Guess this explains why its now getting to pandemic levels |
As incidents of rape become widespread in Nigeria, psychiatrists and psychologists proffer reasons for sexual violence, especially against women. LARA ADEJORO reports Sometime in June, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, disclosed that 717 cases of rape were officially recorded in Nigeria within five months spanning January to May. Based on that, it means that at least four females were raped on a daily basis in Nigeria within that period. However, on Monday, July 13, the Minister of Women Affairs & Social Development, Pauline Tallen, during a visit to the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, said over 3,600 rape cases were recorded across Nigeria during the lockdown spanning April to June. In recent times, incidents of rape involving females of all ages, some as young as three months old; and a handful of male babies, have been reported across the country, with many citizens advocating stiff punishment for anyone convicted of the crime. So far in Nigeria, all reported cases of rape were perpetrated by males of all ages, with some as old as over 70 years old. Speaking to PUNCH HealthWise, psychiatry researchers say a rapist could be any male, ranging from a very important politician to a rock star or a reverend father. “One thing, however, applies to those who exercise masculine control using sexual violence: they could have a mental health disorder,” researchers say. Thirty-two of the cases of sexual violence, according to Lagos Police authorities, took place in Lagos. Ekiti, too, witnessed a spike recently. The two states have gone as far as opening sex offenders’ registers to serve as deterrence for the crime. However, the actual numbers of all the cases could be much higher if all the rape cases — in what has now become a pandemic — are reported, a senior Lecturer at the Department of Psychiatry, College of Medicine, University of Lagos and consultant clinical psychologist at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, Dr. Charles Umeh, said. Rape, a medical issue According to medical and psychology experts, several mental health issues underline rape —for the rapists first, and, then, their victims. For example: Ahmadu Yaro, 27, allegedly defiled a three-month-old baby in Adogi village, Lafia Local Government Area of Kano recently. A counselling psychologist at the University of Lagos, Akoka, Prof. Ngozi Osarenren, considers this a “serious mental health problem.” “That man should not even see a psychologist but a psychiatrist and when you check such men, they are some of the men that are into occultism; it’s very likely to be for ritual,” Osarenren said. “I don’t know what can be attractive about a three-month-old baby,” Osarenren, who is also the chairperson of university-wide counselling for staff and students, said. Some psychiatrists also link such rapacious lust to psychosis. Osarenren and other Nigerian experts are not necessarily propounding something new by saying rapists, including paedophiles, could have mental disorder. Scientists in the West have, over the years, believed the impulses of sex and violence originate from the same point in a human brain. And any congenital or acquired debility of that area makes it difficult for some rapists to distinguish — or learn the difference —between the two impulses, an article in the Indian Journal of Psychiatry explained. Other likely conditions predisposing a man to rape include paraphilia [a condition characterized by abnormal sexual desires, typically involving extreme or dangerous activities], attachment problem, mania, and cognitive distortions. All these manifest in different behaviours. Men with insatiable sexual urges are called satyriasis, while women who can’t get enough are nymphomaniac. “People with these conditions cannot be satisfied sexually but it does not predispose them to rape,” Umeh told PUNCH HealthWise. A similar problem — learning difficulty — applies to some people who look at rape and violence as the same thing. “These men see rape as a way for showing dominance over women, to control them or show that they are the man; but this usually happens to people who are not man enough to compete in the society with other men. “So, they look at it as a way of overpowering women and establishing their sense of manhood or dominance as the case might be,” Umeh, a psychologist, noted. In spite of this list of psychological reasons as to why a man turns a rapist, researchers agreed that it’s near impossible to profile rapists on their mental state alone. Other factors would definitely play a role. “In some cases, it could be as a result of drug abuse, overuse of drugs like alcohol, marijuana or other psychoactive substance,” a Clinical Psychologist at the Department of Psychiatry, LUTH, Dr. Juliet Ottoh, said. “Some persons might be sick for a while, such as people with psychosis, schizophrenia and psychosis; while some persons could be hearing voices asking them to do such. “Also, mania is a mental health issue, whereby some persons are just hyperactive and in this process, they do all sorts of risky things without them being aware of what they are doing,” Ottoh explained. Umeh added that, “A lot is about frustration, inability to woo a woman, ritualistic purpose and the lockdown brought about a lot of frustration and that sex reassures them that they are man enough.” Rapists live in denial But whatever reasons—mental or social—psychologists and social workers say the perception of the rapists matters, noting that rapists live in of denial of their actions. In a survey of 100 convicted rapists, Madhumita Pandey, a researcher from the Anglia Ruskin University, UK, studying rape in the wake of the 2013 gang-rape in India that rang throughout the world, found out how rapists think. “In my experience, a lot of these men don’t realise that what they’ve done is rape. They don’t understand what consent is,” Pandey said in an article in the Washington Post later in 2017. “There were only three or four who said we are repenting. Others had found a way to put their actions into some justification, neutralise, or blame action onto the victim,” the researcher said. Such rationalisation by rapists is not peculiar to India. It cuts across the male-dominated culture everywhere, including Africa and, indeed, Nigeria. “Just like most mental issues, insight is one reason rapists, paedophiles, and other sex offenders still feel not so alarmed with the crimes they try to rationalise it. “That means they don’t look at the situation in the same dimension others see it, and they see themselves as doing the right thing,” said Umeh. Rape and paedophilia It is the reason, Osarenren said, a 40-year-old who raped a two-month-old girl could justify such. “Because what can be attractive about a baby?” For Ottoh, some paedophiles could be having mental imbalance for a while. “Sometimes, when this happens, we shield it but it is meant to be addressed immediately. It is good for parents to be very protective of their children and it’s not just the female as I have had cases of male children being abused too,” she said. Some of the perpetrators also justify having carnal knowledge of a minor, especially when it requires no violence. Same for sex with relatives. But experts say there is no justification for it. “If a father decides to have sexual act with his daughter, that is incestuous and it could be rape, especially when the daughter does not want that,” said Umeh. Curbing rape The experts, however, stressed the need for appropriate sex education, as well as the need to stop victim-shaming. “We can curb it if we begin to talk about it and seek help early, but some people don’t want to talk about it because of the stigmatisation; but the more we shield some of these things, the more we are encouraging it and indulging a lot of people,” Ottoh said. There is also the need to look at the nation’s value system, and to go back to sex education as early as early as possible; “So that a child of three years will begin to understand sex issues that is appropriate for their age. “When they understand it, they grow up with it, knowing that some things are unacceptable,” Umeh advised. https://healthwise.punchng.com/as-rape-becomes-epidemic-nationally-mental-health-experts-examine-why-men-rape/ |

berem:Seun said that he wasn't aware and will look into it. Thank goodness he atleast saw the folly in his biased mods. The real blame still lies on Seun, who shows desperation in appointing well known bigots as mods......really confusing. it gives room to infer that Seun has ulterior motives. If not, why so particular about certain people who have been discredited? The end result will be a degradation of this site, a platform with a lot of promise. It's a pity! |
October29, 2014 – The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola has called on Nigerians not to accept any excuses for power failure in the past four years. Fashola who was speaking at an occasion to handover 8.8 Megawatts Mainland Independent Power Plants (IPP) in Ikeja, Lagos said four years is enough for the Federal Government to have delivered electricity to Nigerians. The governor who said that delivering power is not rocket science noted that Nigeria remains the only country in the world that has gas and petroleum but lacked electricity. He noted that many countries in Europe depend on gas from Russia adding that even if Russia decides to cut off gas, they never experience power failure adding that his government has been able to deliver what it has promised. The governor said that if the National Assembly provides the appropriate legislation that would enable states to generate and distributes electricity to Nigerians it will deliver adding that what will be required then is for Nigerians to be prepared to consume electricity according to their pockets. The governors also faulted recent privatization of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria(PHCN) noting that the process has not delivered light to the expectations of Nigerians because those who are competent were not accommodated in the privatisation process. Speaking on criticisms that has greeted ‘ Muslim Muslim’ ticket being touted by some political parties, Fashola said that it does not matter if those who will deliver Nigerian from its current state are Muslims or Christians, adding that Muslim Muslim ticket or Christian Christian ticket will not give Nigerians energy and good roads but good people. He challenged Nigerians that as the 2015 general elections draws close, they should see good roads, energy and the likes in the voter’s card adding that they must use it to put the right person into office. He noted that whatever choice that is made, Nigerians will have to live with it in the next four years. Earlier in his speech, Commissioner for Energy, Engineer Taofic Tijani said the power plant is made possible through a public private partnership between the Lagos State Government and a consortium of Mainland Power Limited, CET Power and Solad Electric Limited. “The 8.8 Mw Mainland Power Plant will henceforth guarantee unlimited power supply to the old secretariat complex , Lagos High Court, LASUTH, water works, energy academy and public lighting”, he said. http://starconnectmedia.com/2014/10/29/dont-accept-excuses-for-power-failure-fashola-tells-nigerians/ |

RebelLeader15:You support PDP right....why would PDP support disdainful characters like Buruji, Omisore, Adedibu, Fayose et al to lead the Yorubas if they actually mean well for us. What has Yorubas benefited from this government. Also, the level of corruption and wanton looting of treasury is astonishing( stealing is not corruption). That is why I see you as the typical omo ale Yoruba, for insisting on a government that wants renowned touts to lead the Yorubas so they can keep us down. I've got news for you.......it will never work. I personally think an alignment with the north will benefit the Yorubas the most. People like you will be subdued and thrown away |
RebelLeader15:Mr man shut it......you are the typical Omo ale Yoruba |

ChimaAdeoye: Even Boko Haram flag is more ingeniousnever planned to comment in a thread started by an ignoramus and filled with iddiots, but I had to use this opportunity to finally ask why a hate filled Yoruba loathing flatty like ChimaAdeoye still keeps a Yoruba surname......y for heaven sake will a hater proudly keeps a name it hates, if not self delusion and a critically confused mind. We don't bloody care about your prejudiced feelings, but do bloody keep our name out of your skewed identity.. Let a dog be a dog, and a lion be a lion....never a cross btw. Bikonu |
thwarrior72: Of course it has, quit living in denialU still don't get it, do you?.....our mentality is different from urs, u will never be able to divide Yorubas with religion. Yorubas can kill each other over territory, land and politics, but not on religion ( hope you finally realise this).moreover, touts and thugs abound in every region. I served in Anambra, and I've never felt so insecure like I did in Onitsha, with ibo thugs snatching things in full glare and in the open. The north has its multitude of street urchins, ever ready to pounce in any upheaval. The only thing that can bring out the beast in the southwest is politics and territory, and I hope igbos stay out of it in thier own interest |
