Zimbabwe got a lot more infrastructure long before Nigeria ever did. Just like in South Africa, the apartheid Rhodesian govt re-invested the proceeds of their export trade back into the country. In the nations which the colonialists took to be 'theirs' (due to high European populations etc) they invested in those economies. In nations like Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Congo etc, with negligible white populations, the colonialists simply exploited and put next to nothing back. So it's no surprise Zimbabwe has relatively good infrastructure compared to Nigeria. They've had a working govt longer than we have. When looking at these things you must always use a historical perspective.

According to reports, about 60 women have been abducted
fromWaga Mangoro and Garta villages in Adamawa State by
Boko Haram militants.
The terrorists, numbering about 100, attacked the
communities on motorcycles and vans on Saturday, October
18, burnt houses and abducted women and young girls, Daily
Trust reports.
A resident of Garta, Tizhe Kwada said:
“The insurgents are still in the area. They slit the throats of
three men in Garta and abducted many young women. We
also heard from residents of Wagga that they killed two men
and took 40 women away.”
Kwada further added that the terrorists went from house to
house to select the women and then forced their relatives to
accept N1,500 and kola nuts as bride price.
The Nigerian government announced a ceasefire deal with
Boko Haram which was also supposed to result in the release
of the abducted Chibok Girls but recent developments and this
subsequent a*******n have cast doubts on that possibility.

Nigeria’s senior national team has dropped five places to
42nd in the latest Fifa world ranking released on
Thursday.
The African champions were adjudged the 38th best
football playing team in the world according to the ranking
released earlier in September.
The Eagles are now the ninth-ranked African side behind
Algeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Tunisia, Ghana, Cameroon, Cape
Verde, Egypt and Senegal following their poor run in the
2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers earlier this month.
Their drop comes after losing 1-0 to Sudan in Khartoum
after playing out a 0-0 draw in South Africa.
Meanwhile Algeria remain at the summit of African football
with 989 points which put them in the 15th position in the
world while Cote d’Ivoire are second in Africa and ranked
25th in the world.
Tunisia stay third on the continent after amassing 780
points which places them in the 31st spot in the world.
Germany, Argentina and Colombia hold the first, second
and third spots in the world respectively as Fifa World Cup
hosts Brazil retained their sixth spot in the world.
The next ranking will be released on November 27, 2014.

After months of trial, South African athlete, Oscar Pistorius,
has been sentenced to five years in jail for killing his
girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
The sentence was for culpable homicide which Pistorius
was found guilty of.
The defence called for a house arrest and community
service, while the state prosecutor asked the court to
impose a minimum of 10 years in prison.
Judge Thokozile Masipa, Tuesday, said any sentence would
need to demonstrate a balance between the crime, the
criminal and the effect on the society.
She acknowledged that while Pistorius had shown remorse,
a very light sentence may send the wrong message to the
society, and encourage people aggrieved in the future to
take the law into their hands.
“Yes the accused is vulnerable but he also has excellent
coping skills. He excelled as a top athlete against big odds
even going on to compete against able-bodied people,” the
judge said.
Pistorius was also found guilty of negligently handling a
firearm that went off in a restaurant in a separate
incident.
The judge imposed a three years of fully suspended
sentence for that offence.
Steenkamp was shot dead by Pistorius at his Pretoria home
on the eve of the 2013 Valentine’s Day. The athlete
maintains the shooting was in error as he mistook
Steenkamp for an intruder.
The deceased was a 29-year-old law school graduate who
turned to modelling before her death.
The state accused Pistorius of lying and pressed for his
conviction for murder.
In her earlier ruling, Judge Masipa said there was no
evidence supporting premeditated murder, but said
Pistorius acted “negligently” when he fired shots through a
toilet door in the “belief that there was an intruder”.
Culpable homicide means there was no intention to kill a
person, but the actions were negligent.
The paralympian was escorted past a crowd of reporters
into the court in South Africa by armed police.

Another United Nations staff member in Sierra Leone has
died from Ebola, according to the UN spokesman, Stephane
Dujarric on Monday.
He is said to be the third UN employee to succumb to the
deadly virus.
The man, who was a driver for the UN Women agency,
passed away at the weekend in Sierra Leone and his
spouse is currently receiving treatment.
“All measures to protect staff at the duty station in Sierra
Leone are being taken as best as possible under the current
circumstances,” said Dujarric.
The world’s worst Ebola outbreak has killed at least 4,500
people in West Africa where the United Nations is leading
an effort to beat back the virus with a massive influx of
aid.

Finally, the speculation that speaker of the House of
Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal would defect to
the All Progressives Congress (APC) has ended as the
speaker has officially defected to the APC in his hometown,
Sokoto.
Daily Times gathered that, his official defection took place
on Monday when he attended the APC stakeholders’
meeting.

Despite claims of a ceasefire between the Nigerian
government and extremist sect, Boko Haram, soldiers on
Sunday night shot dead 25 members of the sect during an
attack on Damboa town of Borno state.
This was disclosed by security officials.
The attack on Damboa crystallised the doubts thousands of
Nigerians expressed over the announced ceasefire deal the
federal government said it signed on Friday with Boko
Haram.
An official of a local vigilante group, Muhammad Gava,
who first confirmed the attack to PREMIUM TIMES in a
phone interview, said the terrorists stormed Damboa at
about 5pm on Sunday.
“My members of the vigilante group in Damboa had
informed me early this morning that the attack was
repelled and more than two dozen of them were killed,
said Mr. Gava.
He added that “the gunmen, according to our Vigilante
members in Damboa, came from the direction of Sambisa
forest and driving several pickup vans and some military-
like armoured personnel carriers”.
An official of the State Security Services confirmed the
incident to PREMIUM TIMES but pleaded not to be quoted
as his superiors at Maiduguri office had prohibited him
and other officers from speaking to the media on matters
like this.
“There was an attack on Damboa yesterday and our
soldiers had effectively repelled them and killed 25 of them
during a shootout.
“The soldiers were able to recover several ammunition
including a Buffalo Armoured Personnel Carrier which the
terrorists abandoned,” he said.
Boko Haram on July 17 hoisted their flags in Damboa after
a deadly gun battle that killed several soldiers and a
Lieutenant Colonel commanding the military base in
Damboa.
Damboa is 85km away from Maiduguri, Borno state
capital. It also shares borders with Sambissa forest where
Boko Haram has its largest training camp.

The Lagos State Government on Sunday said it was
finalising arrangements to deploy some health workers
who helped in the containment of the Ebola Virus Disease
(EVD) in the state to Sierra Leone.
The Governor, Babatunde Fashola, made the announcement
in Ikeja while speaking at a programme to commemorate
the 2,700 days of his administration in office.
The governor said the health workers were to replicate the
state’s containment strategies in Sierra-Leone.
Mr. Fashola said although Nigeria was, as of now, free
from the disease, there was still the risk of new infections
from cross-border movements.
He, therefore, said the state’s planned mission to Sierra
Leone was not only to assist the country to overcome the
great health challenge, but also reduce the risk of the
disease to countries within the sub-region.
Sierra Leone accounts for a substantial number of the over
4,000 global Ebola deaths.
“Lagos is free from Ebola, Nigeria is free from Ebola. But
that does not mean there cannot be another case. For as
long as people are moving from countries to countries, the
risk of infections is still there,” Mr. Fashola said.
“That is why I appeal to the Federal Government to
continue to scrutinise people travelling into Nigeria from
land, sea and air from regions where the problem is still
ravaging.
“That is why some of the things the commissioner for
health will be announcing very soon is the arrangements
we are making to send some of our health workers and
volunteers to go and help out in Sierra Leone.
“That is the only way we, the whole of Africa and the
World can be safe.”
The governor expressed optimism that EVD, just like other
infectious diseases like Cholera that had once ravaged
humanity without remedy, would soon get a cure.
He said Nigerians needed not live in fear of the disease
coming back into the country but urged them to take
precautions that would guard against new infections in the
country.
Mr. Fashola said the state government had taken a number
of initiatives to prevent a return of Ebola in the state.
Some of the strategies, according to him, include the
deployment of screening equipment to schools and hospitals
and the construction of sanitary facilities in schools.
Others are training and retraining of personnel on
infectious diseases diagnosis and the sensitisation of
residents on how to be safe from the problem.
Mr. Fashola also announced that he had appointed Dr
Oluwakemi Sekoni his Scientific Adviser as a move to
enhance better response to Ebola disease and other
infectious ailments.
The governor said the responsibilities of the new adviser
would include providing public information about
infectious diseases for effective response.
Others are actions and co-ordinating science-based
research on food sufficiency, air pollution and helping in
all other things that were likely to improve the general
wellbeing of Lagos residents.
“Today, I am announcing the appointment of Dr.
Oluwakemi Sekoni as my Chief Scientific Adviser. She
would be presented at a formal induction ceremony
shortly,” he said.
Reeling out some of his achievements in the last 100 days,
Mr. Fashola said the Mainland Power Plant which would
supply interrupted power to government facilities in
mainland area was completed within the period.
He said the government also inaugurated a Power Academy
that would train people on all aspects of electricity
generation, distribution and transmission and help improve
the power sector.
Mr. Fashola said the government also trained no fewer
than 3,000 farmers on various aspects of agriculture and
supported them with items to support their businesses.
He said work was speeded up at the 70-gallon Adiyan
Water Works to improve water supply in the state. (NAN)
