It's all change at the top after a big weekend in Spain, while in- form but unfancied sides from Germany and England also make new entries. 1. Real Madrid (+3) Carlo Ancelotti's men were dominant in the Clasico and made a mockery of certain people -- mentioning no names! -- who predicted Barcelona would win ... Madrid still trail their great rivals in La Liga but, if they maintain their current form, that may change very soon. 2. Bayern Munich (-1) Days after shellacking Roma, Bayern came back to earth with a goalless draw at Monchengladbach. It was a blip that will likely mean little for the German giants in terms of the Bundesliga race but does serve as a warning against complacency. 3. Chelsea (-1) For 93:30 vs. Manchester United, Jose Mourinho's game plan worked perfectly. However, a red card and Robin van Persie's quick reaction meant that -- for the second time this season -- Chelsea left Manchester having seen three points turn into just one. 4. Barcelona (-1) Blame the #Shakacurse if you like but, after a great start, Barca lost their way badly at the Bernabeu. Luis Suarez's debut was encouraging, but too many big names had an off day and a first league defeat of the season resulted. 5. Sevilla (no change) At the end of the season, it's likely that La Liga will be won by one of the usual suspects. For now, though, a mere two points separate five clubs at the top and Sevilla, after victory vs. Villarreal, currently trail leaders Barcelona only on goal difference. 6. River Plate (new) The Argentinean leaders are unbeaten in their last 29 games -- a club record in the professional era -- following a 2-1 win at Estudiantes on Wednesday. It's hard to believe that, just three years ago, River were relegated from the Primera Division. 7. Borussia Monchengladbach (new) Last weekend's draw could have been an even better day for the Bundesliga surprise package had it not been for the inspired form of Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. Gladbach remain unbeaten, although Granit Xhaka's ankle injury is a big loss. 8. Atletico Madrid (+1) After Diego Simeone's men won at Getafe, Atleti were somehow overlooked in all but one of the Liga awards categories. Are they bothered, though? Not at all. In fact, they will relish the chance to embrace the disrespect, as they did last season. 9. Olympiacos (new) OK, so they're not top of the Super League just yet, but the 41- time Greek champions -- that's right, 41! -- remain favourites to win their fifth straight league title. Plus, they are doing well in the Champions League, having beaten Atletico Madrid and Juventus so far. 10. Southampton (new) Wow, this is tough for a proud ex-Portsmouth man. It may be through gritted teeth but I have to give credit to Ronald Koeman's side, who won in the league and cup this week, having previously put eight past Sunderland. OK, that one hurt ... Dropping out: Marseille, Manchester City, Benfica, Juventus |

The commercial town of Mubi in Adamawa state and border towns were thrown into a state of panic as several residents of the towns were attacked by rampaging Boko Haram members who also engaged Nigerian troops in a deadly shoot out, residents who fled the area have said. Many of the soldiers and residents fled to neighbouring local government areas. Joshua Chinasa, a resident of Uba town which is about 30 Kilometres away from Mubi, said several people might have been killed during the shooting spree which was still going on at the time of filling this report. “We are in serious trouble these boys have taken our towns. Some Boko Haram members have taken over Mararraban Mubi and Vintim the home town of Chief of Defense Staff, Alex Badeh, and the Nigerian troops are running for their lives. “As I am talking to you now, residents are scampering for their lives for fear of imminent attack and uncertainty,” Mr. Chinasa said. Also corroborating, Lamidi Kery, a female resident and a widow who lost her husband to a similar attack in Mubi, confirmed that people died during the attack. “The town is deserted now, people have all fled into nearby bushes and hilltops. We have seen soldiers in their vehicles retreating,” she said. Another source said that the Boko Haram insurgents overran Madagali down to Bazza both in Adamawa State. “They are having a field day. Even yesterday I sneaked into Michika town to evacuate my aged mother, but surprisingly only insurgents could be heard around, there were no soldiers.” “Mubi, has now become a shadow of its former self, people in hundreds are scampering for their lives. “Even here in Maiha, we saw soldiers vehicles zoom-off towards Yola, the state capital,” said a local source in Maiha, another town in Adamawa. Ahmad Sajor, the spokesperson to former Adamawa State governor, Murtala Nyako, told PREMIUM TIMES his daughter was missing after news broke of the advance of the insurgents early Wednesday. “This morning I got a call from my daughter who is a 200 level student of Adamawa State University, Mubi. She was hysterical. I was in Abuja for a meeting, but her information forced me to head back to Yola immediately,” Mr. Sajoh said. “According to her, the insurgents were approaching the town which is the second largest in Adamawa State. I ordered her to leave the hostel and join her cousins to escape the town. I called my father who confirmed the story. “By the time I arrived Yola airport, the town had fallen to the insurgents. My parents are trapped while my daughter and her cousins are missing. We lost contact for the past six hours. “My colleague Mallam Iliyasu of the Bursary Department Adamawa State University, Mubi who is trapped in the town said by 2pm the Police Barracks in the GRA was overrun by the insurgents, the Prison was blown open while fighting was going on at the army Barracks. “The IDP camp at Lamorde was thrown into confusion. The new rulers of the town had issued a decree banning all entry and exit to the town. Students who trooped to the motor park are now stranded with most taking refuge in any House that could welcome them. “The barracks are the least safe locations in the town. So far there are no reported cases of killings or abductions. But fear and apprehension had taken over. No word yet on the incident either by Government or the Military.” The state governor, Bala Ngillari, has asked the people of the state, particularly those in the affected areas to remain calm saying security agents are on the top of the situation. “People should remain calm, security agents are on the top of situation,” P.P Elisha, the director Press and Public Affairs to the governor said on behalf of the governor. |

Still basking in the euphoria of his defection from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the opposition All Progressives Congress, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, on Wednesday, vowed that his new party will chase out the “cabal” currently running the country in the 2015 presidential election. Apparently referring to the PDP-led federal government, the Speaker said the APC was the only party that could give Nigerians hope and urged its members to unite in order to achieve the task. Mr. Tambuwal spoke at the APC’s extraordinary non- elective national convention held at the Old Parade Ground, Abuja Wednesday. The Speaker, who formally announced his membership of the opposition party on Tuesday after months of speculations that he would dump the ruling PDP, arrived the venue of the convention accompanied by several members of the lower chamber, who according to the master of ceremony, Dino Melaye, were about 100. His arrival was greeted with thunderous cheers from the party delegates from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, who hailed “Tambuwal oyoyo! Tambuwal oyoyo! for about two minutes. Mr. Tambuwal was subsequently invited to the podium by the National Chairman of the APC, John Oyegun, who, in excitement described him as the newest member of the party. Accompanied by some APC lawmakers, including the Minority Leader of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, and the Chairman of the House Committee on Finance, Abdulmumni Jubrin, the Speaker greeted party members after which he was presented with a bunch of broom, amid cheers from the party’s delegates. Apparently excited, Mr. Tambuwal, who had a prepared speech but initially spoke extempore, said the APC would oust the ruling PDP next year. “To the glory of God, come May 29, 2015, we shall sweep away……(you get the message,” Mr. Tambuwal said while raising the broom (APC symbol) and acknowledging cheers from the enthusiastic party members. “APC is the only party that is giving Nigeria hope and we shall deliver Nigeria from the evil that it has been plunged into by a certain cabal.” The Speaker said he was glad to be part of the APC family, adding that he was overwhelmed by the massive outpouring of goodwill and welcome that he had received from members of the party and other well-meaning Nigerians since his formal notification of his membership of the party. He said, “And in appreciation of your warm hand of fellowship, I hereby rededicate myself to the task of building and growing our party, and helping our party achieve its mission of lifting Nigeria to glorious heights and restoring hope to the citizens of our great country. “In this regard, I hereby call on all other like minded Nigerians to join this movement to deliver on the promise of a new Nigeria.” The APC, according to him, is the party where the progressive ideals of good governance to which he subscribe were wholeheartedly embraced and applied for the betterment of Nigeria. He stressed, “I have embraced the APC platform as a veritable instrument for genuine change and enduring national development. We must constantly remind ourselves that Nigerians yearn for true change and APC represents the hope for this change, and a promise of a brightertomorrow.” Mr. Tambuwal noted that the work may appear tedious and the road ahead may appear long and hard, but the party was amply endowed with all the key ingredients of success. According to him, the APC members would need unity and solidarity in their ranks in order to face the challenges ahead. “In the weeks ahead, we will engage party men and women and Nigerians on the future direction of our nation and means of rescuing her from the malaise of youth unemployment, insecurity, institutionalized corruption, poverty, socio-economic decline and infrastructural decay.” |
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has warned that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will create anarchy through its propagation of lies. The APC said: “It is time law enforcement agents called the PDP to order and stop the party from stoking negative passions that could lead to anarchy.” The party’s comments followed the report that the Election Petition Tribunal ordered the recounting of the votes of the August 9 governorship election. In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Kunle Oyatomi, the APC said: “The first sitting of the newly constituted tribunal will take place tomorrow. “Only six local governments have had their election documents inspected, and no strange ballot paper has been found. “The PDP in its petition filed did not ask for a recount of the votes and it could not have ordered a recount. So that piece of information was a deliberate falsehood. No hearing has taken place; the judges have made no pronouncement whatsoever on recount of votes. “The PDP’s claim that its candidate, Iyiola Omisore, has more votes than APC’s Rauf Aregbesola exposes the party’s original plan which failed to materialise. “It shows that the PDP has a pre-recorded result which could not pass through the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC’s) security of the votes. That is the result they now want to force through the Election Petition Tribunal. “The APC appeals to all media organisations following the Osun Election Petition Tribunal to carefully cross-check and confirm the truth or otherwise of any story, statement or information they may receive from the PDP before publishing same. “We appeal to our members not to worry when the PDP speaks because it is a party filled with liars.” |
Ogun State Deputy Governor, Segun Adesegun, has thrown a jab at Governor Ibikunle Amosun through a letter in which he detailed alleged injustices against his person and his office. The letter dated October 24, 2014 confirmed speculations in the Government House that all is not well with two topmost public office holders in the All Progressives Congress state. The state government denied knowledge of the letter. In the 10-paragraph letter obtained by The PUNCH on Tuesday, Adesegun accused Amosun, among other things, of starving his office of funds and allocation of old vehicles to his office. He claimed that the governor had failed to deliver on his promise that he “would enjoy his tenure as the deputy governor while contesting the governorship election in 2011 under the (defunct) Action Congress of Nigeria.” Adesegun added in the letter he addressed to the governor that even his September and October feeding and out-of-pocket and sundry allowances had yet to be paid. The deputy governor said, “My governor, as I am writing to you, the feeding and out-of-pocket allowance of the deputy governor for the months of September and October 2014, as well as the monthly sundry expenses for the months of September and October 2014 are yet to be paid.” Adesegun claimed during this year’s Eid-el-Kabir and Eid al- Fitr festivals, funds were released to government functionaries except him and his aides. He said, “Last year, in my letter to your good self on the affairs of the state, I concluded by reminding you that at a meeting held in February, 2011 at Alhaji Rafiu Ogunleye’s house, while you were the governorship candidate of the ACN, you called me aside and promised me that I will enjoy my tenure as your deputy but since then I have not felt the benefit. “I write to say that rather than improving, the situation is worse.’’ Adesegun also alleged that seven months ago, electricity supply to his official residence was cut off “because the state government owed the then Power Holding Company of Nigeria.” He said he had had to spend an average of N30,000 daily on diesel to provide electricity for his residence. The deputy governor wondered why his lodge was not initially connected to the state mini-power plant even “when it is on record that several government premises, including private residences and organisations enjoy power supply from the plant.’’ He said, “I informed you personally (and severally) during the State Executive Council meetings, requesting necessary action from the appropriate quarters. Up till now, I am still living in darkness. “Of course, your Excellency knows that till date, I remain the deputy governor in Nigeria without a portfolio, in spite of entreaties made to you from various quarters. Worse, several attempts made by me for the office of the deputy governor were rebuffed by your good self. And I keep wondering why this is so.” Adesegun also alleged that while the July 2014 monthly running costs of ministries, departments and agencies in Ogun State were duly paid, that of his office was withheld. He added, “Another very relevant issue is my official car. The engine knocked in December last year. Your Excellency will recollect that you were formerly using the car and that it was when you rejected it that it was transferred to me. So, when it had problems, I thought you will appreciate and understand my plight, rather you ignored me. “I had cause to remind you many times, but nothing was done. I resorted to using my personal car as back-up even when I was aware that you were giving vehicles, including Custom-made bulletproof vehicles to others. It was when a Good Samaritan bought a Tundra Truck for me that you deemed it fit to send a Toyota Prado XL V4 engine to me in late August. “My convoy of old vehicles break down intermittently when travelling. On numerous occasions, we have had cause to stop while on a journey to effect repairs on vehicles . Obviously, these vehicles are to be changed every two years under best practices, even when newly bought. These vehicles in my convoy were used by the last administration and transferred to me. “Your Excellency may also note that the fund you approved for my vacation with some members of my immediate family and two aides in August 2014 is yet to be paid. Please recall that I discussed the vacation with your good self in May, and you graciously conceded that I should forward a memorandum in June, only for it to be approved in August. “Despite your approval, the fund was not released. I made several spirited efforts to no avail. It got to a stage that I was being bounced between you and the Commissioner for Finance. I eventually proceeded on the leave without collecting a dime. “I am therefore constrained to ask if the non-payment of these allowances is as a result of the state government not being able to meet her financial commitments. Or is the state financially bankrupt that it cannot meet its responsibilities. Adesegun asked the governor to fear God and ended his letter with a warning : Amosun’s second term bid may fail. He said, “Your Excellency, while writing this letter, my thoughts race to my university days in Ile-Ife, Osun State where I joined a group of bikers travelling around the country out of youthful exuberance. “During this period, one of my pastimes was reading inscriptions on cars and buses to amuse myself. In 1978, I witnessed a fatal accident near a big tree at Alakia Junction in Ibadan on the way to Ile-Ife involving a white Peugeot 504 station wagon. Nearly everybody in the car died; shockingly there were several amulets hung over the car that had the word “I shall not return” boldly inscribed on both sides. Unfortunately, it did not return. I therefore conclude that we all must fear God.” When contacted, the state Commissioner for Information, Yusuf Olaniyonu, said he was not aware of the letter. “I’m not aware. I don’t know anything about the letter,” he said. |
