On Friday, the presidential election petitions tribunal cautioned Akin Olujimi, President Bola Tinubu’s lawyer, against persistent unsubstantial objections.

Mr Olujimi opposed presenting an INEC-issued appointment letter to a presiding officer who participated in the February 25 presidential election without immediately stating his reasons for the objection, telling the court it would be included in his team’s final address.

The presiding justice of the tribunal, Haruna Tsammani, cautioned Mr Olujimi against repeated objections without disclosing the basis which has become a major feature of the respondents’ appearance.

According to the lead judge, the move could complicate the determination of issues by the tribunal as it will be unclear whether the objection was against the evidence or the admissibility of the evidence.

The Catholic community in Kaduna State has called on President Bola Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani to call the immediate past governor of the state, Nasir El-Rufai to order before he sets the entire country into a religious crisis.

This is against the backdrop of a controversial statement on Muslim dominance in the governance of Kaduna State credited to the former governor.

According to a trending video, El-rufai had in a meeting with some Muslim clerics, said in Hausa language that most Christians in the state did not vote for his party, the All Progressives Congress, hence the reason he orchestrated their exclusion from being even Deputy Governor.

The former governor also claimed that the APC can win elections in the state and the nation in general without the Christians.

However, in an open letter copied to the Presidency and the Governor of Kaduna State, the Nigerian Catholic Diocesan Priests Association (NCDPA), Kaduna State chapter asked Governor Sani to make his official position on El-rufai’s inciting utterances known because he (Sani) was at the event where El-rufai made the controversial statement.

The letter was jointly signed by chairmen of Kaduna Archdiocese, Rev. Fr Joseph Gandu, Kafanchan Diocese, Very Rev. Fr Douglas Rock and Zaria Diocese, Very Rev. Fr Samuel Ameh.

The Priests said they expected Uba Sani to use his good office to correct the fallacies that the former governor’s actions and comments have created and propagated in Kaduna State in the past eight years.

The open letter was copied to the Presidency, the three Catholic Bishops of Kaduna, Kafanchan and Zaria; Archbishop Matthew Man’oso Ndagoso, Bishop Julius Yakubu Kundi and Very Rev. Fr Michael Kagarko, respectively.

It's rightly in court. Let's allow the courts and teibunals carry out and perform their due diligence and follow due process.
I doubt it will lead to the annulment of the election. However, if fraud is discovered, the culprits should be penalised and an improvement should be invested in to curtail such recurrence.

If USA could produce one of the most glaringly fraudulent electoral process that ousted Donald Trump after nearly 250 years of democracy, then we should know that we are improving and will eventually get as perfect as possible eventually. Two subpoenaed witnesses of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP in the February 25 Presidential election on Thursday in Abuja admitted at the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) failed to transmit the results of the election after the collation.

The witnesses, Friday Egwuma and Grace Timothy both ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said the BVAS machine allocated to them developed system error immediately the results of the Senate and House of Representatives aspects of the poll were freely transmitted.

In their subpoena evidence, the two workers of the electoral body explained that they had to resort to other means of getting the results when it became clear that the BVAS machines would not help them.

Egwuma was a Presiding Officer in a polling unit in Abia State while Grace Timothy served INEC in Plateau State.

Apart from the failure of the BVAS machines to transmit the presidential election results, the two witnesses admitted that voting went smoothly in their respective places of work.

They were led in evidence by Atiku’s lead counsel Chief Chris Uche SAN.

Under cross-examination by Mr Abubakar Mahmud SAN, who stood for the electoral body, Egwuma explained that he resorted to an offline system in place of the BVAS machines.

In her own testimony, Grace Timothy told the Court that the greatest challenge she experienced during the election was the uploading of the presidential election results into the I-Rev portal.

The witnesses were also cross-examined by Chief Wole Olanipekun SAN who stood for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Prince Lateef Fagbemi SAN who represented the All Progressives Congress APC.

Meanwhile, further hearing in the petition has been shifted to June 9 by the Presiding Justice of the Court, Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani.

Salihu Lukman, vice-chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the north-west, says the Labour Party (LP) is popular because Nigerians are frustrated with the country’s political parties – including the ruling party.

In a statement on Tuesday, Lukman said citizens are looking for vibrant party structures that would address the divergent interests.

The vice-chairman said organs of the APC have not been allowed to function, adding that women, youth and persons living with disability wings – not yet formed – would represent the interests of these groups thought to be marginalised.

“In addition to these organs (NAC, NEC and national caucus), the amended APC constitution created three new structures, namely women’s wing, youth wing and persons living with disability wing,” he said.

“Outside the initiatives of the presiding officers of these three structures — national women’s leader, national youth leader and national leader of persons living with disabilities, since April 2022 following the assumption of office of the Sen. Abdullahi Adamu-led NWC, nothing has been done to organise the women’s, youth and persons living with disability wings.

“The popularity of the Labour Party during the 2023 elections is partly a reflection of the frustration of Nigerians with our political parties, including the APC.

“Nigerians are looking for parties with vibrant structures whose internal debates and contests would aggregate the diverse interests of Nigerians.”

Lukman said as long as the APC is operated as a “closed structure”, President Bola Tinubu would lack the needed political legitimacy to win the support of Nigerians especially when it comes to implementing difficult policy choices.

“No doubt, difficult decisions must be taken to effectively resolve our challenges as a nation. However, in taking those difficult decisions, it will be much easier to implement when the government is able to win the support of Nigerians through engagements with organised groups,” he said.

Renowned lawyer and human rights activist, Mike Ozekhome, has expressed his concerns over the haste with which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared former Lagos State Governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the winner of the 2023 Presidential elections.

Speaking in an interview with journalists in Abuja, Ozekhome stated that the announcement was made too hastily, without proper consideration of the various legal and constitutional issues surrounding Tinubu’s candidacy.

According to Ozekhome, several issues needed to be addressed before Tinubu could be declared the winner of the Presidential elections. These include allegations of corruption and financial impropriety against Tinubu, as well as concerns over his health and fitness to hold the highest office in the land.

In addition, there were also questions over whether Tinubu had met all the requirements for candidacy, such as possessing a valid birth certificate and fulfilling other eligibility criteria.

Ozekhome further stated that INEC’s haste in declaring Tinubu as President could have serious implications for the country’s democracy and rule of law. He warned that if these issues were not properly addressed, it could lead to a breakdown of law and order and undermine the credibility of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

The interview has caused a stir in political circles, with many calling for INEC to respond to Ozekhome’s concerns. Some have also questioned Tinubu’s suitability for the Presidency, given the various allegations and concerns raised by Ozekhome and others.

A socio-political group, the Concerned Citizen of Nigeria (CCN), has described the last round of election across the country as a coup d’état against the Nigerian people.

Members of the group, who are affiliated to the opposition, Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State, point-edly accused the electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of subverting the will of Nigerians, particularly the youths who had hoped that the poll would be transparent and fair.

According to the group in a press conference on Friday, the swearing in of President Bola Tinubu is an affront to the 1999 Constitution as he failed to meet the statutory requirements to be invested with power.

Speaking on behalf of the group, one of the facilitators, Mr. Seyi Akinde, stated that though his group is unhappy with the outcome of the poll, it would however help mobilize the youths and other vulnerable segments of the Nigerian society to put in place a government that would work for the people.

Akinde, who spoke alongside other members of the Lagos State chapter of the Labour Party such as Stephen Emordi Omoba, Chinedu Alex, Foluso Leigh and Tokunbo Ajibola, however maintained that the journey towards the enthronement of good governance in the country would be long drawn and tough.
