Thousands of Akwa Ibom residents thronged the streets of Uyo, the state capital, and other towns Tuesday, singing songs and waving brooms – the symbol of the All Progressives Party – to celebrate the emergence of Muhammadu Buhari as Nigeria’s president-elect. Mr. Buhari, the candidate of the APC, defeated incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan at the polls, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, said. Akwa Ibom State, for years a Peoples Democratic Party-controlled state, has lately broadened its opposition ranks, with extensive support for the APC, largely in protest of the leadership style of the governor, Godswill Akpabio, a key ally of President Jonathan. Mr. Akpabio was accused by the state APC of masterminding massive rigging during Saturday’s presidential vote, returning over 800,000 votes for Mr. Jonathan. Many believe majority of the votes were fictitious as evidenced by a video published by PREMIUM TIMES on Monday, showing election officials colluding with agents of the PDP to thumbprint ballot papers in an area the state PDP governorship candidate comes from. One resident said if a credible vote was conducted in the state on Saturday, the result would have been significantly different in favour of the APC. During the election, deadly clashes erupted in many communities where residents dared to confront state agents who insisted that voters support only the PDP. At least one person was killed in Mbierebe Akpawat, a village in Ibesikpo Asutan, the APC governorship candidate in the state, Umana Umana, said. Afraid of such attacks, many supporters of the APC have cowered in the state in the past, doing little to be identified. Notwithstanding, several Akwa Ibom people reject the impression that majority of the state’s population supports the PDP and Mr. Jonathan. “Many people here are tired of Akpabio and Jonathan. People are tired,” said Ntiedo Ben, a resident of Uyo, the state capital. “You think people here don’t want change?” On Tuesday, as it became clear Mr. Buhari was coasting to victory, even before the final announcement by Attahiru Jega, the chairman of INEC, youth and the elderly, brandishing brooms and shouting APC, spilled into the streets of many towns in Akwa Ibom, to celebrate. “The level of celebration for Buhari here in Akwa Ibom, makes it clear that people felt shackled by Akpabio and now they believe freedom has come,” another resident said. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/180411-akwa-ibom-erupts-in-celebration-over-buhari-win.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

By Soni Daniel and Victoria Ojeme Abuja – As the results of the elections held in Nigeria last Saturday begin to roll in, the European Union has said that there was no evidence of systematic manipulation of the electoral process by the stakeholders. The European Union Election Observation Mission in Nigeria made the submission in its preliminary findings released in Abuja today. The EUEOMIN Chief, Santiago Fisas, told journalists that although the highly competitive election tested the Nigerian electoral arrangements, systematic weaknesses left the process open to abuse by electoral contenders. The mission also noted that there was misuse of incumbency by parties at the federal and state levels occasioned by escalating incidents of violence and intimidation. The mission gave the Independent National Electoral Commission at pat on the back, saying that it ‘’appears to have performed impartially in difficult circumstances while stakeholders at a local level report confidence in its work’’. Details later. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/03/breaking-news-no-evidence-of-manipulation-in-nigerias-election-eu/ |

By Levinus Nwabughiogu and Isiaku Oyibo Daura: Presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, General Mohammadu Buhari on Saturday said it would be unfair for anyone to contemplate the cancellation of the presidential polls following a few recorded hiccups. Main opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Mohammadu Buhari casts his ballot at a polling station in the “Gidan Niyam Sakin Yara A ward” at Daura in Katsina State on March 28, 2015. Voting began in Nigeria’s general election but delays were reported countrywide because of technical problems in accrediting electors. AFP PHOTO He said that the challenges were minor to have affected the entire country. Citing instances, the former Head of State said that what had happened in 5 States could not have presumably affected the remaining 31 State and the Federal Capital territory, Abuja. He addressed a press conference in his private residence after he and his wife, Aisha had cast their ballots at Kofar Baru 3 in Sarkin Yara “A” in Daura Local Government Area of Katsina State. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/03/i-will-not-accept-polls-cancellation-buhari/ |

The Kaduna state Police Command on Friday summoned the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the state, Nasir El-Rufai, and two other bigwigs of the party to report for questioning in their offices. Summoned to appear along with Mr. El-Rufai are Suleiman Hunkuyi and Lawal Yakawada. Mr. Hunkuyi is the APC senatorial candidate for Kaduna North and chairman of the APC Kaduna state campaign council while Mr. Yakawada, who was secretary to the state government in the Patrick Yakowa government, is a senior member of the APC campaign council. All three were invited by the deputy commissioner of police in charge of the CID. Samuel Aruwan, the spokesman for the APC campaign council said, the police have followed up the written invitation with telephone calls. The intent behind requesting the three top leaders of the opposition to report on the eve of the election is to hold them down until the election ends, Mr. Aruwan said. It is not clear why the Police want to question the three men but party insiders suggested the invitation has to do with a petition about destruction of billboards in Zaria. The APC claims it has been a victim of widespread vandalisation of its assets, saying the action of the police “is part of a campaign to slap criminal charges on the opposition for actions for which it has already been victimized”. In response to the invitation, Yusuf Dankofa, an associate professor of law and counsel to the APC, has written to the police, notifying them that there is an ongoing court action at the Federal High Court in Kaduna regarding the events in Zaria. In a letter to the commissioner of police, Mr. Dankofa said the pendency of the case prevents the police from taking any action in connection with the matter, as “that would not only amount to an act of sub judice, but would also translate to a total disregard for justice and a further desecration of the hallowed majesty of our courts.” “In view of this fact that the above mentioned people’s application is before the court, the matter has been further adjourned to the 29th of April 2015 for further arguments and with this the court has been seized of this matter,” Mr. Dankofa said. The police is yet to respond to Mr. Dankofa’s letter. Meanwhile, the APC says it has been alerted to a plot to arrest some of its chieftains in Southern Kaduna. They include party chairman and gubernatorial running-mate, Barnabas Yusuf Bala (Bantex), Mikaiah Tokwak, Ishaya Iko, a retired vice-admiral and Ben Kure, Director General of Kaduna APC Campaign Council. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/179250-breaking-police-summon-el-rufai-other-apc-bigwigs-hours-to-elections-2.html |
