MPSA: No one will compare Johannesburg alone, with any city in the continent , I am not talking about Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth, and others, SA is the best country in the continent, Eish! But our economy isn't performing very well at this moment Lagos will soon catch up with Joburg. You cannot compare Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth and other cities with Abuja and Lagos. You can only compare Cape Town, Pretoria and Durban with Abuja and Lagos. |

AfroCircus: Let's not let patriotism cloud our judgment, honestly speaking, there's no way Port Harcourt can be compared to Nairobi development wise. As for Abuja it can though it pales when compared to Nairobi and as I said, it's the only city that won't disappoint you given its population. Now getting to Lagos, it's a city competing with Nairobi instead of Shanghai, Cairo or some other similar sized city. Its skyline, motorways system, retail penetration, corporate presence etc should be several times larger than Nairobi's and not the same size.
Then Ibadan, Kaduna, Kano and Lagos are above 2m ppl with Port Harcourt being very close to that figure. Lagos is too big to compare here so for the other 3,do you see anything Durban like or Abidjan like? So I don't think I was wrong saying your 2m - 3m cities are very disappointing.
It's good admitting realistic things. For instance, Pretoria is about the same size as Mombasa but Pretoria is a whole lot more developed, or Port Louis in Mauritius is half the size of Nakuru but it looks like the bigger city when compared infrastructure wise. The Port Harcourt - Nairobi match-up is just as contrasting Ok, let us agree Port Harcourt can't be compared with Nairobi but Abuja and Lagos are better than Nairobi in terms of infrastructures and development. Do you agree with that? How many cities in China can compete with Japan and South Korea's cities with their 1 billion population? How many can compete with Canada with their 1 billion population? Lagos has surpassed Nairobi and it will soon surpass Johannesburg with the way it's developing rapidly. Recently, Lagos has started building Skyscrapers and has even dedicated Eko Atlantic for such project. It will add to the numbers 100 of highrise already in the city. In terms of transportation, Lagos has introduced BRT with a dedicated lane and in next few months will face out the popular bus called Danfo. Lagos has started building mono rails across the city which is expected to start functioning at the end of next month. The water transport is another area Lagos is developing. Cable cars are already under construction. The visible cooperate present in Lagos is the reason we call Financial Headquarters of West Africa. All I have listed are more than Nairobi has presently. Kaduna population is not up to 1.3 million. There it is clear Nigeria has only three cities above 2 million in population. We are comparing Ibadan, Kano, Enugu and Calabar with Mombasa, so I don't think it is disappointing because these cities are also developed. If you know the history of Ibadan then you will understand that it was competing with many big cities in Africa but it suffered due to political situations in Nigeria. Nevertheless, I agree we need to improve which I think some cities have started to do. First picture is the new bus to replace Danfo Second picture is the BRT buses currently used in Lagos Third picture is the cable car to be used in Lagos. You can see the Lagos State officials inspecting it in one foreign country. 4th picture is the map of BRT routes

Nairobi can only compete with Joburg and Cario. Not Lagos. Leave alone the slum city of Ibandan. In skyscrappers, infrastructure, buildings and general livability. I presented you with facts. And who told you Lagos stopped building Skyscrapers? Have you ever heard of Eko Atlantic city? What about smart city? You can see the list of skyscrapers built in 2016.

It may had the first but by 80's Kenya already had adozen..Not 12 floor buildings but plus The first skyscraper in Ibadan was built in 1965 with the height of 105 meters while the first and second skyscrapers in Nairob were built in 1973 and 1974 with the height of 105 meters and 103 meters respectively. Nairobi waited until 2000 before it add another skyscraper Times Tower, with the height of 140 meters. Nairobi only had two as at 2000 while Ibadan had only one. Just one more than Ibadan. I waa there, right but Nairobi never had a dozen as at 80s and even now. |

Kenya's first real building bubble was experienced in the 1970's. Iconic Buildings like KICC and Hilton Hotel were already up by early 70's.
By 90's almost all the buillds below were up kissing the sky.. So what skyscrapers did Ibadan have by then!!!
From 2002 Nairobi building bubble has been outside cbd mainly upperhill, westlands,Hurlingum,Mombasa road among others. No, I am not, I am obviously stating the facts. I know Kenya is good but I also know that the development of skyscraper in sub Sahara Africa was initiated in Ibadan and with many first initiated in Ibadan. Then Lagos as the capital was doing catch up with Ibadan. As you rightly said, skyscrapers in 2000. I mean building with 100 meters height while Ibadan already had the first in sub Sahara Africa. |

Jay254: Top five Major cities in Nigeria can beat Nairobi when it comes to population. But when it comes to infrastructure, beauty and ambience Nairobi has no equal in Nija.. In the most leavable Cities in Africa Nairobi has been equated to major S.A cities in a kinder way.. http://www.africa.com/blog/the_top_10_most_liveable_cities_in_africa/
Too sad there wasn't even one Nija City on the list.
Mombasa BTW receives more tourist than the whole of Nigeria combined.. Calabar and Enugu cannot even reach a quarter the status of Mombasa.
Its a pity to even put Portharcourt in the same league with Nairobi when Lagos alone cannot fit in.
One thing I respect Nigeria for is how a city with 21m ppl can exist with such a limited infrastructure... Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt(to some extent) are equal if not better than Nairobi. Liability is first determined by security and you know challenges we are facing. You don't know the population of Nigerian cities else you would not have said that. Ibadan, Enugu, Calabar and Kano are on the same Level with Mombasa if not better. |

AfroCircus: You talking population wise or development wise, coz if it's the former, I do agree. But development wise, I harbor very strong doubts. Not that Port Harcourt, Enugu or Kano aren't developed, it's just that they ain't as much as the cities you've compared them with.
Thing is when you hear of a 2-3m populated city in Nigeria, you expect to see a Durban like or Nairobi like city in terms of roads, skyline, urban planning, sophistication level etc. But save for Abuja, others are very fond of falling worryingly short of your expectations. I am talking about both. Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt(to some extent) can be compared with Nairobi in terms of infrastructures and development. These cities are developed and financial buoyant enough. They are one of foreigners choice destinations for investments. Calabar was formerly the capital of Nigeria, Ibadan was the capital of Western region. At it height, it was the same with Nairobi in terms of infrastructures and development, Enugu was the capital of Eastern region and Kano is the financial Headquarters of the Northern region Nigeria has only 3 cities population exceeding 2 million, Lagos, Kano and Ibadan. Kano - 3 million, Ibadan 2.5 million, Lagos 9 m, Port Harcourt - 1.5m, Calabar 600,000 thousand, Enugu - 670,000 thousand, Abuja - 1.2m etc As you can see, you are wrong. |

ThunderingHooves: Okay. Wakanow seems an interesting start point should i ever visit Nigeria. What i really wanted to know as far as tourism is concerned is whether there is a concerted effort by govt/private sector actors to jointly promote your country. Having individual states do their thing is good but its not coordinated. I hope you get my meaning.
Ps. On another thread completely different from this one i asked :do Nigerians consume tea? If so where do they get their tea from? I need someone who can give me a brief overview of the hot beverage market in Nigeria or send me a link to that effect. Thanks in advance. The system of government makes it the duty of states to generate revenues themselves through resources available to them. They are trying to take most of it back from the government because the government only focused on oil and allowed to places to rot. Presently, Nigeria is trying to diversify their economy and hopefully they will help to promote our country. Obasanjo government promoted Nigerian tourism industry but after he left, the ones neglected it for oil. I don't know about tea plantation in Nigeria but you can open a thread for that. |

All developed countries are full of multinationals, look at Dubai,China, Singapore they all attracted foreign investors to experience economic bubble they had.. Just a reminder Kenya is the biggest investor in Africa by number of ventures and second to S.A by capital, check where nija is and come back...you keep talking about skyscrapers hahaha funny how you forget tallest structures are under construction in Kenya infact by 2020 the tallest building in Nija will be number 10 in Kenya and BTW who would love to leave in a skyscraper when you can leave in a beautiful mansion near the park, around the forest or near a river atypical example of London and Dubai...
Before I forget Asian countries destroyed their mono rail, they weren't beneficial to them. I know the value of direct foreign investment and I also know the importance of building mega companies controlled and owned by Nigerians. Both compliments each other. You made look as If Nairobi has more multinational companies than Lagos but I am letting you know you are wrong. We have thousands of Multinational companies headquarters in Lagos both locally and internationally. How is Kenya the biggest investors in Africa by ventures? Explain yourself. What is going to be the height of the tallest building in Nairobi by 2020? Is it going to be more than the one Abuja is building? 308 meters. The skyscrapers are built on a reclaimed sea and beside the sea and a lake. Tell me who would not love to live there? What are the names of those Asian countries? The simple truth is Lagos has but Nairobi don't have. |
