Members of the opposition All Progressives Congress in the Senate, on Tuesday, raised alarm of a fresh plot by the Peoples Democratic Party to postpone the forthcoming general elections slated for March 28 and April 11. The senators, who walked out of the plenary to address the National Assembly correspondents in the Senate, alleged that the Presidency in collaboration with the ruling PDP were planning to arm-twist the electoral umpire in the country to canvass fresh postponement using the card reader as an excuse. Their reaction followed the submission of the Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba, while moving a motion for the summoning of the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, over the planned use of the card reader for the election. Ndoma-Egba had argued that the use of card readers would contravene Section 52 of the Electoral Act which prohibits the use of electronic device during election. But the senators, led by their leader, Senator George Akume, insisted at the news conference that anything short of conducting the elections as scheduled, and using the card reader to avoid rigging, might lead to a civil war. They argued that since the card reader was just meant for the accreditation of the voters, its usage would not constitute a breach of the electoral act as postulated by the senate leader. The opposition senators alleged that the PDP leadership having failed to use the security challenges and poor collection of Permanent Voter Cards as excuses to postpone the polls again, had started a fresh plot by hiding under the card reader usage. Akume said, “Elections must be held as rescheduled, it is important that the Independent National Electoral Commission must do this in order to avoid unpleasant consequences. “Nigeria is a huge and complex society, culturally, structurally, and all hands must be on the deck to avoid the Somalia experience. There would be too many warlords in this country should we fail to do what is right. “Nigerians deserve the best. Card readers will add value to the conduct of the elections; we are talking about free and fair elections. Time has passed when people carry ballot boxes and papers to their respective rooms, thumb-print and bring them for counting the following day. “The whole world is watching this country. We have become a laughing stock, we are becoming a banana republic. “We are even more patriotic than those who are in government. We want elections and card readers must be applied, they must be used, otherwise, the elections can never be free and fair. “If a country like Ghana can get it right, using the card reader, why can’t the giant of Africa do it? If Sierra Leone can do it, even Liberia, why can’t Nigeria do it? We are waiting for INEC to do it, INEC must use it. “Card readers are a must to ensure free, credible and acceptable elections. To do otherwise, won’t be acceptable.” The opposition senators further alleged that the APC representatives, former Heads of State and the former Chief Justices who attended the National Council of State meeting where the issue of election postponement was discussed, strongly opposed the idea. Akume said, “From the records, we know that all the former Heads of State supported the holding of the election as scheduled. Former Chief Justices, those who know the law also supported the holding of the elections. “But INEC later said the elections could not hold on the flimsy grounds that the service chiefs said they could not provide security. Security for what? “We have over 774 local government areas in this country and serious security breaches in the North-East are registered in only 14 local governments and therefore, there was no reasonable grounds to shift the elections. “We recall that in 1999, there was no election in Bayelsa during the first round of voting, elections were later held. “Under normal circumstances, we believe the situation is also normal now, these affected areas should have been isolated for the purpose of holding elections at a later date but this was not to be. “We are all learned people, educated people to know that elections have been held in Columbia, which is perpetually at war with itself, elections have been held in Egypt, in Afghanistan, in Iraq, in Syria, in Pakistan, in Mali, Tunisia and other countries. “Nigeria cannot be an exception. The reason was lack of adequate distribution of PVCs, later, it turned to be inability to provide security cover and we wonder that the multi-national force that has been assembled to fight Boko Haram is just 7,000, including the Nigerian troops and we have a troop level of over 100,000 in this country. “Why is it not possible to hold elections with adequate security cover for those who are supposed to do their jobs constitutionally? We believe that there is serious manipulation and a deliberate attempt to undermine and to manipulate the democratic institutions and structures.” http://www.punchng.com/news/pdp-plots-fresh-poll-shift-apc-senators-allege/ |

Native doctors and traditional rulers yesterday stormed the Imo Government House, Owerri to perform what they described as exorcism of evil spirits, saying they came to cleanse the state of the curse placed by widows who protested last Tuesday. The libation-pouring exercise, which began at the main gate of the Government House, was presided over by traditional rulers mainly from the Governor Rochas Okorocha’s community of Ideato South. The monarchs alleged that the Minister of State for Education, Prof Viola Onwuliri, mobilised the widows who were brutalised in the course of their protest march against the governor. Chairman of Ideato Council of Traditional Rulers, Ajaraogu of Ogwume Community, Eze Ethelbert, said he and the entire council of Ndi Eze in the council area had earlier visited the traditional ruler of Amuzi in Ahiazu Mbaise, Eze Innocent Ugochukwu, to warn their daughter, Onwuliri, and her group against contending with the governor. Eze Ajaraogu stated that they came to the Government House to neutralise whatever evil the action of the widows may have attracted, as they jointly poured libation to cleanse the Douglas House. Pouring the libation, they prayed for divine guidance and protection of Okorocha saying, “Our son, Owelle Okorocha, you did not cheat anyone to come to Government House but were duly elected by the entire Imo people, so no one will hurt you. Fear not, your people are with you and you shall return,” he chanted. Also, the deputy chairman, Eze Peter Ewuziem of Umuakam noted that for over 40 years he has been on the throne, “this is the first time anyone would carry a coffin to the domain of either civilian or military leader; any person who planned this evil must receive it back.” However, one of the brutalised widows maintained that she was part of the protest march and no coffin was on display. She said, “Who would carry the coffin, is it the old women? There was no coffin anywhere, but if they insist they saw a coffin, then perhaps their gods may be giving them a sign of doom.” Meanwhile, Mrs Onwuliri has called on the governor to apologise to the widows for encouraging young men to “attack and beat up their mothers.” She said, “Even in the Bible, there is a curse attached to such atrocity and whoever may have participated or engineered the attack on harmless widows, who merely engaged in a peaceful protest, cannot go unpunished.” http://nationalmirroronline.net/new/native-doctors-storm-imo-govt-house-over-alleged-coffin/ |

As criticisms and commendations continue to trail his dramatic exit from the Peoples Democratic Party, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has explained how he arrived at the decision to dump the party to which he belonged for 16 years. The former president had Monday announced his resignation as a member of the party on whose platform he ruled the country between 1999 and 2007. Mr. Obasanjo renounced his membership of the PDP when some leaders of the party led by Surajudeen Oladunjoye, the chairman of the ward around his former residence in Ita Eko, visited him at his Presidential Hilltop mansion in Abeokuta home. The former president directed Mr. Oladunjoye to tear his membership card at a press conference organised during the visit. About two hours later, the PDP leadership in Ogun State announced the expulsion of the former president from the party. However, in a telephone interview with PREMIUM TIMES Tuesday, Mr. Obasanjo explained that the PDP members visited him to express their genuine concern about his refusal to be active in the party. “They were concerned that I had only one leg in the party, and worried that since I’m their leader in the ward, they need to hear from me,” the former President said. According to him, when the party members arrived his residence, they were singing a song in Yoruba language – “Nigeria yi ti gbobgo wa ni, Ko ma gbodo ba je. Eje ka sowopo kajo gbega (Meaning – Nigeria belongs to all of us, we must not allow it to be destroyed and we must join hands to make it great). Mr. Obasanjo said when they settled down he sought to know why they came and that it was at that point that Mr. Oladunjoye told him that since he (Obasanjo) as their leader became angry with the PDP and remained inactive in the party, they had not only lost sense of direction but also worried about their political future. He also said the party members informed him that the leadership in the state was planning to expel him and that they wondered what would happen to them if he was expelled because they would become rudderless. “You are our leader and it is you we are following. You have remained a card-carrying member of the the party. But since you became angry with the party we have lost sense of direction and now we are hearing that they want to expel you. If they expel you, where do we go? What do we do?” Mr. Obasanjo quoted the ward chairman as saying. The former president explained that it was at that point that he gave them his PDP membership card and told them that they could do whatever they want with it. He said, “In my response, I said when you people came you were singing a song and I agreed that Nigeria is our own. If the issue is the party, I will not choose the party at the detriment of Nigeria and I will fight for Nigeria even at the detriment of the party. I will rather surrender my membership of the party so you people can move on politically,” Mr. Obasanjo explained to PREMIUM TIMES. “If you people’s worry is that I’m a card-carrying member of the party and I’m not showing you people direction and you are worried that I’m neither here nor there, this is the card; you can keep it, you can burn it or you can tear it, do whatever you want to do with it.” The former president said he then handed over his membership card to Mr. Oladunjoye, who immediately decided on his own to shred it. Mr. Obasanjo said he had no regrets for his action despite the criticisms that have greeted it. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/177051-why-i-directed-pdp-ward-leader-to-tear-my-membership-card-obasanjo.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

ABUJA — THE Presidency, yesterday, described as insincere and mischievous, the launch by BringBack Our Girls group of a countdown for the Chibok girls to regain freedom, saying fighting terrorism and insurgency is not a football match where commentaries were run for the delight of spectators. In a statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, it said President Goodluck Jonathan in his media chat never promised that the girls would be freed within six weeks, noting that the count-down by the former minister and her group was unnecessary Okupe said: “Our attention has been drawn to a statement credited to former Minister of Education and a leader of the Bring Back our Girls Group, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, to the effect that President Goodluck Jonathan has made an affirmative statement that the girls abducted by Boko Haram terrorists in Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State would be freed within six weeks, hence the beginning of a count-down by the organisation. “We wish to state that the statement by the President during his last media chat was that the combined efforts of new offensive by the Nigerian military and its allies as well as improved capacity in the operations have made the chances for the rescue of the Chibok girls brighter than ever before. “This statement cannot be construed as putting a six-week time-frame for the delicate task of freeing the girls alive which the President remains very committed to and would definitely wish that would even happen in a day. It’s insincere, mischievous “It is, therefore, insincere and mischievous on the part of Dr Ezekwesili and her organization to launch a countdown which from all intent and purpose is meant to score cheap political points rather than encourage the military and help the cause of the girls and their depressed parents. “President Jonathan’s commitment to the rescue and safe return of the Chibok girls is unwavering. The Nigerian military and its allies have as part of their mandate, the rescue of the girls and all others who are in custody of the Boko Haram terrorists as well as securing the safety of Nigerians living in areas ravaged by insurgency. “No responsible organization would seek to make a gain of this unfortunate incident and constantly twist facts and pronouncements in order to appear as if government is incapable of meeting its timelines. “Fighting terrorism and insurgency is not a football match where commentaries are run for the delight of spectators. It is a much more serious exercise and we expect Dr Ezekwesili to understand this in view of her global exposure and stop being a pawn in the chess board of some desperate political actors.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/02/presidency-ezekwesili-fighting-terrorism-insurgency-not-football-match/ |
ABUJA – SENATE President, David Mark, Tuesday said that the country was in a trial moment as it was under tension occasioned by the forthcoming general elections and inflammatory comments by the political class. The Senate President also said that the call for Interim National Government, ING, in some quarters was a futile exercise that was alien to the nation’s Constitution. Speaking while welcoming Senators from recess declared for them to prepare for the botched February 14 elections that had been shifted to March 29, Senator Mark appealed to Senators to rise to the occasion and douse the tension in the polity and also refrain from statements that could aggravate the already charged atmosphere. He said, “Ordinarily, we would have commenced our legislative activities this morning without a welcome address. But, these are not ordinary times in our nation. There is palpable tension in the land and the comments and even the body language of the political class further exacerbates the tension. “As statesmen and women we must rise to the occasion and help reduce tension. We must refrain from acts or statements that will aggravate this already charged atmosphere across the country. This is time for us to be true statesmen and women; both in words and deeds. “I am alarmed that the issue of Interim National Government (ING) has been given undeserved prominence in our national discourse. This is imprecise, sordid and strange. Interim National Government is alien to the 1999 Constitution (as Amended). “Therefore those calling for ING are pushing for an exercise in futility. This Senate is committed to the provisions of our Constitution which we swore to protect and we will not do anything to sabotage the democratic process.” The Senate President called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to continue to prepare to conduct a free, fair, transparent and credible general election, adding, “We owe it a duty to our country men and women to give INEC all the support it needs to conduct a free, fair, transparent and credible election.” He further said that it was important to note that on the 29th of May, 2015 a democratic government elected through a free, fair, transparent and credible election will be sworn-in. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/02/calling-ing-pushing-exercise-futility-mark/ |
A member of a three-man armed robbery gang busted by the Police at Ketu area of Lagos has said he forced his lover to abort a three-month pregnancy because he did not want her to give birth to an armed robber like him. Musliyu Ahmed, 23, who was arrested in Ketu, said: “I had to force her to go for an abortion because I do not want her to give birth to a child, who will have the blood of an armed robber. And because she understands the nature of my job, she had to obey. “I want to get married and start having kids after I quit armed robbery.” The other two members of the gang, Mutiu Rasheed, 22, and Sadiq Dada, 21 were arrested in Ijebu-Ode and Lagos, respectively. Vanguard gathered that Lagos State Police Command received a tip-off that one Ahmed Musliyu, a notorious armed robber, had four locally-made guns, which he kept in his house around railway line at Bolade, Oshodi. Searching for Mutiu After Ahmed was arrested, the detectives discovered that the four guns were no longer with him as he had allegedly handed the guns over to Mutiu Rasheed who lives at Ketu. Before police got to Ketu, Mutiu got wind of Ahmed’s arrest and that detectives were on his trail. So he fled to Kara, along Berger Isheri area where he carried out robbery operations with one Sadiq Dada. It was learned that when the detectives got to Kara, they laid ambush in the neighbourhood for three days. Unfortunately, Mutiu escaped but Dada a member of the gang, was apprehended. During preliminary interrogation, Dada revealed that Mutiu had fled to Ijebu-Ode with other gang members. The police moved from Lagos to Ijebu-Ode, where they laid ambush and arrested Mutiu on the second day of the manhunt. Mutiu reportedly led the officers to Ijebu-Igbo, where they recovered two locally-made guns and six cartridges. Vanguard learned that the gang had successfully carried out different robbery operations in Lagos and Ijebu-ode. Some of the vehicles they stole include a Toyota Highlan-der, Camry and Sienna. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/02/made-lover-abort-pregnancy-wont-father-thief-robbery-suspect/ |
