President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday said Boko Haram planned to extend its attack to other parts of the country after it attacked Abuja in 2014. Mr. Jonathan said it was the intention of the insurgents to bring down the nation. He stated this when he attended the revival service of the Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Revival Movement at its headquarters in Ijesha, Lagos. “The idea of the group was to start from the centre of the country and then move to bring the whole country down,” Mr. Jonathan said. He listed the United Nation’s building, Police Headquarters, Army barracks market and Nyanya Motor Park as some of the places the terrorist organisation attacked in the federal capital. He said that the efforts of the Federal Government had curtailed the spread of the attacks to other parts of the country, except in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states. The president said that insurgency and terrorism were global phenomena that were not peculiar to Nigeria, but added that with international collaboration, the Armed Forces would defeat the extremists. “We are working hard as a government and with your cooperation, we will rout terrorism. We will work harder to protect all Nigerians. “We will improve the economy so that people will have jobs so that these distractions about terror will end,” he said. He thanked members of the church and the Christian community in the country for their intercessory prayers and urged them not to relent. “We believe we should not campaign in churches but I am here to thank the General Overseer and members of the church for what you are doing. “Your spiritual work has not only helped members of the church but helped the country,” Mr. Jonathan said. The General Overseer of the church, Lazarus Muoka, led the congregation through intercessory prayers for God “to bless the nation with unity, peace and stability’’. The faithful also prayed to God to give the president good health and strength to continue to prosper the nation. They also prayed for pre-election and post-election peace in the country and for the lord to protect and preserve the president to enable him achieve national prosperity. The Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Wednesday took the former Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Chukwuma Soludo, to the cleaners over his criticism of President Goodluck Jonathan’s management of the country’s economy, saying his comments amounted to committing “intellectual hara-kiri”. The Minister, who spoke through her Special Adviser on Media, Paul Nwabuikwu, accused Mr. Soludo of single- handedly mismanaging the country’s banking sector between May 2004 and May 2009 and plunging the country into “an incredible accumulation of liabilities that will cost tax payers about N5.67 trillion”. Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala, apparently livid, described the former CBN governor as “an embittered loser in the Nigerian political space” who is “so derailed” to “commit intellectual harakiri by deliberately misquoting economic facts and maliciously turning statistics on their head to justify a hatchet job”. “Soludo has shamelessly pandered to so many past leaders that Nigerians are asking one more time – what position is Soludo gunning for now?” she asked. “There is definitely an issue of character with Prof. Charles Soludo and his desperate search for power and relevance in Nigeria. Nigerians should therefore beware of so-called intellectuals without character and wisdom because this combination is fatal,” she added. Meanwhile, read full statement by the minister below. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/175796-okonjo-iweala-bombs-soludo-says-hes-nigerias-worst-cbn-governor-ever.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, PDP, has distanced itself from a newspaper advert sponsored by Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State, suggesting the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, will die in office if voted president. In the advert published by Punch, Mr. Fayose compared Mr. Buhari to past heads of state and president who died in office. He urged Nigerians to choose President Goodluck Jonathan as life against Mr. Buhari, whom he said represents death. The publication sparked outrage Monday, will calls on Mr. Jonathan and the PDP to denounce the governor’s action. On Tuesday, the media director for Mr. Jonathan’s campaign team, Femi Fani- Kayode, told journalists in Abuja that the governor’s position did not represent the opinion of Mr. Jonathan or the campaign organisation. “Governor Ayo Fayose is a distinguished leader of our party. A democratically- elected governor and someone we have immense respect and affection for and he released this advert in his own name. That represents his own personal opinion which he is entitled to. “What I can tell you on our part as the Presidential campaign organisation is that it does not represents the opinion of the Presidential Campaign Organisation or indeed the President, it is his opinion, which he is entitled to and he is somebody that we have immense respect for, he is a leading member of the party, I have spoken with him and we respect him. “But for anybody to suggest that this is the position of the presidential campaign organisation or President Goodluck Jonathan, that will be most unfair,” Mr. Fani-Kayode said. He added: “If we wanted to say something like that we will say it without any kind of apology but of course, we will never say that because we believe in the sanctity of life. Age is not a function of how long you will live. “It is important that we recognise the fact that age is not an indication of how long somebody will live. We believe strongly that we must continue to show immense respect to the person of General Buhari,” he said. Mr. Fani-Kayode said the party will however continue to raise questions on the issue of Mr. Buhari’s health, insisting, “We believe it is important to always raise question about facts, you know what these questions are and we will continue to raise them.” According to him, “We do not wish him ill, we do not wish him dead, we wish him long life and we believe strongly that such sentiment can be aired by individuals certainly not in our name. “Fayose never said that he was speaking on behalf of President Goodluck Jonathan but for his own self and he said that he issued it in his name. And I have emphasised that, that is his opinion and he is entitled to it. “I could only disown if a statement was purportedly made on our behalf and in fairness to him, he never said that, what is important is to emphasise that fact that his position does not represent our position on this. He is entitled to that position, he is a leading member of our party. We have immense respect for Fayose just as we have immense respect for General Buhari and we will not allow anybody to attribute something to us that we did not say. “So it is his statement and he is entitled to it. It doesn’t represent our position and he never said he represented our position.” http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/175313-pdp-disowns-fayose-buhari-death-advert.html |

Governor Ramalan Yero of Kaduna State has denied reports that he threatened to attack the All Progressives Congress and its governorship candidate in the state, Nasir El Rufai. Audio recordings obtained by PREMIUM TIMES had shown how the governor warned that if ever attacked by APC supporters, he will revenge. He also threatened to bar Mr. El Rufai from entering Kaduna, and warned that he may demolish the former minister’s home. At the flag-off of his campaign on Monday, Mr. Yero asked PDP supporters to physically challenge and confront supporters of rival parties. He plainly encouraged his supporters to be violent, vowing, “Anyone born of a woman who dares us we will use all the powers and force at our disposal to crush him,” he said. Mr. Yero followed up this incitement to violence and anarchy by making wild allegations against El-Rufai and threatened Mr. El-Rufai Mr. Yero said in Hausa: “I can assure you if today I decide you must not come to Kaduna, you will not, if I decide to destroy your house I can, if I decide to put you under house arrest I will. But if you have any doubts try us and you will regret it. If you dare us we will use powers vested in us to decisively deal with you.” But in a statement Sunday, the governor denied making the remarks despite recorded evidence of his speech in Hausa language. Read his statement: “It has come to our notice that some persons seeking to score cheap political points have resorted to ascribing negative meanings to the recent call by Governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero on supporters of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State not to succumb to blackmail and intimidation ahead of the next general elections,” his DG Media, Ahmed Maiyaki, said in a statement Sunday in Kaduna. “Such persons have misconstrued the Governor’s appeal on PDP supporters to brave the storm ahead of the polls to mean a call to violence. To put the records straight and to disabuse the minds of the general public, Governor Yero never and will never call for violence in a State that he has the privilege of being Governor in the last two years. “It is however no longer news that some unscrupulous elements under the negative influence of some desperate politicians have resorted to threatening the liberty of people in the state to free democratic choices. Such people have hired thugs to threaten violence against anyone who dare express support to candidates of the PDP at all levels in some parts of the state. This is unacceptable and inimical to the basic principle of democracy anchored on the freedom of all citizens to support any party of their choice. “While such politicians are encouraging intimidation and coercion in the political space, Governor Yero deemed it necessary to stand by democracy by asking the people to reject such negative antics. The Governor only urged members of the PDP and indeed all peace loving citizens of Kaduna State to defend their democratic rights by resisting any attempt at narrowing their choices in the next elections. People should be free to support candidates of their choice no matter the part of the state that they may reside. “It is also on record that those now complaining of the Governor’s call said nothing when their foot soldiers attacked innocent citizens and destroyed campaign vehicles of opponents obviously under their directives. Such opportunists are obviously afraid that the Governor has exposed their ultimate plot, which is to capture political power through threats, blackmail and intimidation against the wishes of the majority of the people of Kaduna State. “Governor Yero wishes to reiterate his call for peaceful electioneering campaigns by all political parties and candidates. The Governor also calls on the entire citizens of Kaduna State to resist intimidation against their rights to free democratic choice. It is unacceptable and Government will not fold its arms and allow a minority few to intimidate the majority into submission. “The Governor therefore calls on the entire people of Kaduna State to remain calm and law abiding as security agencies have been directed to increase surveillance in order to defend the democratic rights of the people. Only those under the illusion of using threats, intimidation and coercion to garner political support should be afraid of Governor Yero’s position on this matter because their actions is contrary to the Rule of Law.” Meanwhile, Mr. El Rufai has expressed his shock at the governor’s comment. In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Samuel Aruwan, Mr. El-Rufai condemned the call by the governor on his supporters to resort to violence. Below is Mr. El-Rufai’s full statement: It will be difficult to come across a more astonishing articulation of irresponsible understanding of power than this. A supposedly democratically elected governor, is in the 21st Century, talking as if he can freely abuse or abridge the right of any citizen. We wish to remind him that the constitution and the laws of this country do not permit him the recklessness he is arrogating to himself. Two years in office as governor seem to have deluded Yero into a mistaken belief that he has the unchecked powers of an absolute monarch or tyrant. We condemn this incitement to violence and the threat to the liberty and property of Malam El-Rufai. No politician is permitted to allow his desperation to retain office to lead to the outbreak of anarchy or violence in any form.We call on INEC, the security agencies, civil society organizations and the international community to take note of Yero’s incitement to violence. And also recent declaration by hunters to be part of his campaigns contrary to 23rdDecember, 2011 ban of hunting activities in the state. El-Rufai is committed to free, fair and credible elections, conducted peacefully and which results reflect the expressed wishes of the people. We are campaigning vigorously, exposing the non-performance of the government, their wastefulness, their incompetence and their uncaring attitude to the security situation in Southern Kaduna and Birnin Gwari, their insensitivity and denigration of our citizenry. It is a wonder that Yero has never expressed concern at the toll of lives lost in those communities. Rather his passion is stirred only when electoral defeat is starring him in the face. We are engaging the good people of Kaduna state with our programmes that spell out how we will address the issues that matter to the electorates. Yero has failed to abide even by his own call that all candidates should conduct an issue- based campaign. But we remain resolute in focusing on the issues because we are the alternative that the people are rallying to. Once again, El-Rufai commends his supporters for their enthusiasm, passion and peaceful conduct. And we encourage them not to succumb to provocation. We will continue to believe in Almighty God and good people of our dear state and will never derail like those who have assumed place of Almighty God. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/nwest/175255-despite-audio-evidence-yero-denies-threatening-attack-apc-el-rufai.html |

In an unprecedented move, the Nigerian government has announced the reduction of the fuel price of petrol from N97 per litre to N87 per litre. The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison- Madueke, said at an ongoing press conference at the presidential villa, Abuja, that the new price regime would take effect immediately. Mrs. Alison-Madueke said the N10 reduction in fuel price was necessitated by the reduction in crude oil prices in the international market. The new measure is a reversal of government’s policy on the matter. The Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, had insisted on December 17 that Nigeria would not reduce the pump price of fuel despite falling oil prices at the international market, until the revenue crisis occasioned by the dwindling oil rates is over. Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said at the time that the decision to review fuel price either upwards or downwards would only be taken after the current crisis in global oil prices had been settled. But five days ago, on December 13, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari, called on the government to implement immediate price reduction on fuel products to reflect the downscaling in global oil prices. Speaking through his campaign organization, the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Mr. Buhari asked the government to “stop stealing from Nigerians and allow them enjoy the relief that has come to consumers of petroleum products globally”. The APC candidate had said, “The price of diesel which has been deregulated since 2009 still sells at the pump price of N150 and N170 per litre, the same pump price when the international benchmark per barrel of crude was over $100. Now that the international benchmark has dropped to $47.5 (USD) per barrel as at Monday, we ask: where is the deregulation and the relief which it ought to bring to local consumers of diesel? “For the Nigerian consumers, unfortunately the collapse of crude oil price since October 2014 has not translated into any change in diesel, kerosene and PMS prices across the country. “We challenge the federal government to reconcile the information on the website of the Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory Agency, indicating the maximum open market price of diesel per litre in December 2014 as being at N111.6 and the fact that the price has come down to less than $50 (USD) as at Monday. “We want to posit that that the maximum indicative benchmark open consumers of diesel should pay is at a margin below N100 per litre. Therefore, Nigerians are being short-changed by about N50 to N70 on every litre of diesel sold by government. “The implication of this is that with average consumption of about 12 to 15 million litres, Nigerians are currently extorted of amounts between N600 Million to N1 Billion daily due to corruption-induced poor regulatory oversight of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources. No wonder some few industry players are smiling to the banks and buying private jets while small scale industrialists who buy diesel on daily basis for power generation and transportation find it difficult to break-even with their businesses. “Similarly on Kerosene, information available on the website of the PPPRA puts the Open Market Price at N114.71 per litre although the market price is anything above N150 per litre when the global price for a barrel of crude oil was $65 (USD). Now that international price of crude is at $47.5 (USD) per barrel, why are Nigerians still buying kerosene per litre at the same price? Why are Nigerians not benefitting from the global shortfall in the prices of crude by having a cut in the pump prices of petroleum products? “We are aware that there are examples in other African countries where governments have cut the pump prices of petroleum products to reflect the changes in the global oil market. Countries like South Africa, Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya have announced cuts in pump prices of petroleum products, why can’t the Nigerian government do same? “Given the failure of government to do the right thing by announcing a cut in the pump prices of these products, we are compelled to draw the conclusion that the federal government is short-changing Nigerians ostensibly to fund the campaign of the PDP presidential candidate. “The APC Presidential Campaign challenges the federal government to make explanations on why Nigerians cannot benefit pricing reliefs on petroleum products as occasioned by the fall in the global price of crude oil. Anything should of this is a fraud and Nigerians should take note. “As for PMS (petrol) the only product the government agrees as regulated at N97 per litre, the irony is that it does not even cost much as in the United States, a country that was importing oil from Nigeria until recently. “Moreover, even the current budget is still heavy on subsidy with an allocation of N458.68 billion, a scheme that has become a conduit pipe over the years for which the children of ruling party leaders have been beneficiaries.” http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/175196-breaking-nigerian-government-reduces-fuel-price.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |
