo State, Sir Jude Ikechukwu Agbaso early this year for allegedly receiving N458 million bribe from the Managing Director of JPROS International Nig Ltd, Mr. Joseph Dina may have been conjured up.
Nine months after the controversial impeachment, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after a thorough investigation has declared that Sir Agbaso is innocent of the allegation after all.
Agbaso was hurriedly impeached by the Imo State House of Assembly in February this year following the decision of a seven-man probe panel inaugurated by the State Chief Judge, Justice Benjamin Njemanze.
He was accused of demanding and receiving a bribe of N458 million from JPROS which was awarded a contract by the Imo State Government for the construction of Warehouse/Orlu Road Junction, Odunze Street, Aba Road and Old Nekede Road all within Owerri metropolis.
The Deputy Governor who also doubled as Commissioner for Works denied the allegation and made a formal request to the EFCC in March, requesting the commission to investigate the road contracts awarded at the sum of N1.5 billion  to JPROS and the purported bribe  Joseph Dina gave him as the then Deputy Governor and Commissioner of Works. After nine months of investigation, EFCC  has finally cleared Sir Agbaso.
In a letter dated November 27, 2013 and addressed to Sir Jude Agbaso, the Commission said there was no evidence to suggest that you (Sir Agbaso) benefited from the contract.
The letter signed by Olaolu Adegbite, MFR, Director of Operations, said Joseph Dina admitted to the anti-graft agency that he never gave any money to Sir Agbaso.
EFCC said that following its findings, it may take legal actions to bring those involved in the allegation and road contracts to justice.
The letter titled: “Re-Formal Request For Investigation Of Mr. Joseph Dina of JPROS International Nigeria Ltd, a Construction Company located at No. 11 Umezuruike Street, Opposite Umezuruike Hospital, Owerri, Imo State” reads:
“We refer to your letter dated 21st March 2013 on the above subject and hereby provide our findings so far into the case.
“Road contracts for the sum of one and a half billion Naira awarded to JPROS International Nig. Ltd was alleged to have engendered fraudulent bribe payments of N458 million by the Managing Director of JPROS, one Joseph Dina to you as the then Deputy Governor and Commissioner  for Works.
“In furtherance of the investigation, evidence adduced from interview of key officials of Imo State Government and other important witnesses, as well as documents obtained from relevant financial institutions, confirmed that the sum of N1,305,000,000.00 was paid to JPROS to execute the Warehouse-Orlu Road Junction, Odunze Street, Aba Road and Old Nekede Road projects within Owerri metropolis before mobilization to the sites.

“The total sum of $5,538,830.00 USD was found to have been remitted to the personal accounts of Dina in Dubai and Lebanon.  There is no single evidence so far that suggested that you benefited from the funds.
“In his statement to the Commission on 28th March 2013, Dina revealed that he never gave any money to you or any other official of the State Government over the contract, which are yet to be fully executed as at the last visit of our officers in April 2013.
“The Commission’s legal department is working on the case file with a view to taking appropriate legal action, please.”
Reacting to the EFCC findings, Chief Martin Agbaso, elder brother to Sir Jude Agbaso said he received the news with mixed feelings. First, he was happy that his brother has been cleared of the alleged bribe-taking.
However, he was sad that “a man can sit down in his office with his bunch of crooks and set-up such a kangaroo process just to destroy a man who has not done anything.”
He said from day one, he knew that his brother was innocent of the allegation and had said at that time that he would do everything within his power to get to the crux of the matter, knowing that his brother, like any Agbaso, cannot steal.
The APGA strongman expressed regret that the Imo State Governor, allowed a Lebanese journeyman to run away with a whopping N1.3billion belonging to the people of Imo State.

FROM GEORGE ONYEJIUWA, Owerri

Imo State Governor, Owelle  Rochas Okorocha, has described the purported clearance of his impeached Deputy, Sir Jude Agbaso, by the Economic and Financial crimes  Commission (EFCC) over alleged N458 million bribe as mischievous and self-serving. He accused the EFCC of doing nothing over the state government’s request to investigate  the missing N67 billion allegedly misappropriated by the administration of former governor Ikedi Ohakim.

The EFCC had written a letter to Agbaso in response to his request for investigation into the alleged N458 million bribery scam, on which he was impeached as deputy governor, clearing him of the allegation.

The anti-graft agency had stated that no document or written statement linked Agbaso to any bribe.

Speaking at a media briefing in Owerri, Governor Okorocha noted that the EFCC does not have the powers to clear anybody, saying it was the responsibility of the court to do so.

“I have not heard that the EFCC now has the power to clear anybody of gross misconduct, as the only institution vested with such authority to clear Jude Agbaso of misconduct is the court of law and not the EFCC,” he stated.

Okorocha stated that the EFCC had hurriedly whisked away JBros boss, a day to his appearance before the investigative panel, adding that ever since he had not been brought back to the state to answer to the charges of fraud filed against him at the High Court by the state government.

“We did not award any contract to Jude Agbaso but to JBros and we want the EFCC to bring him back from wherever they are hiding him,” he said.

Okorocha accused the EFCC of compromising in its duties by its refusal to investigate  N67 billion allegedly misappropriated by the administration of former governor Ohakim

“We reported to the EFCC about the missing N67 billion, which was misappropriated by the administration of Ikedi Ohakim, but as I speak to you, neither the EFCC nor the ICPC has done anything about the matter. It seems that those who have connections with the Presidency cannot be probed by the EFCC or the ICPC and that is why they have kept mute. Unfortunately, the same anti-graft agencies that has refused to probe the looting of the state treasury by the government of Ohakim has been harassing the officials of my government on continuous basis; so we decided to take our case to the court of public opinion, as our only option, since we do not have control over them.”

The Imo State governor accused the EFCC and the ICPC of being a tool of political witch-hunt against perceived opponent of the Presidency, adding that the state had been left with no other option but to establish its own anti-graft agency to enable it tackle the cases of official corruption in the state.

“Since it is obvious that the EFCC  is now a tool of political witch-hunt against perceived opposition to the presidency, we have already concluded plans to establish our own anti-graft agency, which will be known as the Imo Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to help us tackle the problem of official fraud in the state.”

Meanwhile, efforts to get the reactions of the members of the state House of Assembly on Agbaso’s clearance by the EFCC were unsuccessful, as most of the members declined to comment on the matter.
